Supreme Court rules against Kentucky county clerk who feels it is against her religious belief to issue same sex marriage licenses. Update!

Courtesy of Yahoo News:

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled against the Kentucky county clerk who has refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses, and the clerk will arrive at work Tuesday morning to face her moment of truth.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis will have to choose whether to issue marriage licenses, defying her Christian conviction, or continue to refuse them, defying a federal judge who could pummel her with fines or order that she be hauled off to jail.

"She's going to have to think and pray about her decision overnight. She certainly understands the consequences either way," Mat Staver, founder of the law firm representing Davis, said on Monday, hours before a court-ordered delay in the case expired. "She'll report to work tomorrow, and face whatever she has to face."

Apparently this lunatic stopped issuing ALL marriage licenses in the days after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality which kind of makes me wonder why she simply was not fired?

Perhaps the reason for that is because she has a lot of support in her community, which I imagine is made up of backward thinking religious nuts just like her.

When will these people realize that their faith is no excuse for denying people their human rights?

In other religious news the Pope has decided to allow Catholic priests to "forgive" women for having an abortions.

This being seen as a victory by some, but the entire idea that a man, even if that man is the Pope, has to "forgive" a woman for a decision she makes concerning her own body sickens me.

Update: A US District Court judge has ordered Davis and her entire staff to court on Thursday.

Here is her woe is me statement to the press:

"I have worked in the Rowan County Clerk's office for 27 years as a Deputy Clerk and was honored to be elected as the Clerk in November 2014, and took office in January 2015. I love my job and the people of Rowan County. I have never lived any place other than Rowan County. Some people have said I should resign, but I have done my job well. This year we are on track to generate a surplus for the county of $1.5 million.

In addition to my desire to serve the people of Rowan County, I owe my life to Jesus Christ who loves me and gave His life for me. Following the death of my godly mother-in-law over four years ago, I went to church to fulfill her dying wish. There I heard a message of grace and forgiveness and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I am not perfect. No one is. But I am forgiven and I love my Lord and must be obedient to Him and to the Word of God. I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage. To issue a marriage license which conflicts with God's definition of marriage, with my name affixed to the certificate, would violate my conscience. It is not a light issue for me. It is a Heaven or Hell decision. For me it is a decision of obedience.

I have no animosity toward anyone and harbor no ill will. To me this has never been a gay or lesbian issue. It is about marriage and God's Word. It is a matter of religious liberty, which is protected under the First Amendment, the Kentucky Constitution, and in the Kentucky Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Our history is filled with accommodations for people's religious freedom and conscience. I want to continue to perform my duties, but I also am requesting what our Founders envisioned - that conscience and religious freedom would be protected. That is all I am asking. I never sought to be in this position, and I would much rather not have been placed in this position. I have received death threats from people who do not know me. I harbor nothing against them. I was elected by the people to serve as the County Clerk. I intend to continue to serve the people of Rowan County, but I cannot violate my conscience."

So there you have it, Jesus does not want her to issue marriage licenses to them damn homosexuals and by gum she not going to do it!

I wonder if the prison has a nice chapel?

She can't be fired because it's an elected position. However, she can be held in contempt of court and either fined heavily or put in jail for contempt. Fining would be better because gofundme won't allow her to receive money for an illegal act (that would be being in contempt of court).

She is free to practice her religion in her home and at church. Her ignorant & bigoted religious views have no business being brought into the workplace. This lady needs to be replaced with someone willing to do the job as required by law.

As an elected official her "supervisors" are the people of the county and the County Commission (or whatever that county calls itself). As Gryphen pointed out, she probably has the support of both of those.

Her personal details are exactly what you'd expect. Married FOUR times. So much for following Biblical teachings.Everyone in her office is a relative. And the kicker: she makes 80K a year so no wonder she wants to stay in her sweet sweet gravy train elected job. Bets are being made to see how fast her online gofundme gravy train gets created once she gets terminated by the KY legislature.

If she had even one ounce of true integrity, she would resign her position. I know a guy who has done that--while I disagree with his beliefs, I respect his decision and his conduct (he did it very quietly, no publicity, no fuss.)

But no, she whines, stomps her feet, and
plays the noble martyr, all the while refusing to perform her elected public office, but of course holding out her hand for that $80K a year.

Not to mention her four marriages, but that's okay because they were all straight, so all that sanctity stuff, yeah, it's still all good in her case.

      Ugh. Disgusting.

    ***********
U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning wasted no time ordering bigoted and defiant Rowan County Clerk to court and explain her actions:

Rowan County Attorney Cecil Watkins says the federal court alerted him that a hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday in Ashland, and that Davis along with her entire staff has been summoned to appear.

As an elected official, Davis can't be fired; her impeachment would have to wait until the Legislature's regular session next year or a costly special session.

