Bernie Sanders claims that Hillary Clinton is unqualified to be President.

Courtesy of CNN:

Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that Hillary Clinton is not "qualified" to be president, a sharp escalation in rhetoric in the Democratic primary.

"Secretary Clinton appears to be getting a little bit nervous," he told a crowd in Philadelphia. "And she has been saying lately that she thinks that I am 'not qualified' to be president. Well, let me, let me just say in response to Secretary Clinton: I don't believe that she is qualified, if she is, through her super PAC, taking tens of millions of dollars in special interest funds. I don't think that you are qualified if you get $15 million from Wall Street through your super PAC."

Of course the problem with this statement is that Hillary did NOT say that Bernie was unqualified to be President.

What she said was the following:

"I think he hadn't done his homework and he'd been talking for more than a year about doing things that he obviously hadn't really studied or understood, and that does raise a lot of questions," Clinton said. "Really what that goes to is for voters to ask themselves can he deliver what he's talking about."

That was based on the New York Daily News interview that has a lot of people wondering about Sanders' ability to do the things he has promised to do.

However it should be noted that Sanders' said "quote unquote" when describing what Hillary allegedly said, and that it demonstrably false.

This was a yuge mistake for Sanders and it is definitely going to have an impact on, not only his campaign, but his reputation as a politician who does not "go negative."

I'll bet the repubs are drooling right now. The only way they can win is if there is infighting between all of us progessive/liberals. The media is complicit as well and if we continue to act like a bunch of fucking children with "he said she said" we're going to wake up to a fucking Cruz for President. Don't you guys get it? This shit happens during primaries, this is what politicians do. Geez, we sound like a right wing blog here tearing each other up. WAKE UP.

The GOP is not going to let a President Cruz happen, nor a Trump. There will be a new horse in this race at the contested convention, hopefully a much more moderate one as the GOP power structure seems to have finally figured out that they need to distance themselves from the nuttiest 25% of their party.

Bernie has lost control of his campaign it is nothing more than a RW shitstorm now. I doubt if he will win the primary (he doesn't have the delegates) if he did I would have to "hold my nose" to vote for him.
He has lost all control. Hearing stuff about him, he doesn't organize his staffers and he just can't get organized. Hillary sat on the Stand for 11 hours. And Bernie is losing his shit? Hillary is qualified and she has my vote.
Oh heard on Steph Miller show, Trump has blackmail shit on fox news Ailes? And he didn't get it from palin either, he got it from mediating the whatever. Developing story...

Anonymous 8:56am - I agree that the idea of "holding my nose to vote for someone" I fundamentally disagree with is a repugnant notion. And, until this week, I was resigned to do just that if Hillary secures the nomination. However, I am no longer sure I can bring myself to do it. I may just sit it out if she and her SuperPAC funds win. And, for the record, I am definitely not a kid looking for a handout. I am a middle-aged 1%-er who is willing to pay more in taxes to help level the crazy playing field in this country.

@8:56 "Holding your nose" while casting your vote is NOT lame. Our political system, as it is now, means we only get to choose between 2, usually unacceptable, candidates.

The next president will likely have an influence on the supreme court that could last a quarter century. Every single one of the Republican candidates could DESTROY the substantial social gains of the 20th century with wingnut Supreme Court judges.

Both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have aspects that appall me. But the specter of my grand-daughters and their daughters at the mercy of a sadistic "conservative" court is enough to make me gladly vote for any/all Democratic candidates.

8:56 you better hope people hold their nose and vote for a democratic candidate they don't really back - you sound like you prefer that those who feel that way stay home & not vote at all. Now THAT is what losers do and the Repubs hope we do. Are you sure you're not a Repub?

I suspect she said that $12 was enough 'for now." Yo can't go from $10 to $15-it takes YEARS. Even the states that have passed it will not see $15 until 2023. Meanwhile, businesses have to find a way to not only pay THAT, but the extra taxes on it, raise prices on goods and services, and stay in business or no one will be making anything. Minimum wage was never supposed to be a living wage. the RW is right about that. I've worked minimum wage jobs as an adult, but as a second income, not the primary.
What we need, and what Bernie isn't talking about, is more manufacturing jobs that ARE living wage jobs with benefits and a retirement plan. You can rally the troops with words, but Hillary has plans to get things done. So far, Bernie just sounds like another Republican to me-promises he can't keep because they are not practical.

