Terror comes to the City of Lights. Update!

Courtesy of CNN:

ISIS claimed responsibility for gunfire and blasts that targeted six sites Friday night in Paris, killing 128 people in one of Europe's deadliest massacres in recent years.

In an online statement distributed by supporters Saturday, the terror group said eight militants wearing explosive belts and armed with machine guns attacked precisely selected areas in the French capital.

In addition to the people killed, 180 others were injured, according to the Paris Police Prefecture. More than half of them are in critical condition.

I am sure that all of you watched this unfold last night just like I did.

And I am sure you share my shock, anger, and disgust.

My daughter was attending the wedding of a good friend last night, but even during the ceremony she kept sending me texts asking what was going on. I told her what I knew from watching cable news, and she kept responding back with more and more horror, until she finally had had enough and stopped responding at all.

Still today there are conflicting reports on just now many people were murdered last night, some say 127 others put the death toll over 150.

What we do know is that innocent people simply living their lives were massacred by savages in the name of their religion. And that should frighten us all.

I know as a liberal I am supposed to understand the motivations of the oppressed, or to feel sympathy for those who are so desperate that they would lash out in such a manner, but to be honest I feel none of that right now.

All I feel is incredible anger.

I don't care what your holy book says you should do. I don't care how angry you are at the West. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care.

And if this act of savagery was supposed to make us care, or to frighten us, I don't think these Jihadists understand the people of France, or the people of the United States, very well at all.

Somehow I think that ISIS might have just made a terrible mistake indeed.

Update: Here are the President's remarks on the attack. And of course we will hear what the future President has to say about them at tonight's Democratic debate.

First it was shock, then absolute anger at what was unfolding on the News last night. Those murderers are devils, wrapped up in a false sense of religion. They have murder on their minds, revenge so deep, and love to make others feel helpless. Most knew they would likely have to die as well, but cowardly feel the need to take down as many as possible.

It's the same spirit that affects the gunmen who go into schools and churches and malls and try to take out as many as possible. It's what the bible calls 'sin'.

And when the religious go into public buildings to take out as many as possible would be closer to the truth.

We came home from a magical, beautiful month in Paris on October 20. We are simply devastated by last night's mayhem. Many of the streets mentioned in news reports were ones we walked on our way here and there, although our apartment was in a completely different part of town.

There is something so cowardly about terrorism and especially about terrorists who are afraid of having to face their victims and accusers after the act.

I am sure that we will return to Paris if our health remains well. We have good friends there and in other parts of France. Just days before we came home, I said that I'd love to spend a week in Paris sometime in December - to get a feel for the holiday season in the shops, churches and restaurants and still have time, once back home, to get ready for our family Christmas. I still want to do that. Maybe even mores, contrarian that I can be.

Hillary Clinton responded to the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris by saying, “No terrorist attack will ever dim the spirit of the French people or our common commitment to the democratic values we share.”

In a statement, the Democratic frontrunner said, “All our prayers are with the people of France tonight. We must stand side-by-side every step of the way with France and our allies around the world to wage and win the struggle against terrorism and violent extremism. Even in this darkest night, Paris remains the City of Light. No terrorist attack will ever dim the spirit of the French people or our common commitment to the democratic values we share.”

I know I'm gonna take a lot of flack for this but I don't care. I hope President Obama reconsiders letting 10,000 refugees into this country. We have no idea if those refugees are really from ISIS and no amount of background checking can confirm that. I've read about how those refugees have been a nuisance in Denmark and Germany, when they arrived they got on trains and refused to get off, were very demanding, and were rude. If they want to live in Germany, Denmark etc fine but at least be respectful to the other citizens who were born, raised, and lived there their entire lives and quit demanding everyone kowtow to them. Rant over.

