Virginia Republican flyer touts "Christian heritage." Yeah who needs that whole "separation of church and state" rule anyhow?

Courtesy of the News Leader:

An ad by the Augusta County Republican Committee touting the need to "Preserve our Christian Heritage" was created to be a reflection of the party's creed, officials say.

Larry Roller, 87, created the political flier that says, "Preserve our Christian Heritage! VOTE REPUBLICAN" on Nov. 3. The ad ran as an insert in The News Leader Thursday.

"God is a foundation of our nation," said Roller, of Mount Sidney, who is on the GOP committee. "If you read the histories of our founding fathers, (they say) you should not run for office if you are not a Christian."

The News Leader goes on to point out that in Article VI of the Constitution it states that there will be no religious test for those seeking to hold office in the United States.

This Larry Roller guy, who believe it or not is a former teacher, does not let that change his point of view however:

"They have taken the Ten Commandments out of public places, along with the Pledge of Allegiance and daily prayer out of the schools," he said. "They seem to forget the very first thing they did before writing the Constitution was pray for 3 1/2 hours."

Doesn't this sound suspiciously like the same ideals embraced by white supremacist groups?

Has an answer for that as well:

Roller said he was aware of supremacy groups using the idea of preserving a Christian heritage when designing the GOP flier, but "just because some people have misused the words does not mean there is anything wrong with using 'Christian heritage.'"

Actually yes, there is.

It essentially excludes every other religious group in the country and suggests that by virtue of their faith, or lack of faith, that they are unfit to serve this nation.

That is antithetical to the values embraced by the Founding Fathers, or espoused in the documents that they created.

However it certainly reflects the thinking, and prejudices, of the Republican party as we know it today.  Doesn't it?

God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

If it's gonna come down to a choice between "Christians" or America the free, I'm gonna have to be anti-"Christian".

I grew up and went to college in the Shenandoah Valley prior to moving to AK and my hero was the Viriginia man who was an Atheist fighting for having ATHEIST on his VA license plate. (his last name was Via, can't remember his first name) He ended up losing his battle (I wish I could remember his full name but this was 30 years ago) but he put up a great fight, but in the end the christianists won, but really, there were as many of us as there were them, especially in college towns. Now I live in a town in AK that is full up with a bunch of stupid christians that spend most of their time smelling their own farts, but these days it seems that the world is rotten with these types and we just have to wait for this new generation to come of age and all this stupid shit will go by the wayside. I just smile and laugh and shake my head when they start spouting their fairy tales and let them know that I feel very sorry for them. While I do feel very sorry for them I also remind them that next time they come down my 1/2 mile driveway to my door with their fucking bibles and little kids in tow they might find my shotgun barrels looking them in the eye. (I have 3 no trespassing signs, two no soliciting signs and one no prostelytizing sign in that 1/2 mile, so they can never say they weren't properly warned.)

Greetings, fellow Shenandoah Valley survivor! I escaped too, but not so far away as Alaska... If memory doesn't deceive me, the guy's name was Arnold Via(?). The rather ridiculous argument the state hid behind was that plates with 'religious' opinions might offend, therefore no 'Atheist' for you! Of course, now you swing a cat without seeing a religious plate. GODNME, BLESSED, PRZLORD are all in my neighborhood. How times have changed.

Give the moron a break, an 87 year old man repeating the lies he's been taught his entire life. My dad never forgot the grilling JFK got about his religion affecting his decisions as President, but this was before the Jesus freak Born Agains began shoving their crap down our throats.

    1. If Christians really believed in what they endlessingly spout, they wouldn't care if anybody else did or not.

Jacqueline Kennedy once said "I don't know why everyone's so upset that Jack's a Catholic; he's not a very good one."

People who insist the United States is a "Christian nation" don't really understand the concept of freedom.

Is CSIS far behind these folks? Our Founding Fathers must be having nightmares in their graves. I wish they'd haunt these numbskulls and the politicians who pander to them.
