Still one of the greatest moments in television history. I think today it is even more relevant than ever.

I literally get emotional when I watch this scene. It never fails to hit me hard fight in the feels.

Any of us who consider ourselves patriots must always recognize America's flaws, because how else could we possibly improve the country?

Right now it seems we are worse off then I EVER seen it in my entire life.

That is not hyperbole, that is fact.

So THIS is the time that we do what we are the most famous for doing.

We buckle down, take to the streets, and make sure that we exercise those freedoms that we are so proud of having, until we get our country back on track so that someday we can once again brag that we are "The greatest country on earth."

Trump Says There’s Been No Russia Contact — Of Course, Much Of What He Says Is Untrue

The falsehood-prone president now faces the problem of selling Americans on something important.

...Of course, given his track record with veracity, should Americans take him at face value?

“They should not, because the president and most of his senior advisers are serial liars. It’s that simple,” said Eliot Cohen, a senior State Department official under Bush and a participant of his National Security Council. “I cannot believe a word that comes out of the president’s mouth, the spokesman’s mouth, the vice president’s mouth, because, frankly, he’s morally
    compromised now, too.”

...Trump had the lowest percentage of truthful statements of any recent presidential candidate, according to the fact-checking group PolitiFact. Of the hundreds of Trump claims the group has analyzed since he entered the race in 2015 through his first month in office, a full 70 percent are rated “mostly false,” “false,” or “pants on fire.”

“What can I say? We nominated a fabulist,” one Republican National Committee member told The Huffington Post on condition of anonymity at the time. “There’s no defending that.”

Presidential historians, meanwhile, appeared to form a consensus that Trump’s candidacy was setting a new bar with its falsehoods. “In American history, we’ve never had a major presidential candidate who fabricated facts with the regularity of Donald Trump,” Douglas Brinkley, a history professor at Rice University, said last summer. “He just simply makes up things.”

I can't be the only one that has been in a deep funk for three months. Like you, Gryph, I never thought I would be witnessing something as this.

I'd like to get in every RWNJ's face and ask, "how can you call yourself a Christian, yet support this @sshole?" Melania's reading of the Lord's Prayer seemed almost blasphemous.

I truly thank you for this blog.

The evangelicals believe in a violent God they cower beneath until the Second Coming when only they will be redeemed (for loyalty) and everybody else sent to Hell.

It is a violently pathological belief system based on thousands of years of brainwashing and their conflation of church and state is deepening daily.

There is no reasoning with them. There is no fact that is more important than their opinions. They have been warned The Devil (in the shape of anyone questioning them) is testing their loyalty which only gets stronger when attacked. Think cult.

But know that you are not alone in this funk: We are in a state of emergency and many good people will have to step up and will do great things, even die, to preserve the freedom to feel safe again.

    5. Barbara, you're right that Trump supporters can't be reasoned with. But I don't see many of them perceiving Trump as being anointed by God, or having the expectation that he will usher in the Apocalypse. That's not what most of them say when they're questioned.

White nationalism (i.e., racism) is a strong theme among them. Making America great again seems to mean that there's a white man in the White House again. They like Trump's anti-immigration intentions, his promise to restore jobs (for white Americans,) and his pro-gun stance. Some of them even like Trump's blatant sexism. Witness the anti-Hillary "Lock Her Up" chants at Trump rallies, and the Melania Trump fan clubs that have sprung up on Facebook, where the fans gush about how much better Melania is than Michelle Obama.

The evangelical Christianity espoused by some Trump followers has only been around for a few hundred years, so I don't think Trump's presidency is a result of thousands of years of brainwashing. Trump himself says that he's a Presbyterian, which is not a fundamentalist evangelical denomination

A few religious nuts tried to portray Obama as the anti-Christ. It's reasonable to think of Trump as the anti-Obama. Those who felt threatened by a brainy, cultured, articulate, gorgeous, and sophisticated black man (whose wife shared those attributes) holding the office of President, now welcome a crude, unattractive white man with a limited vocabulary, an America-first attitude, and a sexpot trophy wife. He speaks their language, and he addresses their fears. His simple-minded statements about political issues are more to their liking than Obama's intellectual and globally-oriented approach.

Some pundits predict that Trump's term will not last four years, either through his own doing or that of the GOP operatives who find him a useful idiot.

Regardless, the US has survived worse than Trump. His time will pass, and the nation will thrive.

The Inexcusable Republican ‘Soft-Response’ to Trump’s Russia Scandal

...Unfortunately, far too few Republicans seem eager to contain Trump, let alone transcend him – or even question him.

