The Late Show features the best Melania Trump impersonator ever, and the Trump campaign finally got a scapegoat for "speech-gate."

I actually think that speech would have gone over better than the one that Melania actually gave.

In other news the Trumps have thrown some woman named Meredith McIver under the bus as the bitch who wrote those plagiarized portions of Melania's speech.

Here is her Everipedia page, which totally does not look like it was thrown together in a hurry.

(Some are even wondering if a Meredith McIver actually exists.)

Interestingly enough if this is all true it may cause a completely different problem.

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

But there's another problem. Notice the letterhead of the statement: The Trump Organization, which is to say Donald Trump's personal business. And notice how McIver describes herself: As an employee of the Trump Organization, not the campaign.

If Trump used corporate resources to write a political speech, that could be illegal.

"On the face of it, this looks like a corporate violation," explained Lawrence Noble, general counsel for the Campaign Legal Center. And that is "a violation of federal law. It can result in civil penalties to the corporation and the campaign." If the campaign used corporate resources "willingly and knowingly," the offense is a criminal one.

Anybody need a refill on popcorn?

  1. Anonymous4:17 PM

Wish her wig had kept falling forward. Melanie got no hairline or forehead.

    1. Anonymous9:39 PM

I don't know if it's a wig or not but it's a strange look. The Trumps all seem to have hair that is too far down on their foreheads. Kind of like neanderthals. Coincidence? I think not.

    2. Anonymous10:15 PM

LOL, I have a lower hairline. And yet, my dna pegs me below average in terms of my proud neanderthal heritage.

I do think people are attracted to a version of themselves. Of course, it's not like that with my 200x cousin, Mel T. I would say the only attraction is money and I don't even want to try to imagine how she has had to pay and pay and pay because of the mega-puke-production factor.

    3. I say lay off her. Melania has apologized (her speech writer, Meredith McIver has). Melania’s not running, either, her husband is. Meredith McIver might have plagiarized Michelle Obama’s speech, but this isn’t speech class. Melania Trump (or Meredith McIver) might have exercised some poor, poor judgment, appropriating (well, to you) an experience that she never lived through, but did she really do that, make someone else’s experience her own because she used THAT someone else’s words? “Give me liberty or give me death” was an exclamation by Patrick Henry, but it’s still true, isn’t it? So why can’t I cite it (with no attribution) even if it captures exactly how I feel about democracy? Plus, aren’t we missing Melania’s point? Melania had been a Slovenian, a stranger, finding life in the United States through an arduous process of immersion, assimilation and education—enduring, I reckon, all those sharp stares from natives that even Michelle Obama, a native, would have endured. It isn’t her fault that Donald Trump fell in love with her. Last, her speech writer had approved her speech—shouldn’t that have given her enough of the bona fides? Melania wasn’t in it for academicians, but to make her husband look good during the GOP convention; a carnival that we all now condemn, but admit it—by apologizing, Melania and Meredith McIver JUST HUMANIZED it and gave substance to it (as Trump’s staff scrambled for the most evasive answer it could husband), and by being honest enough to say Melania admired Michelle Obama so that “you just must put this, Meredith, it’s very good.” Academists would give Melania an “F” for cribbing Michelle Obama’s speech, but I say give her a second chance.

Forget Mr. Trump’s apologists— it was they who showed lack of character with their My-Little-Pony act and sarcasm like “if we were going to crib a speech, why crib Michelle—why not Nancy Reagan?,” as if cribbing Mrs. Reagan would have been the more conservative thing to do than cribbing Michelle. The First Lady doesn’t belong to any political party; she belongs to the White House household. Remember Maria Shriver?

No, WE had been the racists. We liked to laugh at Melania because she’s a “stranger,” who “would close the door that let her in,” for no reason other than because she’s Mrs. Trump. But we don’t know that. She likes Michelle Obama, for one, and adored that cribbed passage. In either case, so what? The owner, Michelle, hasn’t complained. Quite the reverse, I’m sure she’s delighted.

Today, Melania and Meredith McIver just sent everybody upstairs, to their room. Shamed us. And that includes me.

