Estranged husband in Texas murders his wife and seven of her friends with handgun. Update!

Spencer Hight
Courtesy of the New York Daily News:

The mother of a woman who was shot dead by her estranged husband in a mass shooting in Texas said he was upset that she was moving on after she filed for divorce.

Meredith Hight, 27, was hosting a cookout for her friends and colleagues at her home in Plano on Sunday when Spencer James Hight crashed the party and opened fire, killing a total of eight people, police said. Meredith Hight filed for divorce in July and while her husband had moved out months ago, he collected his belongings from the home just days before the shooting, her mother Debbie Lane told WFAA.

"I think he saw our comfort, ease and happiness and her embracing new life and resented it to the maximum and responded the way he did,” Lane told the local news station.

Hight was killed by the police officer who responded to the call of a shooting.

As you can probably guess Hight had been violent toward his former ex-wife, though she did not report this to the police, and he had a problem with alcohol.

The argument can be made that this man could have killed his wife with a number of weapons that would not have included a gun, but to kill eight people, five of them grown men, that requires an instrument specifically designed to take multiple lives.

Once again these weapons are advertised as tools with which to protect yourself and your family, but in the vast majority of the cases, if used at all it is to cause harm to yourself, your family, or other innocent people.

Update: Almost missed this. There was also a school shooting in Washington yesterday with one fatality.

So nothing has really changed in the abuse issue. Even with years of awareness regarding abuse and mental illness. And now that we have the face of abuse as the so called president of us written in history books, it is ugly painfully obvious that we must start at birth teaching our children manners, morals and respect to all. This disgusting example of counter political correctness has been extremely awakening of the social disease that we suffer today.

  2. An armed society is a polite society.

Wonder if the perp said excuse me before he murdered these innocent victims?

What a strange world we live in. The absolute worst of the worst can sashay down the middle of any Texas street armed to the teeth and not get a second look.

POC, on the other hand, need eyes in the back of their heads to avoid being murdered by Officer Friendly and buds. Skin color is what makes people dangerous. What else could it be?

Once upon a time in America it was like this and then we hired sheriffs and when they came to town law and order arrived.

TODAY we have citizen united, constitutional sheriffs and the white nationalist selling guns to all, arming the mentally ill, selling bunkers and military surplus and bullying America. They hired the biggest rump on the planet.

      So?
We will overturn citizen united, treat mental illness and improve our internet security system and infrastructure in this country. We will prosecute those involved in hacking world elections and into our country. Domestic or Foreign it will not matter. The swamp of liars, riggers and hackers on twitter and facebook will be drained.

7:59: unfortunately, my response to your post is: DREAM ON! The orange abomination has put in place so many racists and white nationalists all over the country, and dismantled so many of our safety institutions, it will be at least a generation before this damage can be remedied (if ever!)!

Not one of those five murdered men was a "good guy with a gun?"

Now don't call it a weapon. The NRA snowflakes don't like that word. Call it an " attitude adjustment tool" so the gun nuts are happy.

I'm waiting for the NRA to blame the victims for not being armed themselves. Because, after all, this did happen in Texas and u can open carry to your heats content. And once again with a mass shooting as in most mass shootings, the perpetrator is white. Just sayin

The NRA is partially funded by Putin for just these sort of awful results.

Men live in fear that women will laugh at them.

Women live in fear men will kill them.

She didn't report the abuse from her ex because she KNEW the cops would do nothing. Even a Restraining Order is useless when an Ex decides to become an Asshat.

Our system to protect all our citizens needs work, hard slogging through the rules and regs work. No wonder we are so screwed. Politicians want the glamor, not the work.

One reason my daughter got to be an expert in shooting once she moved to TexA$$, and eventually got a CL: She had to be able to protect herself against some lunatic ex-wife. My daughter became quite paranoid for a while there. Thankfully, she saw the light and moved away from TexA$$ and also stopped her relationship with her then-boyfriend.

  10. We'll skip the looney who is offended with guns being called "weapons."

And now for something almost equally appalling.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/congress-gun-silencers-bill_us_59b95c08e4b0edff97188620

"Congressional lawmakers will vote in the coming weeks on legislation to roll back longstanding regulations on gun silencers. Most gun owners support the current restrictions and have little interest in undoing them, according to polling. But there’s another constituency that clearly stands to benefit from the push.

Sales at gun companies have plummeted in the first eight months of Donald Trump’s presidency. The new measure would open up a revenue stream potentially worth hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

For the last 80 years, the sale of silencers, also known as suppressors, has been closely monitored under the National Firearms Act, where they are classified alongside weaponry like machine guns and sawed-off shotguns. Federal law requires any prospective buyer of a silencer to first pay a $200 transfer fee, submit to fingerprinting and pass an FBI background check, a process that can take around a year to complete.

Republican lawmakers and the gun lobby have been working over the past few years to eliminate these barriers. The Hearing Protection Act, introduced in both houses of Congress earlier this year, seeks to make the process of buying a silencer similar to that of buying a handgun. Under the measure, individuals in many states would be able to purchase a silencer from a gun store or other federally licensed dealer after passing an instant background check. Gun control advocates say the proposed law would still leave certain unlicensed sellers able to sell the devices without any background check.

The Hearing Protection Act has been wrapped into a larger legislative package called the Sportsmen Heritage And Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act, which is expected to get a House vote as early as this month. The GOP-controlled House appears likely to pass the legislation; it faces a much less certain future in the Senate.

Much of the debate over silencers has so far centered around safety. Supporters of the legislation say they’re working to protect the eardrums of hunters and recreational shooters, who routinely expose themselves to high-volume gunfire"

Because, God forbid, Spencer James Hight should damage his hearing while assassinating his wife and 7 of her friends (a few of which were his friends too.)

"But investment in the silencer business may not pay off without Congress’ help."

    THAT'S IT! The MONEY sentence.

Because it all comes down to WALL ST.
