Texas has now defunded Planned Parenthood over those doctored videos. Well of course they did.

"Government should stay out of our business. Except vaginas. Government should all up in that."
Courtesy of Time:

Texas is eliminating taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood in the state, based on concerns over the organization’s fetal tissue donations, the governor announced on Monday.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office issued a statement, saying Texas is ending Medicaid’s participation with Planned Parenthood, which means the women’s reproductive health nonprofit will no longer receive Medicaid funding in the state. The decision came in a letter sent Monday by the Office of Inspector General at Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Abbott’s statement said.

“Following the release of gruesome videos filmed at Planned Parenthood facilities, including Gulf Coast in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced his LIFE Initiative to provide greater protections for children in the womb and prevent the sale of baby body parts,” Abbott’s statement reads.

The cancellation “calls for funding to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers out of taxpayer money to be eliminated completely, both at the State and local levels,” according to the announcement.

Abbott said that canceling Medicaid participation for Planned Parenthood in Texas moves the state closer to “providing greater access to safe healthcare for women while protecting our most vulnerable – the unborn.”

Of course neither those last two statements are accurate as health clinics for women in Texas are rapidly disappearing and without access to safe legal abortion services women will resort to the same back alley butchers that performed them BEFORE Roe vs Wade.

By the way let's remember that Planned Parenthood has already said that they will no longer charge for the shipping of fetal tissue, and not only that Texas Planned Parenthood NEVER participated in fetal tissue donations.

So this defunding does NOTHING to address the concerns brought up by those bullshit videos, but instead puts the health of Texas women at serious risk and gives Governor Greg Abbott another victory against women's rights.

Hey, I tried to get y'all to vote for Wendy Davis. But did you listen? Hell no!

Update: Well guess who felt the need to chime in on this story?

None other than Nancy French wearing her Bristol Palin skin suit:

There is no reason that an organization that has proven itself so untrustworthy and that has based its business around the murder of innocent babies should be receiving tax-payer dollars. Yet, Planned Parenthood has rallied its friends in the media, in Hollywood and in the White House to try to deflect our attention from the truth.

It is so refreshing to see state’s standing up for life and refusing to be bullied by Planned Parenthood and all of their allies! I hope that my state follows suit soon!

Well I assume that when French says "my state" she is referring to Tennessee where she and her husband actually live, because now that Alaska dumped Sean Parnell there is no way we are doing anything this fucking stupid.

I assume at some point today Palin will link to this Brancy post and the trifecta of ignorance will be complete.

O/T but…I knew there was a reason that conservatives were all for drug testing. It's rife with fraud and a way for their friends to make money.

Hey, Nancy, I know you;re writing as the functionally illiterate Bristol, but 'state's' as a plural? Seriously? Or are you just as stupid as the family that pays your bills?
And Texas? When is the lying going to be enough? Your Governor hates women...why do you not care?

There is a revelation of truth by the choice of words "refusing to be bullied" which is what the likes of the Palin's and evidently Nancy French do. When bullies do not get their way they lie, launch smear campaigns such as launch bogus videos.

They included a kernel of truth that they do not want any funding going to PP because of the abortion services. However they seek and bully people to believe PP only performs abortions and now that they coerce women to abort so they can sell "body parts" as in murder for profit.

I believe people have the right to be opposed to PP because they are vehemently opposed to abortion. The lies to "bully" manipulate people is unacceptable. As Joe Biden says you are entitled to your opinion but not entitled to make up facts.

  7. I support Planned Parenthood.

I support the right of every woman to make her personal decisions about her personal choices regarding her health.

I support keeping abortions "Safe, Legal, and Rare".

I support running Abbott's wheelchair into the Gulf of Mexico with him in it.

Slightly OT, but I have not read much about Sarah Palin's appearance at the Utah Pregnancy Crisis Center this month. Was it that terrible? I'm sure it was. They were probably so embarrassed that you cannot even find any video footage of her screech there. I guess her time is seriously up. She's done, toast, stick a fork in her, auf wiedersehen baby!

Wait a minute, words condemning abortion are being attributed to Nancy/Bristol. Any connection to the Bristol who get getting rounder and rounder and ROUNDER as she performed on "Dancing with the Stars"? Who then dropped out of sight for a few eeks and re-emerged suddenly svelte? THAT Bristol?

