Carrie Fisher dies. Because 2016 sucks!

Courtesy of People:

Carrie Fisher, the actress best known as Star Wars‘ Princess Leia Organa, has died after suffering a heart attack. She was 60.

Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd:

“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” reads the statement.

George Michael on Sunday and now Carrie Fisher today?

Look 2016 you were already going to go down in history as one of the worst years ever, stop trying to run up the fucking score!

I have never wished death upon anyone - but in the case of Trump - I could make an exception. I fear for what insane things he is going to do in the very near future.

I hate Star Wars but this woman was amazing in her candidness when talking about her mental illness and others things. She tried hard to get rid of the stigma. There's nothing wrong with addiction. It is never a sign of bad parenting, or weakness. It is something only one person understands- the person afflicted.

Agreed. I had hoped the reports that said she was "stable" meant she was recovering. I'm guessing she was on a ventilator with no chance of recovery the entire time. :'(

9:13, are you an addict yourself? Of course it's a sign of bad parenting; if you're addicted, you can't be there mentally to parent. And everyone around the addict is stuck having to deal with the addict's selfish, destructive ways. An addict doesn't care who they hurt just so long as they can selfishly get their fix.

Patton " he rolled to victory in Europe with the absolute conviction that God was on his side. " At a"command meeting following the massive German attack that began what would be known as the Battle of the Bulge, Patton saw a tactical opportunity. “This bastard has PUT HIS COCK in a meat grinder and I’ve got the handle!” in two hospital tents in Sicily in 1943 when he infamously confronted two traumatized soldiers and slapped them. Patton had no concept of the disease that was then called shell shock, and we now know as post-traumatic stress disorder. Wars were about WINning and GLORY"He told colleagues that the soldiers were cowards and that the slapping—he also brandished a pistol at one of the soldiers—had saved their souls."The displaced Jews were “locusts,” “lower than animals,” “lost to all decency.” They were “a subhuman species without any of the cultural or social refinements of our times,” Patton wrote in his diary. A United Nations aid worker tried to explain that they were traumatized, but “personally I doubt it. I have never looked at a group of people who seem to be more lacking in intelligence and spirit.” E. was horrified to find that some of the guards were former SS men. During the tour, Patton remarked that the camps had been clean and decent before the arrival of the Jewish “DPs” (displaced persons), who were “pissing and crapping all over the place.” Eisenhower told Patton to shut up, but he continued his diatribe, telling Eisenhower he planned to make a nearby German village “a concentration camp for some of these goddam Jews.” what really worried Eisenhower and Truman was Patton’s desire to start another war"

Depressing read Anonymous 2:12pm. At 64 and a feminist in thought and deed my entire life (even before I knew what that was), I do feel discouraged. But I also know that much of the progress made over the years (some of which younger women are not even cognizant)cannot easily be undone. It's true that further progress will be a fight, but so was past progress. I've heard young women refuse to be called feminist, having bought into the whole "femi-nazi" concept and during the election I even had arguments with young women who did not support Hillary because she acted "too mannish"!! I feel some of the younger generation have taken the strides that were made over many years (starting with the Suffragettes) for granted. Women should never have thought they could rest on their laurels, but that has happened and now we'll perhaps have a new awakening of what is at stake. I hope many on here will participate in the Women's March on 1/21 - either in Washington or wherever they may live. I will be there

This week Vera Rubin also died- an amazing astronomer who discovered evidence of dark matter. Yet she wasn't allowed into Princeton's graduate program because they didn't even accept women until 1975. She was passed over for a Nobel prize (only 2 have been awarded to women in physics). I was in a physics program in the early 70s and it was clear that "acceptance" did not mean you were actually accepted. Women were ignored while men were mentored. We older women need to shout from the rooftops what those days were like - no birth control (without a husband's permission), no loans or mortgages (without a husband's permission)- we could be back there if the younguns don't wake up.

Agree Anon 3:35PM. I was in law school 1974-1977 and then started practicing law. Someone just posted on FB that this year # of women enrolled in law school exceeds # of men. Wow! I just don't know how to impress these things on young men and women. As a parent, my children were certainly "indoctrinated" by me and I have a son and a daughter who call themselves feminists and "get" where this country used to be. But what do we do on a broader scale?

As it happens my son is 36, married, has a college degree and has a high paying position with Microsoft. I think he's doing pretty well for himself and others. We are hoping for a grandchild from him and wife soon. I hope you have no children.

You actually have a good point. The thing is, if you're 20 your favorite celebrities (and I have no idea who those might be) will probably be around for a while. But if you're a kid of the 50s, 60s, 70s your idols are aging (and dying) and probably faster than you unless you too lived life in the fast lane. Be glad you're (as my dear FIL used to say) "still above ground where any day is a good day".

I knew when Debbie Reynolds put out a statement that they would let us know of any changes that she was not doing good. I loved Star Wars. I don't care what people say. Carrie was my first glimpse of a strong role model on screen. Was sad to learn later that she struggled with many issues. But through it all she was honest, and very humorous about it. She made me laugh hard when I read her book Princess Diarist that my brother just bought for my Christmas gift. Yes, 2016 was a suckfest.

    3. It is a tragedy when a mother outlives her child. For years I processed that old spiritual as "Sometimes I feel like a childless Mother." To me that is as much a tragedy as being a motherless child.

Debbie Reynolds is more of a rock than Molly Brown. She has overcome a lifetime of tragedy.

And yet her mother, Debbie Reynolds, lives on at age 84.

The majority of people who turn to drugs for any length of time in their lives, for whatever reason, tend to die younger.

That said, with what we have coming in the way of fascism in this country, some might just be glad to go.
