Nearly 200 theaters will be showing the movie "1984" today. Can you guess why?

Courtesy of The Hill:

Nearly 200 movie theaters worldwide reportedly plan to screen the film version of “1984” simultaneously Tuesday in protest against President Trump.

The demonstration, called "National Screening Day," primarily involves cinemas in the U.S. but also includes venues in Canada, Croatia, Sweden and the United Kingdom, according to Monday reports.

Al-Jazeera said the event was created by Dylan Skolnick, co-director of the Cinema Arts Centre on Long Island, N.Y., and Adam Birnbaum, director of film programing at Connecticut’s Avon Theatre Film Centre.

“In particular, this undermining of the concept of facts and the demonization of foreign enemies [by the Trump administration] really resonate in ‘1984,’” Skolnick said.

The event is scheduled for April 4 as a nod to the date Winston Smith, the protagonist of George Orwell's novel, begins resisting the Inner Party and Big Brother.

“No one is suggesting that we’re living in Orwell’s world. But the road to that world is people just becoming disengaged and allowing their government to do whatever it wants," Skolnick said.

“1984” depicts a totalitarian future society controlled by a single political party amid perpetual war and endless government surveillance.

Okay wait, so we're NOT living in Orwell's world yet?

Somebody needs to tell that to my blood pressure.

Our local theatre is showing it tonight. I hope that lots of millennials see it. Apparently when polled recently, only 30% of the young adults polled thought that a democracy was the best form of government.

I hope folks will stay thru the end credits and not get up and leave immediately as the movie ends.
      *Because*
Annie Lennox sings this song, acapella, "Julia"(not the J. Lennon beauty, another one) and it it hauntingly gorgeous. It really sets the tone for the end of the "1984" story.
      Brilliant movie! Even better book.

We have been living in a fully Orwellian world since before November. Lies r truth and truth is a lie. Sounds a lot like the old USSR to me.

Hopefully the theaters will be jammed and people will finally wake up to what has been done to our democracy.

“You wanna at least make a phone call or two,” he conceded. “[But] at a certain point, when that sucker comes by you, you gotta shoot. You gotta shoot. I mean, you gotta shoot.”
"One of the most frightening near-misses came in 1983, when the aging Soviet leadership in the Kremlin was convinced that an attack by the U.S. was imminent. They had been badly rattled by President Ronald Reagan’s declaration that the Soviet superpower was an “evil empire” destined for “the ash-heap of history,” and by his talk of developing a so-called Star Wars defense system capable of zapping any target from space. And so when Soviet spies began reporting on a large-scale US-NATO military exercise, code-named Able Archer, the Kremlin concluded that they were witnessing preparations for a massive conventional and nuclear offensive."
"inside the Kremlin, senior leaders considered a preemptive nuclear strike to avoid defeat, according to a top-secret U.S." On December 22, Putin promised to strengthen Russia’s strategic nuclear forces in his traditional year-end speech to his officer corps. Hours later, Trump vowed, via Twitter, to “greatly strengthen and expand” the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal. On Morning Joe the following day, host Mika Brzezinski said that Trump had told her on a phone call, “Let it be an arms race. We will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all.”. “The speed of war has changed, and the nature of these changes makes the global security environment even more unpredictable, dangerous, and unforgiving.”

Trump Says U.S. Willing to Take Unilateral Action on North Korea

Pyongyang set to top agenda for president’s coming meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping

WASHINGTON—President Donald Drumpf emphasized that the U.S. is willing to take unilateral action against North Korea if China doesn’t move to contain the burgeoning nuclear power, as he put trade and the military threat from Pyongyang at the top of the agenda of his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week.

In his comments, Mr. Drumpf looked to tie U.S. imports of Chinese goods with China’s cooperation on North Korea. The Drumpf administration, which has made narrowing the trade deficit a priority, has called China a nonmarket economy with unfair trade practices, and recently signaled it is willing to keep Chinese goods eligible for higher U.S. tariffs well into the future.

“China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won’t,” Mr. Drumpf said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Sunday. “And if they do that will be very good for China, and if they don’t it won’t be good for anyone.” He added: “I think trade is the incentive. It is all about trade.”

Asked if some sort of grand bargain with China could result from the meeting, he said: “Well, if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will. That is all I am telling you.”

China, which is North Korea’s main economic and political benefactor, has a complicated relationship with the insular nation, which has acted as a buffer between communist China and American-backed South Korea. China has emphasized talks with North Korea, while also signing on to United Nations sanctions. This year, China proposed that North Korea suspend its nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a halt in U.S.-South Korean military exercises. The U.S. rejected the idea.

The U.S. has launched a review of its strategy on North Korea, which comes as recent events have ratcheted up tension in the region. Mr. Drumpf has seen China as an important part of the calculus in curbing the North Korean threat, but has also indicated the U.S. would be willing on its own, with or without Beijing’s help.

“North Korea is behaving very badly,” Mr. Drumpf tweeted in March. “They have been ‘playing’ the United States for years. China has done little to help!”

Mr. Drumpf’s secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, took a hard line in a visit to South Korea in March, warning of a possible pre-emptive military strike against North Korea. Stepping up pressure on Beijing, Mr. Tillerson also criticized the Chinese for objecting to a defense system in South Korea meant to protect the country from a missile attack from North Korea.

Mr. Drumpf often spoke on the campaign trail about China’s alleged currency manipulation and unfair trade deals. Since his election, Mr. Drumpf has talked about taking more aggressive trade and military stances with regards to China, but hasn’t taken action on that front. In one example, Mr. Drumpf’s Treasury Department hasn’t labeled China a currency manipulator, despite his pledge to do so on “day one.”

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., said North Korea would be the key topic at the scheduled meeting between Messrs. Drumpf and Xi this week. She said China is the only country that can effectively halt North Korea’s missile-development program.

“You’re going to see President Drumpf meet with President Xi and a lot of conversation and the most important conversation will be how we’re going to be dealing with the nonproliferation of North Korea,” she said on ABC’s “This Week.”

No one can even find a photograph of Donald Trump’s favorite NSC deputy Ezra Cohen-Watnick

Is it possible in this day and age to go through ones entire life without being photographed? Better question: what kind of life have you been living if you’ve spent the entire time making sure you’ve never been photographed? That’s a question it’s now fair to ask of Ezra Cohen-Watnick, who despite holding a key job in the National Security Council, and despite figuring prominently in the Devin Nunes scandal, appears to have never been photographed.

I’m not the only one who has found this odd. My readers have been asking the question, because they’re not seeing any photos of the guy attached to my articles about him or anyone else’s articles about him. My research team can’t even find a single photograph of him, which tells me something, because my research team is really good. There’s so little information available about Ezra Cohen-Watnick that the editors at Wikipedia had to rely on his voter registration information (link) just to determine his current age. Apart from his name having been mentioned by a reporter in a transcript of a Sean Spicer press briefing (link), he appears nowhere on the White House website.

In fact most of the news articles published about Cohen-Watnick over the past week have had photos of someone else attached, a different Trump associate, someone else vaguely related to the story, any photo at all, just so the news outlet can have a photo on its article.
