For his birthday this year Barack Obama got his own holiday.

Courtesy of NBC Chicago:

Former President Barack Obama got a special treat for his birthday this year - his very own holiday.

Governor Bruce Rauner signed into law Friday a measure to designate Aug. 4 as "Barack Obama Day" across Illinois.

The newest state holiday will be celebrated each year on the 44th president's birthday, beginning in 2018.

The holiday will be "observed throughout the State as a day set apart to honor the 44th President of the United States of America who began his career serving the People of Illinois in both the Illinois State Senate and the United States Senate, and dedicated his life to protecting the rights of Americans and building bridges across communities," Senate Bill 55 reads.

You mark my word folks, someday this will be a national holiday.

It may not happen within my lifetime, these things can take time, but it will definitely happen.

We were fortunate enough to have lived through one of the most consequential presidencies in our history, and that will become ever more clear with the passage of time.

In twenty years I expect to see Obama National Airport, Obama High School, and many, many Obama avenues and parkways.

Some day the whole country will celebrate the man who the Republican party tried desperately to destroy, and some how that makes it all the sweeter.

I don't believe he will have a separate holiday for his birth. That's what Presidents Day is for. But we will see many airports, streets, schools and other named in his honor and I expect Michelle Obama will have many things named for her, as well. Both Obamas are very deserving of these platitudes, unlike Donald Trump and his pornstar wife.

But remember. President's day is a combination of two Presidential birthday holidays, Lincoln's birthday on February 12, and Washington's birthday on February 22.
I would love to see Obama's birthday as a seperate holiday.

How many buildings named "TRUMP" have had these letters removed, which now only stand for Cheater, Lier, Traitor, Charlatan, Tax-evader, Adulterer, Sexual Predator, etc, etc.

I know of one tower in Vancouver -- so far.

I would too, 9:19 AM! As the first black POTUS and the fact he did such an outstanding job throughout his two terms in spite of the constant obstruction of the Republicans!

Mitch McConnell failed big time in that regard! It must have frosted his ass to see President Obama reelected for his second term. Loved it, loved it!

I so agree w/you IM! President Obama is loved, respected and cherished throughout our country and world!

He's an outstanding man, leader, community worker, husband, father and friend.

So happy I cast my vote for him both times. Remember it feeling so good to do so!

We truly could use his voice now w/the disaster we are watching under Trump and his ilk.

    My president ROCKS!

Likely to be the last truly legitimate US President in my lifetime.

I guess it ain’t over until the portly golfer sings, but it does look as if Obamacare will survive. In the end, Mitch McConnell couldn’t find the votes he needed; many thanks are due to Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John McCain (who turns out to be a better man than I thought), not to mention the solid wall of Democrats standing up for what’s right. Meanwhile, all indications are that the insurance markets are stabilizing, with insurer profitability up and only around 0.1 percent of enrollees unserved.

It’s true that the tweeter in chief retains considerable ability to sabotage care, but Republicans are basically begging him to stop, believing — correctly — that the public will blame them for any future deterioration in coverage.

Why did Obamacare survive? The shocking answer: It’s still here because it does so much good. Tens of millions have health coverage — imperfect, but far better than none at all — thanks to the Affordable Care Act. Millions more rest easier knowing that coverage will still be available if something goes wrong — if, for example, they lose their employer-sponsored plan or develop a chronic condition.

Which raises a big question: Why did the prospect of health reform produce so much popular rage in 2009 and 2010?

35-40% of the USA is comprised of Republicans

Of that number, something like 80% are Christian and conservative in varying degrees.

      That's the answer, right there.

These people (most of them) do not believe government should have any role in business, health care, social programs of any kind, or even commerce.

They view social programs as evil because for generations, the Jerry Fallwells, the Koch Brothers, and Rush LImbaugh,. and Fox news have been telling them that they have to hate government.

Add that to the racial bias and the "take back our country" small minded idiocy of a lunatic Palin, and you have a toxic mix of religion and patriotism wrapped up in xenophobia and racism.

They hate government being involved in social programs because they are ignorant, uneducated sheeple that have been force fed a poisonous meal of hate, deception, and religious lunacy for 40 years

Best President EVER! And what an intelligent, decent man he is. SO hard to believe that we now have a vulgar, deplorable lunatic in office.
P.S. We have the Barack Obama Academy of International Studies, also known as Pittsburgh Obama 6-12 serving students in the Pittsburgh (PA) area.

Now if we could just repeal all the Reagan shit. You'd think he was some kind of a great president instead of having all the pushed by Grover Norquist to hide what a crooked asshole really was.

Rauner is such a jerk. August 4 doesn't fall on a workday until 2020. You can bet he won't roll it over to a Monday for 2018 or 2019 so that we can take the day to celebrate. Jerk!

  11. Oh, please, dear god, NO! Illinois has so many bogus holidays, it's a shame.

There's no bigger Obama supporter than me, but as far as I am concerned, you can name schools, airports, roads. etc, after him, but NOT a holiday!
