Instead of simply keeping terrorists from getting their hands on assault weapons, the Republicans would rather trample everybody's civil rights.

Courtesy of Vice News:

Congressional Republicans have a plan to prevent deadly attacks like the Orlando nightclub massacre from happening again: Give the FBI easy access to citizens' browsing history and email data without the hassle of having to obtain a warrant first.

Arizona Senator John McCain filed an amendment to the Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations Act on Monday night that would do exactly that, on the same day that many lawmakers voted against measures which would keep AR-15s out of the hands of potentially dangerous Americans.

"In the wake of the tragic massacre in Orlando, it is important our law enforcement have the tools they need to conduct counterterrorism investigations and track 'lone wolves'" McCain wrote in a statement.

To be clear in order to protect the modern misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment, the Republicans are willing to simply throw out the 4th Amendment.

If John McCain is such a bad ass war hero then why does he let the NRA treat him like their little prison bitch?

He let the Tundra Turd treat him like a little prison bitch, so why not the NRA.

Let's hope that the voters get rid of the garbage that is clogging the congress, so that some REAL legislation can be enacted.

My beef is still over the obsession with assault weapons when it's damn well clear that most gun deaths are due to hand guns.

Accidental deaths perhaps, esp if children, perhaps.11:47. But mass murders are almost inevitably high capacity long guns and you know that.

Follow the money. McCain has received almost $8,000,000 from the NRA. Explains everything.

Holy shit!!! The guy took the money? For his retirement? I thought his wife was already loaded! Is there any character to this small, ego-driven old man? Seriously - haven't seen a drop of 'character' in the man!

And, he is what is called a 'hero'? Hardly! He's a taker, liar, fraud, too old, needs to retire and has been a black mark on America that will go down in history in many very negative ways.

He has so many factual, ugly things out there against him - just check his history in Congress.

Plus, he's been married multiple times - left a wife because she had MS - picked Sarah Palin as his running mate and on and on.

I'm so happy President Obama and VP Biden beat the shit out of McCain and Palin. The biggest gift the majority voters in America gave themselves! Thank you, God!!

Screw that, 12:00! It's a direct violation of the 4th amendment!

And NO AMOUNT of national security threat should be able to over ride that!

Gryphen, you act like they know any amendments other than the 1st (I don't have to be PC ever) and the 2nd (Everyone must own many guns).

I highly doubt that half of the republicans have even read the constitution. And I'm sure only a quarter of those understood it.

  7. No law is going to keep terrorists from getting guns. No mental check will stop some guy from going nuts years down the road. Even if we ban guns and/or confiscate all the guns, they will still get guns. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Many of these guys are quite stupid. The Orlando killer got his legally. He was even an armed security guard with gun training. The FBI did investigate him, but we have free speech in this country, so he can say whatever he wants and that won't allow us to take his guns away. That makes our whole country a soft target.
A well regulated militia, is not an individual. But I'm not a member of the Supreme Court. Even liberals accept the individual right, they just want to put regulations on it.

Stop being an idiot with a straw man argument TOM. No one said ban all guns ever. We said reduce thw availability and easy access, which will reduce the violence. Affirmative And repeatrf psych evaluations for gun owners. Insurance required and proof for a gun to change hands. Confiscation search if you can't prove sale. Perhaps escrow when one purchases a gun to cover loss. Mandatory training.

Tom you forgot the rest of it:

"the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

      Fixed it for you.

You are right, you are not a member of the Supreme Court.

I'm no Supreme either, but there is long history of defining and refining the meaning of many of the words in these amendments.

The legislation under consideration doesn't infringe on anyone's right to keep and bear arms - they just set forth reasonable criteria.

For example, convicted felons are prohibited from owning guns. On paper.

