In response to Ted Cruz ad featuring his children, a Washington Post cartoon depicts them as trained monkeys. Uh oh..

Apparently the original was animated.
Courtesy of the New York Post:

The Washington Post removed an editorial cartoon from its website late Tuesday that depicted Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz’s young daughters as trained monkeys.

As of midnight Wednesday, the webpage where the cartoon by Ann Telnaes had been shown was replaced by a note from the Post’s editorial page editor, Fred Hiatt.

“It’s generally been the policy of our editorial section to leave children out of it,” Hiatt wrote. “I failed to look at this cartoon before it was published. I understand why Ann thought an exception to the policy was warranted in this case, but I do not agree.”

The cartoon of course was in response to this ad by Cruz campaign.

As a rule of course children are off limits, unless like Palin's children they also pimp themselves out to make money off of their name.

However in this case it seems that Cruz dragged his children out onto the front line, and essentially that means they could now get hit by errant pieces of political shrapnel.

But of course the worst part of all of this is that it allowed Cruz to play the victim.
So I think for that reason alone this was a bad call for the Washington Post cartoonist.

Is anybody else having a Palin flashback here?

As soon as those little girls entered the octagon, they became enemy combatants. The WaPo cartoonist exercised considerable restraint in his/her attack on Ted Cruz ... Important. Point. The cartoonist was attacking Ted Cruz and his lack of judgement in using his kids. Not attacking the kids.

    1. I agree 100%. He brought them into the battle, wrote them into the script with dialogue and very specific parts to play.
Their characterization as monkeys are wholly due to how HE utilized them, not how Wapo viewed them. Fuck Cruz, hard !!

Umm, what the fuck was that? Ted Cruz always turns my stomach, but making his poor kids participate in his propaganda is a new low. It was a poor choice to portray his kids as trained monkeys, but it's also sadly accurate! How desperate do you have to be to use your children in this way? Gross.

President Obama (2008): "Children are off limits."

Ted has not pulled any of his children out of school to join him on the campaign trail or peddle books. He has never used any of his children to attack a constituent. Neither of his daughters has attacked/falsely accused an innocent adult.

Ah, but the older one was reading from the propaganda book attacking Hillary, actually. Did you watch? I feel sorry for those girls. Their robotic mother is an adult, but these girls are being brainwashed into Cruz' hateful world view. When is it acceptable to have your young kids mock our leaders in a commercial? What are you teaching them? Certainly not any kind of respect for adults. And yes, the girls have been along on the trail at times.

Bad call for the Post, but also for Cruz. It's almost like he put his children out there as bait.

By the way, how many times have the Pres or First lady been depicted as monkeys? And with a very different meaning as the Cruz cartoon.

I'm getting so sick and tired of what politics is becoming.

Exactly...when did Breitbart ever pull a disgusting cartoon? Or WaPO for that matter. This President has been putting up with slurs, lies, threats, and the worst hatred I have ever seen expressed for seven years now. Poor Teddy puts his girls on display as bigots, and then gets to claim victim? How typical.

Even if Cruz shouldn't have used his daughters in a political ad like this, it is still a good policy not to go after the girls. Unlike Bristol and Willow, Caroline and Catherine are small children. Willow and Bristol were (I believe,) 14 and 17 when Sarah was nominated. The teen years are old enough for people to understand political issues and be held accountable for what they say and do.

And whatever we can say about Ted Cruz, there is no reason to think any of his children will be as messed up as Bristol or Track Palin. Honestly, I couldn't take another Palin-level dysfunctional family on a Republican ticket. I almost called up the McCain campaign in 2007 to say that they should select someone else (due to Bristol's unmarried motherhood situation, which I found embarrassing as it made the party look hypocritical.) I decided not to because McCain at least selected a "movement conservative" and I didn't want to hear a reply to the effect of "now you have another complaint? Now I wish I had called.

There is every reason to think his kids will be 'messed up.' Their father is as big a narcissist as Palin, and truly believe God wants him to turn the USA into his own special version of a theocracy. He is not a nice person. He uses others to get what he wants. His family is on the ACA now (hypocrite!) because his wife took a leave from Goldman-Sachs, you know, WALL STREET!! Yes, these girls will be messed up. They may actually go to college, but they will most likely never be permitted to think for themselves. I have nephews who were forced to attend private Christian schools. Their proms were staid little dinners. They never dated. They were sent to a private Christian college, all four of them, when they wanted to at least explore public education. The two that have married married in their 30's. One other is a drunk who never completed college, and the youngest teaches...public school because it was the only job he could get to afford an apartment. He is also the only one who moved more than 10 miles from home. These are smart boys, but totally under the control of their parents' religion.

@6:38, doesn't matter when they said what. Unless they are adults, candidates' kids should not be used in ads. No questions to them that require a response other than "I love my parent" or other innocuities should be asked of them AFTER an election. No wonder I keep reading how everyone hates that man. The way he used his daughters in that commercial was sickening. He put words in their mouth. They aren't old enough to understand what they said. Seems to me that cartoon was pretty accurate -- but, running it was sinking to his own low level. Some other way to illustrate how he was the one using his children might have been better and less controversial. He deserves to be slammed for that -- just in another way. He is as low as they come. But, then we have Trump to consider? Such an abundance of lowest of the low in that party.

That's hard to determine considering the field of televangelists and other snake-oil salesmen (politicians) inhabiting our world. Even so, his level of low is way down there, so it could possibly be used as a rule-of-thumb determinant.

I respectfully disagree. As much as I thoroughly DESPISE Ted Cruz, I think the Post was right to take the cartoon down.

His awkward video with his family was wierd and his choice. I agree. I kind of liked the response parody video that showed him and the kids reading political parody "Christmas stories" together. To use the family video in the parody is fine, but when they started dubbing voices for the girls in saying dumb things that was not right. And the girls as dancing monkeys - really? That's tacky.

Of course Cruz is totally manipulative in that he is now repeating the offending items to fund raise and as you say Gryphen it allows him to be the victim and milk that angle -- the Post should have known that would play right into his hands on that.

Just as Obama and Carter and Clinton and W all asked for their underage kids to be left alone, even if the stupid GOP candidates take the low road the press/we should not stoop to that level too.

They know full well that using their children will result in someone lampooning or denigrating them and that plays right into their hand. The "victim card" is always good for lots of free publicity ya know, and really if these parents gave two shits about their children they'd never put the into that position in the first place.

When Sarah Palin was Governor of Alaska, she dragged little Piper along with her, almost as if Piper was her protective shield. (And I loved the story about Piper being the only person who would pray with Sarah before her debate with Joe Biden). Piper was a prop then, and Sarah dragged "newborn Trig" around with her, too when she was governor. Governors don't drag their kids with them on official business. The kids show up for lighting the Christmas tree or cutting a ribbon someplace. So, Sarah has used her kids as props for a while. Trig was a natural. No one could attack her for bringing him along because, you know, DS.

If it was some family ad with him and his daughters trying to convince the world he's some wonderful family man and the press said shit about the girls, I'd be on Rafael's side on this one. But that's not what happened.

It would be like Rafael's young daughters appearing in an ad, saying stuff they don't understand like, "My dad would be a great president. Hilary allowed for our brave ambassadors to be killed in Benghazi and she should is NEVER be president"

Would anybody but it if Rafael said, "You can't criticize or fact check that ad, because my children are off limits!"
