The White House Correspondents' Dinner Open Thread. Sure why not? Update!

President Obama with his anger translator from the 2015 dinner.
Man I always look forward to this night.

I have to admit I never really cared about the WHCD before but ever since the Comedian-in-Chief took office it is "must see TV."

I have very high hopes for tonight which will be hosted by Comedy Central's Larry Wilmore.

However it is not Wilmore that I am interested in watching, in fact I actually NEVER watch Larry Wilmore anymore.

No I am anxiously awaiting the comedy stylings of on Barack Hussein Obama.

And I have no doubt he will not disappoint.

Here is just a small reminder of his genius from back in 2011.

You know I still contend that this was the night that Donald Trump decided that he was going to make a run for the White House and show that uppity.......President that he could not mock him in public.

Somehow I think that tonight the President will remind him that he most certainly CAN mock him in public.

Update: This was good.

Update 2:

IMO it's highly inappropriate for elected officials and the press that is supposed to report objectively on them to hobnob together at this elitist event. Stephen Colbert had it right.

They raise money for scholarships for journalism majors. One of the commentators mentioned earlier that there are more "famous Hollywood type people" and politicians at this event than newspaper, media, and pundit people.

A judge in Florida told Fox News it didn't even have to report the truth. So the media has no obligation to be impartial or to report the truth.

Unseemly, undignified, embarrassing, and hypocritical. It demeans President Obama to crack jokes about people like Kendall Jenner, people who have achieved nothing through their own efforts but who were simply lucky enough to be born into wealth, fame, and shameless publicity whoring. Why is he giving her even more attention? And if the jokes the president cracked at Donald Trump's expense five years ago are what led to the very real possibility of a Trump presidency, they were best kept private. A truly disgusting and revolting "let them eat cake" spectacle all around.

Seriously? No one should ever say or do anything that a petty, thin-skinned wannabe dictator might take offense to and act on years later?

Donald Trump's reasons for his decision to run for president are his responsibility and his alone, no matter who or what he or anyone else might claim is responsible. No one put a gun to his head and forced him to run.

Unfortunately, the ability to understand complicated humor is one of the first signs of Alzheimer's.

      http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/854767

"Satirical humor uses sophisticated brain processes similar to those involved in problem-solving," lead author, Camilla Clark, MD, University College London, United Kingdom, commented to Medscape Medical News. "The process of how we decipher jokes involves an expectation of what is supposed to happen and then adjustment when something different happens. The brain has to switch fast. Our results suggest that this process appears to be affected early in the development of dementia, with patients often not appreciating satirical humor anymore and preferring more obvious slapstick comedy instead."

I'll bet Michelle and President Obama almost barfed each time they shook one of the media's hands!

Larry, the comedian, sure focused on the black issues and it was entertaining at its best! Especially watching the reactions and non reactions of all the white folks in the audience. Most of them were purely grim faced w/zero smiles or laughter.

This was a black show to its fullest and came perfectly - in timing - at the end of President Obama's presidency. He should have given them all the big finger at the end of it!

Did you see Don Lemon give the comedian the finger from his seat in the crowd?

Loved the part about President Obama's rating going up and showing those two nasty photos of The Donald and Cruz!

I saw one of Trump's sons in the audience. Did you? Noticed that the media didn't focus on him - can't help but wonder why?

Loved the put downs of CNN and MSNBC. They deserved every bit of it - pushing Trump morning, noon and night!

Wilmore’s joke was awesome because, like all good humor, it contained an element of truth. In the case of this joke, it was the total truth. Fox News has been fanning the flames of racism since before President Obama became the Democratic nominee in 2008. Fox has been a willing partner in the Republican plot to win elections by dividing the country along racial lines.

Run on a Ticket With Donald Trump? No, Thanks, Many Republicans Say

Obama had a bit of fun roasting a lot of reporters in attendance (i.e. “Jake Tapper left journalism to join CNN” and calling Spotlight the “best fantasy film since Star Wars“) before getting around to the 2016 race.

And boy, was there a lot of material to work with. He singled out two people in the room: Reince Priebus, who he complimented for running a totally smooth campaign, and Bernie Sanders, who Obama told it “hurt” him a little bit to see the Democrat abandon his fellow “comrade.”

WATCH: Film About Barack And Michelle Set To Debut And The Plot Will Amaze You

Barack Obama’s life has undoubtedly been an interesting one and as the president winds down his second term in office and leaves the public eye, his presidency as well as the years before he became the most powerful man in the world will continue to garner interest in the American consciousness. One new movie attempts to satisfy that curiosity. Southside with You, a romantic dramedy, is based on the president’s first date with Michelle in 1989 on Chicago’s south side.

President Obama poked fun at Hillary Clinton’s lack of appeal among young people Saturday night, joking at the annual White House press corps dinner that Mrs. Clinton was like an aging relative who cannot figure out how to use Facebook.

“Did you get my poke? Is it on my wall?” he said, imagining Mrs. Clinton trying to use the popular social media site. “I’m not sure I’m using this right. Love, Aunt Hillary.”

Mr. Obama also needled Mrs. Clinton for paid speeches she gave for Goldman Sachs. He noted that if his comedy routine, during his final appearance at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, was successful, he could earn “serious Tubmans” — a nod to Harriet Tubman, the American abolitionist whose image will be printed on future $20 bills.

He referred to Senator Bernie Sanders, who was in the audience, as “comrade,” a reference to his political status as a democratic socialist.

But the president reserved his most biting commentary for the Republicans running for president, repeatedly turning to the party’s chaotic nominating contest for comedic fodder.

