I do not typically use words like eviscerate, or overdo hyperbole, however Maher really outdid himself last night.
Here is the transcript:
“Someone has to tell me what’s magic about a capital R,” Bill Maher asked. “The kind that goes after your name if you are a Republican. Because if you have one of those, you can get away with pretty much anything when it comes to selling out, cursing out, or compromising your own country.”
“When it was Hillary Clinton with an unsecured email server, Republicans wanted to ‘lock her up,”He continued. “But President Trump still uses the unsecured Android phone he had before he got elected. And he has been warned that with an old consumer grade phone like that someone could easily hack into his Twitter account and start posting crazy messages. And how would we be able to tell?”
"So a couple of weeks before the Superbowl Bill O'Reilly asked Trump why he always defended Putin, who O'Reilly said was a killer? A reasonable question, since the last two guys who were as cozy as Putin and Trump held their bilateral talks on Brokeback Mountain."
"But again Trump took Putin's side over America, saying 'We got killers here too. You think our country's so innocent?' If a Democrat said that before the Superbowl they would be in Guantanamo Bay by halftime. Same as they would they did this."
“But if you have the magic (R), no problem. Trump repeatedly said he was going to donate to military charities. Then didn’t. Then lied about it. He compared our intelligence agencies to Nazis. He said McCain, who spent five years in a Vietnamese prison, wasn’t a war hero because ‘I like people who weren’t captured.”
“I gotta got to say to all you flag waving Right Wingers who always say, ‘I am not just going to stand here and let you run down America,’ You are standing there and letting Trump run down America,” Maher remarked. “Donald Trump could go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and say, ‘Maybe if he had done something he wouldn’t be so unknown.’ And Republicans would be okay with that too.”
"When Trump said I can stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters, he wasn't making a joke. He's never made a joke. Unless his entire life is some kind of Andy Kaufman style performance art, in which case stop it."
"No he was simply stating an actual fact for once, which is if you have the magic (R) after your name you can drive a Hummer through a day care center and Fox News will say the babies were 'asking for it.'"
"Meanwhile in an alternative universe where a Democrat is President, Obama once said 'We have no been perfect.' And for eight years the Republicans screamed that he was on an eight year apology tour. They lost their shit whenever there as a picture of him committing high crimes like not having his hand over his heart during a song. Or saluting with coffee in his hand."
Maher then pointed out that W. once saluted with a dog in his arms, and that he sat frozen for seven minutes after hearing the country was under attack on 9-11.
"And Republicans defended THAT and we all just accept this. America is the Republican party's bitch, and they can criticize and betray her, but YOU can't. Even though Obama spent two terms talking up the troops, talking up the country, how much he loved it, how 'in no other country is my story even possible.' It didn't matter, the conservatives all nodded when Rudy Giuliani said 'I do not believe that President Obama loves America.' As opposed to Giuliani who happened to be mayor on 9-11 so that made him America's mayor and a hero whose great act of heroism is that nothing fell on his head. To paraphrase Donald Trump, I like mayors who don't let towers collapse.
"A few weeks ago an old but very smoking gun emerged from the Nixon era. When it came out that in 1968 when President Lyndon Johnson was trying to end the war in Vietnam candidate Richard Nixon was actively, purposefully, undermining the peace talks because he wanted the war to go on so he could have it as an election issue."
"You would think that the America First crowd would find that a bridge too far. Fuck no."
"Dick Cheney once outed a CIA agent just to say 'Fuck you' to her husband. Reagan sold weapons to Iran, a country they all want to bomb now, in an brazened defiance of American law. And instead of being impeached he was elevated to sainthood and now rides horses in heaven with Jesus.”
“Why do Republicans get away with this? Why do they have patriotic immunity? America is like a dysfunctional family. The Democrats, are the older mature son who works hard and does everything right, but somehow it is never good enough. And the Republicans are the young asshole son who is a fuck-up and it doesn’t matter how many times he crashes the Camaro, daddy buys him a new one.”
"I know it's not really important, like which department stores are selling Ivanka's panty liners. You know ALL of America's intelligence agencies say a foreign power tampered with our election to favor the Republican, and they say also that they don't trust that republican, our president, with our state secrets, and yet the theme of Trumps inaugural was 'America First.' Please, his ego is first, his hotels are second, Russia's third, I'd be surprised if America made the top ten."
See, what did I tell you?
Those are excellent points to which I would really like a Republican to try and provide a reasonable response.