    4. Anonymous5:19 AM

Oh please, you should be a paid apologist for the Trump campaign. I mean it, really. I'm sure God just put some gold stars on your chart.

  2. Anonymous4:19 PM

Jail him! Jail him! Jail him!
Get Christie to hold court and pronounce Trump Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!

    1. Anonymous1:02 AM

      Shame. Shame. Shame. LOL!

  3. Anonymous4:23 PM

The FEC needs to grow some balls and penalize the Trump Campaign! What does this make now? Two illegal activities? Asking foreign countries for donations and now this. Ignorance of the law is no excuse!!

    1. Anonymous5:00 PM

But it sure gives you confidence in a future Trump administration.

  4. Anonymous4:24 PM

But I thought Melanoma wrote the speech herself?

    1. Anonymous5:21 AM

Exactly. Either Melania is a liar or she plagiarized. She can't have it both ways.

  5. Anonymous4:25 PM

The video is hilarious. The letter from the speech writer is nonsense.

    1. Anonymous6:50 PM

In my opinion, Meredith McIver aka Donald Trump. Trump and Manafort are probably part of the mafia with their dishonest and bullying tactics.

    2. Anonymous4:51 PM

I find it interesting they found some low level, unknown WOMAN to be the fall guy. Since when would this McIver be given the sensitive and important task of writing Melania's speech.

I also find it interesting that some other guy in the campaign already said *he* wrote it.

I hope they follow through with legal indictments so the campaign can walk it back again and say no, McIver didn't write the speech and then give us another head on a platter.

They're all liars, cheaters and thieves.

    3. Anonymous9:38 PM

Meredith McIver is a real person.

Did she write Melania's speech? I doubt it. She apparently ghostwrites books for Trump but that's a different skill than speech writing. No, someone on his staff fucked up and McIver is taking the fall. She's a Democrat so she's probably had enough and is ready to leave as long as she gets a big, fat, golden parachute, which I'm sure she will providing she signs that non-disclosure and takes the fall.

  6. Trump et al. will slither out of this illegal charge, if proved, just like Palin and her spawn do. Cynical? you bet.
Who's pulling strings for these people? not those of justice or fair play.

  7. Anonymous4:31 PM

I'm loving this plagiarism scandal, it distils every personal failing of Donald Trump into just a few very common platitudes that he won't be able to use ever again without causing widespread sniggering.

  8. Anonymous4:39 PM

Trump jetted back to Cleveland today, but Melanoma didn't. I guess Cleveland doesn't rock for her. Trump thanked his kids for the great speeches, but never mentioned Melanoma. Ouch!

    1. Anonymous4:56 PM

      Baron had the sniffles.

    2. Anonymous6:03 PM

Yeah, same old story about needing to be there for Barron. Of course she'll show up for her hubby tomorrow, but it would have been decent of her to show up today, even if she flew in alone this evening and could avoid the big group that that happened earlier today. I mean, it looks good to have the two candidates and their spouses as a foursome in some pics on the veep's big night (and later the veep's family joins him on stage after the speech).

    3. Anonymous6:36 PM

Did Baron have a case of the sads because daddy told mommy that after the election she's fired?

  9. Anonymous4:41 PM

Colbert and Laura Benanti have created a classic! Loved the SNLish ending, too!

    1. Anonymous6:44 PM

Sheer genius! Laura Benanti is a huge Broadway star & has a devoted (and deserved!) following!!!

    2. Anonymous4:53 PM

Is that who it is? She's brilliant.

Wonder if she'll be guesting on SNL.

Imagine her, Tina Fey and whoever their current Hillary impersonator are, all together doing a The View type thing. It would be hilarious.

  10. Anonymous4:46 PM

Didn't McIver say she offered her resignation? Where was she resigning from?

  11. Anonymous4:55 PM

His whole campaign is illegal. Using the Trump jet and Sikorsky helicopter is the tip of the a Trump Organization iceberg. The kids are still on Trump salary. At least Mitt's sons took leaves of absence from their jobs.

