Courtesy of the Columbia Journalism Review:
DEAR MR. PRESIDENT ELECT:
In these final days before your inauguration, we thought it might be helpful to clarify how we see the relationship between your administration and the American press corps.
It will come as no surprise to you that we see the relationship as strained. Reports over the last few days that your press secretary is considering pulling news media offices out of the White House are the latest in a pattern of behavior that has persisted throughout the campaign: You’ve banned news organizations from covering you. You’ve taken to Twitter to taunt and threaten individual reporters and encouraged your supporters to do the same. You’ve advocated for looser libel laws and threatened numerous lawsuits of your own, none of which has materialized. You’ve avoided the press when you could and flouted the norms of pool reporting and regular press conferences. You’ve ridiculed a reporter who wrote something you didn’t like because he has a disability.
All of this, of course, is your choice and, in a way, your right. While the Constitution protects the freedom of the press, it doesn’t dictate how the president must honor that; regular press conferences aren’t enshrined in the document.
But while you have every right to decide your ground rules for engaging with the press, we have some, too. It is, after all, our airtime and column inches that you are seeking to influence. We, not you, decide how best to serve our readers, listeners, and viewers. So think of what follows as a backgrounder on what to expect from us over the next four years.
There is more but that is the main gist.
I think it's great that the press lays this out right at the beginning, even though I have every confidence that Trump will try to split and work different news agencies against each other.
In the end I think that Trump will be facing the most hostile and aggressive group of reporters to ever cover an American presidency.
And that will be very good news for the American people and bad news indeed for the Liar-in-Chief.
Just finished watching President Obama's final news press and it was outstanding!
ReplyDeleteHe's going to stay involved after his presidency which was the best news America could have heard with Trump in our future!
There is no way in Hell Trump will ever measure up to President Obama. He doesn't have the class, eloquence, smartness, vocabulary or abilities as does President Obama!
Trump IS the EVIL in our world! I feel better knowing that President Obama will be keeping a watchful eye and responding!
Just watched BO's final press conference. Excellent in so many ways--besides just seeing how smart the guy is--and it was good to hear him reiterate what Earnest said yesterday re the press's rights and responsibilities, and really emphasize how important their job is.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite question came at the end. The reporter referred to MO's speeches on the trail and there was no mistaking that a reference was being made to that o-grabbing POS and how he has assuakted women and treated women like dirt and gotten away with it. I so wished BO had been able to be a little more direct in his response by standing up for females against males who assault and demean, but I understand that he had to be careful.
Oops, I meant P-grabbing!
DeleteIf the recent past has shown us anything it is that the American press corps can't write ENOUGH about Donald Trump and be it negative or positive they covered his every tweet, speech, rally, assault charge, and bowel movement from the last 3 decades.
ReplyDeleteSeems like they have themselves a little "Trump habit" and I seriously doubt that even if he disinvites them from the Whitehouse property that they'll stop devoting 90% of their resources to writing about him.
Positive or negative, Trump's supporters eat it up and the press certainly can't seem to quit him.
Sorry but I just have to laugh at them beating their little fists on their desks now that Trump no longer requires their 24/7 media coverage.
Media guys and gals? Your nonstop coverage got him elected and guess what, now he no longer needs you. This is what a Trump Presidency looks like, better get used to it.
Have to mostly agree with your comment. The press thought they could control the presidency, and for some time they have had at least some leverage in that regards. Now they have been stripped of whatever press power they thought they had, and they don't seem to realize it. The public confidence has eroded and has long lost interest in fluff press, and now the President doesn't need them either. Oops.
DeleteThere is a new sheriff in town and the new sheriff could not give two craps about them, and he will not back down from thinly veiled threats. If anything, he enjoys the fight and will be the first one to show up to battle.
12:29: Laughable. Your new sheriff is about as good as Sheriff Arpaio. As in, not at all.
Delete1:06 what is laughable is that you think anyone who can think objectively (or doesn't think exactly like you), must be with Trump, or whoever your make believe enemy of the day is. That is exactly the kind of closed off closed minded thinking that served up the Presidency to Trump.
