BP reaches settlement for 18.7 billion over Deepwater Horizon spill.

Courtesy of NBC News:

BP and five Gulf states announced a massive settlement Thursday that resolves years of legal fighting over the environmental and economic damage done by the energy giant's oil spill in 2010.

Roughly $18.7 billion in settlement money will be used to resolve the Clean Water Act penalties; resolve natural resources damage claims; settle economic claims; and resolve economic damage claims of local governments, according to an outline filed in federal court. The settlement involves Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

"If approved by the court, this settlement would be the largest settlement with a single entity in American history; it would help repair the damage done to the Gulf economy, fisheries, wetlands and wildlife; and it would bring lasting benefits to the Gulf region for generations to come," U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement.

Yes 18.7 billion is a huge amount, but considering the damage the spill caused, the incredible impact on marine life, and the loss of revenue to the states affected, I still think they got off pretty lucky.

Yeah, very lucky indeed.

Still these five states did a hell of lot better than Alaska did after the Exxon Valdez spill

I just read they found a new "Dead zone" in the GOM.
The loss of marine life and what it has done to the area you cannot put a price on that. Greg Palst wrote a very good book on BP called "Vultures Picnic" how BP goes and ruins places and then spread some $$$$$ and that's that no matter how many died (people like on DWH) People who WILL die from the toxic clean up....
People need to get a clue and get out of their SUV and walk. But most are too lazy.
Their only exercise is to and from their car.
Put solar panels on your house, walk or use public transit as much as you can to reduce your carbon footprint.
Americans are lazy. In most other countries there are no fat asses getting into their big ass SUV's there are people biking to the store and biking to run their errands that way. They use compact cars only for a long drive like a vacay or long travel. Only in 'merica is the Big ass P/U truck revered with the fat fuck driving it with a confederate flag on it or a 'merican flag and "I hate obummer" sticker on there. Only in 'merica.
As far as Exxon Valdez spill, its despicable! They are hoping everyone involved with just die. The oil companies have no conscience and when the spill happens in your back yard see what happens....
Oh and Shell has the ok to drill in the arctic. What could go wrong?
And Granny grifter wants to destroy ANWR to drill baby drill....
When are we going to fucking get a clue?

That's the Court's ruling. But will BP actually pay that amount? ExxonMobil has only payed a fraction of the court ordered settlement from the EVOS due to continued appeals and reductions or refusal to pay court ordered reparations. And the case is still open - 25 years later in the longest running court case in US history. The Re-Opener Clause request, which the State and Federal Gov applied for $91 million in 2006, has been ignored by ExxonMobil, and the statue of limitations runs out June 2016. We've got a real problem people when Court ruled settlements have little to do with the actual reality of what the company actually ends up paying.

DO you really think all those Republican governors are going to use that money to repair anything? LOL They're going to use that money to plug the gaping revenue holes they created with tax cuts for the rich and pretend that they're awesome at governing because look at how they "balanced their budget."

    Mark. My. Words.

Chump change to these environmental rapists! Just the cost of doing business and it won't change their behavior in any way. What is needed are criminal charges, convictions, and jail time for top management.

Boo, hoo, we're supposed to feel sorry for BP, because they did business with Halliburton?

It isn't enough, that is probable their profits from one quarter and how much are they really going to pay.

Americans don't learn, the price of gas goes down a couple of bucks and they all run out to buy an SUV, who needs an SUV in the suburbs?

That's 18 billion dollars to be paid over 20 years. Chump change to a company like BP, The day this broke, World News Tonight played a short clip and interviewed people who lost everything, including their livelihood, and there's still crap on the bottom of the Gulf along with the "dispersants" they used to "sink the evidence". It binds to the globs of crude and it's long term effects are yet unknown. And for years BP has been advertising that they've done all the cleanup and businesses are bouncing back. What value did the worker's lives who got killed have? The countless plant and animal species that have lost their natural habitat? I'm just as upset over this settlement as the Exxon Valdez. and others.

And now, Big Oil swears Fracking on land is "safe"? Take them at their word at your own peril, vote for people who support science and environmental issues, it's our legacy to future generations.