Tom, in FL, where our legislators are also trying to bring back black-market abortions. It could be the next growth industry!

For fuck's sake, can we just "secede" Texas once and for all!

I didn't vote for Abbott and I think he is an absolute lunatic, appealing to the other loonies in the state. I read he was Perry on steroids before the election and he is so much worse than Rick Perry ever was. Texas chose a real weirdo. I think he has a God complex big time.

is there any even tiny possibility of getting a Dem governor or legislature back? If so, we should really, really, be organizing there. Texas has far too much influence nationally.

You would have your work cut out for you. One of the biggest problems here is that people don't vote. We have low voter turnouts even for the governor's office. I wish minorities were more motivated to vote, but of course, Texas has tried very hard to keep women and minorities from voting. It should be tried though. I think it is possible, but it is going to take awhile. It would be worth the effort though. The large cities vote blue, but the suburbs and rural areas are red. It is hard to fright the right wing media that they listen to and take as the gospel truth. No matter what proof you give them, they still choose to believe the lies of Limbaugh and Fox and all other right leaning outlets. How do we fix stupidity?

You know there will be deaths as a result of this decision, either by pregnancy complications, botched illegal abortions, or cancer that was not detected in time.

I sincerely hope that every family of every woman who dies or is permanently harmed by this decision sues the crap out of the state. Clearly, they place no value on the lives or rights of women, but they DO value their money, so perhaps losing a nice big chunk of it will make them reevaluate their choices.

A Federal Judge Just Gave an Epic Defense of Planned Parenthood That Everyone Should Read

In a blistering opinion, a federal judge blocked Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's attempt to defund Planned Parenthood in the state, saying the move would cause "irreparable harm" to the 5,200 women who depend on the organization for health care.

In July, Jindal ordered an investigation into the group following the release of a series of highly edited videos that show Planned Parenthood officials discussing fetal tissue donation. He also ordered the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) to cancel Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast's (PPGC) Medicaid contract, which it did in August, effectively defunding the organization in the state. Neither of the two Planned Parenthood clinics in Louisiana offer abortions. Planned Parenthood took the DHH to court later that month.

US District Judge John W. deGravelles issued a restraining order against the DHH's move late Sunday. The order will remain in place for at least two weeks while the judge makes a final ruling on the case. However, in his opinion, deGravelles was outspoken in his support of Planned Parenthood. He wrote that the DHH attack on the organization was baseless:

The uncontradicted evidence in the record at this time is that PPGC does not perform abortions in Louisiana, is not involved in the sale of fetal tissue and none of the conduct in question occurred at the PPGC's two Louisiana facilities. Based on the record before it, it appears likely that Plaintiff will be able to prove that the attempted termination against it are motived and driven, at least in large part, by reasons unrelated to its competence and unique to it.

He also disputed a common Republican argument (which former Mother Jones reporter Molly Redden debunked last month) that closing Planned Parenthood won't burden its patients, who would have access to other reproductive health providers in the area. According to deGravelles, defunding Planned Parenthood would leave thousands of women without options:

Is it legal for that asshole to defund PP in Texas? Medicaid is funded by the federal government, and the federal government has not defunded PP.

Time for PP to sue any and all states that choose to follow this route. And have their court expenses paid by the states AND the governors.

I hate to disagree, but PP does make money without the government getting involved. I really don't see them going anywhere. They'll still be available for abortions, and all that.

Planned Parenthood is a non-profit, meaning that all "profits" (by and large donations) must be plowed back into PP to provide services. For services provided (excluding abortion) PP is re-imbursed by the Fed gov't. Thus PP receives funding on a services rendered basis.

I'd like to see Cecille Richards and this asshat go at it. Women are not "toys" for men, nor men's "property", as long as Roe V Wade is the law of the land, the women of Texas deserve health services. They should put their tax monies in escrow accounts payable when PP gets it's share of funding.
I'm sure women in Texas know how to throw shade on their partners. Nothing more insulting to a man than being stuck in a sexless marriage with a cold shoulder to lean on.

I made a big donation today after reading this and I bet a lot of others did too. Texas has done itself harm here. Smart women and moms all over the state will be considering moving to a less benighted state. If I had a young daughter, I wouldn't want her growing up in a state that tried to kill Planned Parenthood.
