Ever wonder why there are all of those erectile dysfunction ads on TV during prime time? Here you go.

While I appreciate Vice attempting to be even handed here, I actually think these advertisement have dome more harm than they are reporting in this piece.

As a matter of fact the AMA wants them banned completely:

“Today’s vote in support of an advertising ban reflects concerns among physicians about the negative impact of commercially-driven promotions, and the role that marketing costs play in fueling escalating drug prices,” AMA board chair-elect Patrice A. Harris said in a statement Tuesday. “Direct-to-consumer advertising also inflates demand for new and more expensive drugs, even when these drugs may not be appropriate.”

Yeah, no shit.

In my opinion not only are these ads completely distasteful but they also feed into a kind of national hypochondria which otherwise healthy Americans that they need a pill to somehow improve their lives.

What most of them need is a gym membership and a self driving car that refuses to take them to McDonalds or Pizza Hut.

  1. Yes, they contribute to a depressing dissatisfaction. Have you seen this?

What ticks me off about them is that these drugs are totally covered by every insurance, and contraception is not. Talk about the war on women--it starts there.

Insurance or not, that's a separate issue altogether. These advertisements have got to go in any case. There's no good that comes out of them and at the end of the day they cost Americans billions.

A visitor to the US after watching TV for a day or so, will think there is an epidemic of ED among American men. I find these ads annoying, and uncomfortable to watch.

  5. 4:28, It's worse than that - SOME contraception IS covered. Like vasectomies.

I laughed so hard at Gryphen's comment about a gym membership and self driving car because he said what is true for the majority of people! I have been an RN for twenty five years. The public overall has become more obese, sedentary and increasingly seek to lay blame somewhere shirking personal accountability for their well being.

I remember back in the old days of soap operas reading an article about how doctors would see an increase in patients complaining about illnesses that corresponded with "illnesses" that soap opera stars had. Seems media has always influenced.

Yes. Big Pharma has turned into Big greedy monster. Pushing drugs is the new cure for big pharma.$$$. It is distasteful, wrong and greedy to push drugs on tv for profit not cure. Out law tv ads and regulate big pharma prices.

Big greedy monster, indeed! Actually, I think the Big Pharma folks are a bunch of criminals. I'm just finishing reading a book called "Anatomy of an Epidemic," by Robert Whitaker, which is an indictment of the pharmaceutical companies and their "sweet deal" with the American Psychiatric Association to peddle psych drugs. An upsetting read, but the information is well worth knowing, especially if you or one you love has been prescribed these drugs. The dangers are huge -and have been covered up.

I recently moved and no longer can afford basic cable TV - and I don't miss it at all. No more commercials! No more having to quickly turn down or off the TV when they start talking about ED ads in front of the curious kid. I just don't want to answer my kid with "because this guy is too old, fat and unhealthy to be able to get it up and keep it up - so he needs a pill - but your Auntie can't get the meds she needs - 'cause those are bad...."

In addition, the sales reps leave samples of only the newest, most expensive drugs with the docs. Nothing with a generic equivalent. It's all about how much money they can squeeze out of the public.

An example - new pills, $1100. for a 6 month supply. The older, time-tested med for the same thing, $75. for the generic for 6 months.

It's a racket. Kinda like organized crime...

"he has “no intention of ever returning to pornography.” where the notion of porn “addiction” becomes useful. By taking a medicalized approach, religious conservatives can discourage porn use while still letting men off the hook, painting them as not entirely responsible for their own sexual decisions."It’s the old “smoking weed leads to heroin” theory, and it’s clear how this idea seeped into Hine’s legal defense. His legal defense, after all, was that child porn is the “harder stuff,” as if a man who likes looking at naked adult women will somehow get his fill and graduate to looking at minors."<BULLSHIT on that.
"The problem, as the Hine case shows, is that once you start regarding normal sexual behavior as dysfunctional, that allows people who are engaged in genuinely deviant and harmful behavior (like child porn) to, perversely, recast themselves as normal. EXACTLY!"
    THAT FUCKer is a PEDOPHILE.
P.S.50% CHRISTIAN "describe themselves as porn addicts"

There is no need for drugs for erectile dysfunction. A whole food, plant-based diet will cause the plaque in the penile arteries (which blocks circulation to the area) to disinegrate and restore proper function. This is well established by urologists. A WFPB diet consists of no animal products whatsoever, not even fish, and also no oil and no processed foods. Just the basics--- veggies, fruit, nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains. So for example, a smoothie for breakfast--throw the kitchen sink into it as long as it's 'whole' and plants...use dates for sweetening along with the fruit. For lunch, black beans and brown rice with a side of asparagus and salad and fruit. For dinner, quinoa with veggies and a cashew sauce, side veg like a baked potato and make a salsa with avocado to use on top instead of butter, etc. Watch the film Forks Over Knives to find out more. http://www.forksoverknives.com/fok-releases-raising-the-flag-with-a-vegan-diet-about-sexual-dysfunction/ and check this out.. http://nutritionfacts.org/video/survival-of-the-firmest-erectile-dysfunction-and-death/ and this

And yet they take an oath that states "First do no harm". A lot of these drugs are fast tracked and over advertised, the excuse being it costs money, and they issue patents so one drug company can make a killing for x number of years. My doctor won't prescribe an aspirin without first going over the risk vs benefit.
The next ones to go should be Lawyers advertising on television, they're all doing more harm than good.
