Night Two of the Democratic Convention Open Thread. Update!

I thought I better post this thread earlier today and a whole lot of interesting stuff happened before last night's open thread.

Here are some of the featured speakers for tonight:

President Bill Clinton headlines the convention Tuesday..

Other featured speakers include mothers who lost their children to gun violence such as Eric Garner's mother, Gwen Carr; Trayvon Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton; and Michael Brown's mother, Lezley McSpadden.

Other speakers will include former Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who will speak about the Americans with Disabilities Act, which he helped craft and pass in Congress.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe will also address the convention. He served as chairman of President Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection campaign and chairman of Hillary Clinton's first presidential campaign in 2008.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, will be speaking as well as Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, who served with Clinton in the Senate and who's expected to succeed Harry Reid as the Democrats' next leader in the Senate.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder is scheduled to speak as well as Planned Parenthood Action Fund President Cecile Richards and actors Tony Goldwyn, America Ferrara, and Lena Dunham.

Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as secretary of state, will speak and former President Jimmy Carter is expected to make an appearance in a video message to the convention.

Damn! So you see why we need to post this early.

As promised here is my second favorite speech from last night:

I love Al Franken as a Senator, but Al Franken the comedian is pretty damn awesome as well.

There is also a rumor that Bernie Sanders will officially nominate Hillary Clinton tonight, so I imagine we will see more of this:

Oh joy.

Update: Hillary Clinton, the first female presidential candidate to represent a major party, has just officially hit the magic number of delegates to become the nominee.  Another history making day for the Democratic party.

Update 2: Sanders just officially named Hillary Clinton the nominee by acclimation.

And THAT makes it really official.

Update 3: Apparently this happened earlier tonight as well.
Didn't Frankenstein have to chase his creation into the farthest reaches of the north to finally end its existence?

Good speech. Funny yet dead on. I listened to so much of the Republican's plus that fraud Donald my mind started to get into a dark place. Good to hear optimism. The Donald is sending dark vibes our way, and Putin is licking his chops. Please America vote for Hillary. We have to save our country from Putin. He's trying to get in the back door through Trump and Palin.

My sister is a retired pediatrician from the town of Willmar, MN which Al Franken acknowledged as he gave the graduation exercise speech there this year and exemplified their assimilation of both Latino and Somali cultures. She had a large Somali client base of mothers that did not speak English. They never had a problem communicating and the Somali women made sure she was their pediatrician of choice! He didn't dare put anything anti her on his twitter. For once he knew when to keep his fucking mouth shut! But, he did it for himself (once again) and not her! He knew better!!

In one of the stories about Sarah Palin, one of her friends remember Sarah dreaming of the White House when she was Mayor of Wasilla. It would have been an easy route, coming in the back door as vice president. She could campaign by serving cold salmon to the neocon cruise folks. She could drop hints all over the internet. She and her family wrote letters of admiration to all of the Alaska media, thanks Lou Sarah and Louise Heath. Sorry, Sarah. That close. If only that 72 year old guy with a history of cancer had won. Who knows where you could have been today? Instead, she wasn't even invited to the Republican convention in 2012 and again in 2016. How the mighty have fallen. Or maybe there never was anything there to start with. Running for President is really not the same thing as having Miss Wasilla show up in the Miss Alaska contest.

There is such an amazing diversity among the delegates: Hispanic, African American, caucasian, Native American, and, this year, the delegation from the Northern Marianas with their beautiful flowers. I had a feeling this would be the outcome. (I think it happened waaaay before Sarah Silverman said to the "Bernie or Bust" crowd that they're looking ridiculous. How long has Bernie been in Vermont? Why isn't college free there? Single payer? A flat tax, perhaps?
But enough about that, I never dreamed in my entire life I'd see an African American President, a Polish Pope, or a Woman President. My daughters and future grandkids will know that anything's possible if you work hard for it. What a night!!!

This is a huge problem beyond the convention bump. If the DNConvention does not give a sizeable bump to Clinton, she is going to lose this election when she had a formidable lead. I'm talking any number of states here where it's going to make a difference
I am not speaking for myself but the trend I am seeing. I'm not happy with the choice of speakers and the way a lot of The democratic supporters are and am finding myself at the brink. The ugly truth about the White House and its history of slavery

Michelle Obama's speech during the first day of the Democratic National Convention was generally lauded.

One sentence in particular garnered more attention, and controversy, than the rest:

That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done so that today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.

