Courtesy of NBC News:
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday signed into law a measure to remove the Confederate battle flag from the state Capitol, the culmination of a years-long movement that was reignited by the murders of nine members of a historically black Charleston church.
Before adding her signature to the legislation, Haley spoke of the black victims, who were killed by a white man after they welcomed him into a June 17 prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston.
Their act of love and faith, Haley said, set into motion a chain of events that led to the flag's removal less than a month later.
Man just when you think you have seen everything.
It almost gives me hope that we might soon be able to do something about background checks and pass a ban on military style weapons.
I said "almost" give me hope.
I thought haley just flipped her initial response and caved to keep the flag...am I wrong on that?

All in all, it has been a fantastic summer so far! Amirite or AMIRITE!!!???
ReplyDeleteTwo things:
ReplyDelete1. Republicans keep claiming they are "The party of Lincoln."
Then why are they fighting to keep the Confederate flag? They can't have it both ways. Doesn't make sense. But again, it's Republicans, so there's that.
2. I hate this Confederate flag debate because we should be talking about gun reform and a Federal Gun Policy. Not state by state gun laws which are ineffective, but a federal policy.
We DO have a national gun law! It isn't as effective as it should be, but we do have one.
DeleteThe gun law is not effective AT ALL!
DeleteThat's why criminals from big urban areas, which have tough gun laws or outright bans, can go to a neighbor state or to a private dealer and get a gun to commit a crime. Our big cities have high gun crime rates as a result. A tough NATIONAL policy that closes loopholes is the only solution to this madness.
4:26, I will admit it doesn't do much. I even said that. But if it has stopped ONE nut or criminal from purchasing a handgun OTC, it has worked a little.
DeleteAn attempt was made recently to plug those holes about sellers and buyers and we all know the results of that attempt - and why.
But you are incorrect about a criminal being able to go to another state to buy a weapon OTC. The Brady Law IS federal. And if the state PTB's are doing their job, the OTC purchase won't happen.
Yes, we need to close those existing holes. But more than that, we need good enforcement of our gun laws - INCLUDING new ones.
And there is no ONE single gun law. There are over 2000 federal ones. They aren't doing much because the drive to enforce them hasn't been instilled in our police forces. And a lot of THAT is due to Congress not supplying enough finances or incentives. Kind of like our questionable food supplies.
I have to say, though, I have little faith in a law that closes the loopholes. That isn't going to happen. I have yet to see any law written by a bunch of legislators that DOESN'T have loopholes. Some legal eagle always figures out a way around things.
I see the problem more as that which is in our environmental laws. All the perpetrators get is a slap on the wrist and fines that don't HURT the perps. So they keep doing it.
One thing which MIGHT help is removing the mandatory ten year sentence for possession of even 4 ounces of MJ. TEN YEARS! It's one of the reasons the violent criminals are released when the prisons are over crowded.
I would like to see our prisons relegated to keep the VIOLENT people behind bars, not the ones selling something with the equivalency of beer!
In other words, closing the loopholes is only a start, not a panacea.
Breaking News from Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee
ReplyDeleteYesterday South Carolina’s legislature voted to take down the Confederate Flag.
But hours later, in the dead of night, Republicans in Congress tried to sneak through an effort to let the Confederate Flag fly at national parks.
And today, Speaker Boehner was forced to pull a bill off the floor because his Southern Republicans demanded the Confederate Flag continue to be displayed.
Here’s the bottom line: The Confederate Flag is a symbol of racial hatred. That’s why Walmart, eBay, Amazon and Sears have all banned its sales. We simply can’t believe that some House Republicans are still trying to defend it.
I say believe it. They are a cancer in the body politic.
Sorry, but Walmart, Ebay, et al have stopped sales because of the impact of potential bad PR and its affect on bottom line, not for any other reason.

It is also the flag of traitors waging war on the United States. It has no place on any government property, whether federal, state, or local.

ReplyDeleteNow that the flag has been removed, all the black crime and black on black shootings and murders in Baltimore, Chicago, New Orleans, Detroit, East St Louis, and the rest of the longtime Democrat controlled cities can finally end. A national sigh of relief.
ReplyDeleteYou obviously don't follow Gryphen's blog regularly. Because if you did you would have seen his posts on all the accidental shootings of small children.
DeleteIt's not just big urban centers; there are gun accidents and mass shootings everywhere in this country.
And thanks for bolstering my argument for tougher gun laws. I agree with you that they are needed.
Spoken like a true racist.
DeleteNow that the flag has been removed, will your bigotry end? Apparently not.
DeleteOh..... so there haven't been 156 murders in Baltimore this year so far, 216 in Chicago.
DeleteKeep your heads in the sand liberals.
Hey 3:39, what are you still doin here? I thought I told you to go fuck your mother!?!?!
DeleteOur Lad, Oh I thought you said to go fuck your mother. Well you'll be glad to know she believes in god.
DeleteGOOD RIDDANCE.
ReplyDeleteAs abhorrent as it is, and as much violence and racism as it symbolizes, the Confederate flag rather surprisingly doesn't have a single-minded lobbying group with Federal and state legislatures in its back pocket, the way assault weapons have the NRA. The Confederate flag's support is much less organized. That's the only reason I can think of why such attempts as this one to remove it from state flagpoles might succeed... because the opposition to such a move didn't have the ability to mobilize effectively to stop it.
One small step in the right direction. They showed footage of a believer that the flag stood for "The war of Northern Aggression" with the American Flag upside down (a distress signal). Now they have to find the most respectful way to take it to a museum nearby. I say douse it and set it on fire.

Where is the liberal outrage? Oh that's right he is black, nobody cares.
That's really unusual, most serial killers happen to be caucasians. (That means "Whitefolk" in "liberalese"). Somebody cares when ANY human being is killed by guns in a civil society. Usually they're libruls who want stricter gun laws, and race has nothing to do with it.