Considering that they are fleeing worse things than have happened in the West, I am inclined to be sympathetic. I think there also comes a point where one gets tired, tired of the nightmare, tired of seeing what it is doing to one's family, which would explain the behaviour you find so deplorable.
There very well may be moles hidden among the refugees, but that is hardly their fault.
We are not in their shoes. I am inclined to view and treat the refugees with compassion. We can and should take in more than we have offered to do so far.

  9. Many early comments on HuffPo have focused on laying blame on Bush, Blair, or Obama. What a pointless waste of time that changes nothing.

The real question is what is the resolve of the free world to address these continuing threats? If the west pulls out of the middle East will all be well? Or will they continue to exert their influence worldwide? My guess is leaving well-enough alone won't placate them.

To date I think the responses of free nations have been tepid. A little bombing here and there, a targeted drone strike, etc. Hardly a full-court press. If we have the capability of spotting Jihad John from the air, we have the capability of targeting every square inch of land these guys step on. How the hell do they have parades of white Toyota pickups without any sort of intervention? How do they obtain oil without their supplies and transportation being blown to hell? How do they move money in the international banking system? There's an intricate infrastructure that supports these people than can and should be destroyed.

I tend not to be conspiratorial, but I am not convinced these folks have upset the apple cart enough to the generate the kind of reaction free nations are capable of. All nations who are threatened by these groups (yes, even some who are enemies) need to work together to create elite squads whose mission it is is to listen, investigate, infiltrate, and destroy.

Terrorists are not super-human. They can and should be made to feel fearful.

Sorry, Little Rabbit, but there are two things you are assuming that are grossly incorrect.

First? I am NOT christian. Nor am I even a religious person. So your basic answer is NONE.

Second, and to add further information contrary to your assumption, my people didn't show up here until LONG after your people were murdered. (and yes, I agree what was done was murder.)

And why are you attacking ME? What have I said that makes you believe I am biased against you or any other person? Not only have I not said anything which could be construed in that direction, I am trying to speak with a certain amount of reason in FAVOR of the refugees you seem to think I am against.

If you don't like the fact I am exposing a lie about a facet of history, that is not MY fault - nor my concern.

I despise religion - at least organized religion. I, like many here at this blog, feel it is the root cause of most of the world's problems. So do me a favor and don't throw the label christian at me. It won't stick.

Looking at this from a wider perspective, we can easily find a long 100 year plus history of the USA, England, and France starting wars, propping up dictators (Shah of Iran) and co-locating industry in Muslim countries.

We would also have to take into account the history of the USA advocating for Israel, and the sad history of innocents slaughtered on all sides, but we can't forget those among the Palestinian territories, and the great suffering of many Muslims maimed and killed thereby.

When W Bush invaded Iraq, and overthrew Saddam Hussein, the entire power balance of the area was disrupted, and we are now reaping the most recent fallout, as you said.

When you factor in the religious and cultural differences between Western culture, and radical Islam, the results are almost inevitable, which we saw on the 13th.

These Paris terrorists are religious fanatics, and like all such people, regardless of which god or prophet they follow, no amount of reason, logic, or regard for humanity will make any difference to them.

Sadly, here in the U.S., there is not a single republican presidential candidate who, if not by direct words then certainly by policy, does not want to turn our country into a theocracy. Though they use different tactics than what we saw in Paris, their goal is the same. And, these republicans use hate and ignorance to advance their mission.

Just because Christianity is a more familiar religion in our country does not make the people who want to rule by the Bible any less dangerous.

There have been innumerable examples of mainstream politicians in the GOP who have proclaimed their intentions to force every American citizen to follow the precepts of Christianity, regardless of their personal beliefs. Unfortunately, those politicians pick and choose WHICH parts of the Bible they want to follow, and it's never the parts about loving, caring for and accepting their fellow human.

Those same Bible-thumping politicians are the first to advocate discrimination, gun proliferation, expansion of war, elimination of women's and minorities' rights, and economic policies that hurt the most vulnerable.

They may not make the evening news through violent bloodshed, but their control of our economy and government can hurt far more people than a terrorist attack in a single city, as despicable as that is.

