President Obama's Address to the Nation in full.

Here are some of the highlights courtesy of Vox:

And I know that after so much war, many Americans are asking whether we are confronted by a cancer that has no immediate cure.

Well, here's what I want you to know. The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIL and any other organization that tries to harm us. Our success won't depend on tough talk or abandoning our values or giving into fear. That's what groups like ISIL are hoping for. Instead, we will prevail by being strong and smart.

The President then laid out a four step approach to stopping the terrorists.

These included going after terrorist plotters, providing training and equipment to those fighting Daesh on the ground, working with friends and allies to disrupt terrorist groups, and finding a resolution to the war in Syria.

Of course this address has already come under attack from those on the Right, who desperately want to start another war, or restart the ones the President is trying to end, but then again what would we expect from them at this point?

The President also said this which really agitated the conservatives:

There are several steps that Congress should take right away. To begin with, Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun. What could possibly be the argument for allowing a terrorist suspect to buy a semiautomatic weapon? This is a matter of national security.

We also need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapons like the ones that were used in San Bernardino. I know there are some who reject any gun safety measures, but the fact is that our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, no matter how effective they are, cannot identify every would-be mass shooter, whether that individual was motivated by ISIL or some other hateful ideology. What we can do and must do is make it harder for them to kill.

For some reason. according to conservatives, the fact that the shooting in San Bernardino was done by Muslims means that it has NOTHING to do with guns, or access to guns.

Magically the fact that they are linked to a terrorist group outside of America, means that the methods by which they killed are simply no longer worthy of concern. Somehow I think that if they had blown their victims up, instead of shooting them, that this would not be the case.

And finally the President reminded us of this fact:

We cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between America and Islam. That, too, is what groups like ISIL want. ISIL does not speak for Islam. They are thugs and killers. Part of a cult of death. And they account for a tiny fraction of a more than a billion Muslims around the world, including millions of patriotic Muslim-Americans who reject their hateful ideology.

Moreover, the vast majority of terrorist victims around the world are Muslim. If we're to succeed in defeating terrorism, we must enlist Muslim communities as some of our strongest allies rather than push them away through suspicion and hate.

Yeah, that didn't go over very well either.

Especially for the Republican presidential candidates who are relying on the fear by the American people, and the ability to manipulate that fear into voter turnout, that is now at the center of many of their campaign strategies.

THAT is why they are attacking this speech so aggressively.

The President is calling for calm, when the Republicans want anything but.

Hey, I didn't even know Obama spoke last night so it was nice to see someone cover it and discuss it. There's been very scant news coverage so thanks Gryphen!

    5. Anon 1:37, what I wrote in my comment to 12:10, also applies to your comment as well. Both of your comments reminds me of the clueless and empty comments you’ll find at the C4P pond, where logic is rarely found, and cult like “thinking” is abundant.

I so detest the Republicans in Congress and those folks/wannabes that are circling the news and media outlets promoting their being the next POTUS! Trump is the worst!

They all come across as uneducated, inept, war promoters, ill informed, not knowledgeable as to governmental matters, fear mongering and race baiters (Muslims, blacks, browns and Asians).

President Obama is the only sane one and he's up to his eyebrows in the horrible problems in this country and world. I don't know how the man maintains his cool with the constant negative media coverage thrown at him every minute of the day. How anyone watches cable or the regular news stations is beyond me! CNN, FOX, OAN and some on MSNBC spread lies and bullshit. Chris Matthews has become the worst on MSNBC. He needs to retire! I can only handle them for a few minutes each day before I switch and ultimately turn off my TV!

Loved President Obama's message to the nation though! Hearing the words of the Republicans today shows the fear they have of the man. Hillary Clinton will be our next POTUS and the Republican bullshit will continue with her! God, but they are a sick group of beings! They are filled with so much hate, anger and fear. Glad I'm not living in their bodies/brains!

I'm just glad that the majority of Americans are NOT sheep and won't be easily led to the slaughterhouse the Republicans are promoting.

We need at least 8 more years of President Obama to really get this country where it should be. I can hear my grandfather cussing up a storm at the republithugs, he was a close follower of politics.

If we go to war again (which I at the current time am against), we need to reinstate the draft. The draft with no exceptions.

Everyone's child gets a chance to die for our "freedom". That would include my children, your children, Donald Trump's children, Sarah Palin's children. Basically, everyone. No college deferments, no getting out of the service due to having young children, bone spurs, poop in your pants, no nothing. If you are between the ages of 18 and 26 and your number comes up, you are going in the Army.

And of course, women right along with the men should face the draft.

My thinking is that if we do have a draft with no exceptions, our politicians would not be so quick to go to war knowing they will have to send their own sons and daughters.

Agree. Even without a war, if there is such a thing, that age group does some form of national service to shake them out of their little snowflake mentality.

That's about the best idea yet, universal compulsory service. We could even have universal health care too!

Yup! This tree hugging, bleeding heart, socialist democrat and mother of children in that age group, thinks compulsory civil service is a great idea. Builds character, I say! And, that universal healthcare (expand Medicare!) is a great idea too.

    4. Is there any way we can also draft those up to the age of 65 so many of the politicains would also be included in a draft. When your beyond the draft age and part of those (politicians) who make the decision to go to war or not, its easy to vote for war when you know your azz is protected will not be shot at.

Carroll Thompson: You are 100% correct. All politicians kids should go to war when declared - no if, ands or buts about it! I'm tired of the brats of politicians being protected (Viet Nam, etc.). Can you imagine Donald Trump boys, young adults in boot camp? Would be a kick in the ass to watch!

I'm hearing "them", the Domestic Teahadists call for closing borders to muslims, and all kinds of nasty bullshit, carpet bomb them, take their oil, send them back, etc... do they realize the more they wiggle and scream, they become what they think they hate?
Muslims have contributed to America's greatness, they've fought in wars, lived the american dream, Mike Tyson, Mohammed Ali, and others have excelled in their fields. One of my doctors is a muslim, and I'd eat off her floor before I would Mike Huckabees. She's well educated, a brilliant obgyn with a waiting list. I've seen her in both muslim garb and, around the house and running errands, in
jeans and a sweater, blouse etc.
POTUS'S speech seemed neutral to me, but then I thought about it, and what do people want to see? Someone calm, focused on the problem and trying to find an answer, or someone losing their shit saying it's the end of the world???

I like the calmness of President Obama and trust him. Happy I voted for him both times too!

I also like John Kerry - both he and our President are working their asses off to protect all of us.

However, Donald Trump is doing nothing but spreading evil and ugliness (verbally) to our country and world! He is the second coming of Hitler!!! Just watching him for a minute will bring your blood pressure up - harming your body! Close him down! He has no solutions!!!
