The history of the universe in ten minutes.

Amazing isn't it?

Of course this is only for those who are willing to accept the brutality, beauty, and unpredictability to nature.

For everybody else the go to explanation is, God did it.

I feel badly for those people.

Gryphen, your condensencion towards people of ANY faith does not advance your cause. This post just makes you look as smug and arrogant as some radical Christian. Anyone who really sees things for what they are would be agnostic. The video is very interesting and does not preclude a higher power behind the creation of the universe.

    1. Well all take umbrage when we our beliefs are challenged. For example, I find it condescending that you think one should an agnostic if I one rejects the notion of God.

I'll ask again, as I have numerous times on this site to
provide me with an understanding or a concept of God.

Assuming there is that creative intelligence, God, or whatever, how did he come into existence? What shape or form is he in? Where does he live? Where is his lab or workshop to create all things? And how were they manufactured? What does he do when not creating?
And why apparently can he only communicate through storms and natural disasters?

Admittedly, I cannot comprehend how nothing became the universe all by itself. No easier to explain than God, but somehow I am far more comforted by a benign uncaring universe than an intelligence with powers of such awesomeness that he does nothing to stop tragedy, hate, violence, terrible illnesses and the like.

      It's a conversation worth having.

You might enjoy comments on Gawker's post today about Richard Dawkins who implies that Muslim clock kid is a fraud (and implies that the kid's religion makes him suspicious). My favorite new label for loudly broadcasting atheists....evangelical atheist.

Be as atheistic as you want, no one cares or thinks less of your other opinions. Move on.

    Tell that to Stephen Hawking.

Leland, I think you have many valid points, but your rabid atheism is just as annoying as rabid Christianity. Both border on being Looney Tunes.

      @5:59

Sorry, but first off, I don't have rabies.

Second, how do you go from my above statement to my being a "rabid" atheist?

Third, if you are speaking of any of my previous posts, you may wish to read them again because I don't push my personal opinions onto anyone else's life as do almost all religions. And further, you might find that my vehemence is against organized religion and all the historic evil they have perpetrated on the world. My being an atheist is not something I try to force on others.

As for being agnostic, that, too, is a personal choice and merely a different point of view. Being an atheist does NOT preclude having that choice reversed with proof any more than being an agnostic does.

As for the Looney Tunes bit? I believe they have more intelligence than most people accept. They generally reflect the ignorance and stupidity of humanity and its societies.

Leland my friend, when you criticize a commentor's intellect for having faith in any given diety, you are effectively forcing your belief onto that person. I am not trying to be argumentative.

      @8:17.

Give me a break. It isn't possible to push one's opinion on another if you are not specifically speaking of or to that (those) individual(s). If one doesn't speak directly to an individual when denigrating a belief, it falls into the category of OPINION.

(Yes, I am aware of the old saying about opinions and assholes.)

And I don't know you at all, so please don't try to get so familiar, even if it is a standard saying. I am not your friend. COULD we be? Perhaps. Never having met you, however, precludes the possibility for the time being.

Is there a link or any type of credit for this video, Gryphen? I'd like to read more about it. Thanks in advance.

If you're a fan of science, the Newsroom, fiction reading AND happen to be appalled by Palin you might like a book I stumbled across (get it from your library). It's 'The Sign' by Raymond Khoury. It's right up my alley in terms of reading and I found myself laughing when I hit chapter 71 as it skewers Palin (I had absolutely no idea she would be referenced). Anyway, a read I really like and would recommend.

I love the concept of the film, but I think the film itself was a bit too cheesy. It could have been so much better, especially the second half. Music was awful.

Agreed. The music was awful. The beginning was good, but the filmmaker kind of dropped the ball once modern evolution began. It was kind of a letdown for me, because it started out well.

