That Texas school district police officer who body slammed that twelve year old girl has been fired.

A lot of you saw that video right here on IM last Thursday and were as sickened by it as I was.

Well there has been an update:

A Texas school police officer who became enmeshed in controversy after he was captured on video seemingly body-slamming a sixth-grade girl has been fired from the San Antonio Independent School District.

District officials said officer Joshua Kehm was terminated Monday amid an investigation into an incident last month at Rhodes Middle School, in which he appeared to restrain and then throw down 12-year-old Janissa Valdez.

“We understand that situations can sometimes escalate to the point of requiring a physical response; however, in this situation we believe that the extent of the response was absolutely unwarranted,” Superintendent Pedro Martinez said in a statement. “Additionally, the officer’s report was inconsistent with the video and it was also delayed, which is not in accordance with the general operating procedures of the police department.

“We want to be clear that we will not tolerate this behavior.”

Well I would certainly hope that they do not "tolerate his behavior."

Personally I would like this officer to face some jail time as well for assault, but I recognize that is unlikely to happen, so I guess we will have to be satisfied with the fact that he has been fired and will not be in a position to do this to anybody else.

I would also hope that it serves as a wake up call to the school districts and police forces around the country that officers placed in schools need specialized training to know how to deal with the students.

Actually considering the aggression demonstrated by this police officer, they should probably also have a mental health screening to determine if they have issues with rage.

Sorry, Ted Cruz. You lost your holy crusade against items like the CodeBlack Double Penetrator Vac-U-Lock and the LoveHoney Triple Tickler Everlasting Wishbone. But keep it up, cowboy, some day you and your alleged and failed sexcapades will be a Wikipedia footnote.

UPDATE: Oh that former roommate of Ted Cruz is just the gift that keeps on giving.

In a perfect world we'd test police for hard drugs and steroids.

    2. That's just a rehash of what we already knew -- that she wouldn't be debating Bill Nye face-to-face, but would discuss climate change (denial) after showing a video of Bill Nye expounding on climate change.

It's not that she's quit anything -- but it's a cowardly way to present her viewpoint. She probably insisted on the format as part of the terms of her compensation for showing up.

Her video will be totally scripted and heavily edited. There was no way she was ever going to do something like this LIVE.

    1. If that were the case in this instance, he might still have a job. Of course most people don't find a body slam, face down on the ground, to be a proportionate response to even an 'aggressive' teenager. These were girls mouthing off.

Every human being-no matter what age-deserves dignity and respect! These kids are being treated like criminals in SCHOOL, a place where they should be pushing their boundaries and learning to become adults. In this particular instance the young girl was having a verbal discussion with another student. There was NO NEED for this law enforcement officer to use force. I suggest you go back and read Gryphen's original post about this incident. He points out that he has been trained to diffuse any situation with "aggressive/confrontational" children without using physical force and if force is called for there are humane restraining techniques. There is enough hate and violence in this world. We need to keep working toward creating an inclusive, respectful and caring society in this country. THAT would go a long way toward instilling the right kind of values in our young people.

If you can't deal with aggressive/confrontational teens, you shouldn't be working in a high school. I'm a 5'2" female, and if I can deal with them, these officers surely can!

"... so I guess we will have to be satisfied with the fact that he has been fired and will not be in a position to do this to anybody else."

That is until he is hired by some other school district who conveniently or purposely fails to do thorough background checks.

We have seen far too many recent instances where bad cops and/or teachers who have been fired just run to a new county or a new state.

One problem, as I see it, there are too many war veterans in law enforcement. Soldiers are trained to use lethal force, while LEOs are supposed to 'serve and protect'. (I do not know if this is the case here, but it is a huge problem. The militarisation of police is alarming)

Look at how they respond. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. SWAT to serve warrants? Heavily armed responses to everything. Military gear and weapons that they use to shoot folks, shoot their pets, shoot bystanders, shoot people fleeing from traffic stops.

Calling the police is a dangerous move these days.

In this case, "this behavior" is a euphemism for child abuse.

He should be charged with 1st degree assault and battery, pay any medical our court costs associated with this issue, be fined a large amount, and do hard time for a felonious assault on an unarmed child.

There is not one excuse for such crime. He could have broken her neck and make her a quadraplegic doing that.

    "SEEMINGLY body-slamming"
"APPEARED to restrain and then throw down"

    Seriously?

"police officer.....fired from the San Antonio Independent School District"

Does this mean he can still be a police officer but will not longer be assigned to a school in this particular district? Maybe they'll just send him out into the neighborhoods where he can pick on kids after school.

  15. Security in schools should be there for external threats and kids with weapons only. Anything else should be handled by staff.

If that tape didn't exist, he'd have gotten a promotion. I only watched the entire tape one time, and I just can't bring myself to watch it again. The "punishment" he got wasn't severe enough, imho. She's a fourteen year old who did nothing that deserved a slap, let alone a full body slam from someone sworn to serve and protect.

OK, maybe I'm lucky to have picked the right school district. No cops in the school. Kids applauded for their ingenuity and trusted for their responsibility.

Just talked to a friend in a large semi-affluent suburban district in another state. Her kid is attending bs say no to drug sessions, for, rolling up a fake joint of tea leave and post it notes. WTF?

Back in the day, if it needed any punishment at all besides a hearty guffaw from a teacher. The kid would have either been asked to design props for the next theater production or, been made to smoke said joint in front of the Asst. Principal. and End of story.

And, oh, he now has this "in his file." Again WTF?