Because it would never just jump to 15 in one leap. Much like California's new $15 an hr minimum wage it will climb there in steps up through 2022. Bernie isn't magically going to hand out your "free stuff" to you. And again, nothing can be done in that direction with a GOP controlled house and senate.

634, all last summer must have been a blur. Try using Google. I'll make it even easier---Huffpo, july 30, 2015 article and one from Nov 3 2015. And that's just one publication to choose from. There's a LOT out on this.
I'm hoping Mrs. Clinton has had a true change of heart regarding the much needed wage increase. $15/an hour is just getting by with NO gov't assistance where I live. $12 won't cut it, and add in a chronic immune disease and major organ damage that insurance won't cover. It's unaffordable, and the credit cards we finally paid off have balances once again. For medicine, food, and utilities. We don't dine out or take vacations. I wear the same old clothes I've had since before the Lyme diagnosis. Can't afford to buy more, and I also cut my own hair(looks like shit, too). if I could, I'd pay a stylist and buy some new-to-me clothing, and go to the farmer's market, which would put money into my community but as it stands all i can do is send $$ to corporate utilities, corporate pharma and corporate grocery because I can't even afford the farmer's market. I garden my ass off to grow my family's food, but some days the pain and fatigue are so bad I can't even do that.

705, no, i didnt think ole bernie was a magician but thanks for clarification anyway. I don't want 'free stuff' (careful, your dog whistle words give you away), I want a fair wage for a fair day's work. Do you live in a right-to-work state, or one that allows unions? do you have enough in your bank account to pay for the medicines you need to remain a Living taxpayer as well as food & utilities money and rent for the fam?
Imagine! Just the mere mention of actual truth and suddenly I want free stuff and I MUST be a Clinton hater?
I'm not hating on Mrs. Clinton by saying what she said. I respect Hillary Clinton and would give her my vote over GOP. I just want her to promote policies that help the working poor like me. I reiterate my above musing from 612. I refuse to hate on Mrs Clinton like I refuse to 'love' on Bernie. I am undecided. Clinton fans flinging insults over one little truth won't bring undecideds to her tent. You do your candidate a disservice in this respect, and I don't think Mrs. Clinton deserves to be treated thus.

Yes I do have enough money to pay for my needs because I have worked my whole life ( from age 12) until now into my "retirement". I grew up dirt poor, worked for over the last 30 yrs with a chronic illness ( MS, I also pay over 30% of my gross income into federal taxes.
So what DO you want? Sounds like you expect something. Maybe you should have made better choices in your life before your illness? Maybe you should move to an area where it is cheaper to live? Not my problem if your Governor didn't expand medicare, because it sure sounds to me that you are blaming me for your lack of healthcare.

AS for my remarks about Bernie I will talk how ever I want to. He doesn't deserve any respect from me after stating women's reproductive rights are "not an important issue and he refuses to spend any time discussing them and nor should any other politician". So Fuck Bernie and Fuck his supporters.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous2:47 PM

12:32 so how much do you make to have to pay out 30%(!!) of your gross income in taxes?
Sounds like you're doing FIIIINE, or at least better than we are. You got yours, Jack. Good for you!!
I urge you to re-read and discover that I'd want a fair wage for a day's work. I would also like to be able to collectively bargain for basic benefits barring that fair wage.

I never said i was a bernie supporter so calm down, hun! I'm u-n-d-e-c-i-d-e-d. So much stress will bring on another relapse, or do you relapse-remit?