  12. Anita Winecooler5:04 PM

The video clip was perfect, but I gotta say, Caitlyn wore it better and with much more class. Trump is running one of the worse campaigns I've ever seen. His spokesman said Melania is fluent in five languages and can speak to world leaders in their own tongue. Is "Stupid" a "language"??
The best part of all this is they've exposed themselves as people who will do anything to win. Even hanging his wife out for almost two days.
Not buying the McGuiver story one bit. If he lies about little things, imagine the big things.
So glad he's not going to be president.

    1. Anonymous5:43 PM

Can you guarantee that he's not going to be President, Anita? I used to think so too but this country has some pretty stupid know-nothings and unfortunately they vote.

    2. Anonymous5:56 PM

      I'm with you, 5:43 PM.

    3. Anita Winecooler6:10 PM

You're right, I just can't imagine that many people voting against their own interests.

    4. Anonymous5:24 AM

What do you mean "if he lies about the little things, what about the big things?" HE LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING!

  13. Anonymous5:23 PM

I just can't believe that Trump put her up there to be ridiculed. That accent, the "trophy Visa wife" thing is just too funny and she certainly isn't an example of "Making America Great Again".

What? That woman could barely order from a menu written in English if her life depended on it!

    1. Anonymous5:59 PM

She's like the person working at McDonalds, late at night, when you are totally buzzed, just driving around and wanting some food and they don't even grasp the language enough to get your order correct.

    2. Anonymous6:00 PM

I wish I could feel sorry for Melania but I am sure the gilded house and furniture and bank account will soften this plagiarism tragedy.
How come people get kicked out of college for what she did?

How do these people get away with threatening people?

    Andrew Sullivan live blogs RNC:

'9:02 p.m. An obscure pastor is now ranting phrases from the Constitution. In previous conventions, we would now be listening to a senator, or former president, or up-and-coming political star. This is amateur hour. But I wonder if this is deliberate. The goal is to destroy politics as we have known it and turn it into an entertainment spectacle that appeals to those who feel left out, ignored or condescended to. You can relate to these C-listers in a way you couldn’t to the pols or Hollywood A-listers of the past. And so the general vibe is that the elite Bastille has been seized.'

  15. Anonymous5:33 PM

...Despite working for Donald Trump who is the presidential nominee for the Republican Party, Meredith is a registered Democrat. She has ghost written several books for Donald Trump

...There is a conspiracy theory that McIver included the plagiarism on purpose to sabotage Trump. Further evidence is that a line from Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" - often used on the Internet for prank Rickrolling - was included in the speech. The line was: “He will never, ever give you up. And most importantly, he will never, ever let you down.”

    1. Anonymous4:58 PM

Sounds like Meredith was promised a bonus for writing this speech. Then was told no, that's too much and offered half. Then was told it was still too much and here's $50.

She then put a little "polish" on the speech, grabbed the $50 and left the building.

I sure hope she's running over to Hillary's campaign. Or SNL.

  16. Anonymous5:35 PM

Loved the bit with the impersonator...thought she nailed it! :)

Not buying the ghostwriter story...and a whole lot of the internet is of the same mind...but then again IF Ms.McIver does exist, I suppose she's a co-worker of Mr. Baron and Jim Miller--may hap?

Mashable has a pretty good round up of the info..

I put nothing out of bounds for this lot. This whole thing reeks of amateur hour with the kiddies. If they had just sucked it up, dealt with the mess as it came up it would be over...but oooh nooo...they gotta keep stirring the mess and now it stinkin' up the whole joint. Couldn't happen to more deserving bunch of harpies.

    1. Anonymous6:55 PM

Almost everything in this Meredith McIver profile, including pics, were added 15 hours ago

    2. Anonymous5:00 PM

      Oh, that's bad.

*IF* they created this 15 hours ago and used stock photos from the internet, someone is going to find them. Whoever's photo they used is going to come forward and it will just blow up more.

Is anyone else surprised that it is a "woman" that is getting the blame?

O/T but look out Vermont! And this is just the beginning...

If I lived in Vermont I'd be fighting this tooth and nail!

