Los Angeles closes all schools in response to "credible" terrorist threat.

Courtesy of the LA Times:

Officials closed all Los Angeles Unified School District campuses Tuesday morning after receiving a "credible threat" of violence involving backpacks and packages left at campuses.

Authorities said they plan a search operation of all of the LAUSD's more than 900 schools. The nation's second-largest school district has more than 700,000 students.

“I think it’s important to take this precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past,” LAUSD Superintendent Ramon Cortines said.

The move comes less than two weeks after two shooters killed 14 people in San Bernardino in what was the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11.

I saw that superintendent on the news this morning and he looked a little shaken up, saying that they receive threats all of the time but the specificity of this one convinced them to respond in this way.

And of course this is EXACTLY what the terrorists hope to achieve by launching attacks here in this country or simply threatening an attack.  They have managed to completely disrupt the lives of thousands of children and their parents, and caused widespread panic in the second largest city in America.

Welcome to the new normal in America.

I think that most parents and children's lives were changed every time a shooting took place in an American school.
How many mass murder plots have been adverted over the past few decades that had nothing to do with "terrorists"?
Is one less frightening than the other? Why do we seem less fearful and less offended if the assailants are like us?

America has Christian terrorists within our midst.

Can you imagine the Hell the superintendent would have received if something had occurred at one of his schools? He was absolutely correct in his decision and if it put parents of the kids in disarray, so be it!

    1. So, now, any kid with an email account can shut down his/her school.

Maybe I missed something…do we have any information that this is related to ISIS? We have enough of our own right wing nuts.

could the *credible threat* have been perpetuated by the NRA ?

This "credible threat" came via an email from Frankfurt Germany. The same email was sent to NYC, and the police commissioner determined it was a hoax and the school day went on without interruption.

    1. And they are now saying that it appears the e-mail did not originate in Germany, but was routed through there to cover their tracks.

It is believed to have originated in America, and was definitely a hoax.

I have a feeling this will not be the last one either.

Simply because an e-mail might have come from Germany, it is not proof that it actually originated in Germany. It is not that hard to reroute emails that originate from servers in the U.S. through servers in foreign countries.

This could actually be a threat from ISIL but I will believe it when there is official confirmation for a security organization.

Good luck, the closer we get to Christmas! No matter if it is home-grown or foreign - attacks with mass casualties are terrorism attacks. Wether committed by Muslims or Christians.
But either way, Christmas will be a very 'ripe' time for attacks or threats.

The LAUSD threat assessment process might need some tweaking. Origin of electronic threats probably should be determined by someone with expertise in that area. LA surely has some companies that qualify and would be happy to be on retainer.

Hope Anonymous can shake it out - would not be one bit surprised if this threat were of domestic origins ..

  8. Just saw this on The Daily Beast:

A 17-year-old was hit and killed by a service truck while crossing the street to go to school in Los Angeles on Tuesday. The incident occurred as Los Angeles schools were shut down due to a terror threat. The driver told police he did not see the boy and police speculate, as he had a backpack, that he was a student.

Speculation indeed. Some 17 year olds are college students. Some 17 year olds are private school students. Some 17 year olds are homeschooled or cyberschooled. Some 17 year old go to school part of the day and work or intern. Some 17 year olds are dropouts. Many people carry backpacks.. They are convenient. And at 17 you think the kid would be able to cross a street safely.

    2. Just to clarify, I was quoting what it said on Daily Beast. It wasn't me speculating.

    Thank you, GOP.
    Thank you, NRA.
Thank you Republicans against any kind of gun control.
Thank you, media, for feeding the paranoia.
And last and least, thank you, Sarah Palin, for being a prime mover of that hate and fear.

A shame, but the US kids of today and the future will be living with this type of thing as the norm. Like so many countries in the middle east. Much of the terrorism home grown.

Is this type of thing happening in the other 2 'major power' countries (China and Russia)?
