President Obama arrives in Alaska. Update!

So the President has landed here in Anchorage, and he is currently staying at the Captain Cook hotel only eight miles from where I am right now, and a place where I once spent the night in order to impress some woman I was dating.

I have been invited to a rally downtown tomorrow for the President but I think work is going to make that impossible.  (I know that most people think this is my job, but yeah not so much.)

As Anchorage prepares for the Commander-in-Chief there have been a few bumps, such as the fact that APD accidentally towed away a Secret Service vehicle.

But don't worry they put it back.

Apparently while up here the President will participate in one of our favorite Alaskan pastimes, appearing in a reality show:

Obama will appear on a special episode of the NBC outdoor adventure show Running Wild with Bear Grylls, the network announced Monday in a news release. The president and the host will be trekking through the Alaskan wilderness. The episode, to be taped, will air on NBC later this year. It will highlight the effects of climate change in that area.

You know I bet that episode gets MUCH higher ratings than another short lived reality show featuring a politician that I can think of.

As previously reported the President will be here all the way through Wednesday of this week, and I am sure that he will be greeted warmly by most of my fellow Alaskans.

To be honest so long as he avoids the Mat-Su Valley and Fairbanks he will probably see mostly friendly faces.

Speaking of friendly faces, the President might also want to avoid going to Ohio anytime soon as they are in a real snit over his decision to officially rename our largest mountain by the name we have been calling it all along.

Apparently by doing that he has insulted Ohioans, disappointed Republicans, angered conservatives, and pissed in John Kasich's cornflakes.

Yeah Kasich kind of lost me there, but all I know is that it is none of his, the Republicans, or the people of Ohio's business what we call OUR mountain.

If they want to honor William McKinley so badly why don't they name one of THEIR mountains after him?

Oh that's right, they don't have any.

Update: Well Donald Trump just lost the Alaskan vote.

Good God Carnations, thanks but no thanks! Back in the mid 80's I had a prom date bring me a carnation corsage... we knew this guy didn't have the brains (or cash) to order something more appropriate so my mother had an orchid corsage waiting in the fridge and we politely explained to him that really, you don't even give your worst enemy carnations...they are the white trash of the flower world! Back, carnations, the flowers that you don't even give your worst enemy! However, Ohio, yes, that explains a lot!

The state of Alaska has a Board of Geographic Names. The state board changed the name of the mountain to "Denali." The Board determines geographic names for use in state documents.

The federal Board of Geographic Names determines geographic names ONLY in federal documents. It has no power to force a state board to use the federal names.

So if Republican Alaskans are so keen on the McKinley name, they'll have get the Alaskan State Board of Geographic Names to abandon the use of "Denali". Once they have achieved that, they can petition the Federal Board.... good luck to them. It might take 40 some years, but sheer pig-headed stubborness is valued in the GOP (see NRA support for examples).

On they day he was assassinated, he encountered a little girl and gave her his carnation. Moments later, Leon Czolgosz, his assassin emerged from the crowd and shot him twice. After his assassination, Ohio made the red carnation the state flower.

Since it is not a "state" issue, why does the Ohio congressmen, Rugula, get to make such a stink about it for so many years? The national park is named "Denali National Park and Preserve". Maybe Ohio can get off their fat little lazy hind ends and lobby to get the park renamed to McKinley if they care so much about naming things in other states.

The American people could change the name of "Absoraka Mountains" in Yellowstone National Park to "McKinley Mountains". Ohio would be happy. And destroying a perfectly good Native American name like "Absoraka" is just the kind of thing that would make that Ohio Congressman happy.

McKinley is a fine name. There's a mountain somewhere without a name that can be called McKinley. The problem is the mountain named "Denali" already had a name before a dumb prospector made a JOKE and picked the name McKinley.

There is a federal law that says if federal Board of Geographic Names doesn't act after a reasonable time, the executive can does so. He has done so. The American people can get that law changed if they want. But for now, the law is working the way it is supposed to for the benefit of the American people.