Mega-rich Mormon wants to turn Vermont farmland into prophet’s ‘City of Zion’

...His blueprints were crafted to emulate the so-called Plat of the City of Zion, which was part of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith’s vision from 1833. Hall confessed he had more than 150 engineers working on the project. “All of the sudden it seemed like, oh my God, this is going to happen tomorrow,” she said.

She posted a blog about it on Daily UV and Vermonters went nuts, ready for a war against Hall with campaigns like Hall flew out from Utah to meet with them and try to explain he wasn’t about to pave paradise and put up a parking lot. Rather, he’ll erect townhomes where people can rock the magic underwear for Jesus until the end times come.

...The Old Testament tells of a city that was built so perfectly that God flew it away to heaven. Smith was studying the story and designed something similar with two friends while struck with the holy spirit. Hall found the document in the 1980s and since has sought to build it.

Trump considering fracking mogul Harold Hamm as energy secretary: report

  19. Anonymous5:51 PM

Donald Trump defended ghostwriter Meredith McIver on Wednesday following the revelation that she plagiarized a 2008 speech by First Lady Michelle Obama for use in Melania Trump’s speech at this week’s Republican National Convention.

“She made a mistake, and, you know, people make mistakes,” Trump told ABC News host George Stephanopoulos. “You’ve made mistakes, we’ve all made mistakes.”

McIver’s “mistake” — lifting a section from Obama’s remarks at the 2008 Democratic National Convention — could be a violation of federal campaign laws since the writer is a Trump employee.

Trump demands ‘Art of the Deal’ ghostwriter return all royalties since 1987: MSNBC

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow confirmed during an interview with a former Donald Trump ghostwriter on Wednesday that the real estate mogul has sent a “cease-and-desist” letter to him demanding that he return the royalties from his work on The Art of the Deal.

“It is true,” Tony Schwartz told Maddow. “I got almost immediately that cease-and-desist letter delivered to me by FedEx. It’s nuts, and completely indicative of who he is.”

Schwartz spoke out against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee earlier this week, saying that “if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”

He also said that he planned to donate his royalties from the book’s sales this year to various advocacy groups, including Human Rights Watch and the Center for the Victims of Torture, among others. The letter from Trump’s organization demands that Schwartz return the royalties he has earned since the book was published in 1987.

“There’s no basis in anything legal,” said Schwartz, who is also scheduled to be a panelist on Bill Maher’s Real Time on Wednesday night.

Watch Maddow’s interview with Schwartz, as aired on Wednesday, below.

    1. Anonymous5:07 PM

      Not surprised at all.

Trump has no legal grounds. It's just him being a bully.

But Schwartz has his number. He learned a lot shadowing Trump. Even turned the tables when Trump tried to stick him for half of the expense of the book's roll out party.

Tony will keep every penny and donate it where he sees fit. He's already said that the royalties will be going to charities. And if Trump tried to stop royalty payments from this point on, he'll have a lawsuit on his hands and he'll LOSE.

    1. Anonymous5:30 AM

Yes, but mute them and watch his body language. What a smarmy, narcissist.

  24. Anonymous6:13 PM

When it first came out today that Melania had chosen the Obama speech parts, that speech writer didn't say that she'd heard the words via phone. That phone part is way too convenient of an excuse for Melania. It allows Melania off the hook and makes it look like the writer jotted the words down and later forgot to think about where they'd come from. I don't believe for a second that anyone other than Melania stole the words. I think she presented them as her own and people have lied so she doesn't look bad. She thought nothing of the stealing of someone else's words.

    1. Anonymous5:10 PM

Sorry. I believe after McIver wrote the speech, *IF* she wrote the speech, Donald inserted the Michelle Obama stuff afterwards.

Does anyone believe Donald would let Melania give a speech that he hadn't personally signed off on? Or that he wouldn't do any last minute re-writes and punching ups himself?

I think Donald is the plagiarist.

It probably went something like this:

"Here's the speech. I fixed it up for you. If anyone asks, you wrote it all yourself. Got it?"