Nothing can prove God. Yet, from this video, nothing is scientifically PROVEN with evidence that this all happened this way either. Was anyone there to record it? Just because science today has a list of elements in the earth that we can work with, doesn't mean that were not other elements, unknown to man, that worked in the great creation. No one recorded the big bang. All science has is what they know what to work with here. What if a comet did hit the earth and carve out the moon? What elements prevented a nuclear explosion? What elements or particulates prevented a universal armageddon? We don't know, nor science does not know. Everything is theory.

A creator, however, gives many human beings a peace that surpasses all understanding. It forms a bond between us and our creator, where we know he has it under control. We are given the freedom on how to treat each other on earth and we've been found wanting. Yet, a higher power has a higher plan where science can't or won't, or won't admit, it has found. I trust God more than science.

Just viewed the movie, "Interstallar" and it left me with an empty feeling, where humanity had the burden of keeping itself from extinction. Faith in a loving Creator gives way from fear to hope for eternal life. 80 years plus/minus on this planet is not long, but eternal is forever. Of course, 'eternal' isn't proven, but faith doesn't need proof.

So because of a ten minute film you are willing to deny all the math and physical evidence science has developed or discovered? And at the same time you were negatively affected by a movie that was made as entertainment that was drastically panned as very weak on the science?

Do yo have electricity in your home? Do you have appliances that do your work for you? Do you drive a car? Do you use medicines? All these things and a myriad of others are things science has PROVEN!

Sure, there are a lot of things that aren't proven. Yet there are a lot of things that are as well. Time may eventually clarify all your questions, although I believe you and I will never see that.

And your final sentence is okay except that those who have faith generally attempt to force that idea on others and that isn't right in a free society.

Leland, you continue to argue with other commentors. If you are not trying to convince them that you're correct, what ate you trying to say or "proove"?

Leland, at the risk of getting attacked, I would like to point out that scientists are always changing their mind on what happened, and what is going to happen. There are scientists who have come out and stated that the big bang never happened. Respected scientists, because the physics just doesn't add up. In the 70's we were headed for another ice age, then it was no more snow in the early 2000's, now it is chaos with the weather. In not trying to deny science by any means, but we have to keep things in perspective. Scientists don't always agree, and not because someone is off their meds. It is because information can be interpreted many different ways. And new information is becoming available all the time, and sometimes people want to be right so badly that they make stuff up, such as the Piltdown man.

      @ 9:38 and 6:52.

"Yet, from this video, nothing is scientifically PROVEN with evidence that this all happened this way either." Sounds very much like the commenter is saying the video has nothing to say of any value, thus my initial paragraph.

Specifically @ 9:38: I was not attempting to prove I am correct. Quite the contrary. I was merely pointing out the commenter's thesis that "I trust god more than science" is not accurate. If that were the case, he/she would be out in some cave somewhere refusing to accept the things science HAS given us and living his/her life as a Luddite. I wanted to point out that he/she DOES trust science - at least to some extent - unless their home IS a cave.

As for your comment, 6:52, that is the very nature of science. A hypothesis is generated and an attempt is made to prove it or disprove it. Anyone who truly believes science has all the answers is wrong and should be laughed at in my opinion. It just isn't true.

Time and time again, things we believed to be fact are proven incorrect when further information is garnered from the universe. The big point here is that science makes serious attempts to verify what is believed. Science (true, honest science) accepts change when what was believed is proven wrong.

Religions generally won't accept that concept. Ask someone like Ken Hamm, who slams science constantly because his bible has ALL the answers.

To both of you: No one I know of (admittedly a small number) is claiming that what is believed at this point for things like the Big Bang theory is any more than mathematical conjecture. It's why it is called a THEORY. For the most part, though, the math seems to work and when a piece of the puzzle doesn't work an attempt to find a piece that does work is made.

And if you, 6:52, believe responding negatively to a comment one believes to be incongruous is being "attacked", I feel you need to reexamine the meaning of discourse.

Oh, and by the way, what "respected scientists" are claiming the bang theory isn't correct? I'd be interested to follow up on that claim and see what they have to offer.
