Indiana Governor Mike Pence signs bill making it illegal to get an abortion based on fetal abnormalities.

Hey I don't care how deformed your baby might be, I'm telling you to have it anyway.
Courtesy of Fox 59:

Gov. Mike Pence signed a bill Thursday that prevents women from aborting a fetus due to Down syndrome or other genetic abnormalities.

The measure also prohibits abortions sought on the basis of gender or race.

Abortion providers could face wrongful death lawsuits or professional sanctions if an abortion is performed solely on the basis of a genetic condition.

First off I want to say that I could not imagine feeling that I had any right to insist that a woman give birth to a child with birth defects, Down syndrome, or any other disability.

Secondly does Mike Pence not realize that the children born with these challenges also place a heavy burden on the states in which they live, and on the government as a whole?

It is NOT only the families of these children who are forced to meet what can sometimes be overwhelming challenges, but they also need Medicaid to help them pay for services, the public schools to accommodate their child's educational needs, and access to mental health facilities, nurses, physical therapists, caregivers, physicians, and many other services the bill for which the federal or state government must pay.

Now of course THAT is no reason for a woman to choose abortion over taking her baby to term, but for a so-called "fiscally conservative Republican" you would think that might factor into forcing a woman to give birth to a baby she may be unfit or unable to care for effectively.

I'm sorry, was I being too logical again?

Just another example of 'get the government out of my life unless it pertains to my lady parts.' How does any female vote for this crap? This is not Biblical. Not logical. Not even reasonable. A woman and her doctor should make all medical decisions, not some dictator in a nice suit pointing his finger at us and demanding we do what he says. I love how the RW hates Obama because of the 'mandates' in the ACA, but are gung-ho behind these sorts of dictatorial laws that are all over the country now. We have to vote these people out. They are eroding our rights every single day, not Obama.

My DIL has a handicapped sister who is now 32, and yes, her father gets a check every month. And will for the rest of her life. He is a retired corporate attorney-you think he needs the help?
I doubt her mom would have aborted her anyway, and I don't know if they even knew back then. But the woman is barely reading, will never hold any kind of job, and is hard to understand. When her dad dies, it will be up to my son and his wife to care for her, along with the two kids they have.

Your DIL's father needs to set up a trust fund account with a neutral trustee for his disabled daughter and let the married couple get on with their own lives. It is HIS responsibility to care for her not the married couple with two kids. See Rain man for an example of how it is done.

No one should complain about Social Security disability payments. It can happen to anyone. We have retired friends with a middle-aged son who receives SS disability payments. His parents could never afford to continue his care and upkeep after their deaths. It is important that he receive this help. It is the least that we, as a humane society, can do for others.

12:34. Having been the niece of an aunt with Down’s I know what you are talking about regarding care. It does not go away when the parents die or become incapacitated, it becomes the responsibility of the next generation. When one decides to birth a child with Down’s they must make provision for this child for the rest of its life. Maybe churches could stand up and take this on?

No complaint about SSD as a program. However when the government makes it mandatory to give birth to DS and other babies with severe birth defects, and then at the same time make dire warnings about the health of the SSD fund, ....I cry foul. You can't impose draconian programs on women and children without even mentioning the funding, how we will keep paying.

Anon at 2:34 pm. You are right but the GOP politicians who enact these draconian measures have absolutely no interest in the child once it has been born. Yet most of them claim that they are religious people who are willing to spout the one or two Biblical passages they've learned by rote, always from the OT, to support their cruel and vicious positions.

It isn't even about "unwanted" but many genetic abnormalities are "incompatible with life" essentially this forces a woman to gestate to stillbirth. If a woman is older, it robs her of precious fertility months.

Abnormalilties like this are a true medical reason for abortion. 90+% of the time, the human body will spontaneously abort. Failure to do so surely is a medical malfunction and using artificial means to do what a normal body would naturally do is legitimate cause to abort.

Sounds like Puke Pence just wants to torture women.

In many states that have passed these types of laws, a woman who miscarries is in danger of being tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison for years. I remember reading about a woman who fell down some stairs in her home, miscarried, and was prosecuted for deliberately killing her child, even though it was an accident. These tools want every fetus carried to term and don't seem to be in the mood to believe that a woman can miscarry. I just cannot understand them being opposed to making contraception easily available to women and forcing women to have kids they may not want at the same time. There's something seriously wrong with these folks, and they're not only sitting in state legislatures, they're sitting on the SCOTUS. I was appalled when I read earlier this week that the so-called conservative justices think a woman can buy a contraception only insurance healthcare policy on the Obamacare exchanges. Justice Sotomayor had to tell them that these types of policies aren't sold on the exchanges and that what they believe is a falsehood.