  27. Anonymous6:22 PM

I wish there was discussion of whether Donald Trump may be behind the plagarism as well as the rest of the speech which repeats his standard bragging lines. The plagarism fits his nasty style and was possibly meant to co-opt the Obamas' values and force a comparison of Michelle and Melania and associate Melania as first lady. It's Donald Trump stealing from Barack Obama's wife. Too many Trump supporters are complying with comments of how much more graceful and more sincerely Melania delivered the lines.

Greg Sargent, WashPost, has been writing about how the plagarism fits with Obama birtherism but he hasn't put Donald Trump directly in the mix.

    1. Anonymous7:17 PM

Melania speech was very important to Trump, his soft side, his wife. She would be a strong woman and great first lady.

He knew her limits and that she was not trained and skilled by the Trump brand since birth. Her vulnerability could be charming and work for this presentation.

I think he was right there with her, if not writing the whole speech he was a big part. He was confident with everything she was told to say. She had a coach or coaches.

Trump entered the stage as a winner, he said little and gave her the stage to highlight him.

  28. Anonymous6:30 PM

Donald Trump Doesn’t Want To Be President Of The United States – He Wants Attention

...Donald Trump repeatedly proves that he only jumped into the presidential race to get attention and make the headlines. He spews hatred and makes outlandish remarks on a near-daily basis because he knows it’ll help him make the news.

He knows all of his policy proposals – to the extent that they can be considered proposals – are unworkable and borderline insane, but his goal isn’t to make sense or offer serious solutions; it’s to enrich himself.

Heck, he’s practically profiting from his presidential run.

Trump may occasionally slip up and reveal to the world he doesn’t really want to be the leader of the free world, but those of us who have been listening to him speak and watching him conduct himself for the past year already know the truth.

Trump’s presidential campaign is a monumental con job. If you think he’s in this race for anything but himself, then I’ve got a giant bridge to sell you.

    1. Anonymous7:11 PM

"Heck, he’s practically profiting from his presidential run."In 2000, Trump told Fortune, “It's very possible that I could be the first presidential candidate to run and make money on it.” Raking in donations and then paying himself back—with interest—would be one good way to do that, in addition to payments to himself for services rendered." Exactly what he is doing.

After the first day, I refuse to watch any of the convention which has become a total breakdown of civility or according to that pig Christie "just having a little fun"

The only thing missing was the Nazi salute and they have just crossed that line:

Fly The Nazi Salute At The RNC?

That thing did actually happen. At the end of her speech, Laura Ingraham appeared flew the Nazi salute in honor of her hero, Führer Drumpf.

This will become more common in the next few months, I predict. Along with loyalty pledges and brownshirt armies.

    It CAN happen here.

    What a brilliant PR move!

Donald Trump's third wife, Melania Trump, plagiarized the last two paragraphs of Michelle Obama’s address to the Democratic convention in 2008, at the Republican convention

In your face! - Buzzfeed reported that the 2008 speech was written by Sarah Hurwitz, a former speechwriter for Ms Clinton who now works as a special assistant to President Obama.

    1. Anonymous12:08 AM

Huh? It reinforces their cheater/con image at a nat'l convention. The whole thing is an unmitigated disaster. His NATO remarks to the NY Times sealed it.

  31. Anonymous7:04 PM

I just can't help but wonder if Trump is doing all these 'goofs' intentionally? Is he doing it because his funds are dropping and he doesn't want to keep funding things himself? Does he not want to be POTUS? Why would he throw his wife under the bus who hates the public eye and never wanted him to run for POTUS in the first place?

Look at what it has done to their lives! Many of the lies he has told throughout the recent years have been brought out (and I'm sure there are many more)along with showing him to be a fraud in so many ways! Plus, he's been married umpteen times, had affairs, etc.

You would think his family would be having a very difficult time providing their 'real and heartfelt' support of their father. Or, are they just as ugly inside and out as their Dad?

Has anyone noticed that we are not seeing Don the Con's wife by his side in any of the recent media coverage? Wonder how long that marriage is going to last? I'm sure they'll never get another word out of her publically. She's been ridiculed to the max!

Donald Trump is nuts! One problem after another continues to surface and there was another tonight w/Ted Cruz not giving Trump his support during his speech as a main speaker at the Convention!