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, was first in line to shake the president's hand, followed by several others, including Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz and Alaska First Lady Donna Walker.

Walker hugged Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott, who was second in line to greet the president, wearing a traditional vest.

The crowd cheered as Obama walked over to meet others.

"Hey, how's it going everybody?" the president said. "It's beautiful today. Thank you so much, it's wonderful to be here. Thank you, it's great to be here,"

He gave a high-five to a small boy in the crowd.

Poldine Carlo, 94, was there to greet the president and sang a song about Denali, out of excitement for the just-announced name change for America's highest peak.

      http://theobamadiary.com/2015/08/31/welcome-to-alaska-mr-president/

In the lobby of the Hotel Captain Cook, Alaska Gov. Bill Walker discussed his flight from D.C. with the president aboard Air Force One.

"I've flown - I've arrived in Alaska many ways, but that, I've got to say was one of the most enjoyable," Walker said of landing in the presidential aircraft. "It was really fun. Good experience. It's a good opportunity for me to have a very meaningful discussion with the president."

Asked how much face-time he got with Obama, Walker said he first took a tour of Air Force One, from cockpit to tail.

"So that was a big tour," he said. "Then we had a couple times we sat down and visited. So I don't know, an hour and a half would be my guess."

"It was very good, it was meaningful," he said. "It was not just a momentary thing. It was very exciting, so, very exciting."

    http://www.politico.com/story/2015/08/denali-mt-mckinley-alaska-barack-obama-republican-reaction-213178

The Mountain received it's 'McKinley' name when a random gold prospector saw it, then discussed it in a New York Post interview, because he was a McKinley supporter during his campaign. This happened well before his Presidency and before his assassination. This was not a commemorative choice, it was a partisan campaign choice. Since McKinley was an advocate of the gold standard, the gold prospector like that preserving it it would maintain high gold valuations.

...Obama doesn't, but the Sec of the Interior DOES have the authority to change THIS law..a power given to IT by our CONGRESS!

"...the name Mt McKinley was formalized in 1917 when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Mount McKinley National Park Act, which required the park to be "dedicated and set apart as a public park for the benefit and enjoyment of the people under the name of the Mount McKinley National Park.

But another law passed in 1947 gives the Secretary of the Interior and the Board on Geographic Names the power to "provide for uniformity in geographic nomenclature and orthography throughout the federal government."

    http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/USCODE-2010-title43/html/USCODE-2010-title43-chap11A-sec364.htm

...This is actually one thing I agree with Obama doing. Alaska has been trying to get the federal government to recognize this mountain as Denali for decades and, for some reason, they have refused to do so. This is not a renaming as much as it is restoring a name. Denali was the name of the mountain BEFORE Russia colonized the territory, Russia's name for the mountain was a translation of of Denali. The first informal naming of the mountain as McKinley came BEFORE he was even President. He had been nominated, and the fact that he was a strong proponent of the gold standard is what led to this naming. McKinley was from Ohio and he never even visited Alaska. Seems to me that his name should be on something better associated with him. The mountain should NEVER have been named for him in the first place.

...I'm a longtime mountaineer and I haven't heard the name McKinley in decades. In the mountaineering community the mountain has long been known as Denali. I think many of my fellow mountaineers feel as I do, a great respect for the original name and the rich heritage it conveys. I've always preferred indigenous names to our preference for naming peaks after presidents and other famous people who had no relationship whatsoever to the mountain range. The Spanish came up with some beautiful descriptive names too. Sangre de Cristos, for instance--blood of Christ. A name that speaks volumes about the beliefs of the conquistadors and their attitudes toward the natural world as a fierce, unforgiving place. In Colorado we have mountains named after Ivy League colleges and states like Texas and Oklahoma. These types of names don't begin to express the physical attributes that make each mountain in this state so distinctive and awe-inspiring, so deserving of being appreciated on its own terms, not ours. In the presence of a mountain we are but specks of dust in a creation story of a planet, indeed the entire cosmos.

