Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey
Exactly. People like Portman and Cheney basically trod on LGBT rights and only "see the light" when their gay children want to live open lives. Or what about the republican who was going blind and finally got Obamacare which he previously thought was wrong then figured out his red state governor cared less if he shit or went blind. Suddenly he's a bit more liberal. You know 'cause HE almost went blind.
Of course there are the ones like Gov. Abbott in Texas who got millions in a settlement when he was paralyzed as a young man, but screw anyone else who deserves the same as he. And of course there are people like Clarence Thomas and Ben Carson who owe their entire careers to Affirmative Action---but would probable smack any black kid who wanted the same today. And lets not forget the financial wonk (not) Paul Ryan who was an SSI baby after his father died. Hell, he wants to obliterate Social Security and hand elderly people 5000 dollar vouchers that would take the place of Medicare----so basically he wants them dead soon. And didn't Cruz's father give someone a bribe to get into this country out of Cuba? And he thinks Donald the Brain Trust has a point about immigration? And of course there is the Wailer from Wasilla whose family probably gets free medical care via Todd's native heritage. And we know about what a hypocritical dingbat she is on the subject.
Yep, conservatives are great at pulling ladders up behind them. And yeah, they tend to be self serving assholes and seem to have no guilt about any of it.
As we all know, there is no such thing as "compassionate conservatism" despite W's pretense. Conservatives are so lacking in compassion as they've shown us again and again, it's why they insist on blocking any efforts toward reasonable gun control no matter how many toddlers shoot themselves, or their siblings and parents, to death. It's why they try to overturn Rose v. Wade, they'd happily go back to the days of women dying in back alleys. It's why they want to eliminate food stamps, they'd happily watch families go hungry in the wealthiest nation in the world. Conservatives care about no one but themselves.
Yes, whatever their degree of crazy, and sometimes criminality, what they all have in common is their lack of empathy. Eisenhower might have been the last Republican president without that "I got mine, screw you" attitude. And it's gotten progressively worse.
Forty years ago my father said roughly the same thing, "When Democrats vote they think of everyone. When Republicans vote they only think of themselves."
Yup, goes along with : Republican: I have mine, fuck you. Democrat: I have mine and I want you to have yours too. Independent: I have mine and I want you to have yours too, but only if it doesn't cost me anything.
I think it's a corollary to the Republican slogan, "Fuck 'em" The poor? "Fuck em" Minorities? "Fuck em" Immigrants? "oh FUCK them" Members of a different religion? "Oh FUCK them sideways with a CHAINSAW" Women, sick children, the disabled? "Fuck em, Fuck em, and fuckem"
This is close and is also the origin of the "Bleeding Heart"--I've had too many encounters with liberals who believe some solution is imperfect because one tiny hypothetical demographic might have a problem and thus complain rather than accept the good that is there.
Yes IM. In today's world of labels.....this is ok. And abt right. But !!!! As many labels twisted and definition's tweaked in last few years. "Conservative" is one of my pet peeves. Because I have always believed in conserving our natural resources, infrastructure, social services, historic sites, national parks, and lands. Just like everything connected to the current republican party? .Conservative? now means It is twisted tweaked smelly corporate waste. Conserve, is a good word and meaning in the real world. Conserve our social services and add to them. Conserve our history and national parks. Conserve our natural resources. Conserve our right to live, liberty and pursuit of happiness. End citizen united today.
What you really want is to "preserve" social services, historic sites, national parks, etc. "Conserve" is more often used for preparing jams or jellies from fresh fruit. And the word "conservative" has an almost purely political sense today. Beaglemom
The one concept that I could never quite wrap my head around is the "What's in it for me" mentality of these supposedly conservative candidates. I hope that the Trumps, Cruz's, etc keep appealing to the conservative base. Because I want Democrats and, especially liberal Democrats to galvanize, organize, and get people to the polls like never before. I keep hearing and reading that the pendulum has moved too far to the left in American politics,I want to not only see it continue, but build on the progress we've made under President Obama's administration. People don't want a hand out, they want a hand up.
Exactly.
