The moderator for the presidential debates on Fox News says he will allow candidates to lie. Color me unsurprised.

Look I only play a journalist on Fox News, why would I be interested in the truth?
Courtesy of Think Progress:

For the first time, Fox News has been selected to moderate a presidential debate. The Presidential Debate Commission selected Chris Wallace, host of Fox News Sunday, to moderate the third presidential debate, scheduled for October 19 in Las Vegas.

Wallace appeared on Fox News’ Media Buzz to discuss what his selection meant to him personally and “what it means to Fox News.”

The host of the program, Howard Kurtz, asked Wallace, “What do you do if they make assertions that you know to be untrue?”

“That’s not my job,” Wallace replied, without skipping a beat. “It’s not my job to be a truth squad.”

I would assume that this is why the Republicans pushed so hard for a debate on Fox News.

Trump is going to get hammered during these debates and he wanted at least one place where he could lie with impunity and not be called on it. And after all isn't that why Fox News exists in the first place?

Let's face it the Fox News debate is probably the only one that the conservatives will bother to watch, so when they go to the polls in November their heads will be filled with Donald Trump lies and concerns over why Hillary Clinton looked so irritated by all of those Benghazi questions from Chris Wallace.

What a fucked up nation America has become in allowing FOX to continue their 'facade' of Donald Trump in the debate they will be hosting!

FOX is the same cable station that has promoted and supported Trump for over a year! All the while spouting lie upon lie (Hannity especially!) as to why Trump should be elected POTUS.

Do they really think Americans are that stupid and will actually vote for Trump in November?

I think Hillary Clinton will win this race as she should! She is the qualified one that is ready to step into the role of POTUS!

Yes, they do. Let's hope the electoral college thinks differently.

You would think the years of lies that Fox peddled about Barack Obama would be enough to disqualify them from moderating a presidential debate.

There must be so much money in it for so many people for this farce to go ahead and for the commission to forget any dignity it once pretended to- because there is no coming back after plumbing this depth, they cannot unring that bell.

I assume that tRump already has the list of questions that Wallace intends to ask, so he has answers prepared. Shouting insults at Hillary the way he did at the other contenders will NOT work this time, even on Faux. Mike Wallace must be rolling in his grave at what a putz his son is.

I think they are still mad about Crowley correcting Romney and are making sure it does not happen again!! That moment was the end for Mittens. Let us hope that by debate three (or the UNbedate, as it will be known) that Trump is so far behind it will take several natural disasters for him to sen win two states.

How simple would it be for the moderator to cut the mike when they talk longer than their allowed time? How about a simple "That is unsubstantiated" when a lie is stated.

I almost agree with you, but the nature of a debate is that one person states his/her case, and the other has the opportunity to rebut -- which includes rebutting any lies told by the former. The former can then answer the rebuttal (perhaps with more lies, which his/her opponent can be sure to bring up as the debate goes on). That's how a debate works. The viewing/listening audience then decides who won the debate.
It would be very nice to have a "forum" whereby the informed and well-researched interviewer asks the questions, and is obligated to state that the interviewee has lied, and then corrects the interviewee with the facts. But that is not a debate.

    3. In NormalWorld Maple and Wallace are correct. The moderator is simply is supposed to ... facilitate the proceedings, not be the Gotcha Fact Squad. The most important job is seeing that both candidates have essentially equal time to present their case to the people.

HOWEVER .... Fox News is not NormalWorld.

And while Wallace may say it is not his job to fact check or call Trump out on anything he says, then likewise it is not his place to fact check or call Clinton out on anything she says.

Right? Sure hope he doesn't do that then (Note: Martha Radditz was responding to a comment by candidate Obama, not just offering up "Yeah Mitt, he did say it" off her own bat).

It will be interesting to see if Wallace lets Clinton ever go over time, or go over time by a significant percentage, or interrupt Trump when it's his turn to speak. It'll likewise be interesting to see if Wallace will cut Trump off if he goes overtime, and take charge of the situation by somehow shutting Trump's Trap if he interrupts Clinton during her time.

I may well stock up on wine, tacos, and stop watches and keep careful tabs of the debate.

The Republican National Party (and many State Republican parties) - as well as the Republican leaning media and press - been going after both individuals for eons.

It's ridiculous to believe the words of the Republicans and Donald Trump!

    1. I understand the concern about the last debate being the one that people will remember and since Trump will lie his head off and behave terribly, it is a real risk for Hillary in trying to overcome his behavior.

On the other hand, if he loses the first two debates due to his incompetence and misbehaving, the narrative will already be in place that with a fox moderator at the third debate "of course the debate will be rigged for him." So even going into it, people may well believe that a Trump "win" really isn't one at all.

That is what I am hoping anyway.

    2. Anonymous4:12 PM

Nefer - I hope you are correct about how these three debates will play out.

