It's Earth Day, do you know where your scientists are marching today?

Courtesy of USA Today:

Thousands of people — scientists and their champions — are expected to descend on Washington Saturday and turn out in hundreds of cities worldwide to use Earth Day as a vehicle to show public support for what they feel is a trend against using scientific evidence for govrnment policymaking.

While billing itself as nonpartisan, the March for Science movement, including rallies and marches in more than 600 communities, clearly sees the Trump administration, which has expressed skepticism of man's role in climate change and has eased regulations on coal and oil production, as a threat to science.

Of particular concern to critics is the Trump administration's budget that calls for sizable cuts in funding for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Organizers of the march encouraged scientists in their ranks to wear their lab coats, goggles, stethoscopes, field gear and other work clothes to make their presence known among a group that frequently shies away from public political displays.

Much like the Women's March the day after the inauguration this will be yet another demonstration of the public's concern about the danger posed by the Trump Administration, and the Republican party in general, to our civil rights and our ability to be informed.

There are literally marches all over the world, so if you want to participate take a look here to find one in your area.

If, like me, you are unable to attend due to work responsibilities or other considerations you can follow the marches on Facebook by clicking here.

Viva la Resistance!

"Melania the perfect mate. “She doesn’t make waves,” says Bytner. “She speaks only when spoken to. "
"the determined daughter of a former Communist Party member, grew up in Slovenia, where she and her older sister, Ines, learned from their parents’ ambition for upward mobility." “She was always kind of a stiff person. That’s why she wasn’t a successful model, because she couldn’t move.”

Fortunately, Melania captured the attention of Donald Trump at a party, thrown by Zampolli, at the Times Square nightclub the Kit Kat Club, during Fashion Week in September 1998. Trump had come with a date, Norwegian cosmetics heiress Celina Midelfart, but when she went off to use the bathroom, Trump approached Melania and asked for her number. She took his number instead" ‘Oh, it’s the small hands you like, not the money, right? The comb-over, the dashing good looks.’ Melania would say, ‘Stop it, stop it.’ Her rap was ‘He’s a real man.’ ”
"In 1999, shortly after they began dating, she participated in an on-air phone call with Trump and Howard Stern, as they discussed her chest, and whether she stole money from Donald’s wallet. When Stern asked to talk to “that broad in your bed,” Trump put her on the line, and she spoke about how they had sex more than daily, and revealed that she was nearly nude. Stern replied, “I have my pants off already.” Thanks to her relationship with Trump, she finally got her glossy-magazine spread—nearly naked in British GQ, handcuffed to a briefcase on a private jet, which Trump supplied."The people in Trump’s orbit have all memorized the same stories. And they repeat them word for word.” late into Melania’s pregnancy, recalls him remarking that he agreed to the baby on the condition that Melania would get her body back. “She promised him that everything would go back to the way it was,” says this guest; it struck this person as a “contract.”This trio—Cohen, Wolkoff, and Jeff Zucker—would all go on to play roles in the Trumps’ next chapter: presidential politics. Zucker led the way in giving Trump hours of unfiltered airtime during the campaign (but has since steered CNN to solid opposition ground). Wolkoff would be the First Lady’s first hire, as a senior adviser. Cohen became a rabid Trump surrogate."Melania told this aide that she didn’t want Donald to run, because she was terrified he might WIN. " Her immigration attorney Michael Wildes, who worked for Trump Models and the Miss Universe pageant, denies that Melania’s stance toward fellow immigrants is unsympathetic, likening her to “the biblical QUEEN ESTHER” on this issue."it was the height of spoiled self-centeredness. Of a very privileged, wealthy woman looking only at herself, who clearly has no thoughts or care for the people her husband has damaged, ruined, and traumatized by his cyberbullying.”here was a chance—a GOLDEN opportunity for Melania to do something transformative for the WORLD, or at least to serve as the compassionate partner, a kinder counterweight to a man whose lifeblood was to insult."

I don't think there is anything the least bit "biblical" about the third wife. I don't know why she's hiding out. She could have taken ESL courses over the years in New York. I'm sure the city is teeming with them. Either she doesn't like to be near people or her husband will not allow her to be. Either way, it's absolutely pathetic. And it shouldn't be costing us so much money to keep her in her imposed or self-imposed "purdah."

Report Concludes that Trump’s Climate Denial Aids Terrorist Recruitment Efforts

    It is no massive revelation to anyone with a brain, but a new report commissioned by the German government said radical terror groups are profiting from the effects climate change Trump says is a hoax. The report reiterates what the Pentagon and Department of Defense began saying 10 years ago;

“Climate change-fueled natural disasters and resource shortages will strengthen recruiting efforts of terror groups like ISIS and Boko Haram. As the climate is changing, so too are the conditions within which non-state armed groups such as Boko Haram and ISIS operate. Climate change contributes to creating a fragile environment in which these groups can thrive.”

That was the conclusion of the smart people at the German think tank, Adelphi, a conclusion laid out nicely in its executive summary (full report here: pdf).

The Adelphi report revealed that “large-scale environmental and climatic change contributes to creating an environment in which non-state armed groups can thrive and opens spaces that facilitate the pursuit of their strategies.”

For example, ISIS closed a dam to make it easier to attack their enemies or blew up dams to force residents to flee their homes leaving flooded areas “more susceptible” to territorial control. What is more troubling is that as climate-fueled food and water resource scarcity increases, terror groups will gain power by controlling what few resources remain.

As the report noted, in agreement with the Pentagon and Defense Department analysis, “diminishing natural resources are creating a desperate environment that terror groups depend on for recruiting new members.”

