CNN president regrets giving Donald Trump so much air time. Well it's a little late now!

Donald Trump with Jeff Zucker.
Courtesy of Buzzfeed:

CNN President Jeff Zucker on Friday said it was a “mistake” to air so many Trump rallies “and let them run” in 2015, giving the candidate an unfettered platform to call Mexicans rapists, support bans on Muslims from entering the US, and overall grow his base, which includes white nationalists.

“If we made any mistake last year, it’s that we probably did put on too many of his campaign rallies in those early months and let them run,” Zucker said at a talk at the Harvard Kennedy School. “Listen, because you never knew what he would say, there was an attraction to put those on air.”

To be fair to CNN other cable news outlets are also to blame for giving Trump all of that free  media coverage, including MSNBC and Fox News.

And let's not forget all of the coverage he continues to receive in newspapers, on internet sites, and on TV entertainment shows.

Of course it could be argued that, much like Dr. Frankenstein, after helping to create the beast, most media outlets seem determined now to stop it, and there are some like the New York Times and Washington Post who have done an admirable job of doing just that.

Of course if I remember my Mary Shelley correctly the creature managed to survive and to even outlive its creator.

I disagree. Every bit of coverage allowed Trump the chance to show his true colors as well as those of the GOP.

I agree. It is hard to argue that exposing Trump's psychotic antics was a bad thing.

Donald's weirdo kids planned this a few years ago. They didn't want him to run thru all the money(being the FABulous business man he is) before they could inherit, so they've been gaslighting him to run for POTUS in hopes of precipitating a public melt down. Everybody knows Donnie's dad spent the last 6 years of his life in an Alzheimer's haze, and the melt down we're all witnessing will facilitate a committal and a handing over of the keys to the family biz. Bet Ivanka gets the lion's share.

  4. I have no problem with CNN, MSNBC, or Fox airing Trump, but what boiled my blood: 1) there was no editorial commentary to reveal his demagoguery and to critique his racist, xenophobic, misogynistic, Islamaphobic views 2) there was no fact-checking done to expose his lies and mischaracterizations 3) Hillary Clinton and other candidates were not given the same amount of coverage 4) Donald Trump's paid staffers were/are hired by CNN, an obvious conflict of interest 5) in a effort to increase ratings, consequently making more money, these "news networks" pandered to Trump, e.g., allowing him to call in and spew his rubbish, thereby replacing news with entertainment 6) such pandering normalized hate and legitimized vitriolic sexism and bigotry 7) these money-grubbing organizations ignored their Constitutional obligations and demeaned our democracy 8) the media abdicated their duty to help create a well-informed citizenry.

Jeff Zucker has facilitated much damage to our less than perfect Union. He did everything he could to cripple it and further divide it all for filthy lucre. Hope he finds wherever he left his conscience and his backbone.

I think, he has irreparably damaged CNN by hiring tRump deplorables like Levandosky (sp?).
People are fed up with CNN and are leaving in droves.

CNN is STILL constantly covering Donald Trump - not a damned thing has changed!

I don't watch FOX, but they are supposedly doing the same thing.

MSNBC does a lot of it too - STILL.

So, if Trump elected (which I sincerely doubt!), he says he is going to take down the media/press. He will be a dictator and America will be a third world country. Simple as that!

      Trump is evil and disgusting!

    4. Margueritte Hill -- excellent summary. I would only add that when the MSM realized they could make as much $$ tearing him down, as building him up, did they made an about face and even apologize. But until they stop paying Trump surrogates to come on and "jazz" things up will I watch them again.

It's all entertainment to them. Shame.

That said, Washington Post & New York Times are trying to fix things. But who reads newspapers? Thank gawd they are on line.

Well, that is regrets a bit very, VERY late. After all, he hired tRump's shill, Levandowsky, even though his other employees almost went on strike when he did that. And THAT he is not regretting, right?! So, IOW, he regrets something just because he might have been called out.

What I want to know is, where did Pence's eyebrows run off to? How about some questions regarding HIS health, like the persecute-y ones the GOP fling at Hillary.

Oh yes! Like Tina Fey was responsible for the downfall of Palin. Puh-leeze. If they are so thin-skinned that they can't handle being parodied, it shows their true character and perhaps they should pay more attention to what they bleat or, better yet, stay out of public affairs all together.

Hitler would have loved to have lived in this era. World domination would be his. Thanks to the media coverage. Donald Trump, a true narcissist, only did what he knew how to do. Mouth off and show off. CNN, FOX, MSNBC did what they do too. Try to get more ratings. We the viewers are in on this too. Even now that Trump and Palin fascinate us. It's like watching something forbidden on one of those smut sites. We can't turn our eyes away. And all the players know that. That's why Donald says anything. It's been tried and tested that as viewers we can't tell what's real anymore. Did you hear of that video where this guy tells the screen that he bought home a girlfriend but she is shy? Then he proceeds to show a tied and gagged woman on his bathroom floor. Now "they" are investigating it after six or seven years as a possible lead to a real missing girl. It's on. And it ain't gonna be pretty, all this media hype and distortion. You know who loves this stuff. Putin and his old KGB. The love putting false stuff out to the gullible.
