Dammit! Comey said I wasn't being investigated! |
The special counsel overseeing the investigation into Russia’s role in the 2016 election is interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of a widening probe that now includes an examination of whether President Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.
The move by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III to investigate Trump’s conduct marks a major turning point in the nearly year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials said.
Trump had received private assurances from then-FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation. Officials say that changed shortly after Comey’s firing.
Five people briefed on the interview requests, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said that Daniel Coats, the current director of national intelligence, Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, and Rogers’s recently departed deputy, Richard Ledgett, agreed to be interviewed by Mueller’s investigators as early as this week. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy, and it is unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI.
According to the article this investigation actually started right after Trump fired James Comey, which was even BEFORE they appointed Robert Mueller to be the Special Counsel.
This also means that while Comey was testifying in that Senate hearing regarding his assurances to Trump that he was not under investigation he must have been using every bit of his self control not to break into a huge smile knowing that was no longer the case.
The article also reasserts this from earlier reporting:
Officials said one of the exchanges of potential interest to Mueller took place on March 22, less than a week after Coats was confirmed by the Senate to serve as the nation’s top intelligence official.
Coats was attending a briefing at the White House with officials from several other government agencies. When the briefing ended, as The Washington Post previously reported, Trump asked everyone to leave the room except for Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Coats told associates that Trump had asked him whether Coats could intervene with Comey to get the bureau to back off its focus on former national security adviser Michael Flynn in its Russia probe, according to officials. Coats later told lawmakers that he never felt pressured to intervene.
A day or two after the March 22 meeting, Trump telephoned Coats and Rogers to separately ask them to issue public statements denying the existence of any evidence of coordination between his campaign and the Russian government.
Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the president’s requests, officials said.
That is obstruction of justice, plain and simple.
Well so much for the GOP talking points that the president himself is not under criminal investigation, because oh yes he is!
And Trump is seriously pissed off about it:
They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 15, 2017
No no, I saw the greatest witch hunt in American political history during those Benghazi hearings. You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people! #MAGA— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 15, 2017
But nice try.
What do you want to bet that now Trump will try to find a way to fire Robert Mueller insuring that this investigation gets turned up to eleven?
So now the president chosen for us by a foreign government is being investigated for attempting to obstruct an investigation into that fact, because he fired the guy leading that initial investigation, while his party scrambles to survive the scandal of his presidency.
Even the current season of House of Cards did not have quite this much political intrigue and drama.

CEOs to Trump: You're failing
ReplyDeletePresident Trump loved to brag during the campaign about his business skills. Now that he's in charge, business leaders seem alarmed by Trump's political skills.
A stunning 50% of the CEOs, business execs, government officials and academics surveyed at the annual Yale CEO Summit give Trump an "F" for his first 130 days in office.
The survey, released earlier this week, found that another 21% give Trump's performance a "D" so far. Just 1% of the 125 leaders polled awarded the billionaire an "A."....

It is right and just to investigate Trump for obstruction of justice. Trump was delighted about the interference by Russia and leaked emails obtained by hacking. Trump loved that because it was to his advantage. Leaks that do not support his lies anger him. There is already sufficient evidence Trump did not want the investigation of Flynn to continue.

The WaPo Obstruction Blockbuster and the World of Hurt To Come
ReplyDeleteAfter marveling at the lede of this new Washington Post bombshell – Mueller investigating Trump for obstruction of justice – I went back and read the whole piece again. You would think that news would be enough for a single piece. But when you read it all the way through the picture it paints is actually considerably more dire.
One key point is that Mueller did not start this obstruction investigation. According to the Post, that probe began “days after Comey was fired on May 9…” Mueller was appointed on May 17th. Reading the Post piece closely, I do not think it explicitly says that the probe began prior to the 17th. But the wording and logic of the piece strongly suggests that is the case.
One key point I draw from this is that it was clear to people at the DOJ and FBI almost from the beginning that this was a potential case of obstruction of justice. That makes me consider who then was in place to make such a decision. Once James Comey was fired, the acting Director of the FBI was Andrew McCabe, who remains in that role. If my surmise about the chronology is correct, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein remained in charge of the Russia probe. Thus I think he would have been acting in Attorney General Sessions’ stead to make the decision to authorize such a probe.

97 U.S. senators dare Trump to veto sanctions against Russia
ReplyDeleteWhile Donald Trump seems determined to make America best friends with Russia — handing over top secret intelligence and trying to lift sanctions against the country — a nearly united Senate is standing in his way.
On Wednesday, the Senate voted overwhelmingly, 97-2, to impose sanctions on Russia for interfering in the 2016 presidential election. Republicans Mike Lee of Utah and Rand Paul of Kentucky were the only “no” votes.
Trump could veto the bill, but with that kind of bipartisan support, he would be unlikely to get his way.
The sanctions amendment, attached to a larger bill about sanctions on Iran, is a direct rebuke of the recent report that the Trump administration is seeking to lift sanctions that were imposed in December in direct response to Russia’s attempt to influence the 2016 election.
The vote also comes one day after a report that Russia orchestrated cyber attacks on voting systems in 39 states in an apparent attempt to alter or delete voter information.

With the White House and both chambers of Congress all under Republican control, the latest Gallup polling results show Americans — including Republicans — are growing more concerned about the direction the country is heading.
ReplyDeleteA precipitous 17 percent drop in Republican satisfaction in just one month contributed to overall satisfaction reaching its lowest point since before the 2016 election.
Only 41 percent of Republicans are happy with the how things are going. These figures are astonishing given the fact the Republican Party has full control of both the legislative and executive branches of government.
And, while Republicans are more dissatisfied than ever since Trump took office, Democrats are even more concerned. A full 90 percent of Democrats are dissatisfied about the direction the United States is taking. Combining results from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, more than 75 percent of Americans are worried about the path forward under GOP leadership.