The mention of slavery was a stark reminder for those who may have forgotten the White House's disturbing history or for those whose associate the iconic home with freedom and not the misery created in its absence.

Clarence Lusane, author of "The Black History of the White House," isn't one of those people.

The chair of Howard University's Political Science Department, Lusane has done extensive research on the enslaved people who built the structure and later lived among 10 of the United States' first 12 presidents.

He called the first lady's comment a "pivotal moment" in U.S. history.

Sarah Palin was a no nothing governor that didn't even know what the VP does who had to have everyone else do the actual work (even prepare those cookies) for her. She had a special needs infant and a pregnant teenage daughter at home in 2008 that should've taken priority over the $ signs in her eyes. It's been clear these last 8 years that her kids are not her top priority, just look at Trig with his front missing teeth for several years and the inability to eat solid foods or speak much because she was off flitting around to fill her pockets with OPM, or opium as she likes to say, rather than making sure he got therapy. Look at her other kids, getting in brawls, 3 more kids out of wedlock, getting arrested etc. Sarah Palin isn't out there trying to fix things for people, she's out there to say outrageous things to get attention in the hopes of getting a reality show. I for one would rather have someone running the country that lives in actual reality and not in a show. Sarah Palin doesn't speak for me, not as a woman, not as a mother and certainly not as a citizen of the United States.

California you should be ashamed of your delegates!

"... the California delegation is the convention’s largest, with more than 500 members...."

    Yahoo:
California’s Bernie holdouts are being even more ‘ridiculous’ than their counterparts from other states. Here’s why.

    Andrew RomanoJuly 26, 2016

PHILADELPHIA — “Governor Brown! We challenge the votes!” a young Bernie Sanders superfan in a black T-shirt and dark glasses shouted at California Gov. Jerry Brown as he tried to announce the results of the June 7 California primary during Tuesday’s roll call here at the Democratic National Convention. “We challenge the votes!”
Hillary Clinton, of course, won both the California primary and the nomination. Sanders lost.
“Continuing to scream isn’t going to change anything,” someone in the scrum replied, pointing this out.

“We want the votes recounted!” the Bernie guy yelled.
“We heard you,” his critic said.
A chant of “Hillary! Hillary!” rippled through the delegation, drowning out any remaining dissent.
Sanders supporters have hardly stayed silent in Philadelphia. Rowdy pockets of Bernie or Bust die-hards spent yesterday afternoon loudly booing the mere mention of Clinton’s name.
But the California delegation has been the loudest, rowdiest, and, as Sarah Silverman would put it, most “ridiculous” of all. And the fact that dissent persisted until the roll call — it had already fizzled out pretty much everywhere else — only reinforced the perception that Sanders’ supporters in California are less interested in party unity than their peers in other states.
So why are these Californians determined to stir the pot?

Sory, but when a sitting president, VP, or ret. Pres are going to speak it is the secret service that locks the place down so much time ahead of them speaking and after.
Apparently this group hasn't been too involved in the political area if they were so unaware.
Sometimes in life when you have your hissy fits and stomp out you just can't be surprised if your Mommy isn't there to let you back in. But since they had their roll of tape so handy it seems to me they planned to walk out when they wouldn't be able to get back in.

What a sad little group of unattractive, overweight, poorly-dressed millennials.

Everyone there knew that if you left you couldn't get back for security reasons. This group has wanted exceptions made for them for too long. They need to learn to play by the rules.

Trump campaign manager: Women will vote for Trump because their husbands can't afford their bills

"It depends on which women you're talking about," Manafort said. "Many women in this country feel they can't afford their lives. Their husbands can't afford paying for the family bills."

No, wait, really, Chris Matthews said. You know we're on television right fucking now, right?

"You said women are concerned about their husbands' income?" Matthews pressed.
Manafort grinned. "I can speak personally to that," he replied.

"Ha ha ha, my wife is a money-grubbing shrew! But seriously, the womminfolks love Donald."

What I would like to think of as our Response:

Cecile Richards Makes A Devastating Promise To Donald Trump At Democratic Convention

“Well, Donald Trump, come November, women are going to be more than an inconvenience,” Richards said to coming cheers, “We’re going to be the reason you’re not elected!”

I am disturbed that AL Franken wants women to leave their 4 year old and 8 year old home alone so mommy can campaign for HRC. (Starting at about 6:15) In my state, it is illegal to leave children 8 and under home alone. I am sure mom's of small children could contribute to the campaign without ignoring their family.
