Yesterday President Obama visited Oregon to meet with the survivors and family of the victims of that shooting last week. And yes there were protesters.

Courtesy of CNN:

A week after a gunman killed nine people and himself at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, President Barack Obama met with survivors and grieving families behind closed doors on Friday.

"There are gonna be moments as we go forward where we're gonna have to come together and figure out how do we stop things like this from happening," Obama said in brief remarks after meeting with families. "I've got very strong feelings about this because when you talk to the families you are reminded this could be your child ... or your mom or your dad or your relative or your friend."

Even before the President set foot in Oregon on Friday, news broke of two other campus shootings — leaving one dead and three wounded at Northern Arizona University, as well as one dead in an apartment complex near Texas Southern University.

This was the President's attempt to express his sorrow at these seemingly constant tragedies and to reinforce his commitment to getting something done about it.

So as you might imagine the Ammosexuals responded aggressively:

Gun-toting protesters gathered on Friday morning to await President Obama's arrival in Roseburg, Ore., where he planned to meet with the families of victims of last week's mass shooting at Umpqua Community College.

But local residents planned to protest Obama's visit, saying he rushed to "politicize" the tragedy by pushing a gun control agenda.

"My family, my friends, everybody down here is not happy about him coming," Michelle Finn, a Umpqua alumna and Roseburg native, told the Oregonian. "He already says he's going to politicize this — he's already going to push his agenda."

Yes he is going to politicize this because it is through politics that gun laws are beefed up.

We had three different shootings on three different college campuses yesterday, leaving nine injured and two dead. And yet people are blaming everything except the easy access to firearms.

At this point there does not seem to be any middle ground for reasoning with these people.

Update: It looks like Obama is considering doing something on his own about background checks, without involving the Republicans.

Hell why not? It's not like they could hate him any more.

    Your two sentences are perfect.

And in that spirit, I hope the President gets a lot done between now and Nov. 2016, including releasing Leonard Peltier, the premier U.S. political prisoner.

Maybe all convicted murderers should just claim to be political prisoners. He murdered in cold blood. He can die in his cell, a jailed useless man.

  3. Roseburg is chock full of knuckle dragging, pot bellied, red neck inbreds. That includes their sheriff. John Hanlin.
On the flip side, there are plenty more here that are kind, caring.
The protesters were not even smart enough to understand that the college was NOT a gun free zone.
Check the coverage photos and see for yourself.

See this article in New York Times.

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/10/09/nyregion/gun-laws-oregon-new-york-city.html

Douglas County Oregon (contains Roseburg) has 12,419 active concealed handgun license holders with a total population around 107,000.

New York City has nearly 4,000 licensed to carry a gun, with over 37,000 total licensed to own a gun.

I live in Southern Oregon in the liberal end of the Rogue Valley. Sometimes I listen to a local right-wing radio talk programl (when NPR has a boring subject) mainly to hear occasional interview with local politicians and personalities. Of course 99% of callers are hysterically pro-gun and it seems like the whole point of their lives is dedicated to the fear that someone (Obama) will take their guns away.

Curious about what that station's website would reflect on the day of Obama's visit, I was shocked to see the host (of the local a.m. talk program) say that....it was a good thing that Obama landed in Eugene and not Medford, because if he had there would be about a thousand people spitting over the fence onto the tarmac.

This is a wonderful place and Roseburg is beautiful (and I know they have a contingent of sane people there), but when I hear from that rather large fringe, their rabidity is really alarming. I am cautious to venture out much to them hollers outside our "enclave".

It took me two hours to get my hands on an AK-47 — welcome to America

It’s not hard to get your hands on illegal guns and rifles in America. It took me about two hours. I called a guy from the old neighborhood in LA, said something about a “piece”, and, hours later, I was staring at an AK-47 and an illegally modified AR-15, which were sitting on a kitchen table. Welcome to America.

Admittedly, he was surprised at my interest in being strapped since it’s been a good minute since I was about the life, but when I explained I was simply curious to see how long it’d take for me to get a gat, he agreed to the idea. He had some handguns, too, he said, although I didn’t see ‘em. I took his word for it after seeing the AK-47 and AR-15, because those weapons leave an impression.

Some of the weapons were smuggled in, while others were bought on the up and up – waiting period and all. Moving them is not his thing; he collects, and, on occasion, heads out to the desert with others to shoot. If I needed something, we could talk to another homie and with a few hundred dollars out of pocket, I’d be set. I passed on the opportunity.

I didn’t expect my search to be so successful – especially since the black market usually requires some know-how, something I don’t have much of these days, since, well, I’ve done a complete 180, and I rarely spend any time even associating with people running afoul of the law. But it was shockingly easy.

Oregon shooter spared one person to send police a message

..."He looked directly at me and said, 'Hey, kid with the glasses. You are the lucky one; I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops,' " Downing said in his statement.

Before giving Downing the envelope, which had a flash drive in it, Harper-Mercer pointed a gun directly at him, making him think for a moment that he was about to die.

Conservative commentator Ed Berliner tore into Second Amendment extremists and parents of mass shooters in a rant posted to Newsmax on Thursday.

Berliner went off on the parents of Oregon shooter Chris Harper Mercer, Newtown shooter Adam Lanza and of the 11-year-old boy who killed an 8-year-old girl in Tennessee this week after a dispute over puppies.

“Time also to put to bed this Second Amendment absolute right,” he said. “Make it a privilege, not an absolute right of DNA passage. Force gun owners to undergo intrusive background checks including mental health exams. Take required gun safety courses. Renew them every year.”

He added that adults should be held criminally responsible for failing to lock up weapons and keep them away from children.

“Be responsible, and pay the price when your actions are the reason an 8-year-old kid gets blow away,” he said. “And as a gun owner I tell you what. I’ll volunteer. I’ll be the first in line.”

What is more important, he inquired, words on a piece of paper that can be changed, referring to gun legislation, or the death certificate that gets handed to the victims of gun violence.

All I know is that I'm more than happy I voted for him BOTH times and that I'll enjoy casting my vote for Hillary Clinton!
