Robert Reich: "If Bernie does not win....Hillary’s election to the presidency is absolutely essential to the future of this nation and the world."

As many of you know Robert Reich is a rather aggressive supporter of Bernie Sanders, so for him to make this argument is an indication of how dire he considers the situation.

This is a portion of what Reich wrote on Facebook yesterday:

If Bernie doesn’t win the nomination, you have to decide for yourself how active you’ll be in supporting Hillary Clinton. If Trump is the Republican nominee, my personal view is Hillary’s election to the presidency is absolutely essential to the future of this nation and the world.

Now if you visit the link that I provided you will see that Reich seems to think that Sanders still has a pathway to the nomination, which I find bizarre since he is considered an expert on the economy and should therefore be quite good with numbers.

However putting that aside he is certainly correct on the importance of making sure that Hillary beats Trump in November.

And even though I have recently shared some very good news on that front here on the blog, it still requires that we get up and get to the polls.

I would encourage ALL of you to engage in conversations about politics in every venue that you feel even remotely comfortable doing so, and perhaps in a few where you are not so comfortable.

I think EVERY election is important, but it is hard to exaggerate the importance of this 2016 race.

So yeah we need to help people get excited, inspired, and if need be a little frightened, to get them to take this whole thing as seriously as we all know it deserves to be taken.

I started this blog because before the 2004 election I failed to convince the people in my life the importance of voting for John Kerry.

That is NOT a mistake that I will ever make again.

Jane Sanders: We're not trying to flip superdelegates

By NICK GASS 04/29/16 08:47 AM EDT

Bernie Sanders' campaign is not trying to flip superdelegates who are already decided in favor of Hillary Clinton, Jane Sanders said Friday, remarking that if her husband is able to draw closer or even top the former secretary of state in the pledged delegate count, they will come naturally.

"At the end, you know, we're not calling superdelegates and saying will you switch your vote?" Sanders said in an interview with CNN's "New Day."

Sanders: We'll Try to Win With Super Delegates

Last week, the Sanders campaign announced that it was laying off almost half its staff. In addition to the reality of the situation, the nature of the announcement struck me as a somewhat subtle but intentional signal about the campaign's future. But now Sen. Sanders is confidently announcing that the Democrats will have a contested convention.

Now, 'contested convention' doesn't have any real technical meaning. But it certainly seems like Sanders is saying there will be no move to building party unity in advance of the convention (put that off to August, apparently) and his campaign will force genuine votes on the floor of the convention while pressing Super Delegates to back him.

Let's set out explicitly what this means: there is simply no way that Sanders can catch up with Sen. Clinton in either delegates or the popular vote.

According to Hillary's own words,Bernie shoild stay in the race until at least June...

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California," Clinton told the editorial board of a South Dakota newspaper. " I don't understand it," Clinton added, alluding to the calls for her to quit.

Clinton made the statement after pointing out that her husband didn't lock up the nomination until June of 1992, trying to point out that, by past history, it's not late in the campaign.

So yeah, the percentage of poor people voting is not equal to the percentage in affluent neighborhoods. Our voter registration is also lower than in high economic neighborhoods.

I think some of it has to do with having to work until you die, rather than be able to retire, and having no transportation and having to rely on public transportation, which does not always run close enough to polling stations. And if you're working two jobs, you can't take your 30 min. lunch break to try to get to the polls and back.

Interesting article that addresses how democracy evolves and can lead to a tyrant (Trump) and asks "Is he testing democracy’s singular weakness — its susceptibility to the demagogue — by blasting through the firewalls we once had in place to prevent such a person from seizing power? "

    A passage in Plato’s Republic:

And it is when a democracy has ripened as fully as this, Plato argues, that a would-be tyrant will often seize his moment.

He is usually of the elite but has a nature in tune with the time — given over to random pleasures and whims, feasting on plenty of food and sex, and reveling in the nonjudgment that is democracy’s civil religion. He makes his move by “taking over a particularly obedient mob” and attacking his wealthy peers as corrupt. If not stopped quickly, his appetite for attacking the rich on behalf of the people swells further. He is a traitor to his class — and soon, his elite enemies, shorn of popular legitimacy, find a way to appease him or are forced to flee. Eventually, he stands alone, promising to cut through the paralysis of democratic incoherence. It’s as if he were offering the addled, distracted, and self-indulgent citizens a kind of relief from democracy’s endless choices and insecurities. He rides a backlash to excess—“too much freedom seems to change into nothing but too much slavery” — and offers himself as the personified answer to the internal conflicts of the democratic mess. He pledges, above all, to take on the increasingly despised elites. And as the people thrill to him as a kind of solution, a democracy willingly, even impetuously, repeals itself.