Terrorism is not bravery but cowardice and ignorance whether it's the lone shooter who enters a church during a service and kills most of the participants or heavily armed thugs who use suicide bombs and machine guns to shoot randomly into restaurants or to attack rock concert goers.

Bombing countries into oblivion won't solve any problems. The GOP knows this but will persist in the "tough" guy facade because they sell fear, just as the terrorists do. I think this 21st century phase of lunacy will eventually play itself out. In the meantime, our governments have to be wise and careful in their hunt for the perpetrators. If you knew ANYTHING about the 3 Abrahamic religions, you would recognize that all three have the same teachings of hatred toward the other 2.

Islam is no better or worse than the other two. It is the fanaticism of a small group of muslims doing the damage. Even their highest Imams speak against what they are doing, repeatedly saying what they are doing is grossly against Islam.

And if you wait long enough, you will see even more acts of hatred coming from the christian taliban here in the US. They already are violent, just not as widespread. They perform acts of terrorism as well. What's the difference between the extremist followers of Islam and the extremist followers of christian fundamentalism?Murder is murder. Period. It doesn't matter what the "reason" for the murder is.

In one case they want total domination NOW. In the other, they murder to stop someone performing abortions (so far).

Eventually it may be recognized by all that fanaticism for ANY reason is dangerous.

And your open, uneducated hatred of Islam only adds fuel to the fire.

I am tired of this nonsense just like everyone else. I do think it is horribly rude to be using a cell phone during a wedding ceremony, regardless of the reason. Shame on your daughter for being so disrespectful.

    9. Just to clear a few things up there were members of the wedding party with friends and relatives in Paris.

My daughter was by no means the ONLY person checking their phones, and even before the reception was over some gathered in a room with a TV to watch the coverage of the attack.

This was not just a case of somebody checking their Facebook page or e-mails, this was a massive attack on human beings and other human beings felt pain on their behalf and concern for their safety.

      saw this today:

For former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a renewed focus on terrorism is equal parts peril and opportunity — given his brother’s painful history in Iraq. In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, Bush, who despite his lack of direct experience has sought to portray himself as the GOP field’s grown-up on national security, called the battle against extremists "the war of our time" and said the U.S. needs to show global leadership.

"We need to re-garner the alliances, fortify those alliances, reconnect with our counterintelligence and intelligence capabilities with our European allies, and engage in the Middle East to take out ISIS, which is the wellspring, and more likely to be the wellspring of this type of activity," Bush said. "If it’s not them, there are other terrorist groups."

Guess who wants people to believe they have a son in Iraq, fighting for our freedoms!

This explains why the rumor about Track Palin would be important for Sarah to tell her Earthquake Movement. They say Track is currently fighting in Iraq. Think how relevant Sarah (send her money) would be with a son in combat in a key place? She use to do that thing like Track was her go to warrior for expert advice about the Mid East. He would look things up like the Statue of Liberty for his tattoo. Now she has him back to Iraq for the donors, Earthquake Movement and Cons4Pee.

I am shocked it is not illegal when Sarah or her team deceive anyone like she does.

Now there is talk about World War III. It continues to be acceptable for fake stories about the son of someone that claims to be a politician. Because she was once picked as a running mate for senile McCain.

I have a 'friend' on Facebook who is a very devout Catholic, extremely conservative woman who went to school with me many years ago. This afternoon she posted something about the tragedy in Paris, complaining about liberals who have supported "Obama and his Muslim sensitivity tolerance" and warning that the same thing will happen here if we allow Muslim refugees to enter this country. At first I just I deleted the post, but then decided that the post, and several of the like-minded comments that followed, needed a 'liberal' response. Here's what I wrote:

"One of the most shameful events in our country's history was when the Japanese were rounded up and placed in internment camps during WWII. Although many of them were American citizens, many others were recent immigrants fleeing from the danger in their homeland, much like the refugees of today. They were imprisoned because they happened to be from the same country that we were fighting and were assumed to be enemies, even though they had done nothing to warrant their fate. I'm sure there were a small number of spies and saboteurs mixed among them, but we should never repeat the mistake of branding all people of a nationality - or religion - as enemies, instead of the small number of extremists who twist their religion to justify their hate and violence."

