In an Oval Office meeting earlier this month, President Trump gave his top trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, an Art of the Deal-style coaching session on how to negotiate with the South Koreans.
A number of senior officials and cabinet secretaries were present for the conversation, including Defense Secretary Mattis, Agriculture Secretary Perdue, and Secretary of State Tillerson. At issue was whether the U.S. would withdraw from the Korean trade deal — an action Trump threatened but still hasn't done.
"You've got 30 days, and if you don't get concessions then I'm pulling out," Trump told Lighthizer.
"Ok, well I'll tell the Koreans they've got 30 days," Lighthizer replied.
"No, no, no," Trump interjected.
"That's not how you negotiate. You don't tell them they've got 30 days. You tell them, 'This guy's so crazy he could pull out any minute.'"
"That's what you tell them: Any minute," Trump continued. "And by the way, I might. You guys all need to know I might. You don't tell them 30 days. If they take 30 days they'll stretch this out."
Trump does not have to bother to pretend to be crazy, because few of the things he does demonstrate sanity.
As if the South Koreans do not already have enough dealings with crazy megalomaniacs.

DeleteEven Donald Trump’s staffers are worried about how far he’s gone off the deep end
ReplyDelete....Let’s say Trump’s strategy really is to come off as “crazy” so his adversaries will fear how far he might take things, and thus capitulate to him. If this were his strategy, his own staff would never leak it, because they’d be sabotaging what he’s trying to do. So we know this isn’t true. And there’s only one reason for Trump’s staff to make up a story like this: they know he’s slipped into a dangerously untenable place. They know it’s become so obvious that the public can see it. And they’re trying to counter it by floating this narrative that it’s all an act.

Kremlin was much more serious about Trump Tower Moscow during the election than Trump’s team let on
...We already know that in January of 2016, Michael Cohen emailed the Kremlin and asked for help in getting Trump Tower Moscow built (link). All sides have since claimed that the email went unanswered, thus implying that the Kremlin wasn’t interested. But now we know that roughly six months later, the Kremlin was trying to get Cohen to come to Moscow, where he would have met with Putin. The most likely explanation for this is that once it became clear Trump was going to be the nominee, the Kremlin decided it wanted to move forward with Trump Tower Moscow after all. But it gets deeper.

Police on Monday said they retrieved 18 more weapons, along with explosives and other “devices,” from the home of the alleged gunman who killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds more in Las Vegas on Sunday night.
ReplyDeleteClark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo told reporters that police retrieved “18 additional firearms” from the suspect’s home in Mesquite, Nevada, along with “some explosives, several thousand rounds of ammo” and a number of “electronic devices” the police are evaluating.
At the latest count, Lombardo said, 59 people were dead and 527 people were injured.
According to multiple reports, the alleged shooter, Stephen Craig Paddock, a 64-year-old white man from Mesquite, Nevada, had at least 18 weapons in his hotel room in Las Vegas.

After Las Vegas massacre, Republicans back off planned vote to loosen restrictions on gun silencers
ReplyDeleteRepublicans were set to schedule a vote on two laws making it easier to purchase gun silencers and allow conceal-carry gun owners to carry their weapons from state-to-state. Politico reports they are abandoning one, if not both of those votes for the time being.
Will they try again? Of course. The NRA bought their votes and they expect a return on that investment.

Looks like a Rockum Sockum Rager
ReplyDeleteGuitarist Caleb Keeter of the Josh Abbott Band, one of the acts that played at the country music festival in Las Vegas where 58 people were killed and another 500 were injured, has had a change of heart about the Second Amendment. After being at the venue and personally witnessing the massacre, Keeter says “enough is enough.”
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it is too bad it took a tragedy like this for him to come to this realization, something he freely acknowledges. But let’s hope his counterparts in the country music industry might read these words and join him in demanding gun control, before tragedy strikes elsewhere.

ReplyDeleteDivert, Divide, Destroy
ReplyDelete...But this is Trump’s America, a conjuring of a darker American past. It’s as if Donald Trump has strolled into the political equivalent of a hospice for racist ideologies with a miracle elixir. Ideas we had hoped were near death have a new verve and vigor.
Trump is dividing this country with the delicacy of a meat cleaver.

