Is Bernie Sanders the Atheist presidential candidate we are looking for? Maybe.

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

But as an adult, Sanders drifted away from Jewish customs. And as his bid for the White House gains momentum, he has the chance to make history. Not just as the first Jewish president — but as one of the few modern presidents to present himself as not religious.

“I am not actively involved with organized religion,” Sanders said in a recent interview.

Sanders said he believes in God, though not necessarily in a traditional manner.

“I think everyone believes in God in their own ways,” he said. “To me, it means that all of us are connected, all of life is connected, and that we are all tied together.”

Actually science has proven that we are all connected by the planet on which we live, the materials that compose our bodies, and the energy we share to survive, so there is really NO reason to introduce gods into the equation.

Actually IF Sanders was to subscribe to any religious belief or philosophy it would seem that Taoism would be a far better fit than Judaism, or any of the other western religions.

Having said that it really does sound as if Bernie is given the most political cautious answer he can give while covering for the fact that he is in reality an Atheist.

Just my opinion, but then I also think that there are a large number of Atheists in politics, entertainment, and the media who are still too afraid to accept that label publicly.

    Gryph,
Wanted to make sure you saw this, I apologize if it's already been posted. Inside account of Track's service http://www.ifyouonlynews.com/politics/eyewitness-this-soldier-saw-governor-sarah-palin-demand-special-treatment-for-her-son/

Interesting article. I'm sure he's not the only person that ever felt the need to spit in Sarah Palin's drink.

"Do you know who I am??" Of course he got special treatment. That's the way they roll. I'm sure Sarah first ran for Mayor so the family would be 'special' in Wasilla. Same with her other 'jobs.' Sarah, as we know, is all about "MEMEME." It's almost a wonder that she didn't demand that Track be on the front lines. Think what a martyr she could be had he been shot or maimed.

  3. There are millions and millions of closet atheists. It's the next outing; the more that come out, the easier it will be for the next ones. How far away are we from, "I'm an atheist, get over it." ?

I am a believer in God. I am a follower of Jesus. And I don't care who is an atheist or not. My motto is, live and let live!

Also I am a lifelong dyed-in-the-wool liberal Democrat.

But I do care if my President is an atheist.

I appreciate Bernie Sanders' approach to acknowledging his prior religion and his decision to publicly share his transition from all religious categories or labels. I don't see a need or requirement for him to categorize or label his position as atheist --especially when he just clearly stated he decided to walk away from all religious categories and labels. THAT, to me, is the ultimate definition of freedom.

      Wouldn't you agree?

Bernie's brother lives in the UK, and is an elected politician. I imagine the two have had many discussions about healthcare. The UK version is by far the better of the two.

Athiests in much of America are viewed with as much, or even more suspicion and dislike than even Muslims.

I visited Texas and Louisiana a while back, and found that people just ask which church you attend without even considering you might be anything but a right wing WASP.

We athiests, anti-thiests and agnostics may be as much as 30% of the entire US population, but many like President Obama dare not say it because it can profoundly and negatively affect your job and your relationships with neighbors, and even friends.

Bernie Sanders will be attacked for being Jew before this is all over, you mark my words.

If i had a choice between a winning Powerball ticket and having the power to peacefully eliminate religion world wide, I'd take the latter in a second.

Me too! And replace it with a curiosity about science and a fascination that compels the world's people to implement practices that requires continuous input and accountability from future generations equally.

      A girl can dream.

  9. Rotate the p in GOP and you have GOD, a party that operates very much like God: ubiquitous, demands allegiance, requires faith, promises hope and salvation, and but ultimately delivers on nothing. It just preaches, passes the collection plate, and asks you to believe.

When a man like Bernie says he "isn't particularly religious" he's giving everyone the big clue.

It's not a great leap of faith (pardon the pun) to read into it that Bernie Sanders is at least agnostic, and more likely athiest, and doesn't care about mythology and religion.

If you want to insult the host of the blog who has worked tirelessly to bring important issues to the forefront, you are like a bad house guest.

Not only are you inconsiderate, but the host actually allows your posting through, proving that IM is not like most far right blogs where any criticism is deleted in seconds or blocked

      I suggest you apologize.

I'm glad he said what he did, not that anyone needs "permission", but I know non believers who are far and away more moral, upstanding, trustworthy, and show love for all humanity.
I'm atheist and have no problem getting along with people of all religions. I draw the line and the claws come out when people try to change me, or label me wrongly based on a quote from a holy book.
For some reason, some people believe if you don't belong to a religion, then you MUST worship the devil etc etc etc.
My kids were raised without religion, we left it to them when they become of age to find their own spiritual paths. We didn't have our son circumcised when he was a baby and my family went nutz. "It's a covenant between him and God". Well, as his parent, it's not my choice to make. Why should he get it done when it's not necessary? He's over 18 and the idea never entered his mind.
