Obama administration pushing to ban Social Security recipients deemed mentally incapable of handling their funds from owning a gun. Well there goes half of the NRA membership.

Courtesy of the LA Times:

Seeking tighter controls over firearm purchases, the Obama administration is pushing to ban Social Security beneficiaries from owning guns if they lack the mental capacity to manage their own affairs, a move that could affect millions whose monthly disability payments are handled by others.

The push is intended to bring the Social Security Administration in line with laws regulating who gets reported to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, which is used to prevent gun sales to felons, drug addicts, immigrants in the country illegally and others.

A potentially large group within Social Security are people who, in the language of federal gun laws, are unable to manage their own affairs due to "marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease."

Seems fair to me. If you are too mentally impaired to pay your bills on time, or make change for a dollar, you probably should not be trusted with a weapon.

In my opinion there are a whole lot of Americans running around armed to the teeth who really should not even be trusted with a sharpened stick.

For instance.

This of course did not sit well with the NRA:

Told of the plan, head NRA lobbyist Chris Cox issued a statement opposing the "executive fiat" and saying "the NRA stands ready to pursue all available avenues to stop them in their tracks."
Is it wrong that I really enjoy watching these asshats freak out?

We have 4.2 million people on Social Security who cannot handle their affairs? Isn't that quite a few? And yet, the NRA wants them armed.

He could have an entire arsenal and it would be perfectly legal. Sometimes I think the NRA wants a bunch of dead Americans. Accidentally, of course.

  6. The NRA responds to calls for gun control with screeds about the mental health issues, but when those who have mental health issues could rightfully be restricted from owning a firearm, they disagree? Christ on a crutch, those people are idiots.

    1. I distinctly remember some right-leaning woman on a round table on one of the Sunday talk shows a week or two after Sandy Hook trying to deflect the conversation away from gun control and towards mental health issues ....

... without ever giving even one concrete idea (or even ANY idea) about what we could do to keep the guns out of the hands of people whose mental state might suggest that they might use the guns they are able to owe/possess/operate in a way that might pose a threat to other peoples' lives.

And they sure never talked about what it would cost.

I am rabidly in favor of gun control. That being said, this is a bad and unfair idea that will backfire badly making it difficult to get other gun control measures passed. Here's the thing. There are illnesses and injuries that can affect one part of the brain, such as the ability to balance a check book, that have no affect on a person's ability to make rational decisions. The criteria is too narrow to use for revoking someone's gun privileges. I was thrown from a horse a few years ago, and even with a helmet on, I had a severe concussion. The residuals from that left me incapable of doing certain tasks with numbers. In my case it was specific to dates and times. I can do algebra, trig, geometry. My mother had me take over her financial affairs because it had become mentally exhausting. Turned out that she had untreated and undiagnosed atrial fibrillation that left her too exhausted. She doesn't own guns, but if she were someone who knew how to use one correctly, she would have been completely capable of continuing to have one. So, revoking gun privileges needs to be based on broader criteria than is proposed. Also, how will they enforce that anyway? My mother's SS is automatically deposited as I am sure many people have. Also it is very easy for family members to cover for the person. This isn't really an enforceable law.

If someone is so adamant about having a gun when they're not handling their own affairs perhaps submit to a test to see if they're mentally capable of being a responsible gun owner. Of course you're right in that this will never pass. Big oil, big pharma, wallstreet and the NRA own most members of congress.

    2. Anonymous10:45 AM

I agree with the above comment. I, too, am in favor of gun control. However, the way the proposal is worded, those who are categorized with a "representative payee" would not be eligible. I handle my son's funds and as a representative payee his rights would be lost. He is disabled but capable of many things, numbers aren't one of them. So, no, the way the proposal is stated will need to be adjusted and cannot be a blanket restriction.

If you are the sheriff and you KNOW the end times are coming, you'd best be stockpiling everything!

      http://www.news-leader.com/story/news/local/christian-county/2015/07/17/disgraced-sheriff-joey-kyle-preparing-armageddon/30316517/

"Explosives stored hazardously below county courtroom

Since becoming the interim sheriff in May, McNiel said he’s continually found surprising, unnecessary or simply wasteful purchases or acquisitions made by the department. One of his first tasks was sorting through the department’s armory — a closet directly underneath a county courtroom — where C4 was found, he said.

“That’s how I started my first day here — started with the Springfield bomb squad,” McNiel said.

Springfield Fire Marshal Mark Epps said there wasn’t adequate space to safely store explosives. While Epps said it was not a huge safety concern, he noted that the “highly sensitive” blasting caps were stored in proximity to the more inert C4. It’s the blasting caps that are used to detonate the C4.

The explosives are currently being safely stored in Springfield, Epps said."

      Why he's the former sheriff?

"Christian County Sheriff Joey Kyle has agreed to spend a year in jail after pleading guilty Wednesday to embezzling county funds and helping in a fraud scheme.

As part of the plea agreement, Kyle, 53, has resigned as sheriff and will pay more than $50,000 restitution to Christian County before going to federal prison for one year and a day."

Recently, there was a shooting at a local retirement village. A 88 year old father shot and killed his 65 year old son. The son had traveled from out of state to visit and had been concerned about his fathers mental health. The retirement community did not allow firearms but obviously this was a rule that wasn't followed. I can't help but think if mentally incapacitated seniors are told they have to give up their guns, there is going to be a lot more of this type of shooting. Sad that a loving son was shot and killed by his demented son.

Think about it - since 2008 that firm has doubled in size and all the Palin's worth has increased by what? 500%? 1000%. Jesus - Bristol's a 24 year old who has owned 4 houses? A book deal? All of their legal cases seem to just disappear/get dismissed. With the exception of the brawl the media doesn't pay any attention to any of the negative things that are published here. They won't touch the babygate story with a 10 foot pen. After he wrote that letter to McGuinniss his book sales tanked and he couldn't get another interview. Brad Sharlott went underground after Tiemessen wrote one letter to his boss. Shawn Christy and his dad went to federal prison for a long time just for making mean phone calls to the guy. Hell he got the APD to issue a personal press release on the whole Shailey Tripp story effectively shutting it down. For a small town lawyer he seems to have an awful lot of influence. Say what you want about the Palins but their legal team is pretty scary effective. Yeah he's one creative consultant.

I'm in favor of the President's proposal. They not only pose a danger to others, but to themselves as well. If you're incapable of handling your own affairs, then it's proof enough you can't properly handle a gun. I'm not singling out people with mental illness, per se, Many are fully capable of taking their medication, following doctor's orders, paying their bills etc. With the population living longer, we're faced with a lot of people driving when they shouldn't be, owning and using weapons and a plethora of other problems. It's difficult to diagnose dementia and altzheimer's disease and others at different stages, and some of the side effects that slow it down, also slow down reflexes, balance etc. Traits needed by responsible gun owners to properly handle a weapon.
If this proposal saves one life, it's worth it.
Of course the NRA is in a tizzy, they want everyone armed because they get $$$$$$$ from the gun manufacturers.

He's connected with the Chief Justice, judges, senators, Representatives, celebrities and seems to have federal law enforcement and every media outlet on speed dial. You forgot to mention the chiropractor/hit man who Tiemessen also arranged to serve federal time. I'll bet he's part of the reason the Boys Will Be Boys movie is cancelled. People say why don't the Palins sue? They don't have to when Tiemessen can get anyone who crosses him fired, shut down publicly humiliated or arrested. Scary is right.

This kind of utter bullshit makes me want to send support to the NRA. Not joking.
