One bright spot in yesterday's election, Joe Arpaio is no longer the sheriff of Maricopa County.
Courtesy of ABC 15:
Maricopa County has a new sheriff in town.
Democrat Paul Penzone beat long-standing Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio Tuesday in a campaign that featured plenty of attacks on both sides.
Arpaio, who has been sheriff since 1993, is still in the midst of criminal contempt charges for continuing to profile Latino drivers after a federal judge barred him from doing so.
In no way does this make up for a Trump victory, but at least it's something.
So at least this one county in Arizona is now a little less racist, while the rest of the country is pulling out their best white sheets and cutting little eye holes in them.
This maybe the very first time I have ever even considered moving to Arizona.

Not enough of a bright spot. We are in a post truth era. Truth doesn't matter anymore. A man that lies constantly and is so corrupt is seen more honest than a woman who's been investigated more than anyone else in history and found to have committed no crime. The misogyny in this country astounds me - not just by men but by women also. Every woman who voted for Trump should lose their right to vote. A right that many women like Hillary fought very hard to get for them.

DeleteListen to what you are saying lol. You are nutz.
I have lost all respect for any woman that voted for him. Well said, 8:49 AM.
DeleteAnonymous9:36 AM,
DeleteI said "women like Hillary", not "women, like Hillary,". Dumbass.
Uhhh, 10:41?
DeleteNot sure even what you mean with the comma or no comma, but 9:36 is an exact quote of your post.
Not entirely the rest of the country. Look at blue New England (with legal weed in MA). Yeah it was closer than we'd like but at least in my state all Congressional reps are D as is the state Leg.
ReplyDeleteyeah, keep the electorate stoned and happy so that they can be easily controlled.
DeleteGoodbye for now, Gryphen and my fellow IMers. I am taking a mental vacation from all things political for a while. I will become child-like, totally indifferent to news, politics and the economy. I know that I can't stay in my mental exile as long as I would like, but I am going to go away for as long as I can.
ReplyDeletePeace.

Yeah and the others in Tucson nano and babue too. Voters said no go.
ReplyDeleteYes, the misogyny in 2016 is astounding. I am so glad I live in CA and in the city and don';t have to live day to day surrounded by the deplorables.
ReplyDeleteI am so disgusted with the white women out there who think, like Palin does, that they are beyond feminism, when in reality they still haven't caught up to a movement that started decades ago and are just accepting of centuries of abuse by men. I cannot believe what millions of people are willing to accept in a candidate who is male, and not accept in a candidate who is female.
And it is looking likely that we will be ditching Pat McCrory as our governor here in NC, although the SOB refuses to concede. Another small silver lining.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe Ayotte in NH? Although she won't concede either.
DeleteHe got what he deserved! Fuck him and his racists ways!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter saw last night's election results map, and said, "Wait, we have seen this map before!"
ReplyDeleteShe was right. Gryphen, check this out. This needs to go viral. It's Nate Silver's map "What 2016 Would Look Like If Only Men Voted". It's the nearly identical map as the final map last night.
It looks like women didn't vote AT ALL. Or our votes got switched somehow, based on gender on our ID card or drivers license? I don't know, but WOW, it's nearly the same result, and don't forget that Eric Trump tweeted that he wished Only Men Could Vote!!
Scroll down to the Men Voting Map:

Actually Hillary won the popular vote( so people voted) but she lost on electoral votes.
DeleteNo, she lost because Democrats in the rust belt were tired of Democratic promises that were never fulfilled. They had enough bullshit.
DeleteLike the quote from Paint Your Wagon:
"I don't know what I'll get, but I know what I've had."
The DNC blew it big time.
Perhaps they should have consulted with some people from the area familiar with the regular people, not the party elite.
Like, say, MICHAEL MOORE. (He called it in July. it went down EXACTLY as he predicted. Why? Because the DNC is disconnected from the people and they didn't pay attention or listen.)
That doesn't explain Florida and North Carolina. I think that is Democrats not going out to vote because they were butthurt about something. Like they don't like Hillary. They came out for Obama but don't think Hillary has done enough for them. Boo hoo.
I woke up feeling devastated this morning but after hearing what Hillary & Obama had to say I feel much better. I'll be tuning out Trump as I hate the sound of his voice as much as I do Sarah's after a year and a half of free media Trump TV 24/7.
ReplyDeleteWe can't give up hope. There are some bright spots here and there like Arpaio losing & more legal cannibis.
I think that eventually the alt-rights are going to turn on Trump eventually once he is shown to be the politicians' puppet and becomes one of them. History repeats itself and once again will become disillusioned as Trump breaks his promises one by one by one. Like Mexico is really going to pay for a wall - his biggest prank joke. Right now alt-right is screaming for Hillary still to be put in prison. Just wait until Trump's decisions affect them personally where it hurts. Buyer's remorse will follow.
I wonder how long Trump will be happy being president. The pay isn't great (for a "billionaire") and it's hard work with lots to study and keep on top of. Doesn't sound like a job he'll enjoy.
DeleteWe got our news nowhere but The Daily Show during the W regime, same with this Trump regime, all political news will be coming from comedy, at least for me.

