Cops once found Ted Cruz's wife sitting on the side of the road with her head in her hands and worried she "was a danger to herself."

Courtesy of Yahoo News:

Ted Cruz's wife, Heidi, was once so depressed that a police officer wrote: "I believed that she was a danger to herself."

The incident happened in 2005 shortly after Heidi quit her high-powered job at the White House and moved to Austin, Texas, to be with her husband, who was state solicitor general.

Police responded to a 911 call about a woman in a pink shirt sitting next to an expressway and found Mrs. Cruz sitting on the ground ten feet from speeding traffic with her head in her hands.

I believe this was probably the day that she realized, "Oh God, I'm married to Ted Cruz!"

However the good news is that Heidi Cruz, or the "Stepford Wife" as I like to call her, is all better now:

She rebounded from her depression and now says:

“I want to use it to strengthen people around me and to recognize that we all have rough patches.”

Well of course she is doing better now, that anti-depressant medication is the shit.

Now I think we finally have the answer as to how ANYBODY could be married to such a disgusting POS. Clearly she is well medicated.

So I think she is fair game, how can she attend to the First Lady activities and functions if she's sitting on the south lawn wondering if she should go play in the traffic or not.

    5. Depression is not necessarily a lifelong disease. There is something called situational depression that can occur to anyone in a situation such as divorce or after being fired from a job. In her situation at the time of moving to another geographical area of the country after leaving a job she no doubt loved could very well cause a depression in someone. We may like to joke about it being because she just married Cruz, but that too could have contributed to her depression being that she is now in a permanent situation with a new partner she is not used to living with. How many people have had doubts after they just got married? I think most of us have been in that situation. I know I was, and in my case the problem was justified and it never went away for 9 years until I got a divorce.

Any ways, don’t just assume that she has a mental problem with depression until you hear it from her, or her doctor.

I say that, but if I was married to someone everyone seems to hate and is an asshole, I would have been institutionalized and would have welcomed it.

I agree, there are different degrees of depression, and not all depressed people are diagnosed with clinical depression. I'd rather have them err on the side of safety anytime someone voices concern they may be a danger to themselves. I wonder if she passed a background check to own a gun?

To recap; Sen. Thomas Eagleton, D/Missouri ran as VP candidate with George McGovern against Nixon in 1972. As you suggest, his life became hell when the media attacked him for his treatment for depression.
As is mentioned below, Kitty Dukakis was the wife of the Democratic candidate running against G.H.W. Bush in 1988. Betty Ford was also treated badly by the media.
However, NOTHING concerning candidates or their wives/husbands is out of line on this blog. There is a difference between reporting facts and going full-bore on candidates as was done to Eagleton.

Hey Gryphen, I'd be more interested in hearing how Cruz reconciles his health care policy with his wife's serious illness. Before Obamacare, Texas was hell for parents of mentally ill children, who were often forced to give up their parental rights in order for their child to qualify for state care. I was lucky and could liquidate my retirement. Cruz wants to take us back there, despite knowing how devastating these illnesses are.

Sorry to hear that. You claim to know about mental illness but what you describe is situational depression (depressed because of who she is married to). The article describes chronic depression. This can be treated like any chemical imbalance with modern drugs. The fact that antidepressants worked is almost diagnostic.

No one is trying for damage control that I see. No one is denying that she has depression. All people are saying is that linking it to her husband is petty and low. 1. Good point 12:13. It makes you wonder if Cruz’s ego and narcissism is so high he doesn’t think about how his decisions might affect his family. I hope her depression is only situational and not chronic. If her depression is chronic, then he is thoughtless about others, especially to those in his own family. It wouldn’t surprise me from everything we have heard about him from his dorm roommate to those who know him in the Senate. And yes, it does seem as if everybody who knows him hates him.

Very shortly after he won his seat in the Senate he started his Presidential campaign by traveling the country making speeches. He couldn’t even wait until he made a name for himself in the Senate, and even then he shut down the government as a political trick to get notice. In doing so he angered his own party and Boehner later called him a “jackass”.

Oh for god's sake! Thus woman worked for Goldman Sachs in a high level position, and before that for Bush. She IS fair game for whatever the press does to her because she has aligned herself with a sociopath who would withdraw any shred of support from any other human, including the mentally ill. I KNOW depression, and I would never expect to be excused for putting fame and power and money above my humanity. She is hideous.

GOP family values. Where was Cruz while this was happening? Things like this don't just switch on and off, Ted put himself and his career before his wife's health, and Gryphen's the bad guy for pointing it out? Pffft.

  45. I don't like Cruz at all, but his wife should be off limits.

This woman is wife a freshman senator.

Michelle Obama is the FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES with two lovely, smart, well behaved children.

And she has been smeared and mocked and attacked from the moment she came on the national scene. And so have the girls. There is such an utter disrespect for her, it's appalling. So no, no wives of men who might eventually have their hands on the levers of power and whose spouse would traditionally become the first lady, who suffers from a mental illness, is not OFF LIMITS. No way, know how. In fact, she should be scrutinized even more so.

And I say this having lived with unipolar depression my entire adult life. I KNOW what it is and we don't want a first lady who suffers from it.

    2. I suffer from it too. I have no problem with a public figurehead in the same situation. It might wake the world up about an illness which destroys millions of lives. I, for one, would be happy to have such a visible advocate for better treatment for this Hell on Earth.

Good lord, the vapors! You smug, self righteous asshats need to shut the fuck up. This woman is fair game, absolutely. She is a potential first lady with mental illness. The pressure of that role is huge and non stop and her unfitness to fulfill the role should be brought up and made available to voters. Why the hell not. Ted doesn't hesitate to use his KIDS to spew his vile and disgusting positions, so he made her and them fair game. Get over it and take your judgements and criticisms over the C4P. Gryphen knows EXACTLY what he is talking about and he knows exactly how to gauge his commentary and in this case he is RIGHT ON.

Because we are supposed to be better. Mary Todd Lincoln was batshit crazy and somehow the nation survived.

  47. I despise Ted Cruz and I am not a troll.
But, personally, I can't make fun of someone's depression.
Just my 2 cents. Flame away if so inspired. Love, V

Sounds like the Cruz family put this info out before the opposition did it.

"She rebounded from her depression" sounds like they are the ones making it sound like depression is no big deal.

I'm betting the reason was a massive fight with Raphael about religion, and how GOD DEMANDS TOTAL SUMISSION OF WIVES TO THEIR HUSBAND,
    ie. Ephesians 5:22

Imagine being trapped in a marriage where any decisions you want to make for your life, career, child care, education, or even what you wear have to be "approved" by your husband.

These hard core extremist Christians have a sad legacy of wife abuse, child abuse, and run their homes like a 12th century pope.
