Cowardly Texas Congressman Louie Gohmert uses the shooting of Gabby Giffords as an excuse to avoid town halls. Giffords calls him out over it.

Louie Gohmert, who for all the world looks like an extra on the "Andy Griffith Show," posted this bullshit excuse on his website:

Unfortunately, at this time there are groups from the more violent strains of the leftist ideology, some even being paid, who are preying on public town halls to wreak havoc and threaten public safety. Threats are nothing new to me and I have gotten my share as a felony judge. However, the House Sergeant at Arms advised us after former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords was shot at a public appearance, that civilian attendees at Congressional public events stand the most chance of being harmed or killed—just as happened there.

Notice there is no mention of the fact that there would be far less risk at these town halls if everybody in the country could not buy a gun as easily as they buy a pint of milk.

It should also be mentioned that the shooting of Giffords happened way back in 2011, and Gohmert is just NOW getting frightened by it?

For her part Gabby Giffords has no intention of allowing this chicken shit to use her unfortunate incident as an excuse not to do his job.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Being the victim of gun violence didn't stop her from holding public events, she said in a statement. Since stepping down from Congress, Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, have made many public appearances on behalf of their group Americans for Responsible Solutions, which advocates for gun safety reform.

She further noted that Ron Barber, her former district director who was also injured in the shooting, held town halls after succeeding her in Congress.

"I was shot on a Saturday morning. By Monday morning my offices were open to the public. Ron Barber — at my side that Saturday, who was shot multiple times, then elected to Congress in my stead — held town halls. It's what the people deserve in a representative," Giffords said. On Tuesday, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) invoked the 2011 shooting that killed six people as a reason not to hold a public town hall in his district.

It just shows that it is well past time to replace these cowardly little candy asses with strong Representatives who are not afraid to face criticism, or even a bullet or two.

Of course, the main point he refuses to acknowledge is that if he would DO HIS JOB and not follow the party line, the constituents wouldn't be so damned ANGRY!

And before some troll tries to make a mark here, there is a MAJOR difference between violent constituents and constituents demanding the Rep to do what they were elected to do - represent his/her people! And that means listening to their concerns and voting as THEy wish - NOT the party

And before that same troll tries to tell us this POS has a right to be scared because of all the gun violence perpetrated by the Left, that troll better be prepared to PROVE any claims of such violence. Do NOT try to pull a Kellyanne! Alternative facts don't work here. WE prefer REAL facts.

Oh. And one more thing, be prepared to prove the people in those meetings were paid when you try that crap! That's bullshit created by Humpty Trumpty et al. And how does HE know? Because it was HE who started paying people to attend his rallies!

And while the trill is at it - can we talk about who is responsible for the proliferation of the guns that are requisite for GUN violence. Then again, GOMERt would likely be afraid of rotten tomatoes too.

Yeah. The NRA has a stronghold on America. Why is that. Supplying guns to terrorist, mentally ill and every tom dick kid and jane has been a serious deadly mess. They should be held liable and accountable.

Today's Republicans don't avoid meeting their constituents because they're afraid of guns. They do it because they're afraid of being confronted with the truth: that they - the Republican Representatives and Senators - are NOT working for their electorate. The R's are working for an AGENDA.

Clowns like Trump, Gohmert, Brownback, McConnel, et. al. aren't servants of the people...
they serve some special interests who have never been elected: Bannon, Norquist, Koch, etc.

Meet the 16-year-old Canadian girl who took down Milo Yiannopoulos

...The teen was moved to dig up footage on Yiannopoulos when she heard that he’d been invited to speak at the highest profile gathering of conservatives each year in America, the 2017 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). She defines herself as “very socially liberal,” but leans right on economics and foreign policy. Yiannopoulos, who has built his personal brand on anti-Muslim, anti-feminism, and general bigotry, exemplifies the place where she doesn’t believe the conservative movement should go.

“I see Milo as this embodiment of the awfulness you see over the past few years with the general tilt of millennial conservatism,” said the teen. “It’s diverged from this traditional conservatism so much. You’ve seen it essentially become full of awfulness and all about attacking the left and not about actual principles. It has nothing to do with conservative ideology so much as it has with opposing the leftists, SJWs, and so on and so forth.”

Within days of his old statements coming to light, Yiannopoulos lost his spot at CPAC, his book deal, and his job at the ultra-conservative website Breitbart.

Tom Cotton is one of many Republicans who want to destroy the Affordable Care Act. And like many other Republicans, he decided to hold a town hall event in Arkansas to address the concerns of his constituents. But he never could have prepared himself for the anger that the crowd showed over the Republican plan to strip away health insurance, and one woman in particular stole the show by telling the story of her dying husband and asked Cotton what kind of insurance HE has.

...If we take a cue from what this brave women did at this meeting, this is what needs to happen at every single town hall, at every single rally, at every single campaign stop of any Republican or Democrat that wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act. They need to understand that this action has real-world consequences. We know that the Koch brothers want it repealed. We know that the wealthy elite want it repealed because they want those tax breaks. But sometimes, occasionally, you got to go with the people. That’s what they’re trying to say: “We know you rule for the Kochs, we know you rule for the 1%, but for the love of God, on this one issue, show a little humanity.” That’s what that woman was trying to get Senator Tom Cotton to understand. I don’t think he did. I don’t think he got the message. I don’t think he comprehends it, but if we keep it up, eventually it’s going to get through their heads.

    Here Come The Gags

First, remember when Sean Spicer had the following comment about access from the press?

