I know he didn't write it, and I am a fan of Bonnie Raitt as well, but there is something about his version that I have always found incredibly touching.
As you undoubtedly already know George Michael is the latest celebrity to fall victim to 2016.
He was only 53 which somehow makes it seem even more unfair.
I actually have quite a few George Michael songs on my I-Phone, including some of my favorites like Faith, Jesus to a Child, Father Figure, One More Try, and of course Careless Whisper.
He lived a very controversial life, but damn he made some fine music.
Now 2016 needs to hurry up and end while we still have some entertainment icons left.
Loved George Michael. Great artist with many great hits! Way too young for him to go. RIP

So sad. His music is the soundtrack to my life in so many ways. Careless Whisper is one of my all time favorite songs, EVER. To not be able to hear his voice again is tragic. So many voices NEED to be silenced, but not his.
ReplyDeleteCareless Whisper is a great song to have sex to.

On 25 December 2016, George Michael died peacefully at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England at the age of 53. Ridgeley paid his respects on Twitter, saying, "Heartbroken at the loss of my beloved friend Yog", with Yog being Michael's childhood nickname.

Michael sold more than 100 million records worldwide. His 1987 debut solo album, Faith, sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Michael garnered seven number one singles in the UK and eight number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, including "Careless Whisper" and "Freedom! '90". He ranks among the best-selling British acts of all time, with Billboard magazine ranking him the 40th-most successful artist ever. Michael won various music awards throughout his 30-year career, including three Brit Awards—winning Best British Male twice, four MTV Video Music Awards, four Ivor Novello Awards, three American Music Awards, and two Grammy Awards from eight nominations. Michael, who was gay, was an active LGBT rights campaigner and HIV/AIDS charity fundraiser.[3][4][5]
ReplyDeleteIn 2004, the Radio Academy named Michael the most played artist on British radio during the period 1984–2004. The documentary A Different Story, released in 2005, covered his career and personal life. Michael's first tour in 15 years, the worldwide 25 Live tour, spanned three tours over the course of three years (2006, 2007 and 2008).
In the early hours of 25 December 2016, Michael, aged 53, was found dead in bed at his Oxfordshire home.

Kissing a Fool is my favorite
ReplyDeleteYES.
DeleteI wish that gorgeous-voiced man had written more songs like this, with that retro-jazz feel. Or done some Sinatra covers, maybe some big-band. His voice had such a resonant, full sound and what a range, damn he was born to sing that style(like Mama Cass)! He could do ANYTHING with that voice!
I'm sorry he's gone. I'm repeatedly listening to this song. Can't stop.
Wow. Whenever I'd think George Michael, I'd think 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'. I had no idea. Just wow.

This one is great! Catchy and uplifting.

Yes, Obi-Wan Kenobi himself led a gay life, at least a closeted one, as evidenced by an arrest for "cottaging"--that is, soliciting gay sex in a public park! Actor and friend Ian McKellen also recalls Guinness begging McKellen to not involve himself in the gay rights movement, or to come out publicly. McKellen has called Guinness a self-loathing homosexual.

I wasn't a fan but certainly hated to see anyone so young and vibrant pass away.
ReplyDeleteI woke up this morning and thought, damn. Donald Trump is still alive and George Michael is still dead.
ReplyDeleteI know.
DeleteWow. I'd never heard that before. It's made me forget every other version. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI never bought his records, but I've bought so few over the years. The only 1980s Brits I bought were the Police and Thomas Dolby. But of course I heard George Michael sing often and saw him on many shows and doing fundraising, and I had great respect for him. Thinking back, there were so many singers in the 1980s who did so much for the good of others. I hope, even more now, that the Miami concert will happen and that there will be something done in his name.
Thank you so much, Gryphen. What a beautiful memory of a talented man, gone much too soon.

ReplyDeletewonderful talent, silky smooth voice, unapologetic about his homosexuality once he officially came out (after he was previously outed and shamed years earlier, which shouldn't be allowed to happen, i don't care if it is a celebrity or not.) yes, tragic as he was still so young - i had no idea he was that young! his height of fame was the same era as michael jackson's and he died at 50 in 2008 or 9... rest in peace and joy and music, george!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful voice--none of that autotuned crap used to prop up certain 'stars'.
ReplyDeleteIn the mid-90s I saw him concert. As you would expect, it was a spectacular program. Something that has received little attention are his lyrics. Freedom 90 is interesting because it discusses the duality he felt between sex symbol and his real sexual identity. It also touches on the falling out with his record label.