    ...Murkowski hailed Obama's decision Sunday.
“For centuries, Alaskans have known this majestic mountain as the 'Great One,'“ she said in a statement from Denali's Ruth Glacier. “Today we are honored to be able to officially recognize the mountain as Denali. I'd like to thank the president for working with us to achieve this significant change to show honor, respect and gratitude to the Athabascan people of Alaska.”

Plus, don't like her politics - she's far from being a straight shooter. And, she's very anti President Obama and has been a bitch to him along with the rest of the Alaska delegation.

"It's not an arbitrary change," Earnest told reporters, referring to the dethroning of former President William McKinley, a native of Ohio. "In fact, this is an effort to align the policies of the federal government with what Alaskan Natives have referred to that way for thousands of years. And so this seems to be a common-sense way for us to acknowledge that name.

"The Department of Interior, I understand, has said that they will work with leaders in Ohio, especially, who are especially interested in this to find an appropriate way to acknowledge President McKinley’s contribution to our country," he continued. "That's an appropriate thing to do and that's what the Department of Interior is looking at."

  33. The fuckers blather on and on about "We the people" and states' rights but when the people of the state of Alaska, through their elected state legislature, agreed to change the name of a mountain located in their state, approval of the name change by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names was blocked by that twatwaffle Ralph Regula, congressman from Ohio. Christ in a handbag! Of course, if we Alaskans had wanted to change McKinley to a non-Alaska Native (Athabaskan) name--a white name like Reagan-, let's say, it would have sailed through. As Larry McMurtry wrote in The Last Picture Show, "I've been around that trashy behavior all my life. I'm tired of puttin' up with it." ... In 1896, a gold prospector emerged from the Alaskan wilderness brimming with stories about the frontier, including the sight of a majestic mountain that natives had long called Denali, or "the high one."

The prospector had another idea: name the peak after a Republican from Ohio who was running for president on a platform that included linking American currency to the value of gold.

    His name was William McKinley.

... But even McKinley scholars admit that naming a mountain in Alaska after him was kind of ridiculous.

"Ohio politicians have a number of presidents to boast of, few of whom are distinguished," said Lewis Gould, author of "The Presidency of William McKinley" and a University of Texas historian. "I think that in this case, they're overblowing it."

The president, Gould added, is simply correcting "a historical accident."

The original mistake, historians say, is that no one bothered to ask Alaska's Native Americans what the mountain should be named when the area around it became a national park in 1917. That's when the McKinley title became official, and began appearing on government maps.

Ever since, Alaska's indigenous people have seen the move as one of many displays of disrespect. Non-Native-American Alaskans, who also call the mountain Denali, agree.

After Alaska became a state in 1959, local leaders began pushing to restore the original name. But they were blocked by Republicans from Ohio, who used bureaucratic maneuvers to prevent a change in the law.

Momentum began to turn after Obama became president and acknowledged the U.S.' history of violence and disenfranchisement against Native Americans. Some tribal leaders say he's done more than any other president to heal old wounds.

In that sense, the mountain's name change may seem superficial, but not to those who live with it on their landscape.

President Barack Obama challenged fellow world leaders in unusually blunt language Monday to act boldly on climate change or "condemn our children to a world they will no longer have the capacity to repair."

In a forceful address intended to highlight the perils of global warming and cement his environmental legacy, Obama opened the "GLACIER" conference in Anchorage, Alaska, by declaring: "We are not moving fast enough. None of the nations represented here are moving fast enough."

That includes the U.S., which Obama said "recognizes our role in creating this problem and embraces our role in solving it."

17:09 Secret Service wants reindeer subs

Alaska's Gourmet Subs is the closest lunch place to the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center, and on Monday, the eatery could barely keep up with demand for sandwiches from a large and insatiable security force guarding the high-profile GLACIER conference across the street.

"90 percent of the people over there, they've come here," said owner Brian Minderman, gesturing at security guards flanking the building, where President Obama was at a roundtable meeting with Alaska Native groups on Monday afternoon.

