The Black Lives Matter movement cannot be sued, a federal judge ruled Thursday, dismissing a case against the group and an activist brought by a police officer injured during protests after the July 2016 fatal shooting of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Black Lives Matter is not an entity, but a social movement, Louisiana Middle District Judge Brian A. Jackson wrote. "Therefore, all claims against 'Black Lives Matter' must be dismissed because social movements lack the capacity to be sued."
The suing Baton Rouge police officer, who remained unnamed in the lawsuit, said he was hit by concrete or rock-like objects while responding to a demonstration led by DeRay Mckesson for Black Lives Matter and had "several serious injuries," according to court documents.
Protests, vigils and memorials sprang up nationwide after the shooting of Sterling by police outside a Baton Rouge convenience store. In a graphic cellphone video that was widely shared on social media, police officers can be seen on top of the African-American man before shots were fired.
The injured officer said Mckesson and Black Lives Matter were liable for his injuries because they were negligent and should have known the protests would turn to riots and become violent.
Well that is just ignorant.
It is too bad this officer was injured, but his anger is misplaced.
That would be like if you sued the free love movement in the 60's because a hippie got your daughter pregnant.
Or if you sued Christianity because your grandmother gave her life savings to some televangelist.
I really feel that a lot of the anger and vitriol directed at BLM is the result of racism and that a lot of people really do not understand the movement.
If you are one of those visiting this link may prove helpful.
I sincerely hope this is the same ruling given on the suit by the ACLU about the DOJ warrants for the anti-Humpty Trumpty movement information gathering. That stinks of the Fascist attempting to squash free speech.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm.

Using this logic, someone needs to sue the organizer(s) of the Nazi rally in Charlottesville, VA. They should have known things would turn violent, especially because over 100 of them were carrying AR-15s, clubs and shields.
tiki torches too.
DeleteI never really understood this Black Lifes Matter slogan because the BLM slogan seemed to come about around the January 2016? take over of BLM public land in Oregon. Remember? And prior too? The Bundy's BLM stand off. The Mueller stand off with bundys, white nationalist 2yrs ago is the same twisted group. The BLM issue has to do with opening up protected public land to fracking drilling spilling and ripping it up for more profits and destruction of this earth. Black Lifes Matter yes. All lifes matter. And ALL land matters. Another distraction from the real twist and scam behind the domestic attacks coming from useful idiots of thy enemies.

"2013, the movement began with the use of the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of African-American teen Trayvon Martin."
Do you have to yoga into a pretzel to get your comments that convoluted 3:52?
DeletePart of the facebook and twitter crime is the little poot poot lies that get redistributed by bots and hacks. The professional hack Paul Honer and recently died in az at age 38, claimed to be the hack that got drumpt foundation elected to rape and destroy the usa temporally. Then we have the "Gamers" and little bots. Steve Bannon a developer of games and mastermind of cummunications and strategy was helpful to crime of the century. Yep twisted liars attempting to play games of war and takeover. Useful idiots to our enemies. Another area to look at is the paid security programs that everyday americans purchased, PCMatic, Norton etc? Where were they during the hackers feast on Americans? Hmmmmmm? I know the answer and so do you.
ReplyDeleteIt would have made more sense to sue the original officers who killed Alton Sterling because they started the chain of events that got this particular officer injured. But, having worked in law enforcement, I know that part of the problem is that cops close ranks around even their bad apples. I get it--they may need that person to back them up one day--but it makes them all less safe in the long run.