The carnage will continue
...Assume Sunday was an average day. If the Las Vegas killings had not happened, nearly 100 people around the country would have been killed by firearms. About two-thirds of those deaths would have been suicides; nearly all the rest, homicides — about 12,000 a year. We have become emotionally and intellectually numb to this appalling toll.
A mass shooting or a terrorist rampage, on the other hand, rivets the nation. Television networks shift into continuous “breaking news” coverage. Newspapers rush to profile the shooter, then the victims. The president makes a statement expressing the nation’s grief. Gun-rights advocates pre-emptively declare that this is not the time to talk about gun control, accusing anyone who does of politicizing tragedy. Gun-control proponents ask: If not now, then when? Everyone agrees we should do something about mental health, but we end up doing nothing. A long series of funerals ends the ritual.
We go back to our routines as if there won’t be a next time. But there will. And we all know it.

DeleteTapper shames lawmakers after Vegas massacre: I wish I could say they’re doing everything they can ‘but they are not’
ReplyDeleteCNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday began his show with a somber analysis of just how frequently he’s forced to report on deadly mass shootings, telling viewers he wishes this were “the last time,” but knows it won’t be.
“This is the second time, in as many years, that you’re hearing me report to you about the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history,” Tapper said on “The Lead.” The CNN host noted he said the same thing on June 12, 2016, when a gunman opened fire at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and expressed a similar sentiment three and a half years before that, when a killer stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School and murdered 20 children and six adults.
“I wish I could tell you this is the last time I’m ever going to report to you about the deadliest mass shorting in modern American history, but I cannot tell you that,” Tapper said. “I wish I could report that lawmakers are huddling right now to try to figure out how to do everything they constitutionally can to keep these weapons of mass murder out of the hands of violently insane individuals who use them to harm innocent people, but they are not doing that.”

ReplyDeleteRachel Maddow Reveals The Chilling Reason Why The Las Vegas Killer’s Arsenal Went Unnoticed
ReplyDelete' I mean you might wonder how a civilian wouldn’t draw attention when bringing an armory’s worth of high-powered rifles into a civilian space like a hotel room at the Mandalay Bay casino. Maybe there was a big gun show in Las Vegas sometime around now, and maybe that’s why it didn’t seem strange to anybody that this guy had all those guns. It’s a reasonable question, it’s a reasonable line of inquiry from a distance until you look at real gun culture and the way it’s manifest in a place like this, where it turns out, yeah, there was a gun show last weekend. And it turns out there is another gun show coming up this weekend at a casino not very far from here at all. … There’s always a gun show. Always. Year-round. All year. Every year. It’s not like, “Holiday, it’s a gun show!” It’s like, Saturday, it’s a gun show!”
With gun shows nearly every weekend in Las Vegas, the city is a living and breathing example of America’s longstanding problem with firearm-related violence.'

‘Silence Is No Longer An Option’: Chris Murphy To Introduce New Gun Safety Legislation
Murphy said:
'This is a growing fraternity – a tragic, awful fraternity: members of Congress who represent states who have gone through these horrific mass executions. … But this silence has become unintentional endorsement. It’s become a kind of sick complicity. And I hope that in the coming days, we can come together – Republicans and Democrats – to start talking about, at the very least, some baby steps to show the people of Las Vegas, to show the people of Orlando, to show my constituents, my friends in Sandy Hook, that silence is no longer an option.'
Murphy, who has become a champion of this issue since tragedy struck Newtown in 2012, plans to introduce anti-gun violence legislation very soon.
“I’ll be introducing a new background checks bill shortly,” Murphy said on Monday, according to The Hill.

These charts show Fox News really did ignore Puerto Rico’s crisis
ReplyDelete...So what did the network cover in the small amount of time it focused on Puerto Rico?
Well, it was mostly about President Trump — and it was certainly not focused much on his inaction. Rather, it focused on what Trump was doing, like waiving the Jones Act, saying there are “tremendous strides” being made, and, of course tweeting. (Trump criticized San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz when she appeared on TV and desperately asked for more federal assistance.) There was also a brief focus on how the mainstream media is politicizing Puerto Rico.

ReplyDeleteHere's how the Las Vegas shooting compares to all of the U.S. mass shooting events since 2013, using data from the Gun Violence Archive. Why again do we allow for profit gun manufacturers and NRA to flood our streets with military weapons?