The staff had prepared "hundreds, easy" of sandwiches for security staff. The most popular: Reindeer sausage, following by "The Skinny Raven," a tribute to staff at the nearby apparel and shoe store. A few people had asked if the Skinny Raven sandwich included actual raven. Nope, turkey.

The US Board on Geographic Names does the actual naming. Like all federal agencies they tend to pat themselves on the back using taxpayer funds. Here's a description of their upcoming festivities (why do I have to pay for this crap):

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) will be observing its 125th anniversary by inviting the public to a one-day symposium on geographic names, “Traditions and Transitions”. The event, at the Library of Congress, will be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 ..., followed by an Open House and special exhibit from the Library of Congress. No registration is required to attend.

The symposium morning session keynote speech will feature "Geographic Names: Roles, Rhetoric, and Resistance", plus presentations on national naming authorities, and the origins and evolution of the BGN. The afternoon session will feature presentations on tribal names, English-language names in a multi-lingual world, and the state of volunteer geographic information. The Library of Congress Geography and Map Division will host a special exhibit and Open House following the program. Featured items will include historical documents, maps and associated materials of the Board on Geographic Names.

RESTORED is the proper thing to say, not CHANGE, since it was robbed from the Native Alaskans in the first place, it has now been restored to it's appropriate and correct name. It is just plain mooseshit to suggest anything otherwise. The white man stole so much, it's about time that the mountain is called what it was called for thousands of years before greedy white men came looking to plunder her for gold. And in case anyone has any pushback on what I just said. I am a white person. I also am a person who knows what is right, what is appropriate and what is to be recognized and honored by those who came long before we did and no surprise it is Barack Obama who is making this happen. Before Sarah Palin blasts out a Facebook post about President Obama renaming Mount McKinley, Denali – I want to remind her of this…an excerpt from her farewell speech.

“Soaring through nature’s finest show. Denali, the great one, soaring under the midnight sun. And then the extremes in the winter time. It’s the frozen road that is competing with the view of ice fogged frigid beauty. The cold though, doesn’t it split the Cheechakos from the Sourdoughs?

And then in the summertime such extreme. Summertime, about a hundred and fifty degrees hotter than just some months ago, than just some months from now. With fireweed blooming along the frost heaves and merciless rivers that are rushing and carving and reminding us that here, Mother Nature wins and it is as throughout all Alaska that big wild good life teeming along the road that is north to the future.”

There Are No Perfect Nuclear Deals

During the Cold War both Republican and Democratic presidents accepted less-than-perfect arms pacts with the Soviets. We need to do the same with Iran.

By Sam Nunn and Richard Lugar

      http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/08/there-are-no-perfect-nuclear-deals-121810

Open Letter to the American People from Iranian Civil Society Activists and Intellectuals on the Nuclear Deal
      August 2015

We are a group of Iranian civil society activists, intellectuals, journalists, lawyers, university professors, religion investigators, senior members of political parties and reformists. We are writing to you at this historic moment in the relations between our two countries to make an appeal for your support of the nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

We have long been committed to upholding the values of tolerance, pluralism, human rights and the peaceful relations between nations. We deeply believe that a just and reasonable solution for international disputes is through negotiation not by using the right of power and imposing unilateral views on others. We strongly believe if this nuclear agreement is approved and implemented, it holds the promise of the gradual realization of these universal values within Iran, along with the possibility of better relations between our two nations.

We are deeply concerned about the consequences that might result from the rejection of this nuclear agreement. Economic sanctions against Iran will increase, as will the likelihood of war. This would be a catastrophe for the Middle East. Another war in this region would strengthen the forces of extremism and undermine the forces that work for nonviolence, peace and reconciliation; the ripple effects of another war would be felt far and wide, and would destabilize the international system for years to come.

For all of the above reasons, we are appealing to you at this critical juncture in history. We urge you to seize this unique opportunity, and to impress upon your elected representatives in Congress of the importance of supporting this nuclear agreement. Another opportunity of this magnitude may not present itself again in our lifetime. We owe it to future generations of Iranians, Americans and Middle Easterners to raise our collective voices in support of peace and diplomacy.

