Utah declares pornography a "public health hazard."

Courtesy of the BBC:

The US state of Utah has become the first to declare pornography a public health risk in a move its governor says is to "protect our families and our young people".

The bill does not ban pornography in the mainly Mormon state.

However, it calls for greater "efforts to prevent pornography exposure and addiction".

Pornography, the bill says, "perpetuates a sexually toxic environment" and "is contributing to the hypersexualisation of teens, and even prepubescent children, in our society".

Further steps must be taken to change "education, prevention, research, and policy change at the community and societal level" against what it calls an epidemic, but it does not suggest how changes should be implemented.

The bill was signed by Republican Governor Gary Herbert, who said the volume of pornography in society was "staggering".

Yeah especially in Utah where researchers found in a 2009 that it was the number one consumer of online pornography.

So you can only imagine how this new law will be received by the oh so Mormon residents.

When will these people learn that suppressing sexual expression is never the answer?

The only strategy to winning the war on porn is relentless public shaming, long term incarceration and solitary confinement - with chemical castration an option for repeat offenders, dogged interdiction at federal, state and local jurisdictions, international military intervention striking at offshore production and distribution centers and a powerful K-Grad School education campaign designed to effectively frighten children away from explicit material. This is a hundred year war that deserves every possible resource we can bring to bear and then double that amount. No price is too high to eliminate this scourge against decent humanity. Remember, it was this strategy that rid the world of demon alcohol and drugs and in the endless decades ahead we'll see it work against porn!

JUST SAY NO TO PORN! JUST SAY NO TO PORN! JUST SAY NO TO PORN! JUST SAY NO TO PORN! USA! USA! USA! USA! (not a great chant, I know, but work with me, will ya?)

  3. Indeed the huge proliferation of porn in Utah has something to do with the uptight "don't do it" Mormon
attitude. When will they get it. Hell they even want friends to narc on friends who watch porn.

But short of getting rid of the internet--not going to happen-- church and government leaders are just going to have to whine. Or stop clutching their pearls and realize humans like and want to have lots of sex. But if there is some elder screeching at them---they will just watch other people doing it at a safe distance.

Shouldn't porn be called a private health hazard?

This makes total sense and I am all for it. It's huge public health issue and huge cost for Utah and the whole US. Think of how many children's lives are ruined as a result of accidentally getting hold of this stuff. I'm sick of having to worry about being exposed to it everywhere I go - movie theaters, malls, even schools. Think of how many people die or are hospitalized as a result each year. Our whole society would be a lot safer if we acknowledged this is a huge societal burden and were a lot more restrictive about access.
Oh, wait...... I thought you were talking about guns!

Well it just illustrates how f'ed up this country is when porn is can be declared a public health hazard but nobody can do anything about the REAL number one public health problem here - guns/gun violence.

Sorry, mormons, if temple undies don't do the trick, and mormons have larger than average families, porn isn't going to change a thing.
