Shooting at the US Capitol! Update!

Courtesy of CNN:

U.S. Capitol police shot a male suspect Monday afternoon following reports of gunfire at the Capitol Visitor Center, law enforcement officials said.

A female civilian bystander was injured by shrapnel, but no U.S. Capitol Police officers have been injured.

The gunman attempted to go through the metal detectors at the Capitol Visitor Center entrance. When those magnetometers beeped, he was stopped by security and then pulled out a gun. A Capitol police officer then shot him, sources told CNN.

The Capitol complex was locked down for nearly an hour following the incident. The Senate Sergeant at Arms has told staffers and others to "return to normal operations."

There were earlier reports that the person injured by the gunman's bullet was another Capitol police officer, but that is apparently not the case.

There are also reports that the gunman, Larry Russell Dawson, was known to the Capitol police as they had run ins with him before.

You know a rational person might wonder if this might not make a certain political party a little less supportive of the idea that every American has the right to own a gun.

But it won't.

Update: Suspect is alive and undergoing surgery right now.

It is being stressed that this is NOT an act of terrorism.

How on earth could someone get a gun into the Capitol?
It is getting so bad, people will be able to take guns anywhere. The White House, The Capitol, airports, banks, schools, hospitals, these places use to be off-limits for guns. They already take their guns to church with them, and Texas is trying to allow teachers to carry guns into the classrooms, and college students to carry guns on campus.
Now it looks like the NRA is winning.

    Heaven help us all!

The Capitol Building complex has a visitor's center. That's the entrance for the general public. The gunman didn't get beyond the metal detectors.

Clearly standing in line for a metal detector can be dangerous because of the risk of collateral damage. You would think the average nutcase would be smart enough to open fire BEFORE triggering detector.

Fortunately, today's shooter doesn't seem to be the brightest.

Huh? Hate groups for hire??? If a group needs to be paid to hate, they aren't really a hate group. Mercenaries, perhaps, but that's not what you wrote.

… to try and ruin trump.

All she needs for that is to get him on a debate stage on live TV!

She wants to start a new world order …

Zapping modern society with massive EMPs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse, as suggested by the site Richards cites, is hardly the path to world domination. Get real!

  4. Of course it is not considered terrorism if the person is white, an American and probably a christian because it seems the dictionary definition of a terrorist in this fucked up culture is . . . . a muslim.

It most certainly IS an act of terrorism. It just happens to be the NRA sanctioned type of terrorism.

I had an interesting phone call today from the NRA. (Michigan)

Tom Blah blah, really nice like he knew me said he was a NRA card holding member had a short survey then he started to read a "short statement" from the president of the NRA.

Unfortunately for him, he paused after Wayne's name and I told him "you can all go to hell" and hung up.

I let people know, if my house gets shot up, to tell the police it might be the NRA!!!

How much will Sanders raise your taxes? A lot.

A new calculator from Vox.com and the Tax Policy Center helps you calculate how much the various presidential candidates will raise or lower your taxes.

For me, the biggest surprise was how much more in taxes most people will pay if Bernie Sanders’ proposals are enacted into law. In contrast, under Hillary Clinton’s plan, most people’s taxes won’t change by much.

Sanders supporters will tell you that the increase in taxes is illusory, as you’ll be paying much less for health insurance under a single-payer system, and you’ll be able to send your kids to state college for free. So these freebies offset the increase in taxes. And that may be true. Or it may not. We have no way of really knowing what will or won’t get passed into law, nor how it will play out in practice......

      Trump

      Cruz
      I would pay 19,170 less

      Clinton
      I would pay $400 more

      Sanders
      I would pay $18,650 more

Keep in mind, folks, that whenever the Republicans talk about lowering taxes, they're mainly addressing their rich constituents. The people who suffer, with cuts to everything, are the rest of us.

In Michigan, we now have a huge surplus but I live in a relatively prosperous county that now has the largest deficit in the state. The roads in our state are still a disaster (despite efforts to get the state to put any money into repairs), our school systems are falling apart, the infrastructure of the state is in desperate need of reconstruction, and Flint still does not have decent water. This is a gift from the GOP to the people of Michigan. No one will even whisper "raise the taxes" even though many of us are willing to pay more IF the issues are resolved. By the way, our GOP governor is a multi-millionaire businessman but our tax dollars are paying his legal bills over the disaster he and his henchmen caused in Flint.

Unfortunately, if Michigan is typical of many states (and I believe it is), as the general election approaches, when anyone mentions what Bernie Sanders' grand plans will cost the taxpayers, people will run at breakneck speed away from him.

Years of painstaking education is needed to get voters in this country, after having "no-new-taxes" pummeled into their brains for decades now, to understand finally that "you get what you pay for." Republicans understand; they do not want citizens to have any services whatsoever. Their mantra is Grover Norquist's famous "drown the federal government in a bathtub." Michigan's governor has proved it. Republican legislators swear allegiance to Norquist, despite their oaths of office. God help us all.

No the people that suffer the most under both parties plans ( except Hillary's) are the middle and upper middle class. Sorry, but I am in my retirement and worked very hard for what I have and don't think my back needs to be bent for Bernie's "free stuff".

Anon at 5:35 pm. My husband and I are also both retired. We are not rich people but we understand that taxes, at every level, need to be raised to provide what should be provided - and I'm not talking about Bernie Sanders' dream projects, even though some of them, like universal health care, should be a reality. I'm talking about fixing what has been broken by years and years of Republican failure to govern.

Well...blah...blah...blah. All those RWNJ's 2nd Amendment nut cases who are on the NRA payroll are fools who think we should let open and concealed carry nutcases in nearly every place except where they work or where they hold their convention. To them, it's OK to REQUIRE guns in schools and many other public places but not where THEY hang out. Think my father would have called that mentality, "chicken shit", perhaps a crude, yet perfect description of these freaks.
