Alaska's tax revenues for Marijuana growers in December reaches $145,000. Up from $81,000 in November.

Courtesy of ADN:

The second full month of marijuana tax revenue has entered the state treasury.

In December, 13 marijuana cultivators paid $145,800 to the Alaska Department of Revenue's Tax Division, revenue audit supervisor Kelly Mazzei wrote Tuesday.

Under Alaska law, growers pay the state's tax. Bud is taxed at $50 per ounce, and other parts of the plant, like the stems and leaves, are taxed at $15 per ounce.

A total of 167 pounds of marijuana bud and 46 pounds of other parts were sold in December, Mazzei wrote.

You may remember that back in November I reported that Alaska had collected $81,100 in tax revenue from the growers.

So this is a significant increase and a real indication that the marijuana industry is likely to inject some serious money into the rapidly emptying Alaska state coffers.

As I have explained before there is no way it will replace the dwindling oil tax revenue, but at least it is something.

Until Humpty Trumpty decides to get their hands on it as contraband income.

That's really peanuts as tax revenue goes. Are they sell that little,or is the tax too low?

Alaska has a small population compared with Colorado, did you consider that? Plus the industry has Just Gotten Started. Check out how much $$ Colorado has pulled in since their foray into legalization.

Well that's the point of the question. Are sales so low it's really not going to be a good tax revenue producer,or is the tax too low? Colorado also has the advantage of not being in a remote location. Just wondering why a state that is suffering because they relied on a mostly single industry for tax dollars is going with such small potatoes to change that.I come from an oil producing state that has had to learn to diversify. Really you shouldn't be looking at Colorado to predict the future of something in Alaska, and even Colorado will see numbers go down as other states come on line with sales.

I shouldn't say this because it may give you-know-who some ideas . . . but . . . maybe Sarah and the Palin Clan Freak Show could go into the weed business!!!! After all, they are now broke and the stupid click bait website along with the weight loss tea just aren't cutting it.

On second thought, never happen. Track would smoke up all the profits, no one in the family is willing or able to put in the work, and they likely could not pass the criminal background check to open an operation.

None would pass a background check, but I think it would benefit all of them(and all of society) if they would chose to recreate with just cannabis instead of......all that other stuff.

Funny I was thinking along the same lines, but it was Sarah smoking all the profits.

Holy shit, Uncle G., thanks for some good news. I needed it.

Sorry to hear of Alaska's revenue woes. Does any of this track back to Palin's 'governing', i.e., money shifting?
I read that the PDF may be used to make up the shortfall in the state operating budget...did I mis-read & mis-remember that? Isn't the PDF supposed to be untouchable?

Not at $50 an oz. It's a step in the right direction, but that sort of tax rate tells me that politicians still aren't taking this seriously.

Akin to levying a $50/per cartridge on magazines over, say 8 for a 9mm mag.

I've always supported the concept of so-called "sin taxes", but only when utilized and earmarked for specific programs designed to mitigate potential problems associated with that particular "sin", and also within a reasonable, meaningful rate... especially with MJ, as it's potential harm is unknown and unstudied unlike alcohol or tobacco.

Your last sentiment is false. Cannabis has been studied scientifically, all you have to do is use your fingers to type in "cannabis research" or something similar. be prepared to read your ass off, as the amount of scientific info may astound you.
The anecdotal evidence of the health benefits of cannabis are also astounding.
isn't it strange that not ONE PERSON has died from plain old cannabis? Can't say that about alcohol or tobacco.

Anecdotal evidence, no matter how "astounding" doesn't cut it in terms of research. That's like saying someone is educated because they took part-time classes at a junior college before dropping out to have a baby.

Here's an anecdote for you.My 62 year old brother who can't get out of bed without a joint, doesn't work, lives in his daughters garage, and sleeps most of the day.He has been like this his entire life, and has smoked since he was 15. What is the cause and effect? No one knows, because it's not research.Maybe it's the pot that affected his adolescent brain .(Yes,shown by studies). Maybe he was raised to be lazy(then why aren't I?)Maybe it's something else. He has had Prostate Cancer, one of the conditions supposedly cured by cannabis. Yeah, more studies is probably a good idea.

Are we related 6:30am? I have a relative that sounds just like that. Sorry peoole, byt marijuana/cannibus/whatever is not the panacea it's made out to be. It's no more effective than pkacebo on much of what the miracle claims refer to.

Alaskans are going to have to give up their precious PDF dollars for this to make any kind of dent into a budget shortfall. Maybe then certain people won't be breeding so much. Maybe people like Levi and Track should smoke more weed so they'll be to stoned to kill defenseless animals and post their trophy pics of bears and mountain goats on their social media.