DeleteAbout time! But what a way to learn the lesson of what is means to have a real free press that speaks to dictatorships regardless of the costs. The ratings $$ god must die.
ReplyDeleteThis coming just after President Obama's very nice thank you to his very able press secretary, Josh Earnest. And the president was correct, "Josh Earnest" is the perfect name for a press secretary.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
Found this at a link at Malcolm Nance's Twitter. VERY good stuff in here re how Russia seems to have funneled money into the US to pay for who worked for them as they hacked away and also re Trump's camp looking connected to the Russians' influence on the election.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/article127231799.html
"Investigators are examining how money may have moved from the Kremlin to covertly help Trump win, the two sources said. One of the allegations involves whether a system for routinely paying thousands of Russian-American pensioners may have been used to pay some email hackers in the United States or to supply money to intermediaries who would then pay the hackers."
Delete"A key mission of the six-agency group has been to examine who financed the email hacks of the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta.
"The Senate Intelligence Committee has opened its own investigation into Russia’s involvement in the campaign. That panel will have subpoena POWER.
"the joint inquiry was launched when the CIA learned last spring, through a Baltic ally, of a recording indicating the Russian government was planning to funnel funds aimed at influencing the U.S. election.
Steele’s reports also alleged that Russian consulates in New York, Washington and Miami were used to deliver “tens of thousands of dollars” to Kremlin-hired operatives using fictitious names as if they were legitimate Russian-American pensioners. That “ruse” was designed to give Russia “plausible deniability,” Steele’s reports suggested.
"However, Russia does not operate a consulate in Miami."
"The BBC reported that the FBI had obtained a warrant on Oct. 15 from the highly secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court allowing investigators access to bank records and other documents about potential payments and money transfers related to Russia. One of McClatchy’s sources confirmed the report." “If, in fact, law enforcement has obtained a FISA warrant, that is an indication that additional evidence exists outside of the dossier,”
I've noticed that since Trump refused a question from Jim Acosta and called CNN "fake news" that CNN has been much more critical of Trump and his so-called "policies". I only wish they had been more critical before the election.
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying watching the GOP scramble for a replacement plan for the ACA and though I don't wish any suffering for those dependent upon Obamacare, in some ways I hope they do repeal it without an adequate replacement. That might be the beginning of the end of that worthless party. After all, they have voted to repeal the ACA over sixty times previously with no replacement. Let them reap what they have sown.
Sarah Roberts
I was just wishing the same. The media gave Trump the benefit of the doubt for over a year as they chased after every word he uttered or every letter he tweeted. During the national campaign, the media virtually ignored Hillary Clinton's campaign unless they were complaining about "deplorables" without ever showing the context of the original statement and spent 99% of their meagre attention to her campaign on the bogus email issue and, maybe, 1% of their attention on her proposals for continuing the progress begun during President Obama's tenure.
DeleteThere would have been no shut-out of the media were Hillary Clinton were about to be inaugurated. Now the media is left dealing with the monster they (and their controlling corporations) wanted - a Trump presidency, complete with never-ending insults and lies, covered up ethical, financial and political indiscretions, and the looming shadow of Vladimir Putin ready to pounce all over Europe and Asia.
Thanks a lot, US media. But I am glad that the media made the effort, albeit over a year too late, to challenge Trump's threats against them.
Beaglemom
There is an idea!! Hillary opens a magazine or a news outlet!
DeletePer russia, us are deviant, incompetent, meddlesome weirdos. lmao
ReplyDeleteJust like the rest of the world judges Americans from afar we do the same to Russians.
DeleteWhen you actually travel to Russia and meet the people, especially the regular urban and suburban folks like most Americans, we are very much the same. Humans with egotistical, narcissistic, power and wealth-hungry people in control of all aspects of our governments and using us as pawns.
We people aren't the problem, our governments and their criminal overlords are.
Nothing new there, 2:41. ANY decent historian could have told you LONG ago that it generally isn't the PEOPLE of a nation about which a government needs to be concerned, it's the GOVERNMENT of those people.