I doubt it will have much effect on the people in her circle, but I feel better about myself after writing it. I expect that my comment will receive some angry responses from the 'Christians' who feel as she does, but I will read their comments out of curiosity...before permanently removing her from my news feed.

"This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of France need to respond. France is our oldest ally. The French people have stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States time and again. And we want to be very clear that we stand together with them in the fight against terrorism and extremism. Paris itself represents the timeless values of human progress. Those who think that they can terrorize the people of France or the values that they stand for are wrong. The American people draw strength from the French people’s commitment to life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. We are reminded in this time of tragedy that the bonds of liberté and égalité and fraternité are not only values that the French people care so deeply about, but they are values that we share. And those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening. We’re going to do whatever it takes to work with the French people and with nations around the world to bring these terrorists to justice, and to go after any terrorist networks that go after our people." —President Obama on the attacks in Paris

The President Of Iran Shows More Class Than GOPers, Joins Muslims Supporting France (IMAGES)

...As the typical American conservative responds to the attacks with death wishes for all Muslims, impeachment dreams for President Obama and a call for easing gun restrictions, Muslims from around the globe joined in the flood of prayers and support for the French people in their time of need. Proving that even Iranians can be classier than our own neocon nutbags, President Rhouhanni of Iran sent this message to France:

In the name of the Iranian people, who have themselves been victims of terrorism, I strongly condemn these crimes against humanity and offer my condolences to the grieving French people and government.

Rhouhanni wasn’t the only Muslim leader to condemn the attacks. Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo called for International cooperation to fight terrorism. The leaders of Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia called the attacks “heinous” and “criminal” and called for an end to the “plague” of terrorism.

2:30, at least 2:06 provides a link to the logical assumption. You provide nothing but derision. History has long recognized the links between the past actions and the events of the future.

Where is the connection for Clinton - at least in your mind - being responsible for 9/11? Link?

Bush IS responsible for the great mess in the Middle East we are currently seeing. And he definitely is responsible for the deaths in the Twin Towers! His inaction about the intelligence reports given him in plenty of time makes that true.

Dubya was an idiot who listened to assholes like Chaney and that allowed the deaths on 9/11. He is also responsible for ignoring economic predictions (proven quite solid by actual events after he was informed) and thereby bringing about a world economic collapse through lousy mortgage practices. That, by the way, was what he was warned about FIVE YEARS before the collapse.

Dubya was an ignorant piece of garbage who should be charged and tried for all sorts of crimes. Get over it. He was far worse than Reagan ever was, though that's a hard thing to do.

We went to a diner today during a break from shopping, and this morbidly obese man and his disheveled equally ugly wife and offspring, as the reports came in on tv, laughed and ordered "Freedom Toast" and "Freedom Fries". I had to physically restrain my husband from punching the shit out of him, but someone else wasn't quick enough. The entire place stood and clapped when management kicked them out.

  41. 2:30 PM: You know what administration I blame for 9/11 and everything there after? The first one to establish a military presence in the middle East. What we are facing today is the result of decades of an incoherent foreign policy that failed to understand history and to interpret and predict events. Bush will never escape the bogus WMD story, but the real reason liberals despise Bush is because he and his team were so deluded by the idea of American exceptionalism. They really believed the U.S. would be welcomed. Hard to imagine, but there are those who don't envy us. They like things, but they don't like our beliefs, our philosophies, and they don't want to be us.

Attempting to address extremism is going to take a lot more than the usual patriotic cliches and propaganda. It's going to take a policy that understands this extremism and then develops policies and actions far more insidious than ISIS itself.