Unlike Trump campaign events, Trump’s White House will “absolutely not” prohibit certain reporters or outlets from covering the president, Spicer said.

“Look, look, he’s not going to bounce anybody out,” Spicer said. “He has a healthy belief in the First Amendment and the understanding and the role of a free press.” [politico]

However, today we find that some major outlets weren’t on the list for an off camera briefing from the White House. Note this isn’t the Presidential Daily Briefing we usually see on C-SPAN, or the networks.

That said, the list is informative – Breitbart, Fox, and the Washington Times were on it. No LA Times, no Politico, and no New York Times. The press group for off camera sessions may be smaller than the briefing events, but the inclusions on the list are as instructive as the size of the group.

If we’re putting the jig saw puzzle together, or connecting the dots, remember that this happened as the president was doubling down on his “fake news” attacks. He’s fine tuning this pitch. First, declare the media “enemies of the people,” Next, add a line about “the fake news” is an “enemy of the people.” One more step, say “I support the free press, but “fake news” shouldn’t be allowed to misinform the people.

This is the logical result of the premise that “I am the only one who will tell you the truth” propaganda technique slathered on by right wing radio broadcasters for decades. The trumpster is speaking to an audience already conditioned to believe only what they are told by Fox News.

By restricting access from major networks and publications in one format, the press may become conditioned to restrictions in others. At least that’s what they might be hoping.

This is beyond dangerous. Banishing media outlets is about the most un-American attack on our democracy that we have ever seen. The first thing dictators do is try to control and shut down the free press. This a direct attack and assault on the Fourth Estate, and this administration is one that is more corrupt than that of Richard Nixon, with a president who routinely lies with impunity to the American public. If you want to save our republic, you’ll speak out against this assault on the free press and on the First Amendment before it’s too late.

Investigative journalists – find some REAL dirt on this White House, and get rid of them once and for all.

    3. Since all trump and his minions do is spout lies, not wasting time listening to their bullshit can free the press up to do real investigative journalism and tell the people the truth about what trump is actually doing while spicer and his other goons are bullshitting the American people.

It will be much harder to shut people up than it was 80 years ago. The next civil war might be fought with pens, pencils, laptops, and cameras.

Trump would be better off reeling in every single media outlet and buttering them up with how much he respects them. He evidently has never heard that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

Trump Tweets His Dumbest Attack On FBI To Date And Promptly Gets Ripped APART By Twitter

...Wow, Trump seems panicked for some reason. Could it be that his campaign had almost constant contact with members of the Russian government? Michael Flynn’s discussion of sanctions with the Russian ambassador that the Trump administration lied about? The fact that The Donald literally asked Vladimir Putin and his cronies to hack his political opponents and the Russian dictator obliged? Or is it that the FBI just told Trump to f*ck off when his team demanded that they make a public statement that would discredit any idea that he and his compatriots are lying traitors?

Maybe all of the above — but whatever the reason, the folks on Twitter were there to mock him for his stupidity:

This morning, I watched a video of Ellen Degeneres, with the funding from Walmart, give the entire senior class at a high school in Brooklyn, NY four year scholarships to college, to include other seniors in that community; a $1.6M investment.
In their particular community of Brooklyn, 4% of adults have a college education...4%.
Two incredible women stepped in and, last year, 93% of their class graduated high school, an unprecedented number in the history of their school.
The look on these kids' faces when they learned they were going to college was something I don't see often.
Our country is so beautiful. There is kindness everywhere, some of us just choose not to look for it.
Our priority in life should be making sure our children, no matter what ethnicity, religion or monetary class they fall under, have a fighting chance to become successful.
I guarantee you a vast majority of these kids didn't know what they would do once high school ended, and now they have purpose, hope and faith in themselves.
It started with two educators who wanted to make a difference, and it ended with a brighter future for children who suffered in poverty the majority of their lives.
Don't tell me this country isn't great. This country is phenomenal.

Gryphen, I read Gabby Gifford's post and I support what she said (in addition to your quote). Here it is:

“Many of the members of Congress who are refusing to hold town halls and listen to their constituents concerns are the very same politicians that have opposed commonsense gun violence prevention policies and have allowed the Washington gun lobby to threaten the safety of law enforcement and everyday citizens in our schools, businesses, places of worship, airports, and movie theaters.

“To the politicians who have abandoned their civic obligations, I say this: Have some courage. Face your constituents. Hold town halls."

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/rubio-rude-and-stupid_us_58b05ce6e4b0780bac28b65a?

And Paul Ryan is ducking town halls in favor of meeting with deep pockets donors. Yep, he'd rather suck up for money than for votes.

    https://theintercept.com/2017/02/24/town-hall-meeting/

"MANY OF THE SAME congressional Republicans who are ducking their constituents by refusing to hold town hall events during this week’s recess are actively offering to meet with donors — for a fee.

The Intercept and the Center for Media and Democracy have obtained fundraiser invitations for a number of GOP lawmakers who rejected calls to meet with constituents.

The President’s Day congressional recess is a period with no official work and designed for reconnecting with the folks back home. But after some early town halls drew hostile crowds, particularly inflamed by Trump administration policies on immigration and health care, more than 200 GOP lawmakers are skipping them instead.

Speaker Paul Ryan’s constituents in Wisconsin asked him for a town hall meeting during recess, but Ryan’s staff remained cagey about his whereabouts. The real reason he wasn’t hanging out back home in Janesville? Ryan prioritized meeting with wealthy contributors over constituents."