We look forward to a day in the future when Iranians no longer have to write open letters to Americans, but can meet face to face with mutual respect and dignity based on shared civilizational values that bind us together as citizens of this planet.
      Sincerely,

The insult is compounded by the fact that William McKinley presided over the massacre of indigenous peoples during a period of American expansion, justified under calls for “manifest destiny.” McKinley’s greatest atrocities were not conducted against Native Americans, but rather against Filipinos, 200,000 of which were slaughtered by U.S. forces while McKinley was President. Nevertheless, the cruel irony is not lost on the native people of Alaska. Ohio Republicans would rather honor an imperialist president who crushed indigenous people in the Pacific than respect the folks who live near the slopes of Denali.

President Obama was right to restore the name Denali, to America’s most majestic peak. While renaming the over 20,000 foot high mountain is at best, a symbolic gesture, it is an important one that recognizes the dignity of the Athabaskan people of Alaska.

President Obama had dinner Monday night at the South Anchorage home of Alaska Dispatch News publisher Alice Rogoff.

Rogoff, who has been acquainted with the president for several years, described it as a private dinner featuring an Alaska-grown menu. She did not disclose who attended the dinner or how many guests were invited.

“It was a chance for the president to have a conversation with a diverse group of Alaskans,” Rogoff said. Because it was a private dinner, no guest list will be distributed, she said. She described it as a “non-political event.”

President Obama created quite a stir as he made his way, including on Minnesota Drive, a 65-mile-an-hour highway where motorists traveling the opposite direction had simply stopped their cars in the left lane or attempted to pull over and got out to shoot photographs or video of the motorcade passing by.

Alaskans ‘Rising Together,’ rolling out red carpet for President Obama

More than 20 Alaskan community groups and organizations came together to put on a public celebration in honor of Obama’s visit to Alaska. The event, called “Rising Together,” will take place Aug. 31 — the day Obama touches down in the Last Frontier — and will feature hours-long fellowship, cultural performances and presentations.

"Obama departed Air Force One at 1:45 p.m. with Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, who had flown with the president from Washington, D.C.

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, was first in line to shake the president's hand,"

The half term governor will blow a gasket if she reads this. I'm pretty sure Dan "Ohio" Sullivan is one of her LEAST favorite people. Because he knows.

I didn't think President Obama looked all that happy about being monopolized by Sullivan at the bottom of the stairs of the airplane.

I also noticed that Sullivan appeared to jump in ahead of Byron Mallott in greeting President Obama. Who had priority? The native Lt. Gov. or the white asshole from Ohio that hasn't acted Alaskan a day in his friggin' life!

There are SO many things McCain is not aware of. Graduating 895 from a class of 899, he proved WHY when he picked $carah as his VP. I think he would have flunked out of the Naval Academy if not for the fact that his father and grandfather were admirals. Lumpy little fraud should have retired years ago.

A bit of history: President McKinley was not mortally wounded by the gunshot. He died of infection several days later because his doctor refused to wash his hands before removing the bullet. McKinley's death promoted Teddy Roosevelt to president.

You've confused McKinley with Garfield, another of the 8 Presidents from Ohio.

One bullet ricocheted off McKinley's sternum. The other entered his abdomen and wasn't found during surgery. At the autopsy it was learned gangrene developed along the path of the bullet.

Frankly I think that Denali is a beautiful name for a beautiful mountain. It's good that the largest peak in the US have a Native American name.

If any Alaskan is waiting for Sarah Palin to agree with changing the name of Mt McKinley to Denali don't hold your breath.

There may have been a chance that Sarah Palin might have posted on her facebook that she agreed with us Alaskans that changing the name is a good thing that Alaskans wanted but that ship has sunk because of boyfriend Donnie Trump.

There's no way Sarah Palin will go against Donald Trump, she would rather stay silent than loose her ticket to Washington DC.

President Obama wants to change the name of Mt. McKinley to Denali after more than 100 years. Great insult to Ohio. I will change back!
