Doctor points out that though he is attacking Planned Parenthood today Ben Carson also used fetal parts in his own research. Not the same thing says Carson.

Oh you weren't supposed to find that.
Courtesy of Dr. Jen Gunter's blog:

Dr. Ben Carson, GOP nominee hopeful, told Fox’s Megyn Kelly that “There’s nothing that can’t be done without fetal tissue” and that the benefits of fetal tissue have been “over promised” and the results have “very much under-delivered.”

Carson also said, “At 17 weeks, you’ve got a nice little nose and little fingers and hands and the heart’s beating. It can respond to environmental stimulus. How can you believe that that’s just a[n] irrelevant mass of cells? That’s what they want you to believe, when in fact it is a human being.”

While opining on the uselessness of fetal tissue research to Megyn Kelly Dr. Carson neglected to mention his own paper Colloid Cysts of the Third Ventricle: Immunohistochemical evidence for nonneuropithelial differentiation published in Hum Pathol 23:811-816 in 1992. The materials and methods describe using “human choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation.”

Yes, Dr. Ben Carson has done research on fetal tissue and published his findings. His name is on the paper so that means he had a substantive role in the research and supports the methods and findings.

Dr. Gunter also posted scans of Carson's paper to make her point.

 Can you say "awkward?"

So here you have a neurosurgeon, who knows from personal experience the benefits of fetal tissue research, joining the mouth breathers in the Republican part in their attack on Planned Parenthood.

However when confronted with this revelation, Carson claimed that his research did not mean he was wrong about Planned Parenthood:

On the campaign trail in Manchester, New Hampshire, Carson told CNN his research simply used the tissue from aborted fetuses that was made available to him.

"We have banked material in the pathology lab from people from every age -- from day 1 of concept to 120 years told. Those specimens are available for people who want to do comparisons," Carson said. "To not use the tissue that is in a tissue bank, regardless of where it comes from, would be foolish. Why would anybody not do that?"

Of his own research -- which was to determine the patients who would be likely to develop certain health issues later in life -- Carson said, "That's a very different thing from killing babies, manipulating them, taking their tissue, selling them...To try to equate those things is absolutely ridiculous."

So I guess we will assume that the fetal tissue that Carson used came from fetuses that voluntarily gave their life to science.  Right?

Or does he simply not care how the "banked material" was gathered because it was not something he could have used back then to fire up the conservative base and help him win the GOP nomination?

You know just when I think I have seen the worst case of hypocrisy that I can possibly imagine, I am proved wrong once again.

He is a piece of work. Number one: No one is selling fetal tissue, nor killing babies to make a profit. Nice fear-mongering, Doc.
Number two: some abortions are medically necessary to save the woman
Number three: when a fetus is dead, it should be delivered, again, to save the mother
Number Four: When did the neurosurgeon become an OB-GYN able to make pronouncements about a fetus at various ages?
Number Five: Where does Carson think those tissues came from? GOD?
Number Six: 20% of pregnancies end in miscarriage..did God make a mistake? And how come the GOP is now charging women who miscarry with murder?
Number Seven: Someone please put this party out of its misery-they are beyond help now.

Wow. Had to go back more than 20 years. And, if he did use it, that doesn't mean that PP didn't sell tissue. There are surely some compelling evidence to the contrary. An investigation is needed. To clear the air, if nothing else.

  2. He is just a total lying hypocrite!!! It would be interesting to find out WHERE the "tissue bank" gets their tissue from?
Dr. Jen Gunther is a well respected Dr. in Women's health. I'm so glad she is exposing this huge hypocrite!

I'm guessing he was paid very well for that tidbit of hogwash from some Fundie organization that we have heard other outlandish PP statements from. Bless his heart!

  4. And, also,too....
as he describes the fetal tissues attributes he does sound like a "giddy asshole" to me...a bit too happy! What a hypocrite and lets face it, you don't get to be a "brain surgeon" without practicing on probably animals, cadavers or ??? How EXACTLY do you LEARN to do Surgery on the Brain? Not by reading Gray's anatomy...

It is reprehensible that he refers to fetal tissue as 'babies'. He knows better. Undeveloped fetal tissue is not a 'baby', and for a medical doctor to suggest otherwise is cynical at best and flatly dishonest at worst. What a tool this guy is, I don't care how famous his work is, he's a disingenuous creep.