We see rationalizing in abundance, a normalization of every example of Trump extremism. Even Rep. Taylor, in cautioning that “words matter” because the world is watching, seems to want to avoid criticizing Trump too strongly. His comments about Trump learning on the job smacks more of excuse making than explanation.

Even Kinzinger allowed that he didn’t know if Flynn’s discussion with the Russians about Obama’s sanctions, while “wrong” was “illegal” but this is about as strong a reprimand as we get from Republicans.

You know how bad it’s has gotten when it’s left to Fox News’ Chris Wallace to tell off Reince Priebus on air.

The GOP has failed America. They have permitted a would-be tyrant to ascend to the presidency and now that he is there, they have refused not only to fight him but in Kristol’s words, even to “contain” him. And as Paul Krugman and others have warned, the consequences of not containing Trump are very serious indeed.

Americans throughout the country need to RESIST and OBSTRUCT the Republicans throughout the country (especially in the U.S.Congress and State Legislatures)!

Republicans need to be voted out of office in the next election cycle should they run for reelection.

Begin w/Lisa Murkowski of Alaska who is nothing more than a puppet for Mitch McConnell (of Kentucky) who led the obstruction against President Obama from the minute he took his first oath of office as POTUS. Both of these individuals have seats in our United States Congress.

Trump is the very worst person we could have as potus. He does NOT represent me or the majority of Americans. And, he was not elected by the majority of American voters - Hillary Clinton was actually that winner.

    Subpoena his taxes.

I predicted early on that Trump would never, ever, under any condition, reveal his tax returns. His whole psychological edifice is based on his brand.

His tax returns would reveal the truth. Resigning the presidency “on principle”, as he would spin it, is far less of an existential threat to his psyche than for the world to discover the narcissist’s true net worth.

If either the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, chaired by Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), or the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Rob Johnson (R-WI), were to open an investigation into Trump’s likely abundant conflicts-of-interest, illegal leasehold, and emoluments clause violations, it would be impossible to do so without the tax returns.

Trump, of course, would fight the subpoenas, but he would have little chance of prevailing in court. Once the final determination were made that he had to produce his tax returns, Trump would resign the office, uttering some psychobabble about his belief in the Constitution (that he shows few signs of having read nor caring that he hasn’t read it) and right to privacy.

The reason that neither Chaffetz nor Johnson will open investigations is that, once open, Trump’s demise is guaranteed regardless of the particular findings because they would have to subpoena his taxes. He will resign the presidency rather than release his taxes. [He will negotiate a deal that the subpoenas will be quashed upon his leaving office].

Rubles-to-rum, Vladimir Putin already has Trump’s tax returns. If I perceived the depths of Trump’s extreme psychological vulnerability to their publication long ago, psyops expert Vladimir Putin certainly did long before that.

Either way, at least they won't start a nuclear war because of a twitter war.

At the moment, Russia is compiling a psychological profile of Trump to help Russian President Vladimir Putin avoid doing anything that could threaten Trump’s hold on power, while at the same time getting him to do things that benefit Russia.

Fedorov explains that the goal for Russia is to help Trump avoid looking like a Russian puppet while at the same time securing his support for key Russian policy goals.

“We should avoid any kind of step that could damage Trump,” said Fedorov. “Trump cannot come to a meeting with Putin as a loser — he must sort out his domestic problems first.”

Russia Compiles Psychological Dossier on Trump for Putin

..."Very serious preparatory work is going on in the Kremlin, including a paper — seven pages — describing a psychological portrait of Trump, especially based on this last two to three months, and the last weeks," added Fedorov, who said he has known Trump since 2000.

The U.S. president "is dancing on thin ice," he said. "It's a risky game."

A former prime minister under Putin said the Kremlin is taking no pleasure at Trump's struggles.

"Absolutely not — not laughing," Mikhail Kasyanov said. "The situation is very serious and the whole of [Putin's] team, they are nervous."

‘Insurmountable’: Morning Joe says Trump’s Russia lies may have already sunk his presidency

...“You actually look at Donald Trump saying, ‘I have not had any ties with Russia, I’ve had no business dealings with Russia,'” the MSNBC host observed. “And he just says that point blank. I think, these stories that come out, I think the political problems that follow — if there are all these front businesses — are insurmountable.”

    http://www.rawstory.com/2017/02/insurmountable-morning-joe-says-trumps-russia-lies-may-have-already-sunk-his-presidency/

Morning Joe blasts Trump’s attacks on media as the ‘enemy’: ‘That does incite people to violence’

...“When you receive tweets every day, and somebody’s threatening your life and they talk about lynching you and your family after President Trump has his way with the media, this happens over and over again, and I don’t think there’s anybody who’s in the media that doesn’t hear that every day,” Scarborough said. “So yeah, this is very, very dangerous.”

