The Pope proclaims that priests should be prepared to call in the exorcists if the situation warrants it.

Courtesy of The Guardian:

Pope Francis has advised priests who hear troubled confessions from parishioners to not hesitate to call on the services of an exorcist.

A good confessor has to be very discerning, particularly when he has to deal with “real spiritual disorders”, the 80-year-old pontiff told priests at a Vatican training seminar on the art of hearing believers recount their sins.

Disorders could have their roots in all manner of circumstances, including supernatural ones, he suggested.

In such circumstances the confessor “must not hesitate to refer to exorcists … chosen with great care and prudence”.

First off there is NO situation that would warrant having some blabbering fool standing over a troubled person while reading Bible verses and douching them with holy water.

All of that should be left behind in the 18th century where it belongs.

Secondly mental illness is not something that a priest is capable of diagnosing without the assistance of a trained psychiatrist.

Trust me, no good psychiatrist is going to write our a prescription for exorcism.

Thirdly I actually once had a client who had suffered through an exorcism, and I can tell you from first hand experience that the trauma created by such an experience can be quite debilitating.

What statements like this tell me is that as progressive as this new Pope seems to be sometimes, he is still stuck in a primitive mindset that makes him erratic and dangerous.

Plus he wears a long white dress and fancy handmade red shoes and is against transgendered people and/or cross dressers.

One of the biggest problems in the world is the belief in nonsense. When one gets up in the morning believing in superstitious nonsense, then where do you draw the line?
If you can pray away the gay then why should you believe in global warming?
If homosexuality causes hurricanes then why should we believe in evolution?
If my psychic tells me Hillary's bad bad bad then I HAVE to vote for Trump - right?
    "Faith" is belief without evidence
...which could also be used to define "delusion".

Religion was present in primitive cultures. Temples 11,000 years old have been excaved. In rare cases, exorcism of a believer could be more beneficial than an antipsychotic drug and provide psychological resolution. No different than quack medical therapies used today, which some people swear by. Authentic christianity as a philosophy is quite good. As a religion, too easily distorted and perverted.

My neighbor's pagan. He recently got evicted from his home. He now has people making voodoo dolls of the guy that evicted him. Like Barney of Mayberry would say, "He's a Nut".

2:39am, 7:13AM, goes to show ya that ANY religion is a tool of the congenital idiot.

      "Authentic christianity as a philosophy"?
Which flavor of xtianity is that? Catholic? Baptist? Methodist, Lutheran, Mormon, FLDS, Church Of Christ, Jehovah's Witness, Dominionism, 7 Mountains, Zionism, Zoroastrian Dualism, Snake-handlers,Church of God, the Assembly of God, the Gideonites, Anglican Church, and any of the hundreds of 'off-brand' jesus party houses?
If they all believe in the same Skygod & Son, then why all the different divisions? Why not ONE CHURCH?

Maybe an exorcism would help Trump. I'm sure his family have tried everything else.

I look at popes and priests and pastors and rabbis and imams, etc. and think: what a waste of brains. Any religious devotion/submission is intellectual suicide.

A dose of good old fashion commonsense would help but there are some such as the new evil liar in charge and his evil family could use an exorcism along with the lousy actors and defective cabinet. 7 hills cult and scientologist are most needed of an exorcism today. Its a great day for a exorcism and resignation.

"while reading Bible verses and douching them with holy water"

Ummm...did you mean 'dousing' them??? I've never witnessed an exorcism, but I don't believe 'douching' is a part of the ritual!

Religion is just a way to control terrified and ignorant peasants; that's why they don't want to educate people. Once the curtain is ripped open, they walk away and the priesthood loses power.

    Nobody likes to lose power.

Those in congress and the WH who believe in torturing the poor could do with an exorcism.

Call in in the exorcists for "real spiritual disorders"?

Like when the parishioners catch the priest butt**cking boys in the confessional?

Exorcism is exceedingly rare in the RC church, and a thorough medical and psych examination is always done first. Gryphen doesn't know that as he just shoots from the hip at the Pope. In fact one of the diocesan priests I know is a psychiatrist in a mental hospital.

I don't think much of possession or truly demonic evil, except when I've seen programmes on criminals like Charles Manson or Andrei Chikatilo. When I see Chikatilo's eyes I believe something inhuman is there.

Anglican church uses the term deliverance ministers, not exorcist, thinking it less off-putting. It's quite rare in that church too.

yeah, exorcism in the RC church IS rare, much much less than their unreported, covered up child rapes. How do you feel about Ratzinger, you child rapist apologist? He was your Pope, too!
Exorcism makes about as much sense as trepanning, another science-less treatment for mental illness. Trepanning might be less damaging to society as a whole, than your stupid superstitious beliefs.