      I don't want welfare, sorry.
What's wrong with any of that? Wow but you tried to snap my head off.
I'm sorry you grew up poor, like me. I've been working my whole life too, as a farmer's daughter so back off even trying to call my ass lazy. I'm sorry you have MS, sort of like me. My chronic Lyme infection and the months and months of hardcore antibiotics has left me with MS symptoms of all sorts, and heart/lung/eye/liver damage. We spent over $70,000(all our savings) in one year on just Lyme, for just me. I owe my husband the best I can give him for agreeing to that. I'm sorry I can't accommodate you with your captain hindsight suggestions of moving elsewhere(can't afford to and LOVE these mountains and the cool weather helps my Lyme, like your MS gets aggravated in heat and humidity) or having made better choices prior to my very late diagnosis of Lyme. Btw, didn't contract that in a bar, or a dance hall, just working outdoors all my life. On the farm and later on in the plant nursery industry that I obtained my bachelor's(ag science) in back when I was healthy.
I certainly wasn't blaming you for MY damn probs, hun. It's kind of paranoid of you to even suggest that of me. I understand that MS can make one very depressed. Just like Lyme.
I didn't vote the GOP gov in, and never would vote GOP. I voted Dem.
I posit that it is every American's problem that some gov's didn't expand Medicare. It will cost the whole country. I don't have Medicare or any insurance. I pay for it all out of pocket since insurance doesn't cover Lyme therapy. so it's all out of pocket--labs, dr visits, and the meds it takes to keep me alive and functioning so I can care for my family. Maybe you think I should just throw in the towel and kill myself, save you some more angry thoughts? Don't worry hun, i only have a few years left.
I'm still trying to google-find the quote you claim is Sanders'. I want to make an informed choice about whom I'm voting for. And please continue to freely express your opinion, no matter how bitter or thoughtless, as that is your right as an American. I'll fight for your right to say whatever mean or stupid thing you want, and I don't care if you want to insult me. I'm a biiiiiiig girl and have been for centuries.

11:59 No, I don't. It didn't work that way at least 2 presidents before. I have a memory problem due to neuro damage but I DO remember some things. For all else, there's the google. kisses!

Well, I voted for Clinton for many reasons. She's certainly not perfect (neither is Sanders, of course), but I think she will stay the course and protect what we already have. And there's more at stake than just the economy.

I'm just not convinced about Sanders' ability to run the country, especially after recent comments of his.

I am growing to strongly dislike Bernie. He should know as well as the rest of us how difficult it is to legislate healthcare reform. During Obama's first two years as President, the democrats had a strong majority in the Senate and he still had to compromise with the gop to get the ACA to pass. He is causing his supporters to believe the right wing lies about Hillary.

I've said from the beginning that trying to start a revolution in a democratic republic is a lose-lose proposition. And when a candidate running for the Democrats doesn't even have the support of elected Democrats.....well, perhaps it makes for good cable TV, but that's about all. What remains from his candidacy will be a lot of frustrated young people who might be turned off politics forever. And we can blame Sanders for that.

There's a real arrogance shining through, maybe growing as he starts to believe he could actually win this thing. The recent stuff has made me think, waitaminnit, this guy is HOW old? The answer turns out to be 74, turning 75 in September. He starts to remind me of a few relatives of mine who went from iconoclastic to downright nutty in their later years. Still losing respect for Bernie little by little. No actually he's starting to piss me off!

The people who are voting for Trump want a revolution and to destroy the Republican party completely and turn it into an extreme right wing party.

Now I'm seeing how those voting for Sanders want a revolution as well and are happy to destroy the Democrat party in the process, tear down what we've accomplished and start from scratch. Now is not the time unless you want complete & utter political chaos where ANYthing could happen. Now is not the time to weaken our stances and I just don't trust that Bernie is the best person to be able to work with others to accomplish this.

This is not how things get accomplished in our country. Both Trump and Sanders stand for IDEALS and what they propose without details is UNREALISTIC.

Hillary has experience and common sense. Not some pie in the sky promises that will never happen. I believe she is correct in working on the foundations liberals have accomplished and to build on what is already there.

Bernie you just can't do it with your vague promises anymore than Trump is gonna make Mexico pay for that wall and it keep people out of the USA.

And now Bernie with his pro-gun stance has me scratching my head & making me suspicious of him. He's starting to show his true colors and that's a good thing. I think his ego is showing and that if he were to become president he would quickly find out how much in over his head he is and that he would spend a lot of time apologizing to his supporters because he want be able to live up to his promises!