For example, Lake Chad in Africa “provides economic livelihood” for about 80 percent of the region’s population, but as the lake shrinks due to climate change, the population becomes more susceptible to recruitment efforts by Boko Haram.

    The report noted that:

I really liked that part of Bill Maher's program last night. I am so tired of people talking about simply moving to another planet when they're finished trashing this one. it won't be so simple, especially now because our country's leaders (the GOP, that is) have decided that science is expendable. And, for those of a religious bent, God gave humans the earth to protect and nurture, not trash and abandon. I suspect God would not be pleased with those humans who would simply move on to another planet.

Hundreds of Cities Rally to Support March for Science

Tens of thousands of people are expected in Washington, DC alone.

The marches, which coincide with the annual Earth Day celebration, have sparked debate within the scientific community over whether scientists should be actively engaged in political actions. Organizers for the march say the event is nonpartisan—there is no mention of Trump on its website—but assert silence is no longer an option amid the threats posed by Trump and many of his advisers.

Mother Jones has three reporters on the scene, Pema Levy in DC, Jaelynn Grisso in New York, and Karen Hao in Los Angeles. For up-to-the-minute news on the marches, be sure to follow them, along with our rolling collection of updates below:

Science Denier Trump Reeling As Thousands Gather On Six Continents To March For Science

The march is unfolding all over the globe, with activists in at least 500 cities participating.

Donald Trump may think climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese, but thousands of people all over the world know better – and they’re taking to the streets on Saturday to participate in the March for Science.

As The Washington Post noted, the event is unfolding all over the globe, with activists on six different continents participating and scientists on the seventh continent – Antarctica – cheering on the global event.

According to The Independent, over 500 cities will see science marches.

In the United States, the largest pro-science demonstration will unfold right in Trump’s backyard, in Washington D.C., where tens of thousands of protesters and scientists are expected to show up in support fighting man-made climate change.

“The oceans are rising, and so are we,” read one of the activists’ signs, according to The Washington Post.

Here’s a shot of the gathering in Washington, D.C. via MSNBC:

Bill Nye Brilliantly Quotes The Constitution To Prove That Trump Must Act On Climate Change

"It's in the U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, to promote the progress of science and useful arts."

As thousands of activists and scientists around the world gather to March for Science, Bill Nye has a U.S. Constitution lesson for Donald Trump that proves he must advance scientific causes.

In an interview on MSNBC’s AM Joy, Nye said that it explicitly states in the Constitution that the U.S. government must “promote the progress of science and useful arts,” something the Trump administration isn’t even close to upholding.

The one thing that might prevent the United States from becoming totally unrecognizable by 2020: Meet the ex-presidents

...Since January 20, the nation’s most fundamental values have been distorted, as the man who spoke of “carnage” at his inauguration presides over a divided and fractious nation. This carnage—a blow to our comity and polity, to our sense of union and of purpose—Trump has personally unleashed. If this is what is in store for us over the next four years, the United States may be unrecognizable by 2020.
Confronted by such conditions, it is incumbent upon the five living former presidents—Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama—to disregard tradition and form a Presidential Committee of Conscience that would have one purpose: to admonish and correct a sitting president whose actions are a threat to the defining ethos of the nation; whose policies contribute to the shredding of the fabric that bind us together as a people and fracture alliances that have been the foundation of a reasonably calm and sensible global order; whose cavalier utterances betray the dignity and purpose of the office of the presidency.

Neil deGrasse Tyson slaps down ‘science-deniers’ like Mike Pence as ‘threats to democracy’

In a 4-minute video for “Science in Democracy,” astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson laid out the case against science-deniers who refuse to accept scientific consensus — while taking a shot at Vice President Mike Pence who once argued on the House floor against the teaching of evolution as a fact.

“People have lost the ability to judge what is true and what is not, what is reliable, what is not reliable,” deGrass Tyson explained. “That’s not the country I remember growing up in. I don’t remember any other time where people were standing in denial of what science was.”

Sharing the clip of Pence as well as clips of anti-vaxxers attempting to make their case, the popular lecturer explained how the scientific method works, cautioning, “Science is not something to toy with.”

“You can’t say, ‘I chose not to believe in E=mc2,’” deGrasse Tyson continued, using Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity as an example. “You don’t have that option. It is true, whether or not you believe in it.”

“The sooner you understand that, the faster we can get on with the political conversations about how to solve the problems that face us,” he warned. “Recognize what science is, and allow to be what it can and should be: In the service of civilization.”

Ahead of a massive March for Science in Washington, the popular TV educator attacked the Trump administration’s dismissal of ‘objective truths’

Governor of Louisiana Declares State of Emergency as State’s Coastline Disappears

...More than half of the population of Louisiana lives on the coast, and the land is critical to the energy and maritime industries as well as trade. The pace of erosion is quickening, with the governor writing, “More than 1,800 square miles of land between 1932 and 2010, including 300 square miles of marshland between 2004 and 2008 alone.” He continues to write in the declaration that if no action is taken right now, within 50 years, “2,250 square miles of coastal Louisiana is expected to be lost.”

Instead, at least through one of his tweets, he was hoping to divert attention away from that issue by cashing in on the anti-immigrant sentiment that got him elected in the first place.

It’s not clear if Trump will make any comment about the marches later in the day, but chances are if he does, it will only be to attack the participants and accuse them of being paid political operatives.

Global heating is matter of life and death in all sorts of ways. It is the moral crisis of our age. Reversing it requires science more than ever!

The positive effects of science on our lives are everywhere. And the needs for more and more responsible science are also everywhere.
