In response to social media outrage Zimbabwe bans hunting of lions, leopards, and elephants outside of national park.

Cecil the lion
Courtesy of 9 News:

Zimbabwe's wildlife authorities have suspended the hunting of lions, leopards and elephants around the country's biggest game reserve following the killing of a much-loved lion by a US dentist.

"Hunting of lions, leopards and elephant in areas outside of Hwange National Park has been suspended with immediate effect," Edson Chidziya, head of Zimbabwe's parks and wildlife authority Zimparks, said in a statement.

The parks body also suspended hunting with bows and arrows, except with permission from the authority's head.

"All such hunts will only be conducted if confirmed and authorized in writing by the Director-General of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, and only if accompanied by parks staff," Chidziya said.

The clampdown follows an international furore over the killing of Cecil the lion, a favourite with international tourists, who was shot with a bow and arrow by Walter Palmer outside Hwange park in early July.

I have to say that I think this is the most impressive demonstration of the impact of social media that I have ever seen.

I keep telling my often skeptical daughter that we can still change things if we work together and this is proof of that.

And not only is the hunting ban in place but Walter Palmer is currently still in hiding, and Zimbabwe is still working to extradite his loser ass back to Africa so that he can stand trial for the illegal hunt.

Hopefully this ban is permanent, and will be expanded, and is not just a stunt to deflect criticism until this whole thing dies down.

Great news ! Hoping for more positive changes in the future. I realize that for the country tourism and hunting are big money -
BUT maybe this withi this incident perhaps they will realize there is even bigger money in "photography" safari's - more folks would enjoy seeing this awesome animals and being able to photograph - I'm sure they can find ways to increase regular tourism with package deals, and come up with "exclusive" luxury packages for the rich folks (and they would have way more tourists then the handful of mentall ill sociopaths who enjoy killing and taking innocent lifes just to stroke their egos!)

    1. Cecil the Lion would have generated a lot more revenue in tourism than that $55,000.

As soon as Zimbabwe and other countries realize this, they'll stop trophy hunting.

Trophy hunting should be outlawed. Everyone requesting a permit should be mailed a bottle of Viagra.

United and American join Delta in banning big game trophies from their flights

    http://qz.com/471395/united-and-american-join-delta-in-banning-big-game-trophies-from-their-flights/

In a win for outraged animal advocates, Delta Airlines, the largest US carrier to Africa, announced today that it would ban the freight shipment of all lion, leopard, elephant, rhinoceros, and buffalo trophies globally.

Although the airline did not mention it, the move comes amid pressure from animal rights groups after beloved lion Cecil was killed in Zimbabwe by an American dentist in July. Had Cecil’s body not been seized by Zimbabwean authorities, Delta would have been a likely carrier of the prized parts for Walter Palmer, who shot Cecil, to transport them home (Delta is the only American airline company to offer direct flights to Africa).

A handful of other airlines—including British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qantas, Qatar, Etihad, Iberia, Singapore and Brussels Airlines—had already banned shipments of some exotic animal hunting trophies. Delta had been noticeably absent from the list.

Virgin has also announced that it will not transport murdered animals. This is all due to people signing online petitions, and our next targets are UPS and FedEx. Find a petition and sign it!! It works.

IIRC, she justified her hunting by quoting the Bible.

Zimbabwe is more progressive than AK. I believe hunting/trapping is still allowed directly outside Denali Nat Park? In the state park area? Easy enough to lure the Park's predators...

As for Palmer, may he find Zimbabwe justice to be equivalent to what he did to Cecil!

    1. And other states.

I believe someone shot a prize elk that stepped one toe out of Yellowstone.

And the female wolf that was looking to set up in the Grand Canyon is now dead.

The most popular excuse hunters use is "I thought it was a coyote." Then they get off scot free to do it all over again.

So you can change gun laws in an instant? If only we considered schoolchildren, church-goers and movie patrons endangered, perhaps USA could emulate Zimbabwe.

It seems the tables have been turned on Dr. Palmer and ironically, the "Hunter" (Palmer) is now the one who is being hunted! Poetic justice.

So the coward is still in hiding. What is the bounty for his head?
Can the bounty hunters use bows and arrows?

Yes, but death is too quick if you shoot through the eye. Aim for the gut and let him suffer for 3 days, THEN bring in his head.

I'm from a family of hunters... people who shot deer and elk to provide meat for the larder. Dry cows are preferred over "trophy males" since the meat is less stinky with hormones.

My great-aunt Georgie killed a cougar that was in the paddock terrorizing her horses. I'm not happy about it, but I can accept it. Her son and his snowmobiling buddies chasing a deer to death for "sport" I can not accept (and haven't spoken to him since).

The very thought of these rich bastards paying obscene amounts (to the natives) to fly around the globe killing animals that aren't needed for food (who eats lion meat?) and who aren't bothering or threatening them is totally abhorrent to me. And then blaming the native guide for the illegality is just chicken-shit. Tieing a dead animal as bait and luring Cecil out of the Park was obviously wrong. The fact that this hunter has done it before with a bear means that he KNOWS it is wrong. Full penalties for first degree murder!

That money could have been spent to dig a well or build a school or investigate an archeological site. A nicely-lighted photo of him in front of a building with his name on it is also a trophy shot, and a legacy.

Instead, there is a rotting carcass left on the plains and some asshole left deciding where to mount his trophy while he brags about his kill online. It is no longer enough to impress the dinner guests; strangers around the world are invited to comment upon one's prowess.