    ***********
So it will be very interesting to see what happens at that court appearance on Thursday morning. As for me, I hope she and her staff all get thrown in jail among the sleaziest dregs of society. I bet she'll do a lot of praying then, and I hope the answers she gets back from her version of gawd are that she's a despicable excuse for a human being and definitely NOT any kind of decent Christian.

They just don't get it. Religious freedom begins and ends at the border of themselves. It does not extend to imposing on the freedom of others. They really have no understanding of the "first amendment" they love to talk about but have likely never read.
And I quote "Freedom of religion means freedom to hold an opinion or belief, but not to take action in violation of social duties or subversive to good order." That was the Supreme Court in 1878. They also held in 1940 that "While the right to have religious beliefs is absolute, the freedom to act on such beliefs is not absolute."

Kim Davis's marriages are documented in court records obtained by U.S. News, which show that Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis divorced three times, first in 1994, then 2006 and again in 2008.

She gave birth to twins five months after divorcing her first husband. They were fathered by her third husband but adopted by her second. Davis worked at the clerk's office at the time of each divorce and has since remarried.

I am laughing so hard right now! I'm not the dumbest person in the world or the smartest. But I can't figure out how some guy adopted twins fathered by a guy who was clearly a "romantic" rival for Miss Davis' affections. Quit your job and see if you can get a reality TV show with that story, you crazy woman.

Here's Kim's problem. We have a separation of Church and State. She holds a government job, so there should not be any religion involved in it. She can practice her religion at home, in her church or almost everywhere else. But, when it comes to the final authority regarding her government job, The Judge in the Court of Law passes judgement, not God.

Dan Savage Lays Into Hypocritical KY Clerk And Her Four Marriages

...SAVAGE: And I think Kim Davis is waiting to cash in. I predicted from the beginning that she would defy all the court orders, defy the Supreme Court, that she would ultimately be held in contempt of court, lose her job, perhaps go to prison for a short amount of time. And then she will have written for her, ghost written books. She will go on the right wing lecture circuit and she'll never have to do an honest day's work ever again in her life.

This is about someone hypocritically cashing in and she is a hypocrite. She said today, and I'm going to read it because I want to get it right:

I never imagined a day like this would come, where I would be asked to violate a central teaching of Scripture and of Jesus Himself regarding marriage.

This is a woman who's been divorced three times and married four times, and I'm going to read this too:

She gave birth to twins five months after divorcing her first husband. They were fathered by her third husband but adopted by her second husband.

She's now onto her fourth husband. Jesus Christ himself in scripture condemned divorce, called it adultery and forbids is. Jesus Christ himself in scripture says not one word about same-sex marriage.

...But no one is stating the obvious: this isn't about Kim Davis standing up for her supposed principles—proof in a moment—it's about Kim Davis cashing in. There's a big pile of sweet, sweet bigot money out there waiting for her. If the owners of a pizza parlor could raise a million dollars just by threatening not to cater the gay wedding no one asked them to cater... just imagine how much of that sweet, sweet bigot money Kim Davis is going to rake in. I'm sure Kim Davis is already imagining it.

And speaking of Kim Davis' principles...

She's really pretty! I can't believe she's only had four husbands because a woman who displays such grace, wisdom and beauty should certainly have had perhaps 20 husbands.

I love how people jays try doing anything they want because "it's in the Bible".
When we were first married, we had a heated "discussion" about whose job it was to put the lights on the Christmas tree. So I wrote in the front page "It is God's will that the man must put the lights on the Christmas tree". The next year, I pulled it out and showed it to my husband. End of discussion.

  58. Central teaching of scripture? If Jesus were alive now he would have no problem with gay marriage.

God's definition of marriage or the Old Testament's definition of marriage, like two wives, concubines, slaves, sister-in-laws, etc.? That definition?

Gag me, you ignorant talibangelical cow.

Apparently she can obey her right wing nutjob church's idea but not her job definition or the Supreme Court.

If she never sought to be in that position why did she run for clerk? But she's not serving all of the people and she is not doing her job.

You want that kind of religious bigotry? Quit your job and open a bakery.

Otherwise, I hope you are fined big time and put in jail until your term is up.

I'll bet she eats shrimp and wears cotton/polyester too.

OH, and she should be stoned for adultery too.

    Self-righteous prick.

  59. This is a pure PR stunt, after she quits she is going to run for congress. And the morons will carry her on their shoulders on election day.

Hey folks this is Kentucky. Check out the Norman Goldman talk radio show /website for a fairly definitive explanation of Kentucky state law and this person's history. Apparently her family has held similar positions for a century, her mother held the same position for 50 plus years and all three of the woman's children work in state government...... FYI.....she herself has been married four times and sources state that two of her three children were born out of wedlock. Not sure how that works..,