Personally, I was tickled to death he didn't! It took a LOT of balls to stand his ground and not provide one!

The Republican group at that Convention is truly the nastiest I've ever seen at a convention and I'm in my 70's. They were horrid with their rhetoric toward Hillary Clinton EVEN as to her body parts for Christ's sake!

I seriously doubt Donald Trump will be elected POTUS. He's too toxic - a liar - and, a fraud! Few Americans will want to be like the group of them attending that Convention - they represent the ugly face of America as does Donald Trump. I do not want to be a part of THEM!

Vote Hillary Clinton folks! I am!

What fucking campaign would do that and lie about the words she used in her speech? Especially when they were proven to be those spoken by First Lady Obama's in 2008!

      Sickening and un-American!

Donald doesn't warrant or deserve being POTUS!

Just watched Bill Maher, and Micheal Moore who was on the panel, said that there's a chance that Trump will win. He said forty million white men are sick of a black man running this country and they will make it to the polls. If there is this chance then the rest of us Democrats better haul ass to the polls come November. Also, a guest on Bill's show was the guy who ghostwrote Donald's Art of the Deal book to tell people what a sociopath Don really is. So folks it's coming down to the wire. We need to stop Donald from hijacking our country. It won't be good.

Yet he has the gall to lump every Muslim in the same catergory as a terrorist.

Women do not judged men by the same standards, example Bristol and Dakota with his man boobs. They underestimate just how many women out there who are sick of being judged by their weight and or their looks while they see a fat ass like Christie make it. We see the Trump family on stage not a tubby one in the bunch except for The Donald. So you go on Trump lovers but remember Elinore Roosevelt and what it meant to be a great lady with brains.Looks fade but stupid is forever..

I find it interesting that Laura Bush is wearing dresses much more now than she did as First Lady.

      Trump doesn't care.

To him, anyone looking at his wife's nude pics would just be envious because he OWNS her.

His attitude would be, I have the hottest First Lady in the world.

Oh thank you Laura B. Funniest impression I've seen for a long time. Just about wet myself laughing!

I would like to know. If evangelicals are so good at smelling false profits (sic) then why are they supporting dumspterfire en mass?
    How does that happen?
How does that not cause "Scanners" like head explosions from the cognitive dissonance?

    From Andrew Sullivan:
Can you imagine then-Senator Barack Obama weaponizing a 9/11 widow on stage in Denver, in 2008, to rant and rage against George Bush? I’ve never seen anything more stomach-churningly distasteful on a political stage, and I’ve attended a Sarah Palin rally.

Steve Schmidt shared insight the campaign handled this badly that the public is stupid and are fools. Also the incompetency of the campaign over this and the convention can hurt by not getting donor money.

I think the more serious problem is that McIver is saying that Melania herself had read Michelle Obama's speech. Once the text was prepared (by whomever) Melania should have objected to the obvious use of Michelle Obama's words and phrases. Or is she too dumb or bottomed to know what plagiarism is? That letter, while it may indicate infractions by Trump and his henchmen (who never cared about federal law anyway) it also puts the blame for the plagiarism right at Melania's feet.

Trump's argument that he can govern the country despite his inexperience is that he will hire the right people----Considering the number of people he has hired to do work for his campaign, he has hired a very large percentage of incompetent people. One can just image what the country would be like if he had more than one thing to focus on and he would compound the number of incompetent appointments.

McIver threw the whole speech together with a paper clip, a wad of chewing gum off the bottom of Melania's Jimmy Choos and a broken light bulb.

Either that or Donald, himself, wrote it.

    1. Anonymous5:25 PM

No one can convince me that if Donald didn't write it, he certainly edited the final copy and included the plagiarized bits.

Melania will return with her husband to a grand entrance. Family unity is Trump's high point. She needs to be with the family again. so what she made a mistake. She may not want to say a word about that but she needs to speak and come back with fortitude.

I am curious how the campaign will handle her today. So far the staff stinks. May be the worst campaign in history. Yeah, they can do some shows and let Donald be Donald, but that is about it. They suck.