This is the Clinton campaign spinning Sanders' words with help from her friends in the media. Clearly when you look at the whole quote Sanders says she is unqualified in the sense that she is representing monied special interest groups and not the average American. The sort of trolling response by the Clinton campaign (instead of addressing the contributions--the meat of the sentiment, they're focusing on one single word) has turned me off from Clinton just when I thought I could warm up to her again.

She is not a good choice. Her proposition to the American people is not a change from the status quo that gives everything to the 1%, it is merely "if you don't vote for me, you're going to get someone worse, like Kasich". Fine with me, I'd rather deal with that for four years than be strung along for eight.

Oh, and just so everyone knows, we've been in the current bull market for a LONG time. This means that whoever the next candidate is, they're going to pray for a recession in the next couple years so that it can be over and done with before the next election. Anger Management: Sanders Fights for Employees, Except His Own

When Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced three months ago that he'd seek the Democratic presidential nomination, the New York Times described him as a "grumpy grandfather-type."

That caricature has persisted — most notably in a recent Washington Post listicle with the irresistible headline: "7 ways Bernie Sanders reminds us of our grumpy grandpa."

According to some who have worked closely with Sanders over the years, "grumpy grandpa" doesn't even begin to describe it. They characterize the senator as rude, short-tempered and, occasionally, downright hostile. Though Sanders has spent much of his life fighting for working Vermonters, they say he mistreats the people working for him.

"As a supervisor, he was unbelievably abusive," says one former campaign staffer, who claims to have endured frequent verbal assaults. The double standard was clear: "He did things that, if he found out that another supervisor was doing in a workplace, he would go after them. You can't treat employees that way."

Like several others quoted in this column, the campaign worker would speak only on the condition of anonymity, saying that to do otherwise would constitute "career suicide" in a small state such as Vermont. But others echoed the former employee's story, saying the senator is prone to fits of anger.

"Bernie was an asshole," says a Democratic insider who worked with Sanders on the campaign trail. "Just unnecessarily an asshole."

... "He yelled in meetings all the time," says one of Sanders' former Senate staffers...

Rosenfeld quotes Sanders himself in the book as saying, "Some people say I am very hard to work with. They say I can be a real son of a bitch. They say I can be nasty, I don't know how to get along with people. Well, maybe there's some truth to it."...

"Everything was done at the last second," that person said. "He made all the decisions."...

Years later, during a tough interview with Vermont Public Radio's Jane Lindholm, Sanders hung up on the "Vermont Edition" host while recording an interview. Lindholm had been grilling him on a fundraising email he sent just three days after a gunman killed six people in Tucson and injured then-congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

"It surprised me," Lindholm says. "It's unusual for a politician to hang up on you."

But Lindholm says she doesn't hold it against him...

OMG! The problem with Sanders statement is that Clinton supporters totally missed his dig at the Citizens United ruling and his goal to get money out of politics and is trying to change the message to he called me names -- again, like a spoiled child that is not getting their way.

Good Lord!!! He said she is not qualified IF she is taking millions from special interests groups through her SuperPAC. Does she have a SuperPAC? Yes!
Is she taking millions from special interest groups? Yes!
Then, based on the conditions of his argument, she isn't qualified.

Talk about making emotional decisions without processing and using our listening skills.

How fragile is the Democratic Party if an Independent can come in and shake things up like this simply by questioning Clinton's actions? THIS is why so many are flocking to Sanders. Call a spade a spade -- regardless of how much the truth hurts.

    NOT GRUMPY GRANDPA

    SANDERS ABUSED STAFF
    “a screamer and a table-banger”
    December 29, 2015

This is absolutely unsurprising. There's a strong correlation between social justice advocacy and abusive tendencies. The more someone shouts about inequality, the more they relish stepping on people.

Bernie Sanders rants about inequality and billionaires abusing people. But this is what it's like to work for him in real life...

He’s “a prick” and “an asshole” to his staff, known as “a screamer and a table-banger.”

For these reasons, Jaffe said the word some people used to describe Sanders’ attitude toward his employees was “abusive.” (The senator’s field director Phil Fiermonte saw it differently, telling the author that Sanders just has high expectations.)

This is common among Bernie Sanders types. Ralph Nader's ex-volunteers have spoken about his abusive behavior for years.

