Democratic convention night three open thread. Update!

Tonight's speakers include Jesse Jackson, Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Gavin Newsom, Martin O'Malley, Jerry Brown, Chris Murphy, actress Sigourney Weaver (I love her.), Gabby Giffords, Sherrod Brown, Michael Bloomberg, Tim Kaine, and of course President Obama to close out the night.

I am not expecting any huge surprises or disruptions tonight but it should be quite entertaining.

After all it features one of the greatest President's in our lifetime.

Jesse Jackson: "It's Hillary time!"
Apparently yesterday Andrew Sullivan, a longtime critic of Hillary Clinton, had already reached that decision as well:

Some readers think I’ve been too negative, even cynical, tonight. Believe me, I am utterly uncynical about this election. I’m worried sick. We need to put behind us any lingering beefs, any grudges, any memories from the past – and you know how I feel about the Clintons’ past – in order to save liberal democracy. The only thing between him and us is her. So – against all my previous emphatic denials – I’m with her now. As passionately as I ever was with Obama. For his legacy is at stake as well.

Now somebody needs to go tell those butt hurt Bernie supporters that.

Update: Powerful words from the mother of a victim from the Orlando shooting.
This is just one of the many pro-gun control speeches being delivered tonight.

Update 2: Here he comes.

Everybody loves Joe.

Update 3: And finally the grand finale.

Best President ever!

Update 4: Does not require comment.

The woman that just spoke about her Mom. Sandy Hook; the principal's daughter. Short and succinct. Keep preaching it; my heart goes out to ALL who have lost family members in such senseless violence. I don't care what side you're on.

  2. Wow. Such powerful remarks from Erica Smegielski (daughter of Sandy Hook principal); "I would give all the days I have left for one more day with my mother."

Gun control is just ONE of the areas where we need Hillary Clinton's strength.

OK Gryphen, stop with the "butt hurt bernie bots" theme. They're a small section of the greater Bernie supporters group who for the most part is going to vote for fucking Hillary. It just makes you sound really petty and does not elevate the tone of your blog one bit. Bernie was excellent. His campaign floated trial balloons-ideas-and identified a mostly youthful electorate that cannot be ignored. Bernie was excellent for this campaign also because he took the Republican focus off of Hillary. Actually Trump did that by focusing on denigrating his fellow Republicans!

Democrats were lucky that he chose the Republican party. He's obviously not a Republican and today we found out that he is a traitor.

He's working to bring us Wisconsin. We'll also need Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan. Those are the four that Michael Moore has identified as vulnerable and all that Trump needs to win.

So yes, stop with the Bernie Bashing already. It is getting really tedious.

You want Hillary to win? Go bash the Trump supporters. The negative rhetoric has gone on beyond tedious weeks ago.

Take a page from Hillary, Kaine, Warren, Franken, Reid and the rest and MOVE ON. Just shut up about Bernie and his supporters.

For all Gryphen knows, the Bernie Bros were Putin/Trump Bots.

He's never acknowledged that Bernie Supporters have a right to be outraged over some of the thing that the DNC did to undermine Bernie.

"Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the outgoing Democratic National Committee chair, didn’t treat Sen. Bernie Sanders fairly during the primaries and should have resigned sooner.

Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, made his comments in response to a question about whether his party had a Plan B if something truly disqualifying emerged about Hillary Clinton in future email dumps.

“No,” he told The Huffington Post, but went on to talk about the DNC communications released so far in what appears to be a Russian-orchestrated hack.

“Debbie Wasserman Schultz, she’s always been good to me. I like her just fine,” Reid said. “I know she’s tried hard, but as some people probably know, I thought Bernie deserved somebody that was not critical to[ward] him. I knew ― everybody knew ― that this was not a fair deal. So I’m sorry she had to resign, but it was the right thing to do. She just should’ve done it sooner.”

As DNC chair, Wasserman Schultz had scheduled many of the primary debates on weekends, when viewership was likely to be lower. Without the opportunity to debate in front of large audiences, it’s difficult for an insurgent candidate to gain traction against an established rival.

“Bernie really had a movement out there, and it wasn’t right to treat him that way,” Reid said."

'You know what, I’ve had it up to my goddamned eyeballs with these petulant, perpetual college freshman booing and chanting. Tape all your damned mouths until you’re ready to use them for something useful.

I’m a lifelong solid Democrat. A stereotypical one even. Skeptical of patriotism and the greatness of America. I went into this convention very lukewarm on Hillary. I was voting for her, but primarily because when the choice is a neo-fascist or not a fascist, you choose not a fascist. That’s your damned duty as an American.