Our most basic human rights have been quashed by the relentless greed of the NRA (aka Gun Manufacturers Lobby)

The Founding Fthers could not have forseen the the future, with automatic weapons. The latest weapons should NEVER have been made available to ordinary citizens, only the military. The only use for these wepons is for killing people. Nobody could hunt with them, there would not be enough animal left to harvest the meat. Lumpy little Johnny should fade off into the sunset. I hope he loses, big time. His flabby little arse needs to go back to Arizona, or somewhere other than DC.

So what would having access to Web history do? If they've visited ISIS sites, then no guns, but what if their history is all Free Republic, Storm Front, Tea Party, etc. Do they get a gun? What if they visit anti-Planned Parenthood sites? Or what if their web history is all in Arabic because that's their first language, do they get guns?

I still don't see why to the GOP that when it comes to amendments 1+4 < 2.

So Paul Ryan doesn't want to ban people on the no fly list from buying guns because it would violates their right to due process. Can't wait to see Paul on the floor of the house denouncing McCain's proposal for violating due process, also. HAH! HAH! HAH! I crack myself up.

      From the article you cited:

"One thing wasn't quite so black and white though. Because homicides of all kinds (not just shootings) have been on the decline since 1996, the team can’t statistically say for sure that gun laws were the catalyst that caused gun-related murders to drop."

Lisa Murkowski voted NO on cloture of the amendment filibuster; Dan Sullivan first voted NO and then changed his vote to YES.
Message to them all: protect the 4th Amendment with the same aggressive attitude you protect the 2nd.
Mitch McConnell voted NO on cloture, just so he would be on the prevailing side and be able to bring it back up.
Diane Feinstein wasn't there to vote, but given her posture on the Intelligence Committee she might vote for cloture when it comes up again.
Alaskan? Call Sullivan's office and ask why he changed his vote, and why he feels the 4th Amendment belongs under the bus.

McCain has never been a 'hero' to me! Ever! I find the man totally despicable with one huge ego - typical of a little man!

Do these male Republicans in Congress really think they are 'untouchable' as to their reelections? They certainly appear to think that way in putting out these asinine directives in Congress!

McCain IS currently up for reelection in AZ. Hopefully, the majority of voters in the state kick him out of Congress, sending him home to his rich wife to retire in one of her homes...never to be heard from again!

He "graduated" 895th out of a class of 899!! Then he went to flight school, because his daddy and grandpa were high ranking naval officers. They would be ashamed if they saw what he has done with his life after all their help. They should have left him to face his own failures.

He never should have been allowed to pilot anything after his first crash. I'm certain anyone else crashing a plane in training (or five) would have been booted from the program..not John Boy.

I would love to hear from the other 789 out of his class of 795 that ranked higher than him. I'm sure it would put him in a worse light. I also wonder if the 4 that where ranked lower than him went into politics.

you USED to be a maverick, a hero.

When was he a maverick? He should have gone down years ago for his part in the Keating 5 scandal. He escaped that, just like he escaped being held accountable for what he did while a POW. He has never been held accountable for his multiple wives either. The Bible waving GOP seems to love their white male cheaters, don't they? Next he'll be supporting torture.

This man doesn't have a leg to stand on. His choice of VP pick was an epic failure. To put it bluntly, placing our nation under the possible peril of having the mentally ill former mayor of Wasilla take over as POTUS was, in itself an act of desperation from the mind of a very sick man. He's had more than enough time to beg forgiveness, and has done nothing but tease Miss Lindsey. Hope he loses his seat. or resigns.

John McCain knows how to create so called 'war heroes' and mythology, it is pretty much an industry for the old cancerous growth.

McCain's entire life of politics is and was bought and paid for by the mob, crooked financeers, NRA and the like. He is postitioned to see things move in their directions or else to be certain things get blocked for them. Notice what went on with the Palins. McCain did and does his best for them.

McCain did vet Sarah, he just chose to do the worst, most pathetic job of vetting possible. He went with the lies. He works for the lowest snakes and crime families on the planet. It's the same old John McCain. People have barely started to learn the truth about the demonic McCain.