Mr. Obama mocked Senator Ted Cruz for calling a basketball hoop a “basketball ring” while campaigning in Indiana.

“What else is in his lexicon?” Mr. Obama asked, working hard to contain a broad smile. “Baseball sticks? Football hats?”

He paused, then added: “But sure, I’m the foreign one.”

The president showed a picture of Gov. John Kasich of Ohio eating pancakes as he noted that “some candidates aren’t polling high enough to qualify for their own joke tonight.” And he tweaked Republicans in the audience for their search for an alternative candidate, noting that the options for dinner were steak or fish.

“A whole bunch of you wrote in Paul Ryan,” he said. “You may not like steak or fish. But that’s your choice.”

And then there was Donald Trump. Mr. Obama riffed at length about Mr. Trump, the billionaire-turned-front-runner, who was not in attendance. The president wondered aloud why Mr. Trump had chosen not to be there.

“You’ve got a room full of reporters, celebrities, cameras, and he said no,” Mr. Obama said. “Is this dinner too tacky for the Donald?”

He joked that Mr. Trump had some foreign policy experience because “he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world: Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan.”

And he noted that Mr. Trump may be the best person to succeed in closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

“Trump knows a thing or two about running waterfront properties into the ground,” Mr. Obama said.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Anonymous8:52 PM

The president delivered his remarks with deft comic timing in a lengthy monologue that was both ironic and introspective.

Members of the news media did not escape the president’s acerbic sense of humor. He joked that the movie “Spotlight,” about the Boston Globe’s investigation into sexual abuse by Catholic priests and holding the powerful accountable, was “the best fantasy film since ‘Star Wars.’” And he tweaked the news media for giving Mr. Trump “the appropriate amount of coverage, befitting the seriousness of his candidacy.”

Mr. Obama’s most personal jab at a journalist was aimed at Jake Tapper, the host of “The Lede” on CNN. He noted that several journalists had left the White House beat in recent years, and then added: “Jake Tapper left journalism to join CNN,” prompting Mr. Tapper to raise a wine glass.

As has been his habit, Mr. Obama made fun of himself. He joked about his age — and the common maladies that afflict men over 50 — suggesting that he felt far older than he did when he became president.

“Hillary once questioned whether I’d be ready for a 3 a.m. phone call,” he recalled. “Now I’m awake anyway because I’ve got to go to the bathroom.”

He also noted that he had spent two days in London recently having lunch with Queen Elizabeth II, playing golf with Prime Minister David Cameron, and seeing a Shakespeare performance at the Globe Theater.

“Just in case anyone is debating whether I’m black enough, that should settle the debate,” he said.

Perhaps the most surprising moment of the president’s appearance came in a video produced by the White House showing Mr. Obama considering how to spend his time after leaving office.

In the video, Mr. Obama first turns to Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. for advice. But then the president decides to call someone else for help — former House Speaker John A. Boehner, a Republican who was once a fierce adversary.

The video shows the president and Mr. Boehner sitting in the White House movie theater watching the ending of “Toy Story.” Mr. Boehner notes that he finally got the “grand bargain” that had eluded the two leaders during budget talks.

“On a sweet Chevy Tahoe,” Mr. Boehner says, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and offering one to Mr. Obama, who has spent his presidency chewing nicotine gum to try to kick his smoking habit. The president’s eyes go wide.

Mr. Obama closed his appearance on a serious note, saluting Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post reporter who had been held in an Iranian prison, and who attended the dinner Saturday night. He promised that his administration would “continue to fight” for journalists held against their will.

And he praised the Washington press corps for trying to resist the commercial pressures to dumb down journalism, saying that “there are so many of you who are pushing against those trends.”

He then offered just two words: “Obama out.” He dropped his microphone, and turned from the podium.

President of the United States Barack Obama has made his mark on history.

Many who are self employed, under employed, or who work part time have had life saving health care delivered who otherwise might have died or been disabled for life.

    How's that for death panels?

President Obama has his faults, but the man has had nothing but 99% opposition based on racist bigotry, Christo fascist religious hatred, and jealousy.

If we can get Hillary in January of 2017, I won't exactly be pleased, but the contrast betwee her and that ignorant Orange DrumpF is nothing short of profound

If there are any Bernie Bros here, I hear you.

I was there at the peace marches in the 60's as a young teen, and I did sit-ins for women's rights and civil rights.

I'm all for an egalitarian society, small government, and taxing giant corporations for their fair share.

We don't live in utopia here in the USA.

We have people who base their lives on Iron age mythological relgions, and are told who to vote for on that basis.

We have people so ignorant that they hate someone because they are black, brown, gay, lesiban, trans, female, or disabled.

We have whole states who enshrine discrimination in their laws against LGBTQ people.

We have Supreme Court justices who literally base their votes on religious principles, rather than the US Constitution.

We have a huge, diverse, and divided population across racial and demographic lines, and to govern that herd of cats well and fairly is just impossible given the rancor in our Congress.

But slowly , I see signs of progress towards a better political climate, and more liberty and justice for all.

The Millenials have nearly no prejudice against LGBTQ people, and largely reject the racism of their elders.

Imagine how different the next generation will be!

They are the least religious young generation in America's history, which is a heartening sign.

In 30 years, the so called "moral majority" like Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, Phyliss Schlafly, and Franklin Graham will be dead and gone, and that will have some profound efffects.

I think President Obama will be remembered for being a wise and thoughtful man, and having a steady hand on the wheel, and not running our Ship of State aground.
