Democrats now have the votes needed to filibuster Trump's pick for the Supreme Court.

Courtesy of CNN:

Four Senate Democrats announced Monday they plan to oppose Neil Gorsuch, bringing the Democratic caucus to the 41 votes needed to sustain a filibuster against the Supreme Court nominee.

The announcement sets Republicans up to change Senate rules -- referred to as the "nuclear option" -- to lowering the threshold of advancing Supreme Court nominees to just 51 votes from 60.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-9 along party lines to advance Gorsuch's nomination to the full Senate. With Sens. Chris Coons of Delaware, Dianne Feinstein of California, Mark Warner of Virginia and Patrick Leahy of Vermont all saying Monday they could not support Gorsuch,

Democrats reached the 41 votes they needed to prevent the advancement of Gorsuch's nomination under current chamber rules.

I keep hearing that the Democrats are shooting their wad too early and that they should wait for the NEXT Supreme Court nomination which may change its ideological makeup.

I call bullshit on that idea, as I do not think that ANY of Trump's nominees or policies should be allowed to go forward until this investigation into his possible collusion with Russia during the election has been completed.

Trump's presidency is currently imploding and I think that it is in the best interests of Senate Democrats to be on the right side of history when it comes to an end.

Right now the progressives are fired up against Donald Trump's agenda and I would suggest that ANY Democrat who votes in support of his policies or nominees puts themselves at risk of losing their reelection bid.

After all this is rightfully Merrick Garland's position on the Supreme Court and the Democrats should drive that point home at every opportunity.

I have little doubt that in response Mitch "Yertle the Turtle" McConnell will end up using that nuclear option, but that will only bite him in the ass down the road.

626 pm - where on my liberal membership card does it say I have to be a pacifist? I may support diplomatic measures when dealing with confrontational people but I follow a creed which encourages the idea that some people just need ending - for the good of all and may it harm none.

By the way, death doesn't automatically equate to harm in my book for I've lived through enough 'worse than death' to know. Since death is a benefit denied me, at least for the here/now, I'm gathering with like minded souls. How on earth are you going to deal with an army of pissed off folk who have nothing to lose? What scare tactics can you conjure that the Dominionists haven't already rained down upon me and mine?

Old turtle head was on meet the press on Sunday and was lying as usual. He claims the American public already litigated Garland as a choice and decided that we wanted to wait until the after the election.

Excuse me but when was the trial? We the public didn’t have any say, it was the republicans that changed the rules and made up a new one. Something they have gotten good at doing because cheating is what they do best.

Let them go nuclear and if Gosuch is found to be another russian conspirator what are the rethugs going to do about it?

Also Orrin Hatch admitted the republicans got together and decided to ignore Garland and make up new rules.

Report: Former Trump Adviser Met With And Passed Docs To Russian Spy In 2013

In 2013, at least three years before his association with Trump's campaign, Page met with a Russian intelligence operative named Victor Podobnyy in New York City, according to the report.

Page confirmed to BuzzFeed that he is the person identified as "Male-1" in a court filing by the U.S. government which contains a transcript of Podobnyy and a colleague, Igor Sporyshev, discussing the possible recruitment of "Male-1."

According to the filing, Page provided Podobnyy with documents "about the energy business."

Podobnyy and Sporyshev were charged in 2015 with aiding and abetting a colleague, Evgeny Buryakov, who was charged with acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The three men were also charged with conspiracy.......

The court filing includes a colorful transcript of Podobnyy speaking with Sporyshev about trying to recruit Page.

“[Male-1] wrote that he is sorry, he went to Moscow and forgot to check his inbox, but he wants to meet when he gets back. I think he is an idiot and forgot who I am...He got hooked on Gazprom thinking that if they have a project, he could rise up,” Podobnyy said. “I also promised him a lot...this is intelligence method to cheat, how else to work with foreigners? You promise a favor for a favor. You get the documents from him and tell him to go fuck himself.”

As of this afternoon, Senate Democrats have the numbers to filibuster the Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch. [Vox / Jeff Stein]

Democrats need 41 votes to deny cloture. Today, the last four “no” votes that Democrats needed came from Sens. Dianne Feinstein, Patrick Leahy, Christopher Coons, and Mark Warner. [Washington Post / Elise Viebeck, Ed O’Keefe]

That’s not the end of the story, of course. Republicans are expected to try to change the rules so that a simple majority of 51 votes can confirm Gorsuch instead of 60. With 52 Republicans in the Senate, Gorsuch could sail through at that point. [CNN / Ashley Killough, Ted Barrett]

This rules change is called the “nuclear option”; it last happened in 2013, when Democrats used it to end the filibuster on executive nominees and judicial nominees for every court but the Supreme Court. Nominations to the Court have, historically, not usually been very controversial, but rising partisanship and ideological polarization have changed that in recent decades, culminating in the Gorsuch fight. [Vox / Andrew Prokop]

Just after news broke that Democrats were poised to filibuster, Gorsuch made it out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line 11-9 vote. Now his nomination heads to the full Senate for a vote this week. [New York Times / Matt Flegenheimer]
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that the Senate will approve Gorsuch before the Senate’s April recess, which begins Saturday. That means the vote — and the increasingly likely rules change — will happen this week. [Politico / Nolan D. McCaskill]

Everybody Hates Donald Trump, Even Stupid White Men

Golly gee, how long has it been since we wrote you a story about Donald Trump breaking his own record for lowest approval rating of all time? A whole week! It was a Gallup poll, and it had Trump at a 36% approval rating, which is less popular than George W. Bush during Hurricane Katrina, and only slightly more popular than anus warts. But Donald Trump has more glass ceilings to break, except for the opposite of that! A new poll from Investor’s Business Daily/TIPP shows that Trump is beloved by just 34% of Americans, and his approval rating among WHITE DUDES, you know, the people who ruin everything in American politics, is now under 50%. WHOA, Donald Trump is winning so hard, he must be literally exhausted from all the winning by now!

Putting all the responsibilities on his son-in-law (w/no governmental experience like himself!) is bad duty and Trump should be impeached. He's incompetent - mentally off and confused. Dems should do whatever they please regarding obstructing the Republicans, their crappy legislation and their shitty Supreme nominees.

At this point the Republicans are doing nothing but unraveling all of Obama's beneficial social and environmental legislation and Trump is busy crafting one crap Executive Order after another.

Obstruct away Dems, I'd rather see a stalemate for the next 4 years; no governing vs. bad governing.

I think this Trump debacle has awoken enough people that the Republicans will be unable to throw this shit back on Dems as being their fault. The majority of voters will no longer play by their rules or believe their spin, we've seen it too many times now.

Usually the portraits of a president and first lady are hung after they've left office, complete with a little ceremony. Wonder if there will be that kind of ceremony for the Obamas. . . . Also I wonder if Trump and his third wife will preside over the annual Easter Egg Roll or if they'll be a kitchen garden this year with local schoolchildren participating or if there will be a White House science fair or an astronomy night. There were so many wonderful events while the Obamas lived there. I wouldn't want to wish for another Girl Scouts campout on the lawn, not with Trump in residence.