When he works on babies in the womb, and heals them, when they have arms, legs, heart, liver, brain, their own blood type...etc. he is right to call them babies. To say fetal tissue, when they mean arms, liver, brain, is very disingenuous.

Take that those of you who've been skeptical of a brain surgeon running for President! He seems to be morphing into the perfect republican politician right before our eyes.

  7. BTW here is Dr. Jen's blog post from today:
Ben Carson has still not answered the right questions about his fetal tissue research

Thanks for the link. It clarifies succinctly, the difference between spontaneous abortion (yielding abnormal fetal tissue) and fetal tissue from abortions (that yeilds more useful information because the tissue is "normal".

This is typically massive bullshit from the religious hypocrites.

When Rush Liimbaugh calls people retards, $arah Palin excuses it as satire, but only SHE gets to decide that others can't use that word
Same thing with Carson. HE can use fetal tissue, cuz it just showed up in the human parts bank, but anyone else doing so, or advocating for donating the tissue is an abortion Barbie librul commie hater bastard.

Carson is profoundly unqualified and unsuited to be President, and shows great arrogance to even run.

He's a 100% political novice. If someone showed up in his operating room who had ZERO education or experience in medicine, he'd kick them out in one second.

What makes this religious hypocrite think he's qualified to run the largest economy in the world, and preside over the USA government?

On a side note, I'll bet that EVERY one of the Christian Taliban candidates, (huck, cruz, santorum, perry, carson, etc) would vote for abortion in one minute if their own precious, subordinate Christian wife had an ectopic pregnancy threatening to kill her any minute.

Maybe not if it were their wife, but their mistress? Oh yes, in a heartbeat. Then again, 7:50 could be right, too.

Oh this is so ironic, now isn't it? Look Gryphen, Erik from Redstate is trying to put the hate genie back in the bottle as if he wasn't the one to wine and dine it's ugliness. Now that it's directed at him, he's crying foul and begging for a reprieve. Isn't gonna happen, you hypocritical asshat. All this hate was fine when it was directed at Obama and Pelosi and Reid. All this vileness was fine when it was directed at Liberals and Progressives and Democrats, but now that they are ripping you a new asshole, you're crying and whining about 'changing the tone'? Live with it, drown in it for all I care, it's all yours.

...These are some of the emails I have gotten this week. They are still coming, even now this morning. The only thing I’ve done in the first three emails is delete references to Megyn Kelly out of respect for her. Those three emails all called her horrific vulgarities, sometimes in even more horrific combinations.

But these are the comments about me.

...But I don’t get this anger. If this is the anger that flows out of Trump supporters, I do not think it is sustainable. Yet it comes daily. It is poisonous to debate, to democracy, and to the soul itself.

Dr. Carson is considered to be a brilliant doctor and that is good. How does he think that his skills as a neurosurgeon translate into that of an effective president? The two are almost mutually exclusive. His lack of political experience was just proved with his statements about Planned Parenthood and fetal tissue research. He was busted by a fellow doctor.

Is he that politically naive? Guess so. Bye, Dr. Carson.

As a pathology professional who does the type of immunohistochemical staining that Carson used in his paper, and who knows how tissue is obtained from all kinds of sources, I think that Carson is just a collossal idiot in his ivory tower who has no concept of how things actually happen in the world. Nor does he seem to have any inkling that what PP does is absolutely legal and within the accepted ethical standards of all tissue procurement in the US.

In some way or another, we've all benefited from information and cures made possible from research using fetal tissue. Remember when President GWBush outlawed "new stem cell harvesting" and limited scientists and doctors to use stem cells already "banked"? Well, that was the same bullshit Dr, Bejamin Carson's lips are saying, while his hands and mind are doing the exact opposite. Dr Ben needs to be more truthful in his statements and deeds and stop the insanity of pushing "sales of fetal tissue".
Yes, the fetus Dr Ben spoke of has fingers and toes and can react to external stimuli etc etc etc. BUT it can't do so on it's own, outside of the woman's body. As a doctor, he should and does know better, but using his "physician creds" to fraudulently accuse Planned Parenthood of "selling baby parts" and even using the term "baby" when he means "fetus" is a bit of a stretch for political points with the evangelicals and anti-choice voters.