Part of American democracy’s stability is owed to the fact that the Founding Fathers had read their Plato"
But it is precisely because of the great accomplishments of our democracy that we should be vigilant about its specific, unique vulnerability:
we all now have our own virtual newspapers on our Facebook newsfeeds and Twitter timelines — picking stories from countless sources and creating a peer-to-peer media almost completely free of editing or interference by elites. This was bound to make politics more fluid." what mainly fuels this is precisely what the Founders feared about democratic culture: feeling, emotion, and narcissism, rather than reason, empiricism, and public-spiritedness. Online debates become personal, emotional, and irresolvable almost as soon as they begin. Godwin’s Law"
The climate Obama thrived in, however, was also ripe for far less restrained opportunists. In 2008, Sarah Palin emerged as proof that an ardent Republican, branded as an outsider, tailor-made for reality TV, proud of her own ignorance about the world, and reaching an audience directly through online media, could also triumph in this new era. She was, it turned out, a John the Baptist for the true messiah of conservative populism, waiting patiently and strategically for his time to come.""One of the more amazing episodes in Sarah Palin’s early political life, in fact, bears this out. She popped up in the Anchorage Daily News as “a commercial fisherman from Wasilla” on April 3, 1996. Palin had told her husband she was going to Costco but had sneaked into J.C. Penney in Anchorage to see … one Ivana Trump, who, in the wake of her divorce, was touting her branded perfume. “We want to see Ivana,” Palin told the paper, “because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture.”
dRump "was a cult of democratic aspiration. "
" In such a shame-free media environment, the assholes often win. In the end, you support them because they’re assholes.
Mass movements, he notes (as did Tocqueville centuries before him), rarely arise when oppression or misery is at its worst (say, 2009); they tend to appear when the worst is behind us but the future seems not so much better (say, 2016). It is when a recovery finally gathers speed and some improvement is tangible but not yet widespread that the anger begins to rise. After the suffering of recession or unemployment, and despite hard work with stagnant or dwindling pay, the future stretches ahead with relief just out of reach. When those who helped create the last recession face no consequences but renewed fabulous wealth, the anger reaches a crescendo."“It is usually those whose poverty is relatively recent, the ‘new poor,’ who throb with the ferment of frustration,” Hoffer argues."a subculture that is even more alienated and despised, and ever more infuriated and bloody-minded."
They smell the condescension and the broad generalizations about them — all of which would be repellent if directed at racial minorities — and see themselves, in Hoffer’s words, “disinherited and injured by an unjust order of things.”

And so they wait, and they steam, and they lash out. This was part of the emotional force of the tea party: "But the most powerful engine for such a movement — the thing that gets it off the ground, shapes and solidifies and entrenches it — is always the evocation of hatred. It is, as Hoffer put it, “the most accessible and comprehensive of all unifying elements.”
"At rallies, whenever a protester is hauled out, you can almost sense the rising rage of the collective identity venting itself against a lone dissenter and finding a catharsis of sorts in the brute force a mob can inflict on an individual."

Dick Cheney gave illegal orders to torture prisoners and coerced White House lawyers to cook up absurd “legal” defenses. Trump would make Cheney’s embrace of the dark side and untrammeled executive power look unambitious."

GREAT article by our friend Andrew Sullivan, Gryphen.

...Those who believe that Trump’s ugly, thuggish populism has no chance of ever making it to the White House seem to me to be missing this dynamic. Neo-fascist movements do not advance gradually by persuasion; they first transform the terms of the debate, create a new movement based on untrammeled emotion, take over existing institutions, and then ruthlessly exploit events. And so current poll numbers are only reassuring if you ignore the potential impact of sudden, external events — an economic downturn or a terror attack in a major city in the months before November. I have no doubt, for example, that Trump is sincere in his desire to “cut the head off” ISIS, whatever that can possibly mean. But it remains a fact that the interests of ISIS and the Trump campaign are now perfectly aligned. Fear is always the would-be tyrant’s greatest ally.

And though Trump’s unfavorables are extraordinarily high (around 65 percent), he is already showing signs of changing his tune, pivoting (fitfully) to the more presidential mode he envisages deploying in the general election. I suspect this will, to some fools on the fence, come as a kind of relief, and may open their minds to him once more. Tyrants, like mob bosses, know the value of a smile: Precisely because of the fear he’s already generated, you desperately want to believe in his new warmth. It’s part of the good-cop-bad-cop routine that will be familiar to anyone who has studied the presidency of Vladimir Putin.

With his appeal to his own base locked up, Trump may well also shift to more moderate stances on social issues like abortion (he already wants to amend the GOP platform to a less draconian position) or gay and even transgender rights. He is consistent in his inconsistency, because, for him, winning is what counts. He has had a real case against Ted Cruz — that the senator has no base outside ideological-conservative quarters and is even less likely to win a general election. More potently, Trump has a worryingly strong argument against Clinton herself — or “crooked Hillary,” as he now dubs her.