Hillary will be completely prepared and ready for anything they throw at her while Trump will expend all his energy remembering the 'zingers' his team came up with and keeping his temper in check.

As I've said before, I have no doubt Hillary's team have figured out exactly how to trigger his outbursts, which is relatively easy with him being so thin-skinned.

The few attempts to 'look presidential' that he's tried recently have mostly been failures. Since he feels he is so superior to Hillary that he doesn't even need to do traditional debate prep, he will likely not have practiced responding calmly and intelligently to questions or comments designed to provoke an angry response.

haha I wonder how the debate commission is taking that.

Did James and Lachlan Murdoch go to the mat for Fox to get a debate and the debate commission fell for their promise that it would be a real grown-up debate?

The MSM will be watching. Will they call out the lies? Maybe not. They still have a ve$ted intere$t in treating Trump like a real candidate.

  15. Chris Wallace should decline to be moderator so that someone who will do the job can have that position. I recommend Joy Reid and Jorge Ramos.

A bit off topic, but I must admit I have noticed how EVERY Republican who has a Constitutional duty/obligation, excepting only those of lower military ranks, audaciously and mendaciously refuse to carry out those duties/obligations. Mitch McConnell is proud of his refusal to do his job, all while villifying President Obama. Paul Ryan gleefully refuses to fund Zika research and prevention, laughing all the way to bank! Donald Trump won't release his medical report, tax returns, or Trump Foundation records, but the media never says a word!!! These Republicans and their familiars in the media have the utter gall to express contempt toward Bill & Hillary Clinton, to sneer at Barack & Michelle Obama, to ridicule Joe & Jill Biden, to demean Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter when they are not worthy to breathe the same air as any one of those outstanding, distinguished public servants! I plan to work harder than I ever have to GOTV, harder and longer than I did in 2008 and 2012!

Let's take a cue from how Sarah Palin acts, unleashing the Hounds of Hell on someone she doesn't like. We all have to contact the debate commission and insist that Wallace be removed as a moderator because he clearly cannot fulfill 100% of the job.

From Wikipedia: A discussion moderator or debate moderator is a person whose role is to act as a neutral participant in a debate or discussion, holds participants to time limits and trying to keep them from straying off the topic of the questions being raised in the debate. Sometimes moderators may ask questions intended to allow the debate participants to fully develop their argument in order to ensure the debate moves at pace.

If one of the candidates makes a statement that requires a response, the moderator would be the one to decide that. But Wallace won't do that, even if one of the candidates lies. That would require a response. I say that they need to replace Wallace with someone who is willing to hold the candidates to the premise of giving honest answers. Otherwise, this will be a comedy show, not a political discussion.

When Donald Trump hits the debate stage in a few weeks with Hillary Clinton, it’s not hard to imagine the Republican nominee challenging his Democratic rival’s foreign policy judgment by falsely claiming ― as he’s done dozens of times ― to have been a staunch critic of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

He’s made the Iraq boast during Republican primary debates as a way to separate himself from his competitors ― despite being on the record as tepidly supporting the U.S. invasion ― and more recently wielded it while targeting Clinton, who voted for the disastrous war as a New York senator. If Trump were to do so again at the upcoming presidential debates, he just might get away with it.

“Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace, the moderator for the third presidential debate, said in a Sunday interview that it isn’t his role to call out the candidates’ false claims.

“That’s not my job,” Wallace told his Fox News colleague Howard Kurtz. “I do not believe that it’s my job to be a truth squad.”

“No actually that is your job,” Peter Hamby, Snapchat’s head of news and a former CNN political correspondent, responded on Twitter.

The best debate I witness in my life time is the one between Joe Biden & Paul Ryan, they don't call him "Lyin Ryan" for nothing. That line "Please proceed Governor" is one that will be etched in History for President Obama. If you're not going to use FACTS to argue your point, then it's not a debate, you're just blowing smoke out your ass, and Chris Wallace is happy to let you do it.

Donald Trump Opens the Door to Dodging a Debate With Hillary Clinton

The nation's drama king who is also running for president on the Republican ticket left a lot of wiggle room to get out of debates when responding to a reporter's questions. Donald Trump said he "expects" to do them all, "well, as of this moment" and barring a "natural disaster".

Those assholes. That asshole. They are trying to set Hillary up to fail. That Wallace with his ugly smug face. I lost respect for him years ago, and yet he is called a journalist. His father must be turning in his grave. What a farce. Trump is such a spoiled idiot. He tries to come off sounding like a down home guy telling everyone that Hillary is too weak to travel and do everything he does. How can Hillary be in the limelight when Donald hogs it like a greedy pig? Everyone in this country has lost their fricken minds if they think Trump is on their side. He is not. He is for himself. There is proof after proof in his words and action that he is for Donald, and yet people believe that he will lead the way. He will probably put himself on the throne and call himself God. He's too far gone to a sane president.