ReplyDeleteWhat difference does it make to 'eviscerate' Republicans and then give a voice and oxygen and promotion to Far Right idols like Nazi Milo and Tomi Lahren? I don't know what Maher's game is but I'm not wasting my time with them.
ReplyDeleteTime was you could switch on Real Time and know you'd hear intelligent people discussing important issues- however boisterous it got. Not any more.
Because if a person is a mature adult with a strong grasp of current events and history, you are not afraid of dissenting opinions. You listen, and then intelligently show why you think facts support your position verses the other persons.

So glad he told the truth about the damn Republicans, they get away with murder, then accuse Democrats of all kinds of shit. Time we gave them back what they have been giving out for decades. Screw them, they are not patriots, they are traitors.
ReplyDeleteI loved Bill M's examples. No matter what Trump does, it is fine by his fans. Every day, I drive my husband nuts with my own examples, which go to very far extremes and they're pretty ludicrous...well, except that this is how brainwashed his fans are or just plain dumb or just plain morally gone and evil like he is.
Delete34 years together, the quickest way to needle my husband is to reply, "okay, Trumpster" to anything he says. Which he is not, and I giggle at the backlash.
DeleteGuess Who Got Two Giant Windfalls This Week? Millionaires!
ReplyDeleteOn the day that millionaires got a pass from paying Social Security taxes, they also got a special gift from the Republican Senate: Mick Mulvaney’s confirmation as head of the Office of Management and Budget.
The Senate has confirmed Donald Trump’s pick for White House Budget Director, Rep. Mick Mulvaney, in a 51-49 vote. Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican, joined with every Democrat in the chamber in opposing Mulvaney’s nomination as a group of lawmakers and experts spoke on the Hill in support of Social Security — and millionaires stopped paying their Social Security taxes for the year.....

Donald Trump’s ghostwriter said last year that he would try to shut down the free press
ReplyDelete...Swartz spent almost a year shadowing Trump to write the former businessman’s book, The Art of the Deal.
Last year, he told The Independent that he believed he knew Trump well enough to know the president would try to attack the free press.
Swartz said:
'On day one he would end a free press. In any way that he could, he would use the government to shut down a free press, and listen, he has plenty of precedents for doing that, including his hero Vladimir Putin.'
Earlier this year, Russian journalist Alexey Kovalev wrote an article that went viral, warning American journalists to stand up to Trump.
He wrote about the restrictions on free press in Vladimir Putin’s Russia, and he said quite a few things Trump has said and done remind him of Russia’s prime minister.

Delete...In a speech and several interviews, DeVos made clear that she is planning to push the expansion of school choice — charter schools, voucher programs and other alternatives to traditional public schools.
ReplyDeleteIn an interview with Axios, excerpts of which were published on Feb. 17, she said:
“I expect there will be more public charter schools. I expect there will be more private schools. I expect there will be more virtual schools. I expect there will be more schools of any kind that haven’t even been invented yet.”
The one thing she said she didn’t expect more of was traditional public schools.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2017/02/17/devos-critics-want-to-make-my-life-a-living-hell/
DeVos criticized teachers at D.C. school she visited — and they are not having it
...DeVos, who has no professional experience in public education, is an avowed proponent of voucher schools, charter schools, online schools and other alternatives to traditional public schools. Teachers across the country have been galled by what they see as her lack of faith in — and understanding of — the public schools that educate nearly nine in 10 of the nation’s children.
Jefferson educators found her comments about their work hard to take: On Friday evening, the school responded to DeVos via its Twitter account, taking exception to the education secretary’s characterization of Jefferson teachers.
“We’re about to take her to school,” the first of 11 rapid-fire tweets said.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/education/wp/2017/02/18/devos-criticized-teachers-at-d-c-school-she-visited-and-they-are-not-having-it/
But if there’s a lesson here, it’s this. DeVos—who was only barely confirmed by the Senate—doesn’t seem to have much credibility with many of those involved with public schools. It also seems she has plenty of homework to do in order to actually build it