But after the last few days, watching these bozos push their whiny lips out and shout down and boo decent people who have worked for decades to make this country better, I’m 100% with her. I’m fully on board. And it was that petulant attitude of the Bernie diehards that did it. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this patriotic. It’s my duty–all of our duties–to keep this fascist buffoon out of the Oval Office. And that the Bernie-or-busters and the craven GOP enablers of Trump can’t see that, or feel that, or understand that, makes me incensed. I will not let them pout or pander us into armbands. No fucking way.'

The Democratic Party needs the youth vote.

You're not going to get it by calling them spoiled, entitled brats, disparaging their choices and criticizing their involvement. (Just because they didn't crown your queen.)

You're going to need the votes of those stinky pampered bastards and you're not going to get it by continuing your fucking hissy fit.

Tim Kaine knows it. Joe Biden knows it. Barack Obama knows it. And I'm sure in her speech Hillary Clinton will show she knows it too.

So sorry the Bernie Supporters didn't get over their outrage of being screwed over by DWS and the DNC fast enough to suit you panty sniffers. They're human. They're entitled to be pissed at what was done. They'll get over it faster than you assholes. They'll be the adults in the room and you'll still be the petulant brats that still can't get over the fact that Bernie made Hillary work for every vote.

Obama, Biden, Clinton, Kaine, they've all moved on. In fact, they've acknowledged what sticks in your craw. That Bernie contributed to a party he isn't even a member of and he will continue to do so.

Bernie will attack Trump where it hurts. Bernie will be working to get Hillary elected. While all you assholes will work to undermine her by discouraging the youth vote and dividing rather than uniting the party. As much as I enjoyed my yearly trips and most of the people who were involved, I was way too much of a Yankee liberal to be able to live in the deep south.

Obama’s Speech Wednesday Is About More Than Electing Hillary Clinton

It’s also about defending his own legacy.

...By any reasonable standard, he has been the most successful Democratic president in a generation, and maybe for longer than that. He has signed into law more pieces of meaningful progressive legislation than any president since Lyndon Johnson ― and he did so without the benefit of Johnson’s huge congressional majorities, and without the stain of something like Vietnam on his legacy.

But Reagan, Johnson, FDR ― they enacted policy changes that outlasted their tenures and, in so doing, they helped change public expectations about what government should or shouldn’t do.

If Obama wants to join the ranks of those lofty predecessors, he must complete one final task. He has to make sure that Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump, becomes president ― an effort that begins in earnest when Obama speaks at the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night.

If you're going to undermine one of your candidates or violate your own rules (or campaign finance law) you should not leave any trace. You need no proof in case you are caught. No voice mails, e-mails or paper trail at all. Verbal instructions in secure locations only.

So sorry for the lack of ethics and morals from our Democratic Party Leadership.

Perhaps they should ALL step down.

I just wish a good investigative journalist, or the FBI, would start delving into Trump's Russian connection. I remember back in the early 1950's when the GOP was all about looking for "fellow travelers" and Russian spies. My God, one of them is now running for president and not one Republican and no one in the mainstream media has had the courage to speak out about it. Trump's behavior and his underlings' Russian connections should have been daily editorial fodder for every newspaper and television news program all week long.

    Gryphen,

As a former Bernie supporter, I'd like to add more to your post. Here is Andrew Sullivan's final entry to his live blog from DNC Night #3 - it's brilliant:

"11:41 p.m. It’s been a long and entirely unexpected journey with this extraordinary figure (Obama). I’ve doubted and panicked, I’ve hyper-ventilated and wept, I’ve worried and persevered. We did a lot of that together, you and me. But I have one thing to say: he never let us down. He kept his cool, he kept his eyes on the prize, he never embarrassed and almost always lifted us up. He is a living, walking example of American exceptionalism, of why this amazing country can still keep surprising the world.

Readers know how I feel about the Clintons. But this is not about them or me. It’s about an idea of America that is under siege and under attack from a foul, divisive, dangerous demagogue. If you backed Obama, there is no choice in this election but Clinton. This is not a election to seek refuge in a third party or to preen in purist disdain from the messy, often unsatisfying duties of politics. It is an election to keep the America that Obama has helped bring into being, and the core democratic values that have defined this experiment from the very beginning: self-government, not rule by a strongman; pluralism and compassion rather than nativism and fear; an open embrace of the world, and not a terrified flight from it.

