The Obama Administration calls for an end to corporal punishment in our schools.

Courtesy of the Washington Post:

The Obama administration Tuesday called for an end to corporal punishment in states and school districts that continue to allow the practice.

In a letter to governors and state school leaders, U.S. Education Secretary John B. King, Jr., called corporal punishment “harmful, ineffective, and often disproportionately applied to students of color and students with disabilities.”

He urged states that had not yet ended corporal punishment — generally defined as paddling, caning or otherwise using physical force to inflict pain as punishment — to “eliminate this practice from your schools, and instead promote supportive, effective disciplinary measures.”

While corporal punishment is banned in 28 states and the District of Columbia, there are 15 states that permit the practice and seven more that do not expressly prohibit it.

Just he very idea that this even has to be done in 2016 makes me sick to my stomach.

We now know so much about the harmful effects of corporal punishment on the emotional and mental well being of our children, and there are now so many more effective methods for behavior management, that it just seems barbaric that there are still institutions of learning who resort to physically injuring a child in order to gain compliance.

And of course this letter needs to be written now because once Jerry Falwell Jr. replaces John B. King Jr, as our Education Secretary I imagine he will reintroduce public floggings as a form of behavior modification.

  1. Devon has the position not FalwEll. How she stands on corporal punishment, I do not know. But those children who have the least will have even less with the charter school, school choice model that she really pushed. Kids get into the best schools their parents can pick for them with the public school base lowered even more.

    1. I'm sure she'll be told how she feels about corporal punishment. She was for Common Core before she accepted the post and now she's against it.

Well, actually, Betsy DeVos is now the pick for Sec of Education. DeVos is a multi-billionaire -- she and her husband are the founders of Amway, the original scam.

DeVos is all in for "school choice," charter schools, and vouchers. That is, wealthy investors set up "charter schools" that are free from oversight by local school boards. Parents get tax money to send their kids to these charter schools . . . except the voucher covers less than half the tuition. Meanwhile, the charter school gets to pick and choose students, leaving poor students in the public schools . . . which will fail because the charters are taking all the money, so, because the public schools are failing, we need to put more tax money into the charter school . . . you get the picture.

Betsy DeVos may not be the Antichrist but she's in the running.

You are confusing charter schools and vouchers for private schools. Not the same. Charters are public, thus no voucher needed. DeaVos is also uber Xtian - where the vouchers come in since most private schools except the really pricey ones are religious in nature.

I still remember seeing that paddleboard hanging in the elementary school principle office. I wonder how many bullies were created by that paddle?

You're spoiling their fun. You know all Republicans are perverted in some way. What could be more satisfying than hitting defenseless children?

  5. We here in Michigan are all too familiar with Devos family. The richest super deluxe brand christian family in MI who made their money off a pyramid scheme is intent on destroying everything that benefits average people. One of their main targets is unions, and any benefits that unions bring to working people, which is why they push for charter and private schools. They have bought and paid for our legislature who does their bidding at the drop of a check. They recently dropped over 1.4 million on them just to prevent additional oversight on charter schools in Detroit. As it is now, charter schools in MI are among the least regulated in the country. Now they're going after our retiree medical benefits. Antichrist is right.

  7. "Dirty Gertie" we called our fifth grade nun at Corpus Christie parish school in Philadelphia in the 1960s. I'm sure I got it at least once or twice over a school year, but her favorite victims were Michael, Anthony and John. (And I remember all three last names too.) Worse, she'd whale on them with a paddle across the ass in the front of the classroom (all boys), so that those of us not put in physical pain by her would be a captive, helpless audience to her sadism. Drawn as I am to underdogs, I eventually ended up befriending all three of those guys, especially Anthony. And I can still summon rage at "Dirty Gertie" 50 years later. That's her legacy.

And then, this is what we have to look forward to. Rethinking that Delta credit card. I would have asked to get off.