Delete"Morning After To-Do List:
1. Take over the Democratic Party and return it to the people. They have failed us miserably.
2. Fire all pundits, predictors, pollsters and anyone else in the media who had a narrative they wouldn’t let go of and refused to listen to or acknowledge what was really going on. Those same bloviators will now tell us we must “heal the divide” and “come together.” They will pull more hooey like that out of their ass in the days to come. Turn them off.
3. Any Democratic member of Congress who didn’t wake up this morning ready to fight, resist and obstruct in the way Republicans did against President Obama every day for eight full years must step out of the way and let those of us who know the score lead the way in stopping the meanness and the madness that’s about to begin.
4. Everyone must stop saying they are “stunned” and “shocked.” What you mean to say is that you were in a bubble and weren’t paying attention to your fellow Americans and their despair. YEARS of being neglected by both parties, the anger and the need for revenge against the system only grew. Along came a TV star they liked whose plan was to destroy both parties and tell them all “You’re fired!” Trump’s victory is no surprise. He was never a joke. Treating him as one only strengthened him. He is both a creature and a creation of the media and the media will never own that.
5. You must say this sentence to everyone you meet today: “HILLARY CLINTON WON THE POPULAR VOTE!” The MAJORITY of our fellow Americans preferred Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Period. Fact. If you woke up this morning thinking you live in an effed-up country, you don’t. The majority of your fellow Americans wanted Hillary, not Trump. The only reason he’s president is because of an arcane, insane 18th-century idea called the Electoral College. Until we change that, we’ll continue to have presidents we didn’t elect and didn’t want. You live in a country where a majority of its citizens have said they believe there’s climate change, they believe women should be paid the same as men, they want a debt-free college education, they don’t want us invading countries, they want a raise in the minimum wage and they want a single-payer true universal health care system. None of that has changed. We live in a country where the majority agree with the “liberal” position. We just lack the liberal leadership to make that happen (see: #1 above)."
Help me get through the day. List your bright spots here:
ReplyDeleteMinnesota voted for Hillary.
DeleteI found this helpful: "It is a mistake to look too far ahead. Only one link in the chain of destiny can be handled at a time." Winston Churchill
DeleteMy FIL in law used to say "any day I'm above the ground is a good day". Does that help?
DeleteTrump has to actually work and put up with tons of shit. Watch him age 20 years in 4.
DeleteVoters just elected Kate Brown, the first openly LGBT governor in U.S. history
Delete"This loss hurts. But please never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it." —Hillary
DeleteTammy Duckworth beat Mark Kirk.
DeleteMy Senator (Chuck Schumer) and Congresswoman (Louise Slaughter) won reelection.
California, Oregon and Washington would be much better to live in then Arizona. Solid blue states with legalized marijuana. Of course us blue states should be prepared for his backlash. Not sure how much he can hurt California since we are a strong Democratic state but I'm sure he will try and punish us for not voting for him.
ReplyDeleteI love living in California. My state, my home. I wish we could break free of the rest of the nation.
DeletePot too in AK, we have nearly 20 stores opening this month in Anchorage, it's time to anesthetize for the next four years. I drink a lot, but I'm switching to pot because it doesn't have any calories and I'm tired of trading meals for booze calories ;-)
DeleteThat's where the wall should be built. From north to south walling us off from Trumpland.
DeleteHe should have lost! And, thank God he did because he is a racist through and through!
ReplyDeleteForget moving to AZ. This place is still run by Teabag Republicans. When I moved here from WA, I felt like I had somehow slid back in time about 20 years, and that was in the pre-teabagger era. Joe Arpaio owes his tenure to Sun City, Mormon stronghold Mesa, and racism. Even with a Fed judge hauling his ass into court to face Contemp charges he only lost 45/55.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean no more pink granny panties?
ReplyDeleteAnother bright spot is all of Trump's sexual assault victims/accusers will not be sued.
ReplyDeleteCrooked Hillary will be pardoned and not imprisoned.
Pardoned or imprisoned for WHAT???? She broke no laws. The only law she broke is the unwritten one that she should know her place.
DeleteRight. So he can go have a place in the Trump Administration.
ReplyDeleteYay.
What? Another Palin endorsed loser bites the dust? How many losers did she endorse this election cycle?
ReplyDeleteJoe Arpaio, Darryl Glenn....
....Donald Trump.....
DeleteTrump is a big enough prick to hire him.
ReplyDeleteJust saw Trump's list of candidates for positions in his administration - old white men all - Giuliani, Gingrich, Sessions, Christie, Bolton .... oh my fucking god. In Trumpland aka United Hates of America, there is no room for diversity. Meanwhile, Canada has made sure that half of the ministerial appointments in that government are WOMEN and that overall the diversity of the country is represented. Oh and they have universal healthcare (not perfect but what is), same sex marriage, parental maternity leave, a decent minimum wage, a government not founded on any religion, abortion is legal, legal pot, etc., etc., etc.
DeleteIsk fat old white men. Dusgusting. Hopefully they will all end up in prison gabbing pucies.
DeleteGryphen,
ReplyDeleteDo you think the election results would have been different if Bernie Sanders had been the nominee?
Arpaio in a drop in the bucket (of deplorables). Trump slagged Somali Americans in Minnesota before the election. He has given half of America (and more if you include their non voting family members) the go ahead to be hateful to anyone who is not white Christian. I feel terrible and very worried for Muslims, Mexicans, African Americans, Somalis, Atheists, and everyone who doesn't look "Aryan" in the new United Hates of America.
ReplyDeleteGeorge W. Bush is thrilled.
ReplyDeleteHe has been saved from being the worst President in the history of the United States.
Now that he is the President he'll feel free to grab them by the pussy anytime he wants with no consequences!
ReplyDeleteOkay. One more time, fellow democrats. Breath. Now listen, every president promises. Some become reality many promises don't. Now sit back and watch the show. We shall see. It's one thing to talk now let's see the walk.
ReplyDeleteSupreme Court.
DeleteYou sober now?
Good. But buttuglyorangeface may put him in his cabinent.