DeleteOnly one problem.
DeleteIt's taken.
The Purge: Election Year has already used it. It's on their posters. It came out in 2016 so Trump would technically be plagiarizing it. Even if he adds the exclamation mark, you know, like JEB!

Though, you can’t forget that Mr. Trump wanted to add an exclamation to the end of his slogan, which makes it super different.
Just look:

Way more excitement. Way more fantastic.

I just heard on MSNBC that Trump will keep the press room in the White House but he said the press would have wanted to move across the street because 200 journalists want credentials.
My guess is this may be Trump's way of picking and choosing the journalists who are friendly to him and kicking out the press representing America
Breitbart (Alt-Right info sight) surely will get a press credential.

MEDIATE:
Trump: I Won’t Evict Press from White House Briefing Room, But I’ll Pick Who Comes In
....“We have so many people that want to go in, so we’ll have to just have to pick the people to go into the room – I’m sure other people will be thrilled about that,” Trump said. “They’ll be begging for a much larger room very soon, you watch.”....
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/trump-i-wont-evict-press-from-white-house-briefing-room-but-ill-pick-who-comes-in/
And, of course, we know who he's pick and who he's ban.

"The current press room has about 49 seats, which are assigned by the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA).
According to WHCA President Jeff Mason, a Reuters correspondent, the association took over the job of assigning seats in the press room over two decades at the request of Republican and Democratic administrations who wanted to avoid the appearance of playing favorites."
Of course, he still owns the Post Office Hotel so he can ban the press there.

Insurers are going to help to cover people. HA HA sure as long as you have $$$$ for your premiums. The only plan he has is the word “plan”.
Trump Tells Fox News Insurers Will 'Help' To Cover People
... TRUMP: Well, you watch. We're gonna get private insurance companies to take care of a lot of the people THAT CAN AFFORD IT. That's going to take a tremendous burden off and they're going to be able to have plans. A great plan. So it's very important......
http://crooksandliars.com/2017/01/trump-pretends-health-insurance-inc-will
WTF.
DeleteWhat philanthropic insurance company is he referring to? Because that is NOT the business of insurance companies. Their job is to deny you the insurance you paid for while taking as much money from you as possible.
Private insurance companies have always provided insurance to THOSE THAT COULD AFFORD IT. Duh. That's what they do.
It's the people who can't afford it who are the problem. They are going to go back to gumming up the ER instead of an office visit and people will be sicker or die from preventable stuff because they don't go to the doctor at all.
You know, the way it used to be.
Michael Moore nailed it in Sicko and Where should we invade next?
We all know what the answer is. Universal healthcare. Single Payer.
We also know the Republicans will never agree to it. Their health care plan is don't get sick and if you do, die quickly.

‘He has this deep fear that he is not a legitimate president’

From his pick of nominees for posts in his cabinet to his belligerent use of Twitter (our conversation was a day before he traded barbs with Congressman John Lewis) to his unwillingness to cut ties with his business to avoid conflicts of interest, they see the same person they’ve always seen—the consummate classroom troublemaker; a vain, insecure bully; and an anti-institutional schemer, as adept at “gaming the system” as he is unashamed. As they look ahead to his inauguration speech in two days, and to his administration beyond, they feel confident predicting that he will run the country much as he has run his company. For himself.
“He’s not going to be that concerned with the actual competent administration of the government,” D’Antonio said. “It’s going to be what he seems to be gaining or losing in public esteem. So almost like a monarch. The figurehead who rallies people and gets credit for things.”....................
.... Do you think he is going to pick fights with leaders of other countries? In other words, is there any indication that he would be able to separate the interests of the country now from his own personal pique?
Blair: Zero.
O’Brien: Absolutely not. There will be no divide there. The whole thing has been a vanity show from the second he ran to the Republican Convention. I think we can expect to see the same on Inauguration Day.

It turns out that Trump isn’t bringing jobs back to America. Corporations have quickly learned to reissue old growth plans as new to avoid the wrath of the president-elect’s Twitter. In other words, Trump is being duped by corporate America.
ReplyDeleteNBC News reported that companies are afraid of having their stock price dinged by a negative Trump tweet, so they are taking old or existing expansion plans and reissuing them as new, “But peel back a layer and the promises come with some caveats. Obama Puts Trump To Shame By Delivering A Lesson In Total Presidential Class
ReplyDeleteDuring his final press conference, President Obama thanked the press and demonstrated to Donald Trump how the President Of The United States supposed to treat the free press.
Obama thanked the press and said, “I have enjoyed working with all of you. That, of course, doesn’t mean that I’ve enjoyed every story that you have filed, but that’s the point of this relationship. You’re not supposed to be sycophants. You’re supposed to be skeptics. You’re supposed to ask me tough questions. You’re not supposed to be complimentary, but you’re supposed to cast a critical eye on folks who hold enormous power, and make sure that we are accountable to the people who sent us here.”
President Obama understands how the president and press relationship is supposed to work. The media is not a president’s cheering section. The free press does not exist to give the president good publicity. Presidents don’t get rate the media as good or bad based on the tone of the coverage.