It's not 2008; Clinton is womping Sanders. She and Obama had a much closer race. Do you not recall this, or is math not your forte? @10:29

Actually, the FBI is not investigating her. They are checking to see if her e-mails were hacked. I am tempted to put a bunch of links up again, but you Berners and Trumpers don't read them. I've tried for weeks to explain it to you here. But you keep reading Paulites like HA Goodnan and getting aroused. Sad! You're so gullible!

      Sure thing 11:13, sure thing.

Funny that an immunity deal was granted to one of her staffers in exchange for cooperation. There will be more. Why an immunity deal if they are 'just checking to se if her emails were hacked'? Larf. How can you be so gullible to believe anything that comes out of team Clinton after decades of lying?

    Clinton outraises Sanders in April

...The April total marks the first time in 2016 that Clinton's campaign has outraised Sanders', and it comes at a moment when the Vermont senator's campaign is asserting that it will take the Democratic nomination fight all the way to the convention despite trailing significantly in the overall delegate count.

You should pay attention to the man who knows numbers. Of course Sanders still has a pathway to the nomination. A very narrow path, but it's there nonetheless: he can win the balance of the 2,026 pledged delegates needed to have the majority of pledged delegates by winning 64% of the remaining pledged delegates. So while math says it's difficult, math says it's not impossible no matter how much Clinton fans stomp their feet in rage that Sanders dares to do what Clinton did in 2008: finish the primary.

Sure, finish it, but don't mess up the July convention. Read Bump's excellent new piece in WaPo, linked above. He goes through all the imaginable iterations that are mathematically possible and it still adds up to a Bernie loss.

      Delete
    2. It's much more than "difficult." It's statistically improbable to such a degree that it's no surprise that many are asking why Sanders is continuing.

I suggest you look at Fivethirtyeight.com, as they understand election numbers better than Reich. Here is a snippet, from the article, A Sanders Comeback Would Be Unprecedented."

"The result is pretty striking: After the early days of the campaign, no underdog has ever won the Democratic nomination. A true come-from-behind victory would show up on this chart as a green line (winners) wandering above the 50 percent line (falling behind) before crossing back over (catching up) and veering toward the bottom of the chart. Instead, after the mad scramble for the first 10 percent of delegates, no candidate ever crosses over the 50 percent line. That is, the king stay the king. (Of course, there haven’t been that many Democratic primaries in the modern era, so I wouldn’t interpret this data as some type of iron-clad rule.)

The reason for this is pretty simple: Proportional allocation of delegates makes comebacks really, really hard. You can’t just notch wins in a string of states, as Sanders did in late March and early April. You have to start consistently trouncing your opponent by large margins in every contest. You need, well, a political revolution." ***

"Why has Sanders opted to stay in the race this long? Without a window into his campaign headquarters, I can only speculate. I suspect the uncertainty on the Republican side has bled over to media coverage of the Democrats, giving everyone the impression that a Sanders nomination is more likely than it really is. Beyond that, Sanders could be trying to pull Clinton, the de facto nominee, further to the left (though she’s pretty dang liberal already). Maybe he feels less responsibility to hold the Democratic Party together than previous runner-ups, having only joined it recently. Or, he may really just believe that Clinton is an unacceptable nominee, and won’t concede the race to her.

Whatever the reason, denying the delegate math does neither Sanders nor the Democratic Party much good. There are surely benefits to keeping a nominee accountable with a competitive race, but Team Bernie must argue that these pros outweigh the cons of a prolonged, increasingly negative campaign. It’s not really possible to tease out cause and effect here, but Clinton’s unfavorability ratings have risen substantially in the last several months. The “Bernie or bust” meme is almost surely an empty threat, but it remains to be seen how much of this Clinton enmity carries over to the general election."

That is a lot of writing to attempt to justify why you, a Hillary supporter, believe that Sanders supporters shouldn't get the opportunity to vote for their choice in upcoming primaries. Just like the DNC and Wasserface Shultz, ramming Hillary down everyone's throats. The DNC is an embarrassment.

I changed my mind. Why I’m not voting for Bernie in the Oregon primary

...1) After reading "America Has Never Been So Ripe for Tyranny" by Andrew Sullivan in NY Magazine it hit me like a gut punch to the stomach that Trump could win the election by changing his “act” enough to appeal to on-the-fence voters who couldn’t imagine an unhinged maniac as president even though they lean Republican and despise Hillary.

Jane Sanders emerges as Bernie's go-to messenger

Jane Sanders has emerged as her husband’s most prominent surrogate as the campaign fights against the momentum pushing Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton toward the nomination.

She has been an almost constant presence on television this week, exuding confidence in interviews across the three major cable networks and countering speculation about the campaign’s demise.

Her positive approach has worked to steer the campaign back on message, despite signals that the hard-pressed Bernie Sanders campaign may begin to shift focus to ensuring the Vermont senator's message is reflected in the party’s platform under Clinton.