Despite the millions of dollars he commands, he historically paid his professional staff less than minimum wage. Nader, who told Business Week during the last campaign that he offers staff “unlimited sick leave,” ordered staffer George Riley to take a two-week leave of absence to work on a political campaign, refusing him to pay for the time. When I worked for Ralph Nader in 1980-81, he paid us $8,000 a year, hardly enough to get by on even then. We could scarcely afford the time to spend money, though, because Nader expected staff to work around the clock.

Staff turned over rapidly. Few people could stand the hours, pay and abuse for more than a year or two.

"How can we go out and try to save the world from people when we're grinding people to death all the time?"-- John Esposito, original staffer at Nader's Center for the Study of Responsive Law...

ugh... it's past 2 am Down Under, there is a radio quiz on the radio, and the question is "What did Sarah Palin say were waiting at the border for illegal immigrants?" It's multiple choice and the first person eliminated one of the wrong ones, the next person passed and the third person got it right with a guess. Now they're all laughing at Sara.

I have been an ardent Bernie supporter but this last statement from him that HRC isn't qualified to be President has me rethinking my support. I thank him for bringing much needed discussion to the table and moving HRC a little further left. I am ready to get behind Hillary now. She is more than qualified to lead this country.

    What happened at Sanders U.
When Bernie Sanders' wife was in charge of small, private Burlington College in Vermont, it sank into debt.
By MAGGIE SEVERNS 02/11/16 05:19 AM EST

When Jane Sanders was in charge of a small private college in Vermont for seven years, it sank deep into debt while trying to expand its campus. Many students took out tens of thousands of dollars in loans to attend, but their investment was questionable: Only a third of former Burlington College students earn more than the average person with a high school diploma.

Jane Sanders’ husband, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, has offered a higher-education plan that would make tuition at public colleges free. But it would do little to prod colleges, public or private, to keep costs down or ensure that a college degree is worthwhile for graduates.

With all that cash she'll be able to go toe-to-toe with the Koch's cash cows during the general election. How would Bernie be able to get his message out in the last month or so when the Republicans are spending millions on TV, radio, and internet political ads. Until Citizens United is overturned you would be crazy not to use the money from PACs for ads and gettting the message out.

Bernie has "promised" to do many things if elected that are simply unachievable. They all do it, Obama made hundreds of promises that were unachievable, Hillary is making promises that she would not be able to fulfill. It's politics, that's how it works.

"The former president also addressed questions about money flowing to the foundation from foreign governments with business before the U.S. government, keying in on a $500,000 donation from Algeria in 2010 that was earmarked for earthquake relief in Haiti. As International Business Times reported, that money came to the foundation at a time when Algeria was lobbying the State Department, and the country soon received a large increase in weapons export authorizations from the agency. Some of those export authorizations were for weapons classified as “toxicological agents, including chemical agents [and] biological agents.”

“[Critics] said, ‘Oh you got $500,000 from Algeria at very same time they were lobbying the State Department,’” Clinton said. “Those two facts are accurate but if you put them back-to-back they are incredibly misleading. Here’s why: I never considered that the Algerians gave me the money.”

Clinton said that at the time of the donation, “We put out the word that if anyone wanted to send me money I would forward it on quickly to Haiti where it would do most good and would take zero overhead.” The sequence of the money and the lobbying, he asserted, “was just an accident. To me it was like a pass-through. I didn’t even think about it.”

I fear for a President Clinton because of the obstructionism she'll face in Congress. The legislators who are still hounding her over Benghazi and her emails are going to be the same Congress that she'll have to deal with as POTUS, and you can guarantee that they aren't going to work with her.

I think the obstructionism exhibited by congress during a Clinton presidency will make it seem like Obama had it easy.

I believe that Bernie would face a bit less in terms of counter productive actions from the majority of Congress.

    1. To be fair, Sanders didn't say she was unqualified because of her experience or knowledge. He was saying that all of the Wall street money funneled to her SuperPACs should disqualify her from running because she could not claim the she was not beholden to the corporations which are paying for her election. That was what it looked like to me but they are running with this headline all over the place.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous1:31 PM

You are adding in your own interpretation of the word "unqualified."