The president’s attack on “fake news” are especially ironic, Scarborough said, because Trump and his closest advisors have repeatedly lied about inauguration crowds, crime rate statistics and nonexistent terrorist attacks.

“As Jesus said, don’t throw stones if you live in glass houses,” Scarborough said. “This man lives in the biggest glass house there is when it comes to a disconnection from truth. So to attack the media and then say they’re enemies of the people is beyond the pale.”

Scarborough said Trump’s broad strategy to undermine the press appears to be backfiring for now.

MUST SEE: John Oliver Connects The Dots On Putin, Trump

You can't do a news segment anymore that isn't about Donald Trump. Or as John Oliver said last night, “Trump dominates the news cycle like a fart dominates the interior of a Volkswagen Beetle.” he said at the start of his Sunday night show.

And so what if that means real, fact-based, important international news, like the death of Kim Jong-un’s half brother, gets buried under the fake news Trump lie of Sweden's "terrorist attack?"

“Here’s where we’re at right now: Trump can dominate the news merely by referencing something that didn’t happen in Sweden,” said Oliver.

The highlight of the week was, of course, “a presidential press conference [that] elicited the same reaction you get from people who have just seen someone shoot fireworks out of his arse.” Oliver showed the universal one-word media reaction to the presser: "Wow."

But the key argument of last night's show was that Trump is either Putin's idiot stooge or willing collaborator. So many times Trump has said in public, “it would be nice if we got along with Russia.”

“It would also be nice if you could walk right up to a bear and hug it, that would be really, really nice but unfortunately it’s not that f*cking easy.”

Most jaw dropping was an interview clip with a Russian journalist, who pointed out that Putin uses problems in America to convince his own citizens that democracy fails everywhere, and it's just not possible for the world to be a better place than it is.

That is followed up with Trump's statement in his most recent O'Reilly interview: "You think America's so great?" in which Trump intimated that our government officials may have people killed, too.

It plays right into Putin's narrative and is either conscious or unconscious. Either way, it's terrifying.

She dedicated this song to me, if in my life I would ever felt lonely, sad or in trouble, she would have been my bridge over trouble water. We were seating on her bed, with a laptop and listening to this song one next to the other. At the end of that very month, I had to leave Malta, without her, and i can swear to all what i care about in life, i left my heart, soul and whats left of me there, still seating on her bed listening to this song. I am sure that i will remember her all my life, every time I listen to this song. It has a place in my heart, as she will always have. Don't end up like I did. How to describe President Trump’s first 30 days? Sad

People told me when I first panned our new president, give him a hundred days.

If the first casualty of war is truth, then the first casualties of trade war are the working man and woman. And first among them is about to be the iconic Texas rancher.

...But the Texas cattle rancher now faces a new threat: the Trump administration's blundering, blustering trade policy. By threatening a trade war with Mexico within days of inauguration, the president helped trigger a slide in cattle futures. Mexico is a major export market. By sinking the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the new administration cut off long-sought access to the Japanese market. Now banks have raised the conditions for collateral for loans for ranchers.
Texas ranchers, though, will not be alone for long. Beef producers from Nebraska to the Dakotas face the same problems. So do grain farmers in Kansas and the snow-covered corn fields of Iowa, just like tomato farmers in California and Florida and autoworkers in Michigan, longshoremen, truckers and railway workers in Miami and Houston and Long Beach. These will be the first casualties of a trade war.

Traudl Junge, the final secretary for Adolf Hitler, tells of the Nazi dictator's final days in his Berlin bunker at the end of WWII.

      Downfall (2004)
      Der Untergang (original title)

      Storyline

In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with the Soviet Armies closing in from the west and south. In Berlin, capital of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany will still achieve victory and orders his Generals and advisers to fight to the last man. "Downfall" explores these final days of the Reich, where senior German leaders (such as Himmler and Goring) began defecting from their beloved Fuhrer, in an effort to save their own lives, while still others (Joseph Goebbels) pledge to die with Hitler. Hitler, himself, degenerates into a paranoid shell of a man, full of optimism one moment and suicidal depression the next. When the end finally does comes, and Hitler lies dead by his own hand, what is left of his military must find a way to end the killing that is the Battle of Berlin, and lay down their arms in surrender.