Don't forget, part of this law is the requirement that if you have an abortion or miscarriage you are forced to legally bury or cremate the remains, no matter if it is a 1/4 cup of bloody tissue.

    4. Everyone needs to google the article about the "gift" the fairygodmother at Disneyland gave to this woman.

Her fetus was diagnosed with a severe birth defect at 21 weeks. She opted to carry to term, with all the expense and heartbreak that entails. The baby lived for 85 hours. (No telling in how much pain it suffered.)

The parents had their daughter cremated and a grief counselor suggested having the ashes bagged and sewn into a teddy bear. They also recorded their daughter's heartbeat and put that in the bear too. They take this bear everywhere with them. They sleep with this bear. And they presented the bear to the fairygodmother at Disneyland for an autograph for their dead daughter.

Now I know people grieve in different ways but this is just plain sick.

I have to wonder, if the guilt the god-people lay on their believers were NOT at play here, if that couple would have been better terminating the pregnancy at 21 weeks rather than live the rest of their lives with this overwhelming grief. And the mental illness this grief may lead to.

So there are many, many Hoosiers who had no insurance (making over $5K but below $20K) Their Family and Social Services is completely dysfunctional - giving our ocntradictory information that does 180's depending on the day of the week. NOTHING is online, so poor people have to track to centralized offices that are open bankers hours only, and often de facto closed for lunch.

Then, until a couple of years ago, if you had a mentally ill or handicapped kid, even a violent one, the parent had to abandon and allow themselves to be charged with neglect and sign away parental rights to get residential care.

Education is also a crapshoot, as funding often makes kids take long bus rides daily, to programs that can accommodate them.

And, there is more...but enough for now.

The sole purpose of these laws to force women in lower economic levels to produce babies.

The Governor gets political points for "protecting the unborn" while blatantly ignoring which women retain "choice" and which women are simply objects for his political gain.

Had Sarah Palin resigned the governorship when Trig came into her life because she was determined to make his life the best it could possibly be, people would have understood and admired her. As it is, he became her photo prop for years and now, for some bizarre reason, he's Bristol's sympathy prop. Next, when his next court date gets closer, we'll probably see him in photos with Track.

They don't see their family member with DS as an individual with special needs, who with help can make the most of whatever skills, talents, and abilities they have to live as full and independent a life as possible.

They see themselves as wonderful because they are taking on the care of someone who they see as a burden. Oh, they claim to love their little burden, yet they do nothing to help their burden.

If you callously think every baby should be brought to term - YOU should have to spend a year - hell, a month - a WEEK - in the NICU, taking care of these tiny, tiny babies whose entire lives are screaming misery.

He was sharing the space with another baby who had been there for a month and was about to be moved to a different part of the unit - for babies for whom there was no hope. That poor baby's mother was there all day every day, never with the father, watching through the glass and hoping for a miracle. i tried to convince myself that the father could not come because he had to work but I don't think that was the reason. So, she waited for a miracle. Sadly no miracle had happened by the time we took our
      remarkably healthy baby home.

At the time I had never thought much about abortion. I had been so desperate to have a child but, between my complicated and challenging pregnancy and the experience of watching this devastated woman outside the NICU window staring at the tiny baby who barely moved, I became a real believer in a woman's choice. A choice that no man should be allowed to interfere with - ever.

In either country, the government is in charge of the decision. And this is why Roe v. Wade was decided on a fundamental Right to Privacy. Unless, of course, women can drop their children at your door and sign adoption papers. Just think of all the dependents on your tax returns! Hospital bills, day care, food, clothes, medicine, etc. Would you sign a paper saying it's the law that you personally adopt all these forced births?
    Proceed, Governor.

Are there ANY brain cells left in the GOOP (yes, that's spelled right)? Most of those who think they should dictate what a woman does with her womb should have been aborted.

Where does he think all these non-aborted disabled people will be housed? Going back to the shitheap 'homes' for disabled and mentally ill from the 19th century?

Here comes ZIKA...and Indiana will be the Republican flagship state of 24-7 health care and compassion for those babies and their families. (sarcasm off)

This GOP dweeb is cut from the same Tparty cloth as those GOP dweebs in Michigan and Wisconsin. For them, it is more important to rule rather than govern. Not unlike the mullahs they like to threaten us with.

  45. This "law" should immediately be enjoined by the IN federal court pending federal review. It will be struck down as an unreasonable restriction on a woman's right to choose. A waste of taxpayer dollars from the self-proclaimed party of fiscal responsibility.

If I thought it would pound any sense into this pinhead's brain, I suggest that he spend a day (if he could last that long) taking care of a severely deformed baby or make him sit there and watch it slowly die.