I hope that the coward is extradited and faces true justice, both for the illegal killing and the removal of the GPS collar.

    2. Better justice would be to extradite him to Zimbabwe. 15 years on a Zimbabwe prison seems about right.

This is wonderful news, even though it took the poaching of Cecil for it come about, at least maybe he did not die just to be mounted on a wall.

The other good news is Jericho is fine, another magnificent creature and appears to be protecting Cecil's offspring.

For anyone interested here is the web site of the researchers from Oxford, which has news on Jericho etc.

Cecil's death has mobilized the entire globe in a way that would not have been possible without the internet, social media and viral media. His death is deeply troubling, and sad, AND he was important enough that his loss will ultimately bring enormous change to the world of trophy hunting. And that's a good thing. And so is this:

It just seems like this needs to be seen right now.

"The words "LION Killer" are spray-painted on the garage door of Walter James Palmer, the Minnesota hunter whose killing of a beloved lion in Zimbabwe sparked international furor.

WINK reported that there were bloody pigs feet on the driveway of the home and animal crackers in cups near the bushes at the front of the home.

The Marco Island house is the 55-year-old dentist's $1.1 million vacation home."

    1. I think the Marco Island home is his vacation home in Florida. He also has a home in Minnesota. Both are staked out by media hoping to track him down.

Now he knows what it's like to be stalked. Too bad he doesn't have an arrow in his ass the whole time.

It's a little good news, I hope this sparks a movement to end hunting exotic animals for show. I paged through a "gun" magazine in a Dr's Office. These uber rich people don't know the first thing about real hunting, all they want is a trophy, at any cost. There are advertisements in their rags to gin up business. The photos are a mix of disgusting bloodlust and the best quality land cruisers, tricked out with bathrooms, bars, wait staff, all the comforts of home.
It won't bring back Cecil, but it's a small consolation knowing maybe his death wasn't in vain. Airlines are refusing to transport "Trophy" animals and "poached goods" in their cargo areas.

    1. The death of Cecil was disgusting.

He was lured out of the park with a dead animal dragged behind a truck, then he was baited so that the coward could shoot him for the comfort of a blind.

The Doctor must be a really lousy shot since they had to track Cecil for 40 hours.

This all happened at night so don't tell me it was kosher.

Also, the doctor paid TWICE the going rate of $26,000. Makes me wonder if he wanted Cecil and not just any old lion. Also if he paid double because the hunt was illegal and he knew it. Needed to pay extra to the guide and land owner for their extra risk.

After they killed Cecil Palmer had his photo taken. Now at that point they KNEW he had a collar on. Instead of turning him in with an apology, they tried to hide what they had done by beheading him, skinning him and then trying to destroy the collar, which the guide says he returned to the bait sight.

Every way you look at this it was poaching. If Palmer is extradited to Zimbabwe that is what they are going to find. But he'll probably buy his way out of prison with a hefty fine.

Since Palmer has a history of lying and poaching, he has good reason to be in hiding and to try to fight the extradition. 15 years in a Zimbabwean prison won't be pleasant.

I agree with every word of your comment, what bothered me most paging through that magazine, was actual advertising specifically geared for people like Dr Palmer. Filthy Rich and with a sense of entitlement.

The hunting advocates are already hitting the morning shows. CBS This Morning the other day had on some bozo, speaking with a forked tongue, trying to excuse trophy hunting by stating that the money goes to conservation blah blah.

The worst part was Norah O'Donnell got her facts wrong and stated Cecil suffered for 40 MINUTES instead of HOURS before he died,( Sent CBS an email telling them how disappointed I was they got this very important fact wrong).

The bozo had the audacity to state it takes a pack of wolves 40 mins to kill a mule deer. I guess wolves don't have guns, what a moron.

The dentist is evil, bragging to a bartender he has some record for the largest lion killed, knowing he broke the law, no remorse until he got caught.

But that wasn't enough, he wanted to kill an elephant with a 63 lb tusk-I googled it and that is huge elephant. Again breaking the law. Was he planning on smuggling the ivory into the US or selling it on the black market?

(Also found a disgusting "sportsman's" web site with photos of so called hunters with dead elephants- had to be hundreds of photos, no wonder they are endangered.)

I can't decide what would be a fitting punishment, since lions can't go after him with a cross bow and I doubt he will do prison time in Zimbabwe.

He should be banned him from hunting for the rest of his life, but how that could that be enforced since he has no regard for the law.

Hit him where it hurts-in the pocketbook, fine him $5 million dollars or more, which would be donated to the Oxford Research Group (he can sell his house in FL to start with), also flag his passport so he has difficulties leaving the US.

Personally I think the coward is already out of the country, hiding in Canada or some country that doesn't have extradition to the US.

      ------------
From reading the transcript of the guides "account" it was already dusk when they began the hunt, the dentist shot Cecil at 10 PM, but didn't know if he was wounded or not. Because it was dark they went back to camp and began to track him the next day.

As Joe Biden would say what a bunch of malarkey. Sounds like they knew exactly what they were doing was illegal. Who goes wandering around the Africa bush at night, unless you are up to no good.

  17. Both of these women should be required to eat the entire Giraffe, then skin, tan and wear the hides so they can be identified for the killers they are.

There is absolutely no excuse to kill a giraffe.

And the bible says we are supposed to be caretakers of the earth. Not squander and devastate it for our personal pleasure and greed.