DeleteDonald Trump is trying to prove media bias with an incredibly biased survey
ReplyDeleteFor those of you who never took a research class in college, a "leading question" is a form of survey question that is designed to trick the participant into responding with exactly the answer the researcher wants.
Say, for instance, Hunt's ketchup researchers were trying to produce a survey that proved Heinz ketchup is bad. They could write a question like this:
"Last year, 2,000 people choked to death on french fries covered in Heinz ketchup because it does not have the right kind of viscosity to prevent asphyxiation. Hunt's does. Do you agree Hunt's is better?"
Since no one is pro-people dying while eating delicious french fries, people respond yes, and boom. Survey says, "100 percent of people think Hunt's ketchup is better than Heinz.
Here is a question from President Donald Trump's just-released survey on media bias called the "Mainstream Media Accountability Survey."
"Do you believe that contrary to what the media says, raising taxes does not create jobs?"
Incomprehensible syntax aside, by portraying in the very first instance of the sentence that the media is wrong, it lends itself to having people agree with the response Trump wants.
A good researcher, interested in finding out what people really thought, instead of attempting to create an echo chamber, would perhaps write it as something like a two-parter
"How do you believe the tax rate affects job creation?" and, as a follow-up, "Do you believe the media accurately represents the relationship between the tax rate and job growth?"
Boom. No bias.
http://www.dailydot.com/layer8/donald-trump-media-bias/
Donald Trump is upset that Democrats are taking his biased survey on media bias
Yes, that's correct. The president believes, once again, that another poll is rigged. This time, it's a poll he's created himself.
"The President emailed you to take the urgent Mainstream Media Accountability Survey. Since then, mainstream media outlets have viciously attacked it ... and thousands of Democrats have taken it to try to sabotage the results. Which is why we need your IMMEDIATE help as one of President Trump's biggest supporters," the email reads.

DeleteRepublican Constitution Blitzkrieg
ReplyDelete..A Republican controlled Congress knows their support would suffer if people had the ability to listen to the pros and cons of these laws. As a result, they are abusing their power and ignoring the intents of our Constitution by passing laws without public debate.
In a gambit for even more power, the Republican administration is also attacking the Judicial Branch and the media. This is because these groups can oppose President Trump’s quest for total unquestioned authority. A White House spokesman recently said this week that what the Administration is doing should not be questioned! Is this America or a fascist state?
Democracy is built on majority rule by the people, but it only works when there is an open exchange of ideas for voters and legislators to make informed decisions. The suppression of open debate in Congress of these new laws destroys democracy, and heads us towards a fascist state. If you want to understand why all of this is happening, keep reading…..

ReplyDeleteTrump's Inside Team Tightens Travel Ban to Avoid Constitutional Objections; Leaves National Security Council Out in the Cold
Donald Trump’s controversial executive order banning travel from seven Muslim-majority countries is being tightened up to get around legal and constitutional objections with minimal input from the National Security Council, the Guardian has learned.
The White House policy director, Stephen Miller, is at the helm as the process for refugee and immigration policy is going through the domestic policy council, which does not include most of the government’s foreign policy or security-related agencies.
Trump made clear at his chaotic 77-minute press conference on Thursday “we’re issuing a new executive action next week that will comprehensively protect our country” at the same time as fighting the executive order which was blocked by the courts.
The goal of the new order is to bolster a signature initiative against ongoing legal and constitutional scrutiny, rather than revise it in a substantive fashion, relax its restrictions or consider any deleterious consequences it has on national security, according to Guardian sources.
The process means domestic political concerns are given greater priority and consideration of their national security impact is marginalized despite the impact on US relations with much of the world.
Observers consider the NSC’s diminished role symptomatic of Trump’s approach to governance and expressed alarm that Trump has not corrected course.

ReplyDeleteMcCain attacks Trump and defends the press on Meet the Press.
ReplyDelete"The Arizona Republican, a frequent critic of Trump, was responding to a tweet in which Trump accused the media of being “the enemy of the American people.”
The international order established after World War Two was built in part on a free press, McCain said in an excerpt of an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" that was released in advance of the full Sunday morning broadcast.
"I hate the press. I hate you especially," he told interviewer Chuck Todd from an international security conference in Munich. "But the fact is we need you. We need a free press. We must have it. It's vital."
"If you want to preserve - I'm very serious now - if you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started," he continued.
"They get started by suppressing free press. In other words, a consolidation of power. When you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press. And I'm not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I'm just saying we need to learn the lessons of history," McCain said."

Maybe it's an effect of "white male privilege," or feelings of entitlement. It's hardwired into the American psyche at this point (look at the founding fathers, who look just like them...). The white men who are "woke" are gonna have a hard time.
ReplyDeleteFoundational change is possible, but it's going to take a profound economic upheaval - like the coming wave of automation - for things to really change on a fundamental level. But the last gasps of the white male are going to be seismic. I think the wave that took Trump into office is evident of one of these lasts gasps.
On topic, Maher is pretty good at outlining issues with the while men (R)'s, but he has a notable track record of misogyny and being dismissive towards minority issues. Hard for me to take him seriously sometimes.