But you know what Obama gave us tonight? He gave some of us hope. Again. That’s what he does. And we will never see his like again."

There is no one who gives a speech quite like President Obama.

Contrasted with the fear and acrimony of last week's convention, tonight's address overflowed with optimism, hope and pride for what this nation has accomplished by working together as a people, and what we can continue to accomplish if we elect Hillary.

Like a skilled stage actor, his voice would soar with emotion one moment and drop to an impassioned whisper the next, with the audience hanging on every word. He is so good at knowing exactly when to pause so as not to speak over applause or audience response as many of the other speakers did.

I found myself in tears by the end, not only for the emotions and pride he inspired, but for the awareness that our time with this amazing man in office is quickly coming to a close. I am so grateful to have experienced this presidency in my lifetime and to have had the privilege of helping to put Barack Obama in the White House.

And they want to give Donald briefings on our National Security on friday? That guy is a loose cannon. We don't need to pal up to Russia. Putin is not a friend to our country. He's a thug that has manipulated his country for his interest. He's playing Donald like a screechy tune. We've come 240 years into this country's lifespan, and we don't need to be taken out by some idiot with so much pride, all he can talk about is himself. And where did he get the idea that he alone could save us? Save us from what? He's instigating the whole violence thing, and the Russians are probably planting all the bullshit to help him. Every two bit dictator is watching and licking their chops towards our country and the so called Republicans are helping him by their complicity. One VERY important thing to know about Putin is that he (supposedly a public servant) is now richer than the wealthiest Russian oligarchs who made their money following the breakup of the Soviet Union and the privatization of Russia's resources. And he made him self rich through bribes and corruption of the highest order, while maintaining strict control of the media. Russia, which is now suffering because of all these machinations, would like nothing better than for NATO to break up and for Putin to gain control of the Baltic states, along with Ukraine. I'm positive that he sees Trump as a mere puppet whose strings he can pull at will. Besides Trump's campaign director Paul manafort, who has direct ties to Putin, as well as Trump's financial dependence on Russian finances, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Putin is indeed interfering in the US election. It's scary for the US, and it's equally scary for US allies around the world. You Democrats must to everything in your power to ensure that Hillary Clinton becomes your next President.

Loved President Obama's speech. I think the reason he is such a powerful speaker is because he doesn't take himself seriously. Sometimes the other side tries to discredit his authenticity but they end up looking petty. I liked that he said "Don't boo, vote".

Too late now. Just like Sarah Palin, Donald Trump should have stayed in the gutters and in the back alleys. Those two have hurt a lot of people but we can all find comfort knowing America stomped on their faces and now their slimy lifes are damaged for eternity.

And they want to give Donald briefings on our National Security on friday? That guy is a loose cannon.

I was thinking the same thing. This guy cannot keep his mouth closed. He is a loose cannon. I wish Congress would hold a special hearing about limiting what is disclosed to Trump. He cannot be trusted. I know if Congress held a special hearing regarding limiting his Security Briefings it would not pass since the Republicans currently controls Congress.

In his speech earlier in the evening, Harry Reid pointed out that Donald Trump and his vicious diatribe of an acceptance speech at his personal RNC lovefest last week is the direct result of the heinous and vicious fear mongering of Sen. Mitch McConnell and the GOP majority in the Congress today. They, ever since President Obama won the election in 2008, with the money of billionaires like Adelson and the Koch brothers have created the monster who is the GOP nominee for president, Donald Trump. I was thrilled to hear Harry Reid blame the GOP itself for their wanton disregard of law, of decency, and of all American values.

Harry Reid will be missed and I'm so sorry that he was injured so badly in his fall late last year. He is clearly weakened with difficulty walking and seeing. He has served the country and the Democratic Party well and we will all miss him as he retires from the Senate. If you missed his speech, look for it on the internet. It is well worth hearing or reading.

Off Topic, but it explains a lot about Donald and his hair fetish. Appears to be genetic.

Why does Cokie Roberts hate Hillary?

This morning I heard her state, there is a focus group that shows Hillary is not comfortable with her grandchildren.

I couldn’t believe my ears, is there a focus group that asks if Traitor Trump is comfortable with his grandchildren?

They sure are scraping the bottom of the barrel for ways to insult Hillary, makes me admire Hillary even more.

I am still waiting for the source of this poll that shows she is untrustworthy that they keep yakking about. Were was it taken the RNC headquarters?