Being "unqualified" and "disqualified" are two different things.

Regardless, she is neither. The only thing that would disqualify her from running is if she was being funded illegally. She is not.

      Delete
    3. MA @ 12:56, he did qualify his definition of 'unqualified' to include persons who take funds as you claim. But then I wonder, under Sanders definition, who IS qualified? Just him?

I'm not saying there is no corporate influence in our politics, I'm just sayin, defining qualification to be president the way he did leaves out ... well, pretty much everyone.

As one person on another thread I read noted (and got many derogatory comments because he dared to say), if Bernie is the Dem. nominee he will be facing a huge battle against the Rep. nominee and will need money, and where will that come from?

There are Bernie-affiliated PACs out there, advocating for him.

Of course, I always advise people give directly to the campaigns of the candidate of their choice, rather than PACs. If everyone did that, there would be no need to overturn Citizens United. Just don't ever give money to a PAC, and it will die, just like a certain someone's PAC is in political ICU, hanging on by a thread.

Cuz if you really believe it's in the bag, why aren't you kicking back and letting the old socialist and his minions have their fun and campaign their little hearts out? Sanders and Wife Steered Campaign, Nonprofit Money to Family and Friends
Public records show pattern of payments to Democratic presidential candidate’s inner circle

Bernie Sanders and his wife have on numerous occasions steered money from organizations under their control to friends and family members, public records show.

The payments benefitted the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate, his stepdaughter, and the son of a former colleague in city government whom Sanders has described as a close friend.

Sanders, a self-described socialist, is now running for the presidency on an anti-corruption platform, decrying public officials’ attempts to use their positions for personal financial gain.

Following 16 years as a member of the House, Sanders was elected to the Senate in 2006. His political campaigns were an early vehicle for payments to his family members.

According to Jane O’Meara Sanders, the senator’s wife, Sanders’ House campaigns paid her more than $90,000 for consulting and ad placement services from 2002 to 2004. She pocketed about $30,000 of that money.

Her daughter Carina Driscoll, Sanders’ stepdaughter, also drew a salary from the campaign. She was paid more than $65,000 between 2000 and 2004, according to her mother.

After working for the campaign, the senator’s wife would come under scrutiny for expenditures at Burlington College, where she was hired as president in 2004. While she led the school, it paid six-figure sums to her daughter and the son of a family friend.

Burlington College offered its students a study abroad program in the Caribbean, according to tax filings. It reported spending about $47,000 on that program in the tax year beginning in mid-2008.

Around that time, the son of Jonathan Leopold, a Burlington College board member, purchased a small resort in the Bahamas called Andro’s Beach Club and an accompanying hotel, Nathan’s Lodge.

Leopold served with Sanders in the Burlington city government—as mayor, Sanders appointed Leopold city treasurer—before becoming embroiled in scandal involving millions of dollars in payments to a Burlington telecommunications company.

Sen. Sanders has described Leopold as so close a friend as to be considered “family.” He reportedly discouraged Sanders’ socialist impulses early in their careers. Efforts to reach Leopold were unsuccessful.

Shortly after Leopold’s son, also named Jonathan, purchased the resort, Burlington College began writing it large checks for all-inclusive stays for its study abroad students.

The younger Leopold later said during a deposition related to a lawsuit filed by a student who was injured at the rest that he conducted boat tours and snorkeling trips “on behalf of Burlington College.”

From 2009 through 2011, when O’Meara Sanders stepped down as president of the school, it paid the resort about $68,000, according to annual tax filings. The payments stopped the year after she left the position.

Her departure was a source of controversy. She reportedly overstated pledged contributions to the school in order to secure a loan from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. The diocese lost between $1.5 million and $2 million on the deal, according to local reports.

By that time, the school had paid huge sums to the Vermont Woodworking School, which is run by Driscoll. The college eventually paid the school more than $500,000 for classes at its Fairfax, Vt., campus, about 30 miles from Burlington.

Burlington College even established a Master of Fine Arts program in woodworking with leased space at the school as its major facility.

Tax filings show that the college continued paying the woodworking school in the year after O’Meara Sanders left, but stopped doing so the year after that.

The Sanders campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