Republicans slowly waking to realization that tables have turned on Obamacare's popularity

It's the first long "district work period"—recess in less euphemistic terms—for Congress, the first chance they have to come back home and face constituents after a month of this new, disastrous Trump administration. In a reflection of just how bad things are going, more than 200 Republicans are hiding out this week, refusing to meet with their voters, and it's largely because of Obamacare. Because even if they're unwilling to look voters in the face when they tell them they want to take their health care away they're feeling the heat.

The public should show up at their homes. Hiding out, really, what cowards.

They are the only ones that believe Obamacare is a disaster and even when their "employers" tell them to leave it alone, they insist on repealing it.

You'll notice that the GOP is flummoxed. For years, they've been saying that they would get rid of it on 'day one.' Then, Trump said he would replace it with 'something beautiful.'

Yet, here we are. They can't figure out what to do. Know why?

Because unless you want to either a) establish a government run single payer system (like Medicare for All) or b) destroy the private insurance business... you will end up with Obamacare.

Quote of the Day: Donald Trump Saves the Coal Mines
    Via the Washington Post:

“If he hadn’t gotten into office, 70,000 miners would have been put out of work,” Patricia Nana, a 42-year-old naturalized citizen from Cameroon. “I saw the ceremony where he signed that bill, giving them their jobs back, and he had miners with their hard hats and everything — you could see how happy they were.”

And those immigration raids last weeks ended up deporting 1.3 million undocumented workers. And Intel's new factory will give good, high-paying jobs to 250,000 hardworking Americans. And Trump's Muslim ban prevented 400 acts of terror on American soil.

Sigh. Among his supporters, Trump's style of governance by TV spectacle is working out well.

    1. Trump's governing style is like something out of The Onion.

      Or an SNL skit.

Whenever I see Jeff Daniels' name or see his face or hear his voice on television, I think of "The Newsroom," which was perhaps the best series ever on American television. I would love to see how the newsroom team would deal with Trump and his authoritarian sycophants in the White House today.

Of course, the other face and voice that we all miss is Jon Stewart. I will never forget how he came out on stage after Cheney shot his buddy while at a rich guy's hunting ranch. We need both of them now.

    1. Best series after The West Wing maybe.

      Both Aaron Sorkin.

The American President wasn't too shabby either.

I'll bet Sorkin is really depressed right now.

I really wish Stewart had not retired when he did. We really needed him during the election. We'll never know if having him and David Letterman still on late nights might have turned the tide. Letterman at least. I give him credit for single handedly destroying McCain in 2008.

I've been saying that America isn't the greatest country in the world since I was in college. I've had people agree with me, and I've had people curse at me. I studied abroad in college, and then travelled far and wide for the next two years, and found there is a great world and great countries out there beyond the US. I have a favorite country - I will keep it to myself because it's just my opinion. But it isn't the US, though I do love and respect so much about this country. We do have a lot of issues, and the first step tp resolving them is admitting that they exist.

"so that someday we can once again brag that we are 'The greatest country on earth'"

That's NOT the goal. Didn't you hear Jeff Daniels saying that we didn't use to beat our chests?

Anyway, saying ANY country is the greatest country on earth is like saying the orange is the greatest fruit on earth. The apples, kiwis, bananas etc think it sounds stupid and vain.

I can tell you for sure that Canadians shake their heads when they hear insecure Americans bragging about being the "best" when the U.S. is the only Western country in the world where people go bankrupt over medical bills.

Not to mention all the other parameters that Daniels mentioned.

  28. Yes, we must recognize the flaws and strive to overcome them.

But we must also acknowledge when there is no problem and it doesn't need fixing.

Trump bloviates about how awful America is, now dangerous some cities and neighborhoods are. He makes up shit about who is responsible for violence and who we should fear. It's all LIES. We need to recognize that America may not be perfect and it could stand some improvement but it is not the shithole dissater that the Shitgibbon makes it out to be.

We need information, education and courage. Courage to stand up to the Deplorables and shout them down.

America may not be the greatest country in the world but it also doesn't have to be make "great again". Not Trump's version of "great". And not again because it was never not great. It can simply be made greatER. And that won't happen by making it worse with bans, deportations, deregulations, lies, dumbing down and privatization.

What the Republicans are doing in Congress is not making American greatER. It is making it worse. They are looking to destroy the America that is great.

They are well on the way to creating a fourth reich, where it is the Fascist States of AmeriKKKa that will be their version of "great". Great for corporations and rich white men.

    The Handmaid's Tale is coming.
